google dot com slash phone now has the car dock listed ($55) but says “Sorry, this item is temporarily not available.”
The PDF that they link to talks about a built in speaker but doesn’t mention a audio out port for connecting to your car stereo. Could they have really left this out?
Edit: The listing disappeared after only a couple of minutes and unfortunately I refreshed before I grabbed a screenshot. I did save the help page and the PDF, although both are still accessible on Google’s servers.

After checking out the PDF... looks like you're right... no audio jack... but no real need from one. You should be able to plug an audio jack into the phone still... would've been nicer to just leave it in the dock though and have audio transferred through the gold connectors... Why Google?
Edit: In the PDF it talks about how the dock automatically enables BlueTooth. Guessing that's how you're supposed to connect it to your cars audio.

You can't push data through the gold connectors.
The pdf actually mentions playing music through the phone -> bluetooth.
There probably is a connection on there, did the desk dock specify the audio connection?

I don't think it was supposed to be up originally as it showed not available. I'd guess it would show up pretty soon though as a result.
I think it looks great, but it is really dissapointing that you cannot use a bluetooth headset while it is docked. I do not think that the speakerphone will be clear enough with the amount of time I am on the phone. I guess now I know that it looks like and how it functions, I will be looking in to another option.
The dock just came back up on the purchasing website and now seems to be officially for sale.

As long as you tell the phone to to pair with the dock you should be fine to pair with anything else.
the product description says that the speakers "enhance the in-car music and media experience." How exactly do pathetic speakers enhance audio? what's the point if it has to go through speakers instead of the very common audio jack equipped head unit.
you CAN still plug in an audio jack to the phone when it is docked. but then again i can still plug an audio jack into the phone when it's on the desk dock. I thought the whole bloody point of the bluetooth dock was so that you don't have to plug in the audio jack, what's the point of a bluetooth dock that still requires you to plug the phone in?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I cancelled my order until this issue is confirmed and or resolved. until then, i will continue sitting my phone in a cup holder and connecting an audio cable and charging cable.

I agree that having an aux jack on the Nexus One car dock would be pretty sweet, but it is what it is, and I wanted to move on... Here is what I did:
Nexus One (duh)

Micro USB cable
Plug the Kensington L.A. into the accessory outlet, and connect the audio output plug to your AUX on your stereo. The L.A. provides a USB port to use for the Micro USB cable. (for charging)
Plug the micro USB cable in this port and route to your car dock.
Once you pair your phone with the L.A. place it in the car dock and setup the audio to be whatever combination you would like. I personally use the dock for calls (because the mic is better) and the L.A. for audio.
One accessory outlet, (no splitters) one wire coming from it to the dock, audio routed through the AUX in your stereo, and (IMO) really great call audio thanks to the dock and noise canceling, which still works with the phone in the dock...
Just sharing my experience, YMMV, IANAL, OMG, WTF, BBQ...

+ 1. That looks like a really good solution. Another benefit you did not mention is that by powering the Car Dock with the Micro USB cable, you do away with the spiral lead that is on the Car Dock power supply. So easier to route and hide.
Any issues with charging the phone and powering the car dock? Isn't the car doc charger higher output than regular chargers and perhaps the one on the LiquidAux?

No issues I have noticed so far, there is no additional <warmth> on the LiquidAux I have been able to detect, and the phone charges just as quickly as it would when plugged in using OEM adapter. And yes, losing the spiral lead is a nice bonus...

Sound quality for me is great, there is no interruptions, etc I have noticed. But I suspect that this would be a YMMV kind of thing based on the car stereo used and the distance / path (if that even matters with the relatively short distance) between the LiquidAux device and the phone...

It is in fact short (4") while this works fine for my use, YMMV...

Another question for you... Does the remote work with the phone? I'm waiting for mine to get here but I had read from many reviews that the control did not work properly with the iphone, just wondering if the nexus one had the same problem.

awesome writeup... Even if this thing doesn't work to pickup calls I don't care, I always have a bluetooth headset for the car anyhow. I think I'll get an extra socket and mount it all under the dash out of sight.
Even thought you can plug in a wire to the headphone jack I want a solution where I can stick the phone in the holder when I get in, and pull it right out without messing with cables every fricken time... Most the time I don't plug my phone in right now just because of that very reason.

The media functions work fantastic with the Nexus, the iPhone does not support track skip, where the Nexus does. I have not been able to get the phone button to start voice dialing like the iPhone does. I have not actually had a call while driving to pickup yet, so I can't say for certain whether that (pickup incoming) works or not...

I have call audio go through the dock, yes. The LiquidAux has a microphone, but it is quite far away from the the speaker's mouth IMO. Additionally, the dock still uses the extra Michael for active noise cancelling and is quite crisp and clear for calls. (I have so far made several outbound calls with great results.) The music pauses, audio routes up to the dock for the duration of the call, then the music resumed on the car speakers automatically...
What tablet do I get?
I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for a tablet to install into my dash. The Archos 5 IMT looks like it has almost everything I want, but I would really like a 7".
It needs:
Built-in GPS (or enough ports for a dongle, and support for a dongle. I don't want bluetooth, because I don't want to have to worry about it losing power)
FM receiver (I know there are internet radio apps, but I want to be able to use this offline.. if it's possible)
Capacitive screen (Cause I want it) with a wide viewing angle.
I don't care much about which version of Android it has, it will pretty much just be used for GPS and Music/video.
As a side note, I'm still doing research, but if anyone knows how to, or knows where there's a tutorial, I need to figure out how to hook the tablet to the speakers. I don't really want to have to use a head unit, though that would be the easy way. There must be some kind of small device I can use that has a volume knob and maybe fade/balance controls that I can install anywhere in the truck.

