[Q] Help with ICS 4.0 Install on Samsung Captivate - General Questions and Answers

I am currently on the Gingerbread.UCKF1 build and want to upgrade to ICS. However, after following the instructions from at least 3 different ROMs I cannot seem to get it on my phone. At about 25% it errors out. Also I am not seeing the option "Install .zip from sd card" Am I missing something somewhere?

yup. How exactly are u booting into cwm, and did u erase cache, dalvik cache, data, and system partitions before flashing rom?

I sure have. I have had to re-enter my wireless password so many times now that I have it memorized.
Been using the 3 button method but still not getting the Install zip from sd card option

[Q] Cellular South HTC Hero Rooting

I hope im posting this in the right place. I am VERY VERY new to rooting. I have read and heard alot about it but after reading the thread at xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581869 I decided to go ahead and root my phone. The primary motivation for rooting is the ability to run applications from the SD card because my Hero runs really slow. I flashed the ROM and created a backup but after trying many ways to download apps to SD, the last one read said I have to partition my memory card. The catch is, the thread didnt tell me that it would delete everthing on the card when i partitioned the memory card, following the thread i factory reset my phone. Doing this deleted all my save data and backups and now im worse off than i was before. After briefly describing my situation im hopeing that someone out there can help me.
QUESTIONS
1. Are there any ROM's that you can flash on cellsouth HERO that will work
2. How do I install apps to my SD card
3. Is there a guide on "how to" customize the HERO head to toe.
1. This is the only rom i have seen for Cell South http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731404
2. That rom should have apps2sd built in, so as long as you partition your sd card correctly, it will automatically do it for you.
3. Check the themes forum for more info.

Flashed the ROM? What do you mean by that? what ROM?
Sorry your in the wrong section..this is a QUESTION..there is a Q&A sub forum for these. i know your new but you had to see that when you were going through th forums to get here.
I am currently on the newest nightly for the Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 go to that thread download the newest nightly then go to the brainfukt kernel thread and download the latest stable kernel he has. click this link as you will need the google apps http://mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-mdpi-20100816-signed.zip . Go to recovery flash the rom then the kernel then the google apps then reboot.
assuming you partitioned your sd card properly you will have the ability to use apps2sd
in order to use it you will need to go to ur settings and open CyanogenMod settings and choose applications. In there you will need to tick the box marked move apps and then choose external on the drop down menu. once you do that then you will be able to install all your apps straight to your sd card and any that installed automatically once you synced your account you can go in to the main settings application setting and physically move those to sd card by choosing the app and it will give you an option for that. If you need any help or advise during that process feel free to shoot me an email or pm

[Q] Bricked Nook Color

Ok I've been trying for two days now to fix a friends nook and can't get anywhere. I know it was rooted before and he tried to go back to stock and in the process formatted everything including boot so it will only boot from a cwr sdcard. When it does boot i am unable to install anything from the card because it will not mount the card. I have attempted everything i can find with adb, adam outlers ubuntu recovery, and different cards of different sizes and different cwr files. I have no clue what to do now. all i can do is either boot to cwr sdcard of boot.img sdcard to the "n" screen but then i have no dab access.
What can I do?
Please Help
Update: I've got it repartitioned and booting on it owns now but only to the "n" screen with no sd card installed. The only thing I'm am having a problem with is getting the system.img file dd'd onto the sd card because it keeps giving me a protocol error. Have tried a few different things but either get "no more room left on device" or protocol error. I also don't have the serial number for the device either. by the way it's a nook color.

Urgent help please?!

Hi
I've just unlocked the bootloader and flashed CWM recovery. Somewhere along the way Android seems to have lost access to my SD card; the photo galley, for example, says 'no photos found', there's no music found, also superSU also cannot find SU (presumeably on SD card?).
The SD card otherwise is fine; I can mount it via USB and can access it via 'ES File Explorer'.
I dont know what to do here; I've 'fixed permissions' and wiped the Dalvik cache to see if that makes any difference but no changes.
I'm just about to do a factory reset; help please?!!!!

Hello,
For starters this should really be in the Q&A section, but before doing a factory reset mount your phone to your computer with your USB and copy all the contents off your sdcard. Then reformate your sdcard from the settings on the phone, Settings>storage>erase phone storage. The remount your phone on your computer and copy att the stuff back to your phone. If that doesnt work your going to have to a factory reset.

Ah, sorry.
Thanks. I'll try that.
Ok. Next time post in Q&A or you will get really flamed for posting in the dev section by other people, not just me.
Hopefully a mod can move it to Q&A.

As you have probably learned from the previous posts, its not acceptable to post questions in the Q&A section.
Thanks for the help. And for gently shunting this post where it should be.
Problem was eventually solved by 'Rescan SD' app. Recommended; does what it says on the tin.

Switching TW ROMs

I am planning to switch from MOAR ROM 5.0.1 VZW18 to CleanROM_Seven. I have had a few issues with my internal SD card (/0/ folder etc..) and wanted to make sure there was no special thing I should be doing between 4.1.2 ROMs. I am fairly certain the /0/ thing is based off of the 4.2 ROMs. To switch all I need to do is:
1. Factory Reset
2. Flash New ROM
Correct? I have been wiping the internal SD card just because I was testing out ROMs and I had nothing on there, now I have lots a pictures and things I'd like to keep.

wipe system, cache, dalvik cache, data (also known as a full wipe)
then flash ROM
no need to touch internel or sd-card for wiping purposes.
the 0 folder is only present for 4.2.2 ROMs, which right now is only AOSP ROMs.

