couple questions about the sensation - HTC Sensation

hey all new to this phone and have a few questions.
1. can this phone be activated on other roms or firmwares?
2. do nandroid backups require you to flash the firmwares manually or do they retain them?
3. how can you tell the difference between the sensation and sensation 4g?
the reason i ask these is because i currently have a month and a half service left with my current provider.

1 you can supercid your phone, and then flash roms from any other carrier. There are also numerous firmwares available, some for gb, some for ICS.
2 firmware must be flashed manually nandroids do not change firmware.
3 the 4G has some tmobile branding, and obviously different stock ruu, but besides that they're the same I believe..
Hope I helped

thats because it is (the Inspire 4G and Telus DHD are the EXACT same device internally, externally, its only a difference of the logo, the telus one uses the HTC logo, while the Inspire 4G uses the AT&T logo on the back.
The higher build Radio from the 2.52 Korean build works amazing with the ril's from this/the 2.43 Telus build (which are also the same btw)
Never mind. Thank you.

i really dont understand whats going on here. i installed this factory rom to replace the custom rom i had. and after i flashed it and go into hboot, my phone is still s-off. can i please get a factory stock rom that will s-on and unroot? seriously.. why was this rom passed off as a factory rom when its really not? i dont get it.
Is this rom, suitable only for USA networks or it is suitable for the Europe also ?

It is pure stock. You have to s-on seperately before you flash this.

Flashing a stock rom will not remove s-off or eng mode. It's a separate process
Mind you - if you flash via sd method idk.....
Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I want some clarification.
If I run this, it will not unroot my device, just install the update and the AT&T bloatware?

Roger 1.83 update

Have a rogers one xl unlocked bootloader rooted. Can i install 1.83 then root and debrand with no problems?
Cheers
Where did you get this update from? I just checked mine and it said no available updates.
hes talking about the att update.
no dont install it
Yeah the att one if i install it what will happen i dont see why i cant when att users can install the rogers firmware but that makes no sense why rogers users cant install att firmware? Weird.
you have to be s-off to install other carrier's rom.
it depends on your cid.
I believe rogers cid is
CID-ROGERS001
Either you have your device in s-off mode...
or you need the signature to match I think...
But why can att users use the superpatch to use the rogers rom. Can someone just create a superpatch for rogers users to use the att firmware
Why do you want att so bad? There's nothing in that ruu that benefits you...

is there an RUU for the canadian rogers One X i guess it's actually the One XL

Firstly, the superpatch is for the shipping ROM on the AT&T OneX. If you run it on an updated one, it will replace files with older ones and potentially cause problems.
Without being able to safely run the superpatch, you'll be left with many of the deficiencies that AT&T users experience vs. our Rogers phones. Like no LTE toggle, and probably that issue where youtube links don't open in the youtube app.

as far as i know if you S-OFF your device and supercid then you can install whatever rom you like
thanks for the reply.
i saw a thread before, though i cannot find it now, and based on that thread, there is a different way to flash roms to at&t sensation phones.
i am physically located in the philippines and i havent tried international phones ever since, i always use the local ones.

Hi there, I am T-Mobile sensation 4g. I can confirm that yes as long as you are S-off you can flash any Rom to your sensation you like. Just make sure you have the correct firmware for the Rom you are wanting to run. Rule of thumb is ICS roms run on android 3.32 or 3.33. Firmware. Very important. 3.33 is the newest firmware but most ics roms run on both . As long as your soff and have the correct firmware your good to go. I highly recommend you using 4ext recovery also. It's a easy to use recovery that most of us use . Some roms actually are not booting unless 4 ext is installed. It's extremely easy to use and you will love it. It makes flashing a breeze. Remember before you flash to always do a nandroid backup . This is for your protection. If you have an issue you can easily restore your backup. Hope this information has helped you some. Don't worry about T-Mobile. I enjoy any Rom I want whenever I want to flash without any issues. Best wishes !
sent from HTC sensation, soff, 3.33 firmware, viper Rom, sense 4.1, mugen battery. please press thanks if I helped in anyway.
thanks for that information.
if ever this would be my first htc unit. what are the things that i need to consider to prevent softbrick/hardbrick? or loosing imei? i appreciate using ext4 was already mentioned. i have a friend with galaxy s, he wiped ext4 and it cause him a bootloop and its very dificult to fix. as we tried to use odin and got no luck.

edit:
now i got my sensation,
its already using a custom rom and custom kernel. im checking if there is clockwork recovery app or not, it appears that there is none,
how can i check if it's s-off already, unlocked bootloader, with supercid?

