[BUG?] GPS/Location Services - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have posted this on Titan forum as that's the handset I noticed it on.
After 8107 updated,
With Location services turned on - I was getting average 12 hours of usage.
With Location serivices turned off - I am getting average 38 hours and still counting with 23% battery remaining.
All the usage patterns are identifcal, may be an email or two more or less. The travel, network coverage etc is same from home to work on all days.
Does anyone else see on other handsets?
Before I write to HTC, I just wanted to check if any other OEMs had same experience on more/less serious scale after 8107 update. It might help to find out if it is OS or OEM issue.

Just a bump as it seemed to have gone unnoticed

very basic battery question

I'm not new to the world of ppcs by any stretch of the imagination...but i have one question which has always puzzled me. How much strain does checking email every 5 minutes have on my battery? I have a gsm touch and can't seem to hold a charge for more than a day with very minimal usage. A typical day for me is 2 or 3 short phone calls and several texts..in addition to checking for new email every 5 minutes. Would I be correct in assuming that to check for email my touch is awakened from standby..thus causing the drain?
Js
You are correct, but also consider that when it connects to check email it is using the radio to connect to the network. So essentially you are having the radio on almost ALL DAY. Similar to a voice call all day. Battery is then drained by the radio usage to talk to the network.
does the same apply to a push mail setup?
well...am i essentially doing the same thing by having GPRS always on? In other words, is this going to drain my battery at the same rate whether i'm checking for mail every 5 minutes or every hour?
No it is not the same for Push email. Push email wakes the device and delivers the mail when there is some. As opposed to the device connecting and querying for mail, the device gets woken (sp?) up and gets delivered the mail for Push. Push is a much more effective way of getting your mail... I forward all my mail to my hotmail account which then gets pushed to my device via Windows Live.
Regarding the always on GPRS... yes and no. Yes you are connected and draining the battery but just being on doesn't use as much as actually pulling or sending data. The difference is negligible and really irrelevant. I would say that you turn off GPRS all the time if you are trying to save on battery life.
Make sense?
You may want to install Battery Status and turn on the current drain option. While a bit of a catch 22, considering the screen has to be on for you to see what the drain is, thus causing a higher than idle drain. At least you can get an idea of what your device is draining and see if changing settings makes a difference.
Link to Battery Status (not sure if this is the current version)

The other suggestion is to consider changing ROMs. I have a GSM Touch and the factory ROM was really poor on battery life. I have been using the Blue Touch ROM version 2.10 (not the newest version) listed in the Elf upgrade section. I can now go more than one day without charging the battery, with push e-mail activated.

android.process.media has started sucking bandwidth

Hi guys,
In the last couple of weeks I noticed my data traffic increased hugely (it used to be around 10MB for a week or so) up to the limit where my phone provider (Vodafone) told me I had reached the limit for my contract (500MB in 7 days). I did some research and it seems that the responsible process is android.process.media, which downloads i don't know what i don't know where at crazy speeds, some megabits per seconds, then stops, and then does it again after some hours.
I really have no clue what this process is doing, and why, since I don't remember changing anything since the time when this problem was not occurring. Any clue? This is really annoying because for the moment I have had to switch off 3G connectivity completely.
BY THE WAY: I don't know if this could be related, but a couple of days ago I was driving in my car and turned to google maps to get my location. Latitude was active and it kept saying that I was in China (!?!?), then as soon as my GPS receiver fixed the signal my location changed to the correct one, and then again back to China etc. For a while I thought that my google account could have been hijacked, but:
1) is it really possible for android malicious apps to steal your google account password?
2) that did not happen again, it just stopped after 10 minutes or so
3) I changed my password just to be sure, but now I am really wondering what malicious apps can do in Android...
I am running the basic nk02 rooted version of the original 1.6 Donut from HTC.
Thanks for your help,
Andrea
I have the exact same problem on a different phone with a different ROM... did you ever find a solution? I hit 5gb in 7 days :/

Mystery 12 O'clock Data Consumption

Hiya!
I have been tracking my data consumption for my LG Quantum on Telus and I noticed that I was consuming quite a lot of data, despite the fact that I have not used it for anything more than answering an email or two. Looking deeper, I found that my Data consumption was between 100-500KB during most of the day, but for 15 minutes at around midnight (if not then, then at midday), my data consumption soars to over 9000KB (8.8MB) (it doesn't say for what).
It has been doing this since I activated the service.
Can anyone help me resolve this problem?

