Need VERY willing guinea pig- Possible S-off! - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Well, this is probably not going to work, and it's very likely your phone will go kaput, but I need someone to risk this since I don't have a device for it. I have changed the version of the hboot, and all I need is someone to dd it to the proper partition. Again, it could work since not much was edited in hex, but still, very possible for broken / bricked devices. :| Do not reply unless you are SURE you want to risk it. Just so you know, if you're not HTC unlocked, you can brick your phone and claim hardware fault. Even though I dont condone that. :X

Wow... A ghost town. Was that a tumbleweed I just saw roll by?

There were several people in the S-OFF dev thread willing to flash things to their phone. That being said, I'm fairly sure that Blue6IX might have tried this already.

If NO ONE else is willing to by Wednesday I will. I need my phone until Tuesday night. After that i can do it. I has insurance :sly:

Revolutionary only works on the original retail release software version. Anyone with more current manufacturer software that is S-ON cannot get to S-OFF.
You are one of the lucky ones, most people now are just burnt until we figure it out.

Ohh this was a OTA update for stock devices that caused the problem? Ive been around I mean Ive seen all these threads bout this and Just never looked into it as I had S=OFF and It just peaked my curiosity as to what it was all about .

Well, the HTC unlock process will allow people to change some things on their phone, like swapping stock recovery for clockworkmod and such, but they cannot change hboot or radio - and can't downgrade to a software that can get S-OFF because of it.
They ended up trying to be too clever for their own good and if you got an OTA update the unlock process is broken and can't be used, but we have a fix for that here so people can at least do that.
Until the new update starts again officially any devices you buy secondhand from craigslist or ebay or something are more likely then not on the original release software version or the tiny update from last year that doesn't make these problems.
Once the new update rolls out you should expect any device to be screwed until we figure out S-OFF since the update will come to the device instead of the owner having to manually seek it out.

Actually, it's only been out since 9/24. They pushed out this update on that date...it was rumored an update was coming about a week before, but 9/3 is way too early
Also, this is the first time I have seen an actual RUU for 3.29. All other threads that reference the RUUs only have the 3.26 RUUs.
Thank you, this was very timely for me since I was looking for this very thing as you posted this.

Yep - this is the first posting on the 3.29 RUU.... The stores didn't even have this as I got a replacement EVO yesterday from a Sprint Repair center and they gave it to me with 3.26 on it and I had to apply the OTA myself....

Sorry for a silly question but do you just Flash this to lose your Root and go back to stock?
I think you still need to S-On if you really want to go all the way back, but this removed root for me.

Maybe not the best place for this question, but where do people get these? Do you have to have a mole with HTC or Sprint (or Sprint vendors like Best Buy)?

Typically any Official update will break #SU access and sometimes cause a serious headache in the process.
If you are rooted, do not apply the update. Just wait for a kitchen baked variant to be released.

maybe fixes visual voicemail bug?
For about 6 weeks I've been having issues with the stock visual voicemail app force-closing every time I tried to use it. I tried going into the app's settings area and clearing its data, then re-enabling it in the caller app, all to no avail.
I just installed this update and it looks like my VVM is working again, so I'm hoping this was indeed a known issue and was fixed.
(FTR, I'm not sure that a factory reset before the update wouldn't have fixed the problem, but I didn't feel like re-installing all my apps so I let it go and just used the old-school voicemail number for a while.)
Is there anyway possible for me to get the update because i had s-off and then i wanted to unroot but i used gfree so i had to use gfree and ran into a crap load of problems leaving me right now with s-off and no root permissions . i need to get a new mytouch because this one randomly restarts and i cant send in one with s-off... can anyone help me out?

Is there anything in this radio other than a new radio and new hboot?
I'm s-off via engineering bootloader, NOT gfree. Is it worth the trouble to use gfree so I can ruu and stay s-off, accept the update, then flash clockworkmod recovery via bootloader, then go back to cm7?

The DS is the red headed step child of htc. I doubt we will get any full roms any time soon. We are stuck with 2.3.4 plus patches until........forever. Lol. We might see 2.3.5 but that is even a long shot.

Well, if you are on x.xx.xxx.9 software version, then the first update notification you get is the small OTA referenced above.
Then you can do the current (paused) OTA manually because we have it sourced here, which will fail miserably in trying to give you what you need to unlock the bootloader.
If you want to move up to either the buggy or working versions of 1.55.531.3 software, make sure to S-OFF it first so you don't get stuck. S-OFF prior to applying the OTA is persistant.
As to the ROMs...if you don't see something you like, just make or ( more likely ) learn how to make your own. Anything reasonable is possible, just takes someone to sit down and invest the time in actually doing it before it's available.
That is why we are here, after all, to learn how to do it our way, whatever that is - so the more we all learn and share helps us all.

Arg....seems like the devs have moved on to getting s-off and coming out with new roms and have given up on finding exploits to root 1.85. The threads for root have been empty for a while now...wondering if its time to exchange the phone or return it and want for the sg3?

You can. That is what I did. It's pretty simple.
Revert to 1.82, root,
one click superCID
relock in fast boot
ruu 1.85
flash the unlock token from fastboot, it took me a few tries before it took
flash a recovery (twrp is working well for us right now)
and then use the recovery to flash the SU zip file. Then you're all set
Well this is how it works.
Once you update your RUU to 1.85 then install CWM (flashing utility in recovery) You will just flash the Rom you wish this will give you root.
Hope this clears things up?
I'm unclear on the rooted 1.85 but from what I gather you have to have done superCID hack before upgrading to be able to gain root. I believe you have to also have superCID to do ruu to a previous firmware. I may be wrong but if your on 1.85 without superCID I think your SOL for now atleast.