rogers one X n00b help thread

Hi Guys!
Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a bunch of n00bish questions.
I recently acquired an HTC One X on Rogers for dirt cheap (basically $0) and this is my first Android phone having used an iPhone for the past few years. I'm not completely lost around ROMs having cut my teeth on windows mobile phones right here on xda-devs years ago but my iPhone took me away for a number of years.
I've gone through as much of the existing FAQs and help threads as I could but I have a few questions I couldn't find the answers for: Hopefully these are simple enough for the folks here!
1) My HOX out of the box is running FW version 1.73, Android 4.0.3. I see there's some bootloader unlocking issues with AT&T HOX's with FW 1.85 and 2.2 and above. Do these restrictions not apply to the Rogers HOX? Is there a point i should be worried about not having an unlockable bootloader?
2) My ultimate goal is to get a maintainable ROM where I can easily get OS updates without having to manually reload any custom settings or apps. Being an Android n00b, I consistently hear about Cyanogenmod ROMs. Can I jump from my current Stock ROM straight to Cyanogenmod 10.1 JB? or do I have to do something in between?
3) Are there other community ROMs that's better for the HOX than CM? I'm looking for a plain jane out of box experience. I really love how the iPhone works really really great out of the box without any huge amount of setting changes. And that's what I strived for with my old windows mobile device ROMs.
4) Yay or Nay on HTC Sense?
5) Yay or Nay on Staying on the Stock Rogers ROMs (I think the JB update is available now).
6) If I elect to do all the OTA updates, is there something I should avoid like a permanent locked bootloader version or something like that?
7) If I install all the OTA updates and eventually end up on the Rogers JB rom (I assume it's a bunch of incremental updates since auto updates shows I have update 1.93 which isn't the JB rom), can I revert back to the 4.0.3 rom?
I think that's it for now... Sorry for the long list. it definitely grew as I typed it!
Thanks a tonne! I know how great a resource xda-devs was and is. Can't wait to get into all of this again. !
Rogers does not lock down bootloader. You should be fine.
As for sense or aosp it just depends on preference.

apologies for my probing questions as I'm trying to flesh out the dependencies of everything...
Does the rogers HOX need to be s-off'd when flashing custom ROMs.
How do OTA updates work? Do they only apply to a certain kind of stock ROMs? Do custom ROMs have OTA updates?
thanks,
Depending on hboot yes s-off is preferred because it makes flashing easier. You will not have to flash boot image seperately. Some custom roms have ota built in so that you are notified of a new version. Once you start the unlock process it is wise to never take an ota update for stock Rom. Aosp such as Avatar and Sense based Viperxl both can be ota updated. There are more. It will usaully state these capabilities on the page.

When you say I shouldn't take an OTA update after unlocking the bootloader, why is that?
Let's say I unlock the bootloader, but keep the stock rogers ROM and OTA update it. These are just OS updates right? they shouldn't touch the bootloader or do they?
Also, if the Rogers Bootloader is not locked down, then do I even need to unlock it? or do you guys mean it's unlockABLE and still needs to be unlocked?
Does rooting also make a device not OTA'able?
Finally, how are the bootloaders tied to the FW version and to the OS version? Coming from an iPhone, there was the baseband/Radio FW and OS versions, and sometimes a specific hardware version, but that's it. what's the heirarchy for the bootloader and the FW, and the OS?
finally, if there's a good resource that answers a lot of these "android rom 101" questions, please send along a link. I know you guys are busy!
Thanks!

Thanks venomtester, I was just on those pages when I went to check for your reply.. =)
For a general question to the Rogers HOX folks...
just wanted to confirm the following workflow:
1) unlock my rogers HOX with htcdev unlock process
2) get root by running superboot r2
2) run facepalm to s-off my HOX
4) pick a ROM and flash!
That sound about right? I'm not missing anything obvious? I'm not entirely sure if the tools like superboot r2 and facepalm have been superceded by other tools. Especially with all the AT&T specific processes...
This certainly is a few more steps than I'm used to from my Windows Mobile days... =)
Thanks again,

Step 2 should be flash TWRP 2.3.x.x no need for superboot r2?... not sure what that is.
And you'll need to flash a rooted rom before S-OFF or let TWRP root your rom if your hboot is under 2.14

[Q] Convert Verizon M8 to International...Is it possible?

Is it possible at all to convert Verizon carrier unlocked M8 to Internation version..to receive updates from HTC outside US?
Currently phone is in global network mode on GSM network in asia. But updates from Verizon are only available on CDMA network.
HTCDev has
One M8 HTC WWE zip 3.4.0 v4.4.2 91.3 MB 1.12.422.19
this file available for download.
My Theory:
1. Install weaksauce and get temporary root
2. Use firewater method to achieve S-OFF
3. Install twrp recovery
4. Flash above zip file.
Will this work?
Another Q:
1. Lets say above method works....will it restore recovery to stock? Because htc updates will only work on stock recovery right?

If you go to the main HTC One M8 threads.. they have a conversion thread for M8 to International.. and if you read it, it says there is no support for CDMA only GSM..
Verizon = CDMA

I wish it was so I could get some GPE going that has everything working. Really the only big killer for me is not being able to browse the web and be on the phone at the same time.
I just don't understand why the 2 versions of phone are so different. I mean the VZW version can work on an international system right? Doesn't the VZW version version have the same hardware as the other models just not being used? Or just maybe VZW is just a bunch of spoil sports? I'm not sure if which but either way I wish I could convert mine to work with the stock GPE.

i can only speculate because of verizon's CDMA for Voice and SMS that the international HTC updates won't have the correct radios or bands that work specifically on verizon's band.

What you should do is the following.
Root and S-OFF. Install custom recovery, flash one of the latest rooted Verizon roms from the development section. If you want, flash the radios too.
So, about converting it to international, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the hardware in the Verizon phone is incompatible with the International firmware.
