I must have installed something that included an 'advertise to you' clause. How do I find out what it is so I can get rid of it. Pisses me OFF!
I get a message every day along with a star in the top bar till I clear it, telling me I have won an iPad. AAARRRGGGGG!

Wow, that would be annoying, did you try adfree?
You've installed something that's doing that. I had something similar myself but was lucky enough to identify the culprit (it was an MP3 downloader).
You can either post your complete app list here and hope someone recognises the app that's causing it, or you can factory reset and rebuild your phone app-by-app.
Another idea would be to round up any suspect apps (one's not installed from the market or ones that do "naughty things") and freeze them with Titanium Backup. If the problem goes away then you know you've narrowed it down.
Got rid of it.
Read another similar post that suggested it was Air Push. Downloaded Air Push Detector and it identified Mechanical gear live wall paper. Uninstalled it so its gone now. Shame cos I liked the wall paper.
I thought though that it would allow me to keep it but disable the spam.
Speaking of, I'm really concerned about some of the permissions that may invade my privacy. For example, I wonder if an app that requires access to my contact list is just accessing it to provide the service it is designed for or if it is sending that info back to the designer or marketing companies for the purposes of information gathering or further advertising.
Is there any way I can block these permissions on a grand scale without individually setting them with 'Permissions' app, which of course only works on a rooted unit. My TAB is rooted but my SGS2 is not and won't be till its out of warranty.
As an example:
An app called Wi-Fi Finder has a permission to 'directly call phone numbers'. I mean WTF. Firstly why does it need this permission and secondly WTF?
What possible reason could this app have to do this and who would it call and whats the privacy repurcussions for me?

Seems that requies the phone to be rooted
Addons Detector should find the culprit.
You're not going to be able to handle permissions at all if you're not rooted. The only apps I've seen for handling permissions do it on an app-by-app basis. I've not heard of anything that do it at a system-wide level. Obviously doing it at the system level would cause problems for the times when apps do legitimately need permissions you've blocked, but you're the user - that's your choice.
Maybe it's time to learn to dev
There are a few apps in the market that you can get to block these. I've still noticed the odd spam msg will get through though.
I downloaded a zombie game (cant remember which one) and i started getting the same spam messages frequently.. Just look back to any games you previously downloaded right before this started happening and delete it

Worked fine on Nexus s 4.0.3!
Ad Detector (TrustGo)
great detection and has direct uninstall from it's UI.
It detected that Phone locator was the cause of those ads + SWTOR Status

I think I used Air Push detector to detectit was a Gear Live wall paper I had insalled over the weekend. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together. Couldn't just disable the spam. Had to remove the app :/ Pity. I liked it.
Go Keyboard
I found out who is using the Green Smiley Face ad notification on the progress bar. Its from Go Dev Team. They have an app for keyboards. Go Keyboards. If you have it, then that's the ass app.
Sucks cause I like their work but hates ads enough to delete it. I sent them a long message about killing it for me and will warn who is pushing ads.
Blahhh blahhh blahhhh

Ok so I have this installed on my phone and I have no clue what it is, never installed it nor can I find a way to uninstall it. Anyone else have it installed and if so did you find a way to delete/uninstall it?
It has the same thing in my downloads section of the market. The app doesn't show up in the app list under settings, though. It's really an annoyance and I think it is also causing the market to give me a false update notification. My boyfriend's phone does not have it installed and is not having any sort of the same issue with the market.
The only thing I think will clear it is a factory reset.
Update: I did a factory reset and before everything restored and I started using apps, it wasn't there. After I started using a few apps it was. No way to get rid of it until you reset the phone again. I don't know which app is causing it, but the few that I did open were task panel, eReader, and a word game. I removed them and reset. It has been quite a few hours after heavy use and it hasn't showed up in my downloads. I suspect one of those apps.
bump
this is really aggravating and many people dont even realize they have it on their phone. I have two nexus ones and its on both of them and on both phones i get the damn phantom application update notification. Has anyone figured out anything more about this? thank you
Where are you guys seeing it? I'm a pretty heavy app user, having installed/uninstalled quite a few, and haven't done any type of wipe; however, I'm not seeing what you're describing.