[Q] Re-Partitioning the SGH-I727(R)

Hi All,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE (SGH-I727R, but the same as the SGH-I727) and was wondering how a guy would go about re-partitioning the internal storage on the phone.
The phone has 16gb of internal memory. This has been partitioned, from what I can see, into 2gb and 12gb. The 2gb 'system' partition where your OS and apps, etc are installed and the 12gb storage partition for things like photos, music, movies, etc.
I don't store anything on my phone, mostly just photos. So i have approximately 9gb of the 12gb of the 'storage' partition available. However, the 'system' partition is pretty much maxed out. I'm running Vincom's Superlite CM10.2 rom with minimal apps installed, but it says that i only have around 160mb available and I've begun to received the 'low storage space' error/notification.
I understand that I can use Odin to re-partition the device but that I require .pit files in order to do so. Furthermore, the stock .pit files wouldn't change the size of the partitions. Ideally I'd like to increase the size of my 'system' partition and reduce the size of my 'storage' partition.
Can anyone out there help me? Please let me know if you need more info from my device.
That's not gonna happen

how come?
messing around with the partitions will most likely hardbrick the device so no one would ever try doing it, the only way your system partition is filling up is if you are manually installing apps into that partition or the partition is messed up, odin back to stock, then wipe everything including preload then do a fresh install of a custom rom
Will do, I'll update later with results. It's weird though, i haven't manually changed the default installation locations for apps, they just automatically install there. I'll wipe and format everything, odin back to stock, flash the latest version of TWRP and then flash SL CM10.2 and let you know.
Thanks for the help Vincom.
PS - Great roms, thank you for the contributions to the community!
Odin'd back to stock, wiped everything (cache, dalvik, system, data, android secure), formatted USB storage, Odin'd TWRP 2.6.3.0 - everything went fine in that respect.
Booted into recovery, went to flash SL CM10.2 (i dropped these in 'external_sd' after formatting usb storage) and got the following error during the 'making sure you really do have the skyrocket and jb radio' sequence:
'assert failed: run_program (" /tmp/test_radio_vers
E:error executing updated binary in zip '/sdcard
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/external_sd/CM-10.2_
Updating partition deatils...'
Seeing as how I'm attempting to flash from stock rom (which was a GB rom) does it matter that the test sequence is looking for a JB radio?
Thoughts?
also noticed that it won't let me wipe 'data' in TWRP... says failed, with the error 'unable to wipe /data'
rebooted into recovery and now it will let me wipe 'data'....wtf is going on with my phone?
you need todo more reading as u need jb radio or else it will not install cm10.2+ and post an error and sometimes after the error twrp should be rebooted to properly unmount/mount partitions, i think the phone is fine, but the user is another matter..........
i guess i didn't really flash a custom rom until after i upgraded to the Rogers release of JB...? Can't remember... anyhoo, could I simply flash your SL Rogers JB 4.1.2 to obtain the JB radio and then flash SL CM10.2?
Or is there a flashable zip for the radios? I could have sword I saw those some place, but i can't find them now...

thanks for acknowledging/tolerating my stupidity/ignorance, both the 'read this before you post' and '1 stop' threads were helpful.
i did have one more perhaps stupid question that wasn't answer in either of those threads (or at least that I could find), I got SL CM10.2 up and running...bare bones. When checking storage in the settings app, it told me that my total space was 1.97gb and that i had 1.92gb free.... cool. I then rebooted into recovery and flashed gapps lite (12mb) and email/exchange. Rebooted my phone, checked my storage and now i have 432mb free...? This is exactly where i started... i have no apps other than what came with SL CM10.2, gapps lite and email/exchange and only have 432mb available.... any ideas as to what's going on here?
comparatively, i checked my 'apps' in settings, the 'downloaded' tab has nothing, the 'on sd card' tab has nothing, and the 'all' tab indicates that i've used 1.5gb of my internal storage, but when i tally up all the apps in the 'all' tab it totals approximately 40mb... I'm really stuck and it's really starting to frustrate me....
You're frustrating everyone. Do some reading bro.

went back and factory reset my phone and even though the apps are all still there, it now says i have 1.92gb available... any idea what might be going on?

Sounds like you may have been installing the ROM incorrectly. Also one of the first steps of troubleshooting odd issues is a factory reset (Which MUST be done when installing roms of different types) Coming from TW and going to CM like you did requires FULL wipe!!

A response like that is not going to help you get too much help around here. @xcrazydx is correct. It sounds like you need to do some more ready.. especially if you are thinking of messing with partitions.
OK wow thread didn't load before I tried to answer lol. Anyway dude is a brick in the making.

i did factory wipe before and after flashing each of the roms. As i stated above, the storage glitch occurred after installing gapps and email/exchange... i only wiped cache/dalvik after installing those two. I suppose i should have factory wiped to be safe...
The reason i came asking about repartitioning and .pit files was because i had already searched and found a dev that had created custom partition tables (pit files) but they were for a different phone. I just wondered if anyone in this forum had seen and/or created them.
If not, that's cool, but i figured I'd ask. The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask!
