[Q] Signal difference between AOSP and Sense? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok most of the newer ROMs let you display the signal in the status bar as a number and I've noticed that with the AOSP ROM (U.K.E. v1.4.6 for the test I did) displays a lot lower numbers (usually between -75 and -95) than the Sense ROM (MikShifted v2.1 for the test). The Sense ROM usually displays between -98 to -109, but when you go into "About Phone" in settings it and look at "Signal Strength" it always says a number in the same range as the AOSP ROM (-75 and -95). I have no knowledge of radio theory or anything of the like, could anybody explain this? Are the Sense ROM numbers just off in the status bar? Or do AOSP ROMs get better signal without the Sense overlay? I have noticed this trend in all the Sense and AOSP ROMs that have this feature, not just these two. I am just curious if somebody could explain it. Thanks in advance!

Each phone will be different... My shift, has weaker signal running aosp as compared to sense, it's very minimal difference but I really notice it when using 4G or when on wifi and moving away from my signal... I could be wrong but I think I read that aosp signal strength was off.
Sent from my PG06100

I would agree with drob311, my signal strength/data speeds seems to be a bit faster when running Sense. It's not a huge difference because I definitely prefer AOSP to Sense but when I am running a Sense ROM it has a slight edge over AOSP.. Just in my experience.
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk

Not that I run AOSP all that much. But the few times I have messed with it, my Signal hasn't been all that good. Again as drob, and crump mentioned not a huge difference. Just enough to be able to tell it's slower. But I've never done any "real" tests. Also, I'm certain there are other variables involved that I'm not accounting for.

Oh I just noticed it and thought it was interesting and thought I'd see if anybody knew why.. Thanks for the responses tho

It was more of a "Am I seeing this right experiment" than a real experiment. I don't know but when I did a speed test, flushing all caches and overclocked to the same speed, the averages where pretty much the same, just wondered if the signal strength was effected, not the performance.

The true speeds are the same (on average), and what you see with the AOSP ROM is the true strength. The sense ROMs exaggerate the signal to give customers a placebo benefit.

Yeah i agree, when i ran AOSP I had 0 bars which equaled out to 58 kbps download speeds on 3G, but Sense always showed 4 bars to full bars with same speed results

Well HERE is a good link to start with. Also THIS is another one. Both links have a bunch of other links connected. Should be a start .

The actual signal strength does not change from one ROM to the next. That would be impossible to do at the ROM level. The only thing that can change is the algorithm that takes the dBm signal strength given to it at the output of the transceiver and "translates" that into a readable quantity. So, if the ROM "samples" the signal more times per "x" cycle than another, the "signal strength" will be more averaged over a longer time period. The longer "sampling" time, the less averaged it will be. Then you have the unknown of HOW the ROM developer uses that information to write to the screen.
The hardware inside the phone. the distance it is from the transmitter and the environment in between is what determines your signal strength. The ONLY way to increase it or decrease it is to build in an RF amplifier or attenuator. That isn't something that can be done in firmware or software.
To many people get WAY to anal about what their different "Meters" on their phones are telling them without knowing WHAT those "meters" are actually doing.

Personally my data has always been worse on sense.

Well that is because of the carrier setting it to only show 3g even during 1x. Sprint feels the need to lie to its customers making them think they are in 3g coverage when they are not. Easy fix to have it actually call on the correct array of images but IMHO we shouldnt have to do that little edit to correct it.

Yeah I already knew about that, that's why I mentioned that. Like I said I get better consitant data speeds on AOSP roms then on sense where the bars are constantly going up/down. For instance I'll be browsing on the web browser and loading a webpage is very sporatic on Sense Roms.

[REQUEST] Rom with optimized battery life.

So I have seen a few roms released in the last week, but I keep thinking to myself "When will there be a rom that's targeted to optimize battery?" If one of the awesome devs could come up with something that does just this that would be amazing.
TIA.

HOW?!?! I get a max of 12 to 13 on heavy usage.
If anyone does do this, I find that I get great battery life now after trying the CDMA/GSM fix (cant find the link).
Might wanna be something to look into for future ROMs. (From what I remember, the glitch shows the phone as looking for GSM networks while it's connected to a CDMA network. I followed the instructions to correct this and it's had a positive impact on my battery life. Getting near double the life now).
You guys are on 3G aren't you? I don't even get 2 hours on 4G with medium heavy usage.