I believe the the old openhome app had the class name com.google.launcher2 this is same name that google have now used for the new launcher hence the market thinks its installed... which is isn't.
Has anyone tried to install open home & then uninstall? Maybe it will get rid of both...

Weird. I don't have that. You guys should use atrackdog to generate an installed alp list and compare them for commonalities.
Like all issues with this phone, I don't know if I'm supposed to contact HTC, google, or T-Mobile. Sound like a software issue so I'm guessing google?

I am not sure why you would need to guess in this case. It is neither a hardware or a plan problem. Google is your source for a solution. This is very likely dues to a previous installation of Open Home on an older android. As to why you can not uninstall it I can not answer, but at the least I do not have it in my installed software list.
Are you rooted? If so, you could go in and delete the apk from /data/app

Um, because Apps aren't vetted? com.google is just a java namespace it doesn't change anything or give you magic permissions.
Most likely openhome grew from someone starting with the launcher source and renaming it by adding "2" then tweaking it. The only bug here is that the market is looking for installed apps by "pname" whereas atrackdog doesn't.
Its a Market display bug guys, the app is _not_ on your phone.

Agreed, although I already left a market comment.
So I am not the only one. I have the bloody app on my phone too. I never installed it. It was there from day one and I can't remove it.
Ok, i tried searching, but I havent come up with anything (honest, i swear, haha. I did come up with quick office, but that's not the icon i'm getting).
Anyhow, around noon everyday, I get a notification that looks like a star with a small circle in it (not sure if the icon itself is rom dependant, i'm using CM7). I took a screen cap of it, which i've included, unfortunately, i didn't get the cap of the ad itself, just the icon (damn program i downloaded just for this, lol).
Any ideas of what it may be? I really don't want to have to start uninstalling programs, as it only pops up once a day (so it would take me a LONG time, potentially, to figure it out).
Thanks in advance, and sorry if this isn't the right section, but it didnt happen on my aria...(ignore the ad at the bottom of the page, since thats from the screen cap program i grabbed real fast), only pay attention to the little star icon at the top.)

Could it be astro file manager? Looks similar to the folder icon on your homescreen
Sent from my calculator
hmm, I'm not sure. I had astro on my aria also, and it didn't pop up, I can try removing it to see. I looked through my icons and none are the same as that icon. I'll try to screen cap the actual ad (i clicked on one and it went to viamob or something, so i sent the cancel text to it, to no avail). I thought i checked in running applications last time it popped up, but maybe that was after (i tend to wake up and check notifications when i'm asleep), i'll try it again.
This is at least one reason why I always buy the software that I intend to use, the other reason being to reward the developers for their work.
I buy things I use. But i do have ad-supported software on the phone as well (i like to try before i buy, and frankly, i wouldnt buy an app if the ad-supported version dropped notifications on me).
anyhow, a few more hours and i'll get a better screenie, i hope.
also, i only downloaded the adsupported drocap for THIS purpose, otherwise, i have no reason to screen cap the phone, and i'm certainly not buying an app for a couple screenshots, haha.
better screenie. If they all said "gameloft" or something on it, i'd know what to be suspect about, but they vary wildly.
What apps do you have installed
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
What happens when you click on that notification?
I have a ton of apps, probably waaaay to many to try to list, though, I guess I can.
If i click the icon it takes me to the advertisement. In this case it took me to a gameloft advertisement (previously it took me to a viamob, and whatever else it sends, unfortunately, its never JUST the same thing, or i'd easily know what the program is).
since my aria didn't do it, i'll list what i have that i didnt have on the aria (though i've removed some since, this is what's left)
adobe flash
browsix
current widget
jscreen fix (stupid dead pixel)
light grid pro (live wallpaper)
nova (gameloft game)
webkey
xformula
i know someone is going to point out the ad was for gameloft, and i have a gameloft game, but that's the first time it was a gameloft ad. lol
I also have avg antivirus and lookout. AVG tries to report things, but the first thing that pops up is superuser. Which, obviously i dont want to uninstall, so yeah. Lookout doesnt report anything at all.
It's your gameloft game lol
What's xformula?
Sent from my calculator
haha. i did have the game installed on my aria also though, i just couldnt play it very well.
xformula is a game also, by GOGN (global online game networks), its a racing game.
Ok, so i clicked on the ad this morning (its STILL coming, awesome). anyway, the ad didn't load up properly, so I hit my home button and it took me back to my homescreen, obviously. I then did a home longpress to view recently opened apps, and money lover popped up. I uninstalled, maybe that will do the trick? lol
So, after removing money lover, no more ads (at least this far, guess i found the problem)
Sounds good. Hopefully it helps others if they have a similar problem.

