[Q] Poor HD video playback on VI 4.0.1 - HTC Sensation

Hi guys. Apologies if this question has been asked before.
I'm using VI 4.0.1 and SebastianFM's 1.30.4 kernel. Whenever I play 720p files (haven't even tried 1080p) using MX video player, it's choppy and stutters every few seconds.
I usually use the S/W decoder because the H/W decoder simply doesn't work. Screen goes blank and video never plays.
I've had this problem for quite a few versions of both kernel and ROM. Is it just because VI doesn't have a working HW decoder? Or is there something I'm missing?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ARHD, Bricked kernel, DicePlayer - 720p/1080p HW accelerated works and no lag.

Hm, I'll try DicePlayer when I get home. See if there's a difference.

ICS roms choppy video fix

I couldn't find a video player that would work with cyanogen mod 9 ics rom because lack of hardware acceleration i found that MX video player (free) does work perfectly on my p1000 galaxy tab when set to software decoding though just thought i would let everyone know because i was trying multiple things to get it to work. I have only tried this with .3gp video though. My ics rom does everything I need it to now, hope this helps .

If you look in the description of the video you posted its using mx video player thats why its working because currently there is no hardware acceleration.
I still get like a tear looking thing on the upper right part of the screen. How to fix that?
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
Settings for Mx Video Player to play .3gp videos
I checked s/w decoder, fast mode and deinterlace in decoder settings that mad my .3gp video played fine i am not sure with other video formats if they will work though what kind of video format are you using?

When I posted this It was working with software decoder only, you are using a slimdizzy rom a nightly build I was using "CM9 (WIP)" at the time. Now hardware acceleration works fine anyways on Milestone 4 rom.
Update MoboPlayer works better than Mx Video Player
I have found out MoboPlayer is a better solution for a video player. Mx Video Player seems to have some glitches with video playback. I am using build #28 AOKP ICS rom with MoboPlayer and am very pleased with MoboPlayer it works perfect with no choppy playback at all.

On CM9 + latest humberos kernel I still get video lag for mp4 1080p videos using MX player. Mobo player works like a charm though.

[Q] A question which i can't find a proper answer for. Answers in first post.

So what is high bigmem and bigmem? I know that it gets me more usable ram with a sacrifice of something. For example my 720p mkv video playback was broken. Was it becasuse of the rom or the kernel? I came from stock rom. On the stock rom I could watch "How I met your mother" 720p mkv but now I can. So the question is. How can I get the HW accelerated 720p mkv video playback back without losing vodoo sound and others? I tried non high bigmem versions but just didn't work. Any help would be much apriciated!
Edit:
Here's the answers in case anybody come across to this problem in the future. It was kernel related. To be exact it's bigmem I think. I've installed the stock ROM (with stock kernel ofcourse) and the video just started using the hw decoder. smooth 720p mkv. No lag at all. With subtitles. After that I installed a kernel with bigmem ( marmite 5.1 stock edition) and the video playback no longer worked. Now I'm using stock ROM with Simple kernel. Damn! I didn't know the stock ROM is faster than the AOKP one.

thanks for the tip but it didn't work for me. I can hear the sound but no video. After a few seconds the player freezes. Nowhere near compared to the stock. Anybody please help. I don't know whether it's the rom or the kernel. I'm using rasbeanjelly with marmite v5.

try air kernel or matrix
or it maybe the case of just re-flashing the ROM

I'll try matrix kernel! I've used air kernel for about 2-3 (when new version came out I upgraded immediately) but I could not watch 720p mkv either. I really miss 720p mkv playback feature but I just don't wanna go back to stock. So all my hope is in matrix kernel

yes it's really cool! Latest rasbean jelly is 4.1.2. I would flash the stock rom if it had volume rocker music controls. it's the only thing which is holding me back.
On my Vibrant which is the same hardware, I use MX Player, generally h/w acceleration for video and set audio to software decoding. Play most MKV with no problem. The older version 1.6 also have a fast software mode that make it capable of playing almost any videos smoothly, but they took it away with the new version.
The bitrate of the video and your internal storage read speed do determine the playback smoothness.

