My brother wants to update to the newly released htc sensation ics rom without losing his root access... he doesnt want to try any of the custom roms... is there any way to do that?

Yeah, you can flash the official update via recovery and then use rooting tools to root it. Look in the Dev section.

I would like to root my HTC Sensation in order to overclock it. But, I want to be able to get OTA updates.
I do not need to install custom ROM's.
Is this possible?
thanks.
If you want to overclock you only need to flash a different kernal you can keep the stock ROM.
I'm not sure if having a non stock kernal will mess with the OTA updates or not.

I think he'll still need to root in order to flash a kernel, right?
And you should be able to receive OTA updates if ur using the stock ROM, but I'm not 100% sure. But one things for sure, u can root ur device and still run the stock ROM.

Flashing a new kernel will **** up OTA as new kernels are installed with the OTA. It's always said not to accept OTAs when rooted to be on the safe side

You have a very big chance that ota updates will be here earlier then you would recieve them. Every update leaks.
If you are rooting your device to flash different kernel, you need to get S-OFF and recovery like CWM. Then it is NOT possible to get OTAs, as it shows the "bricked" Symbol if the device tries to install it.
But after a reboot everything ist just normal.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses, and for the link from colinleeds.
I'm also looking into temp-root + OC. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168707&highlight=temp+root+oc
Ok so I got a sensation off eBay and its on orange unlocked to any sim. I root and s off and flash a stock HTC Rom great.
1. How can I unroot to get back to original hboot but with stock current Rom for HTC sensation as if I brought sim free with out orange bloated stuff.

I know you might think I am mad to want to un root but this is because I want to just get read of the orange stuff. If the flashed Rom is stock HTC will I get ota updates like everyone else would normally?

You can have s-off and stock ROM without root. S-off and root are not the same thing. Also, I believe you can be s-off with unrooted stock ROM and get official OTA's if you have the stock recovery. And to more directly answer your question, if you are running a rooted stock ROM (with stock recovery), you should be able to get OTA's but they might break root. That would be an easy fix since you would retain s-off and could just flash cwm and use that to flash su.

If you want to go back to 100% but unbranded, you need to:
1. Write Super CID to the phone (see the S-Off guide in the Dev forum for details)
2. Flash the RUU you wish to use (either 1.45.401.3 of 1.73.401.4)
3. Write the stock CID to the phone (stock = HTC__001)
4. Then S-ON, again using the S-OFF guide
The phone will now bee 100% stock and unbranded. I'd personally stick to the non-XE ROMs as the OTA's will work without issues, can't comment on the XE RUU
does anyone know if we will still be able to update via OTA means if we unlock bootloaders,root,s-off etc.... on sony ericsson phones they cant update if they unlock bootloaders.
sorry if this was already answered i didnt find it..... :/
No, not if you're not using the stock rom.
Custom roms will always be updated faster than stock OTA updates.
so when the official ics is released if i reflash stock rom i will be fine when updating?

You'd have to be on the stock rom and stock recovery. So you might aswell run the RUU for your phone and you'll be good to go.

Stock RUU.......
Seems the stock ROM's aren't perfect. Take a chance......
When the ics ota comes out it will likely have a new bootloader which revolutionary won't like. Htcdev should work

I'm currently on cm10.1 with s-off and unlocked.
just wondering if I can use the JB OTA zip file from ruu.androidfiles.org to bring my phone to official JB. If yes, can I just load the zip file in TWRP and flash that way? thanks!
If you do it may lock your phone back down and I don't know what would happen if you flashed a sense based update to an aosp ROM.

Just flash a stock rooted ROM posted in Development.
Simple rule, don't install OTAs on a rooted Android device. At minimum, you will lose root.