If it stays off for another day or two, i will know for sure that's what it was (the only thing i had deleted yesterday, after the hint from "running apps"). I'll probably go peruse the thread they have on it here at xda, see if anyone else had the issue, and at least give the dev a heads up.

Seriously. I hope this doesn't become a trend. The person who came up with it should be slapped with a series of wet noodles as well.
+1 on that. haha.
It's weird though, because I didn't get the ads on my aria (that I remember, i guess i could boot it up and check, maybe it was an update?). Strange anyway.
Haha agreed!
because i don't want to point fingers if i'm not 100% sure, if i dont get an ad again today (in about 9 hours, just to be safe), i'm going to reinstall moneylover, and see if I get an ad again, just to be sure. If i do, I know its that program and I'll post a warning on the thread about it.
waited, reinstalled last night, woke up and had a notification in my status bar. the culprit is/was MONEY LOVER.

Um then dont give it permission. Dont download apps that request all sorts of stupid permissions. Dont download apps that exist on microtransactions.
Permissions
I always check what permissions an app wants when I am downloading it, dont see why a game needs full access to my calls and messages. Having said that I have had a few games try and get root permissions, very dodgey.
LBE Privacy FTW.
I never understood why a live wallpaper would need access to my call log and be able to send SMS, so I never downloaded them. Now, I just block permissions on an individual basis when the app is installed.
Again.... LBE Privacy FTW.
This information is trustworthy and very helpful.
Thanks for sharing it here. It is very important that everybody knows what really is going on.
At least everyone will know how to adjust.

Awesome app! Read about it on either androidpolice.com or goodandevo.net. I can now download apps I would not normally and just block the permissions I don't like. (Ebuddy messenger asking for gps location)
Thanks for useful info
Why doesn't Google just monitor the market at the first place?
Good post!
Regarding permissions - note that sometimes a free applications requires "strange" permissions that seems irrelevant to the actual app, for it's monetization solutions (in app ads, registration etc.) Usually the dev explains it in the description, so always good to read
agreed. The permissions apps are asking for lately are getting out of hand. I'm always really careful when updating or installing a new app.
thank for info
OMG this is harmful. Does any Android-form Anti virus scan this ?
I don't think anything ever came of that particular issue, or at least wasn't common in the wild. But it's almost on a weekly basis now that you do hear about malware in the wild. It's not that widespread yet, but it has the potential to be.
As always the best defence is common sense. Don't install apps from untrusted sources, read the comments and ratings, and always check the permissions before installing. If you install warez that borks yours device, you have it coming!

But some of them change when messages/calls have been received and as such need to access them in order to work.
I shall certainly be more careful in the future.