8-14 on moderate use to heavy is all you are going to be getting. I doubt you'll see a rom aimed only at battery life. Find a rom with sense removed (there are a few of them) or asop and further remove junk you don't use especially the social network **** and enjoy.

You really don't even need an app from the market like the guy suggests in that thread. If you just dial *#*#INFO#*#*, then go to Phone Information, then scroll down to 'Set preferred network type' and select CDMA auto (prl) from the list.

what software is that use to show the CPU and Battery usage.
Thanks
Actually that CDMA/GSM fix, can it be applied through a rom? I'm pretty sure that's a built in phone setting where you have to dial through the keypad. Regardless, think of it this way. Processors and memory run off of voltage. The more it's in use the more power it will take. Now undervolting and underclocking the CPU is an obvious fix but also the memkiller settings. The more memory that is in use the more power is being taken up. This is why AOSP has better battery life than Sense under the same circumstances. With a more aggressive memkiller you can further increase battery life. I am going to build aggressive settings in my next release of my rom but for custom settings you can always get Autokill from the Market, assuming your phone is rooted of course.
I'm getting FANTASTIC battery life on the latest Fresh ROM.

Haven't tried setCPU, though it does look nicer.
And SystemPanel, which is excellent.

Has setcpu been updated with native evo support, or are people still rocking N1 settings?
You get OC Widget by searching "overclock widget" in the Market. However, I don't see the need for it since the EVO automatically scales the CPU clock, and we can't overclock.

I guess i should have tried spelling out overclock instead of OC (DUH).. lol, and i have heard that, and have no doubt that it is true, but some people are claiming it has given them some improvement in battery life... Maybe its just a placebo effect, but i am gonna run a few tests and see what i can come up with....
I read a post on another forum from a guy that sounded like he REALLY knew what he was talking about and said the same thing you did but with some pretty big words and tech talk to back it up. But hey.. its free, and i like trying new stuff... even if its so i can see it for myself that it doesnt do anything.
Am I the only one that realizes overclock widget and setcpu don't work on our phones? I have tried both on 3 different ROMs and checked through a adb shell the cpu usage while the phone was asleep and neither one works no matter what I set the programs to.
Awesome, I've officially made it >24 hours on a single charge! (Though I did plug it into my laptop for 3 minutes to transfer some stuff)

Speeds are still fine here. Probably just an issue in your area. The Tulsa market is always varying widely between 1Mb/s and 6 Mb/s. Fastest speeds are usually after midnight when traffic volumes are lower.
i just ran a test in the bronx and i got 2.84 down and .19 up. i had a similar issue yesterday but i thought it was teh network.
why would they do this now though, wehn they just releaesd an update to enable hsupa on stock roms...?
Yeah the download is fine... it's the upload that seems to be throttled (or very inconstant).
Nothing has changed. And I know for a fact that they are installing a **** ton of circuits daily to help the backhaul issue. There are too many variables to even guess why your speedtests app is giving you low numbers. I will say that they are doing lots of work so maybe its related ?

This is most likely.
I'm on CM7 7.0.3 and hit 2.8Mbps down and 1.2Mbps up.
I find the speedtest results to vary widely from test to test. Not sure if that's the network, the application, the weather, solar flares or cows jumping over the moon, but I wouldn't draw any conclusions without a long-term test. Just over a week ago I made a post asking about losy signal - turns out AT&T was upgrading the cell sites. Now I'm getting over 5MB down and 1.5 up. So be careful you don't go on a wild goose chase.

I wonder about the phone itself. I notice that My bars are constantly going up and down and I am not even moving. I also notice WIFI signal strength jumps around the same way. /Shrug...
I know chasing speed test can be a wild goose chase... I have satellite internet at home and dealing with speed issues is normal part of the day.
With that said I've noticed lately the my generally good upload speeds have seem to be restricted. Is it coincidence the slowdown is at a time when AT&T is rolling out updates to users... maybe who knows.
1. Tests vary. Fact of life.
2. It's AT&T... don't expect much and you won't be surprised.

Speeds wildly vary from place to place. Just moving a feet feet even makes a huge difference. This is why AT&T is trying to buy T-Mobile...to have the needed bandwidth to stabilize their data network.