Yes, it's simply amazing how many people will write such non-useful crap that serves no useful purpose.
Look, we've all been there. We all had to learn from the beginning at some point.
I'm also sick of people lobbing ignorant comments my way when it comes to some of the things I do for others, especially here on xda. Case in point ...
Over the last three days I've prepared a 36-page manual that describes, in great detail, how to do virtually everything on a ONE X. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
It's sad when, after working an average of 70 hours per week as President an owner of my LED lighting company, plus having a 2-1/2-year-old at home, who's a wonderful challenge, plus having issues with my 82-year-old mother suffering from Alzheimers, I still MAKE time to help others, most especially here on xda. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. As I said above, we've all been there, and I'm quite sick and tired of so many others (THEY shall remain nameless), who can't spend a few extra seconds of their precious time to provide a better explanation than the simple "just do it in fastboot," or "use adb," etc.
Yes, I've now learned exactly what these two simple statements mean, but it really would have been nice, and far, far, far easier not just for me, but everyone if, instead of saying the following ...
flash it in fastboot
...they instead said something like ...
open a command prompt, navigate to your adb folder, and flash in fastboot using the following line:
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img
Wow, it took me an extra 10 seconds. Oh, my goodness, my fingers are now so sore. I think I'll head to the hospital. Be back later.
Peter
P.S. And don't anyone dare tell me, like someone did yesterday, that I should basically shut up and stop "sassing" (their word) the developers because they work so hard at what they do. You know, I probably work as hard if not MUCH harder than most of them, yet I will always try my very best to give some of my time to others. Again, as I said above, it's the right thing to do. You know, maybe if more people did just that, the world wouldn't be so full of self-centred, egotistical ingrates.

Wow. All that and I'm not sure it will even work. Makes me realize how nice it is to have devices like the Nexus that are not locked down as much as HTCs latest on AT&T.
It also seems like Samsung devices are not as difficult to deal with than HTC and the locked bootloader and S-On.

Wow. All that and I'm not sure it will even work. Makes me realize how nice it is to have devices like the Nexus that are not locked down as much as HTCs latest on AT&T.

read that post...this allows you to downgrade...with you can get root...
however...you have to get some $$ off of your pocket..

You mean the one linked in the post I just quoted? Like I said, that one says it requires root.
Lots of people are saying "just downgrade" on this thread. But I don't think its possible.

So only option is to get a new OneX and hope it has 1.82 or below? I'm not even sure root and ROMs are that critical to me but just curious

You have installed something to make it slow. Since every One X I seen and used did not lag on opening the app drawer. Not seeing lag.

I've seen where some people say that it lags a little when they open it for the first time after a reboot or it sitting idle a while. It's happened to me a few times also.

AT&T OTA Unsuccessful

I'm trying to update my HOX and for some reason it won't happen. My phone downloads the latest OTA (4.0.4?), the phone restarts, goes to the install screen, the progress bar gets a quarter of the way, then a phone with a red triangle pops up. I have no idea what's happening. The phone will eventually restart again, and a pop up will show up and say, "update unsuccessful, please try again later."
Can someone please shed some knowledge. I'm pretty sure this phone isn't rooted or anything. Android is pretty new to me, coming from iOS after 5 years.
It's helping you from making a mistake.
If you accept the ota, then it's lights out for you if you want to unlock or root. Search a little bit, there's a thread with a pre-rooted 2.20 update on here. I'd recommend that. Good luck!
PS: My phone did the same exact thing. I was rooted, which I undid temporarily using Voodoo Rootkeeper, and also I had uninstalled some system bloatware using Titanium Backup. That was enough to cause the ota to fail. Thankfully.

Not sure what the problem is but if your dead set on taking the update and losing the ability to root or unlock in the near future the ruu is availible in the dev section or you can download it direct from HTC dev. I would highly recommend you do a little more reading before taking the plunge

Thanks guys. I'll do a little more reading I guess. I'm not that concerned about rooting. Just want this phone updating and to figure why this is happening.

Hold your tongue before the angry mob of pitchfork-weilding purists descend on you for not wanting to root! LOL
If you're new, I guess it makes sense, but there is a lot you can do with root, pretty basic stuff, that you can't without it. Like fixing the linkify issue and unlock the tethering app, and the built in tools like flashlight and the FM tuner.
So let the ota fail all it wants while you do some homework. Then call the shot. Good luck.

The Android gods are trying to give you a second chance at rooting. Consider yourself lucky.
Titanium backup your apps+data, factory reset. Anyone else think of anything different?

If he doesn't want to root, he can read and be better informed. GG.

i would root the phone just to remove the bloatware, AT&T installs alot of it and some your can uninstall with titanium backup some youll want to freeze to make sure it doesnt F your system up. so much crap installed out of the box. Cleanrom is good, and i have used the prerooted 2.20 update as well both are good, im currently back to cleanrom, runs stable and i dont have to go crazy freezing and removing bloat

Rooting is growing on me. Pretty much like jailbreaking an iDevice?
Anyway, I upgraded my HOX using the computer RUU program from HTC's site. Can the phone still be rooted? I read something about a One-Click Root. Can someone point me in the right direction as I continue gathering knowledge
*edit*
Can the One X be downgraded back to previous firmwares? I'm on 2.20 now, from reading, it doesn't look like there's a root.

There is currently no root exploit for the 2.20 update and because there was also a new hboot in that update downgrades are not possible either

Ah, okay. Typical rookie mistake and upgrading. Guess, I'll be waiting for one then. With rooting are there any ETA's on when one will be out, or the developers keep it hush-hush like iOS guys?
I really do want to take this AT&T crap off my phone but I shall wait

No eta most of the work on any root exploit is usually done behind the scenes more because of the fact that some previous exploits were security holes so not revealing till it is verified as working prevents att or HTC to block or patch it.