Hello guys, im the developer of Root Call Blocker, an advanced call and SMS blocking app for rooted phones.
The app's home is here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051274
We have had multiple reports that blocking is not working sometimes on the American sammy phones, so we need some nice people to do some testing.
You can use the Groups function of the Lite version to do the testing - it gives you almost everything youd want from the app anyway.
Please post comments here, but also use the "Write to us" dialog in settings.
This is great, my bug with calls comng through sometimes when call waiting with more than 1 number was fixed in 165! Thanks a lot!
Enjoy... and remember, an update is always just around the corner!
Could you guys please test the following behavior for me:
1. How the app behaves when a blocked number attempts to connect during call waiting
2. How a blocked caller is handled when "Dont answer" is set as the reject method and you are currently on the phone and have not enabled blocked call vibrate notifications within the app itself
Dont forget to send logs with descriptions as well.
Come on people, i really need some feedback on this!
Come on guys - feedback will help me help you!
Awesome, working perfectly here thanks. Dont thing ive ever had issues with this app (maybe once had to do a manual license check)...
Thanks, could you please test the behavior i described above? Its very important!
Guys, an update has been rolled out. It contains an important new workaround thast needs to be tested.
It may help those people who have data issues, especially on LTE enabled phones sometimes.
Please help me test this by installing the app, rebooting and waiting for data to return with the screen on. Please wait 3 minutes at least before sending logs via "Write to developer" in the app.
Dont forget to include a description. Thanks!
Working perfectly for me! Thanks, this is absolutely top class. Ive been using CM as well, great app too.
Enjoy. And dont forget that im always checking these threads, ao comments and suggestions are welcome!
Any issues to report?
Maybe found a bug... just maybe
This actually sort of saved my a$$ so not sure if I should list it as a bug or not LOL anyways I'm using Miui on a HTC Desire Z and I loaded my root blocker pro and added a password and put it in hidden mode. I always back up my blocking settings so I forgot how to load root blocker pro when it's hidden, so I went into the settings into manage applications, then I uninstalled root call blocker and re-installed it and said no to the restore, got into the setting and restored manually. Could be a security flaw, what do you think?
There is no way to prevent this other than taking your sd card out. Its an android flaw.
Yes, its a problem with android itself!
Any issues to report?
Not sure if it the app or not. I have an evo shift. Im using the free version and ever since i installed rcb i lose all service sometimes, data and phone. A reboot fixes it. Like i said i never had this problem before i installed rcb. On a lighter note it works great awesome app! I will be buying when i figure out if it rcb or not

RCB will only interfere with data at first run, so it isnt the app. Bad radio, bad signal, pretty much lots of possible reasons...

Yea maybe but it can be also usefull for them because if someone had blocked ads before installing their app with airpush them they could get 5 insted of 1 star in market only because of ads.
Also a lot of these developers say that if someone don't want ads anymore they can use opt-out. This application do same thing.
I know that blocking ads isn't good for developer who use it (I'm also uning Admob ads and there is AdFree which block these ads too) but if I would ever use Airpush i will prefer to get 5 insted of 1 star rate. Peoples who rate app 1 star only because of Airpush unistall this application and don't click ads anyways.
I hope you understand what i mean.
P.S Sorry for my english
I agree rafalswiech3. I would NEVER put up with those malicious Airpush adds from any app, that has to be the most evil way a developer can make money. I will gladly pay .99-4.99 for an app to support the dev, even if the app has a free version that does the same function. I have in the past and will continue to purchase the paid versions of apps to show support even if its not something I use frequently. I dont even really mind an add in the app that I see when I'm using the app, but I have no respect for a developer that wishes to clog up my notification bar with an add when I am not even currently using that app. As I stated above I will not have an app with those malicious AirPush adds on my phone. rafalswiech3 made an excellent point, if I ever see an Airpush app I will rate 1 star in the Market and advise not to use it. At least with Airpush Blocker I would not know the app is of a malicious nature and that would spare its rating.
Using this together with AdFree....nice..no more ads!
Thanks.

normally i would agree with your opinion, but not when it came to leadbolt. today i found a link on my home screen that i didnt put there. 5. min. later there is an advertisement on my notification bar i should try the ebay app (which i already had installed btw.). so im shocked and start searching the web for leadbolt. i came to this thread and was able to identify and uninstall the app that has brought leadbolt to my phone. for me leadbolt acts pretty much like a virus, trojan or other bad habit software, it is simply annoying to me, how this software acts. i learned my lesson form this, and have a virus finder that detects leadbolt an co., running all the time now. and i will study the description of free programs more deeply as i did in the past. if there is written something from leadbolt/airpush i wont install it, thats a dealbreaker for me.
thank you for your application ByQ_Develop
this is an excellent app...a must for all....
Both myself and partner have android phones and tab and could never quite figure out where those fecking ads came from...
We found that some times apps (because of this app and airpush detector) that you had updated suddenly started pushing ads and reverting back solved the issue but with out airblocker and airpush detector we would not have known about them...
so with airpush detector and this one we fined them block then and can have latest versions too...
This use to be a great app. Now it's just as or more malicious than the AirPush ads it is designed to block. I am very disappoint.