Got 5.4mb/s after update.

Just wanted to show off. How do I take a screen shot if im not rooted. All the apps in the market say you need root.
Use a digital camera...
There's a way with the SDK, but I don't remember how to do it.
Using the sdk is easy. Once you download it, you can have it setup and working in under ten minutes. It's a pain to have to do it this way, but if you don't want to root, it is a viable option.

The sad thing is I ran a speed test on my old iPhone 4 (used by my wife now). First test right off the bat I got 5.2 MB/s down LOL. The "4G" Inspires aren't much faster than the "3G" iPhone 4's due to AT&T's bull****. If I recall correctly the iPhone 4 is HSPA but not HSPA+. The Inspire is theoretically capable of 14.4 MB/s but we're only getting half that if we're lucky. Only when AT&T gets true 4G (LTE) will we start to see the 4G LTE phones start to pull away speed wise. Anyway, 2-4 MB/s is more than enough for most typical smart phone tasks, these days anyway.

-Are you wondering what "sideloader update is"? are are you asking what update did I get?
-Overclocking just raises your CPU to speeds that your phone wasnt originally intended to do. It will make your phone a bit snappier and some things will run faster, but you must be very careful not to raise the CPU level too far, you could damage your phone permanently.
-To overclock you must have a custom "kernel" with the ability to "overclock". If you have flashed a custom rom then chances are you have one. Or you can download one and flash it after the rom, BUT, make sure it is compatible with your rom or could get bootloops and have to restore a backup. ALAWAYS MAKE BACKUPS WITH CLOCKWORK! they will save your life!
-The governer, in my understanding, just tells the CPU what speeds and frequencies to use and when to use them, i always just imagine a highway of cars, the cars would be the information, and the highway the paths to where the information goes, the governer just manages all this information in ways to conserve battery life or just speed things up, Smartass is a Schedular that somebody made that manages it all verry well. and kindof revolutionized linux systems.. or is that BFS?
- Just use smartass as your daily governer. Make a profile for SCREEN OFF in setcpu, use powersave or conservative and put the CPU speeds at 245/345 or somethin low like that. and you should be good.
WHat update? the hsupa update??lol that was like a month ago....

What does that mean? Not as much polution to distort our signals?

Any tips for saving battery in bad signal area?

I know this is normal but it seems like its the worst with my thunderbolt. If I'm in a bad signal area, my battery just tanks. Worst then any other smartphone I've ever had. I'm running CM7, but I'm pretty sure it did the same when I was stock. I know I could technically go into airplane mode but I don't want to do that. Does turning off data help at all? I don't have any sync turned on so I don't think anything is trying to connect that can't but I'm not sure. Any hints or suggestions?
when I'm home I constantly have X cause I'm in my basement. I just have the Toggle switch set to 3g since 4g isn't available.
Go into this and whats your biggest drain? (i keep display at 50% 100% of the time)

I don't have any sync turned on so I don't think anything is trying to connect that can't but I'm not sure. Any hints or suggestions?

Well IMHO, one of your biggest issues is that you're using CM7 in the first place. I know plenty of people have great battery life with it etc. etc., but I'm with you on this one. I work in a restaurant 14 hours a day with horrible cell phone reception cause the building is just all concrete. My phone just diesssss, but when I check into my battery life, its all ass backwards.
Take scoobarSTI's picture, and look at your battery info. You'll see that Display for you is probably taking up 5% of your battery life. 5 F-ING percent. While android system, cell standby, and cell idle take up an estimated combined 70% or so. It's just something with CM7 i guess. Hes using a sense based rom. For right now, CM7 clearly still has is quirks, but for great battery life with bad reception, CM7 just ain't gonna cut it.
I did help myself just a teeny bit, and that was by setting profiles in SetCPU. It gave me maybe an hour extra a day to my battery life.

lol I dunno. I know pretty much the whole time I'm in my room I have n X for service. Been here all day because with heat index it was like 108 today.
I'm running Gingeritis 1.2 it's a different GB build then the leaked version out now.
I was running cm7 and loved it, but wanted to try this new GB build out and I'm loving it.

Weird thing is, is that if I'm in decent to good signal I get awesome battery life. So for me its not like I always get bad battery life, just wanted to know if there was any tips to help with this.

try this app and see if it helps. Your phone may be searching for signal but I know finding 4g signal kills its quick.
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.andirc.lteonfoff&feature=search_result
automatically connect to wifi "if" the place you are at has it.
get extended battery
try another rom
thats about all i can suggest. good luck!