Update: Possible Resolution!
I noticed that my phone was programmed to check for updates over the 3G connection. I just disabled it, but I will need to wait 24h before seeing if that was the issue. If you can confirm it, please do.
i have notice this also the exact same thing basically on my samsung focus so it sure makes you wonder??and to add to that i purpurposely made sure i havent used the net or download anything or anything else since new bill and im up to 8.8 or 8.9 usage!!!! hmmmm
Well, it seems it was the 'Update over 3G' that was hogging my Data:
I unchecked the option yesterday and spent today recieving emails, checking the People Hub and even surfing a couple of websites over the network without using half as much data as before.
NOW YOU KNOW!

[Q] Cell Standby/Location Settings Questions- Images attached-Please Help

Thank you to those reading this thread. I greatly appreciate any answers to some questions that have been bothering me.
As displayed in the image below, cell standby has been a significant part of my battery life. Although the image currently displays 6%, at one point during the day it was around 9-10%. Cell standby has also been on for the same amount of the time that the phone has been on battery( at the time of this screen shot 7 hrs 4mins). What is cell standby? Why is it using a signicant portion of my battery today? I had another day this week where my battery lasted for around 1 day and a couple of hours, and cell standby was not being used as much on that day.
My next question is what are the differences between each of the location modes? I assume "High Accuracy" is what you should have on when using Google Navigation for the most precise coordinates and directions. What about "Battery Saving" and "Device Only"? Which of the two uses less battery? I would still like the functionality of my Google Now cards, etc.
Lastly, yesterday I'm sure I messed around with my Location settings, and as a result I started having a Google Now card with title "Get location based cards". The card states "to see location- based cards such as local weather and commute traffic, turn on Wi-Fi & Mobile network location". Does that mean I need to be in location mode "Battery Saving" or "High accuracy" in order to see the weather card and how long it takes to get home from my location, etc?
Thanks again to the community and everyone who is able to provide responses to my questions above.
Anyone? Please
Anyone?

RILJ wakelock (among others) killing my battery.

Ever since the 5.1 OTA (Or Google Services 7.0.99, I'm not sure), I've been experiencing bad battery life.
I downloaded Better Battery Stats and Wakelock Detector to try to find the culprit and this is what I've found.
- Connected to my wifi at home my Nexus 5 sleeps just fine.
- At work (wifi) I'm having a lot of wlan_rx and wlan_wd wakelocks and high awaken times due to this.
- When on mobile data it all gets worse: I'm getting hundreds of instances of RILJ wakelock in a matter of minutes, and sometimes Gmail often appears first on the list with high wakelock counts and times. Google+ and Keep also make frequent appearances I'm Wakelock Detector
- BBS ALWAYS shows bam_dmux_wakelock as the main culprit and sometimes sensor_ind (on mobile data), but I don't know what to make of that, since WD shows other things (RILJ etc).
Regarding RILJ: almost everything I've found online says that it has something to do with network location and that turning off location history removes it, but I rarely have location services on (GPS or network location) and location history is off anyway. I've tried disabled NetworkLocationService and every other service regarding location using disable service to no avail. It doesn't seem to happen when the phone is in 2G only.
Gmail frequently shows up in WD with high counts and times, I've seen Keep and Google+ in there too, first on lists. I've disabled them both for now.
In the battery stats the activity bars doesn't seem to be all that different from the screen on bars, but both WD and BBS show high awake times (sometimes as high as +20%). This is when on mobile data or connected to the wifi at work (wifi at home is just fine).
I tried downgrading to 5.0.1 (there now), installing Google Services 7.3.29, disabling a bunch of services, but nothing helps.
Google Services shows up as using more energy than anything else, sometimes even more than the screen, but only when mobile data is enable, it doesn't use energy when on wifi. There's no high data traffic as some people is experiencing with 7.X versions. The wlan wakelocks are awful at work though. So there are like several, independent problems.
I'd appreciate any insight on this matter. I don't seem to be the only one experiencing this.
I'm leaving a few screen shots. I'll post BBS screenshot by the end of the day.
Did you solve this? Nobody seems to know what really is RILJ.. If I restrict it to "7200" (2 hours) at Amplify it's safe to receive calls/sms ???

Easy way to find out is to test it. Restrict and then phone/text yourself from another phone. Test periodically until you're comfortable with the results.
I've having troubles with this from some months ago now. It dissapeared at some time, but it's back again.
Anyway, in my case, the problem happen when i'm connected to a WIFI network, with mobile data activated. If I deactivate it, everything is just fine. Don't really know what is causing this, but at least I discovered my problem.
Hope this help someone else.
Cheers