I'm using mx player too but it only plays that in software decoding mode. When I choose hw decoding mode it says that it cannot play it in hw decoding mode. Hw+ decoding mode won't work either. Tomorrow I'll flash back the stock rom with different kernel. See if it works.
Ps: Matrix kernel didn't work either. No hw playback.
It means the player do not have codec to decode that video, maybe you should reencode it to h.264 in mp4 container.
Also I recommend keeping a copy of the MX Player 1.6, it can even manage most hd video in software fast decoding. Sure it won't be highest quality, but the Nexus screen isn't exactly HD.

Playerpro music player has volume rocker controls.
If I recall correctly while the vibrant has basically the same hw it also has different hw. Including decoders. Like with the missing encoder for 720p video recording with the camera for example.
Can't remember exactly but I think it was Samsung with the galaxy s line that was able to play back mostly anything because they included encoders and all the licensing that goes along with it. Then again maybe not. I'm sure others know more or you can just investigate it yourself

[Q] Choppy video playback, even @ 720p.

I'm not sure how many of you have this problem, but I'll try to explain it anyway, just to see whether I have a chance at solving this.
I have a Transformer Prime, and my HTC Sensation 4G. My default media player is MX Player. On my Transformer Prime, I'm able to stream 720p mkv videos from my desktop server and use the HW+ Decoder. Playback is perfect smooth.
Now, the problem comes with playback on the HTC Sensation 4G. I've tried streaming off network, and it's extremely choppy with slow frame rates, and I'm unable to use the HW+ Decoder (Error message appears, only S/W displays video, and that's choppy).
I've tried moving the video to my Class 10 MicroSD, and I'm still getting choppy frame rates, and am unable to use HW+ Decoder.
My ROM and Kernel is as follows: HyperNonSense 3.5, Faux 10b6
So... Anyone have luck playing 720p mkvs on the Sensation? FYI, I'm talking about Anime videos with embedded ASS subtitles. I'm starting to think it could be a slower CPU/GPU but I'm unsure.
Am running 1080p videos... Try BS player or dice player.... Both are good hardware accelerated player than MX

[Q] Problem with playing 720p .mkv

I have problem with playing 720p mkv files on my P3100(stock 4.0.4) i`ve used stock videoplayer for most of non hd videos but if i use it for 720p mkv the tab resets itself. I tried Mxplayer but with the same result. The only player seems to work with HW acceleration is VLC. Does anybody faced similar problem?

[Bug Report] lost video smoothness using hw+ in 1.7.33

Hi. I recently upgraded to v. 1.7.33. Unfortunately, video playback is no longer smooth using hw+. In fact, now I cannot tell the difference between sw, hw and hw+ playback.
I have hardware acceleration on. I have installed the custom codec and the mx player codec from the android store.
My phone is a Nexus 5 running Lollipop.
In previous versions the hw+ playback was extremely smooth, and there was a real difference between it and sw. Now they are the same. The playback occasionally stutters and some sort of interlacing lines often appear.

There are lot of video lagging issues reported around the world. It's not limited to MX Player. Many others also facing.
Many people has reported that even it can't play videos smoothly with H/W decoder. There are some occasional stuttering. H/W decoder uses android native mediaplayer interface to play the video. If any problem on H/W decoder, mostly it will be from the rom. So, my conclusion is tgat it looks android 5.0 itself has issues.
There was a similar report earlier. But, developer can't reproduce it in his nexus 5. If he can reproduce the issue, then there is a chance to find a workaround.
Can you share the link of any video that has issue?
I was watching 'Only Fools and Horses', season 6, episode 5, 'sickness and wealth'. I downloaded it from here:

(perhaps me viewing this old series in this way is not perfectly legal, but its one of my favorite series and I don't have the means to access it in any other way - my apologies if I should not have posted the link).