All that app does is do the same thing as hitting #*#*4636*#*# on your dial pad. Take you to a "testing" menu and hit "Phone Information". On sense roms, you'll have "CDMA Auto/LTE" (or something like that) selected under "Set Preferred network type". On the AOSP roms, we have it selected as "Unknown". If you switch out of "Unknown", i'm pretty sure, you can't reselect it, which means no 4g. We have the equivalent to this in our network setting menu.
I just never found much of a difference in toggling between 3g and 4g in AOSP anyhows

Not positive why, but Slayher used to tweet that it could bork your data to the point you would have to reflash the rom

Well today I went with just toggling data off and it seemed to have helped with my battery life. Not sure if I just got lucky and had a good day at work or what. It happens every once in awhile but hopefully that works for now on.
Switch your phone to CDMA auto (PRL) to disable the LTE radio at least, otherwise all you can really do is put it in airplane mode. IMO signal loss is the number one problem with battery life on the TB, especially if you don't have a 4g signal.
Depending on the rom you're using, there may be a shortcut in settings, otherwise dial *#*#4636#*#* to get to the radio options.

Throttled Data Speeds with 2.3.4

I've been messing with 2.3.4 and the latest radios and in places where I get 40+mbps I've been pulling 10mbps max. I have a feeling each radio update fixes connectivity but messes up the data performance.
Just reverted back to rooted OTA froyo 2.2.1 with 627r radio and the speeds are back to normal.
Anyone else seeing the same issue with the new OTA?
I can confim the reduced data speeds. My phone updated by itself.
I used to get steady 20mbps, now I'm pressed to pass 9mbps.
I will say though, the upload has improved.

I just ran about 30 tests w mr2, 802, and 906; 10 each. All results were comparable, and nowhere near 20-40mbs. So I'm going back to 906. Why? Because its newer and bigger, and that means its better. Right?
Suburbs of Philly, all tests within my office. I'm a hard worker...

I've ran over 6,000 tests over the last six months and this is 100% noticeable to me. Now back to froyo and stock radios gives me exactly what I've been getting before. Not sure if I could keep stock froyo radios and one of the gingerbread ROMs..

I don't mean to piss in your corn flakes, but I'm NOT seeing this. Not that speed tests even report remotely accurate numbers. Most of the time my downloads are WAY to fast to be supported by the numbers I get back on many of them. I have no issues getting 35 to 42 Mbit out to New York.
Allow me to explain.
Buffers in the Froyo kernel were outrageous and misleading. They caused tests to be misleading, and basically false.
The Gingerbread kernel has more reasonable buffer levels. Hence what you see is more accurate.
I can make a kernel mod that will change the buffers to see that you are getting 100 down, and 50 up. Doesn't make it true.

That would explain the guy who posted screen shots suggesting he was getting some stupid number like 518Mbit down.

Actually I happened to have a Pantech UML290 AirCard and when swapping SIM from Thunderbolt, I'm getting the same exact speeds as what I see on my bolt. So at the locations where I'm seeing 50-60mbps I get them on both my computer AND my Bolt using Froyo and stock radio.
Yesterday, same location, 53mbps on my computer, 9mbps on Gingerbread Bolt.
Not cool.

Guys, just listen to Adrynalyne, he knows what he is talking about. If not, stay on Froyo, enjoy decreased performance and battery life but as long as you get 40MB down speed then who cares. >.>

I get all that except the fact that downloading using pantech I get 6.4MBytes/sec vs gingerbread radios where I get 2 max usb tethered to my pc. It used to be around 6MB/sec as well.
Look I'm not trying to downplay anything here, I'm glad that people are happy with gingerbread, I'm just reporting my own findings and sharing my recorded data with you. I would love to have both, but the major reason I bought bolt is the network performance...

You must have special service.
Most Bionic users are only seeing 9-12 as well.

Serial data transfer rates cannot be equated accurately to megabytes per second.
I always thought the old numbers were wonky. Speed tests on the TB would always show ~20Mb while my wifi connected Xoom would report ~9-10Mb.
Now, both the TB and the Xoom report ~9-10Mb.