Its not capacitive but it does not suffer from the glare that the glass screens have. As far as touch sensitivity its pretty acurate for a resistive device.
I dont have the gps signal issues most have as i have the flash version and not the hard drive based ones as most say the hdd must be blocking the gps. I paid for the one time map fee from Ndrive but also tether to my phone and use google maps as well.
I have over 100 youtube music video's in mp4 format ripped to the device and use those as my music and have it set to random play and it goes from one file to the next without having to select a new video once one is over.

Some good input there. I'll have to keep that in mind. I just really think a 7" would look a lot better. Especially in my F150 XLT. Seems like the 5" would look dinky, and I have room for a 7".
If archos put the 5's guts into the 7 form factor, I'd buy 2 right now. Rly.
Also, for anyone who stumbled on this, I think it won't be too hard to set this up without using a head unit. (I could be wrong on some of the technical info, but I think I have the right idea here.) Your amplifier has a 'plug' with like 20 wires attached coming out. Normally, your radio has a plug that fits this plug. You plug it in, and now the radio's attached to the amp, which is attached to the speakers. Good to go. So you buy a new plug (called a wire harness), one that fits your amplifier (assuming stock amplifier, I will just look up 2000 F150 wire harness on amazon, and that's it), and wire up your tablet to it instead of your radio.
The wire harness puts out a 12v (ignition on) wire. You can adapt this to a USB and use that to charge the device. Set it to display/wifi/gps/all other battery draining crap off while not charging. When you turn the car on, it's now "Charging" and everything will turn off. I think it should be able to 'sleep' for a few days, so it should be 'always on' as far as you can tell.
The harness also has a wire for each of the 4 speakers, maybe subwoofers too, I forget now. I'm sure someone makes a product that controls these easily, I'm going to have to go to a local car audio shop, and ask some questions. Hopefully I can put the audio out from the tablet into the audio in of this unknown device. Then I should be able to wire the unknown device to the wiring harness. If I can't find something, I think I'll just make my own circuit, 3 Pots for volume, fade and balance, some resistors or something.. we'll see if I can't just buy something. The rest of the EQ can be done on the tablet.
(If I do make my own, I want to use a slide-style pot for volume instead of a rotating one. I think that'd be the nuts.)
Wiring harness: Ignition on wire adapted to USB. Speaker wires wired to volume/fade/bal device.
Tablet: plug in USB, and connect audio out to volume/fade/bal device.
Easy cheesy.

they updated the 7" home with newer hardware but it does not have gps. I would look into the upcoming wifi only samsung galaxy tab and see if it will have gps.
your on the right track with the audio wiring however you would better off getting a cheap 4ch amp to do it as you need power to pump the speakers the way you are talking about wiring it up would basically have the android device trying to power door speakers from the headphone output amp. If you got a cheap 4 ch amp and wired it through the stock vehicle harness you would have all the hookups u need just get the headphone to rca cable and a set of splitters to power all 4 channels of the amp volume could be controlled from the android device. If the amp had external volume remote or if you wired one inline with the headphone output you could have better volume control however the turning on and off of the amp might send a pop to the speakers as the amp would always be turned up.

Nope, no amp in the F-150 standard. It's in the head unit. So I will need to get an amp.
I figure I can move this whole system to my next car (Plan on getting a new truck in 3-4 years.. or sooner if this one decides to go on me), so the amp is an investment.
Truck has 4 speakers stock (no subwoofers)
I will hook those 4 speakers to the amp I buy. (I'll have to look up how to install an amp now.. geesh.)
I will put the audio out from my tablet into the amp.
Now I have to figure out how the 12v ignition on is gonna work, since I'm now going through a new amp. I found a tutorial on instructables titled "12v to USB adapter \ 12v to 5v transformer (great for cars)" I'm not allowed to post links yet, but I'm sure you can find it if you want it.
Yeah the amp any small 4ch or 2ch if you dont care about front rear fade will work..
As far as hooking up an amp they are pretty easy just need to run your own main power wire for the 12v constant for the amp. 8-10 gage should be fine for 400-600w 2 or 4 ch amp to power door speakers....
then use your red ignition wire from the harness u get to power the remote to the amp so its only on with the ignition. Extent the speaker wires to reach your amp you can mount under the passenger side dash or behind the center consol as trucks have plenty of room under there.
the wires from the harness you get to plug into your factory radio harness are easy to figure out as the colors have been standard for a while. Black is ground but you will need your own closest to the amp as possible any bare metal spot you can find that has a bolt to the frame or under dash should suffice. The black from the harness will power the usb fine. Yellow is constant + (always on) if you want the usb to always have power if not use the red as its only on with the ignition it will have enogh amps to power the remote for the amp and charge/power the tablet. green and purple are rear speakers, white/gray are front speakers. the remaining wire colors depend on the vehicle if they have them like blue is for power antenna or factory amp turn on. orange is to dim an after market head unit display when the head lights are on.
I was in best buy a few weeks ago and saw the archos 7 home tablet for $129 almost got one just because of the deal but dont need it as the 5it i have is fine and has the built in gps. but if using an external bluetooth gps is the route you go the 7 should be great. You will just need to find your own gps app or use google maps and have to terher to something like a smart phone for data.

Seems like Android Tablets haven't matured enough for my project. I don't see a cheap 7" capacitive tablet with GPS coming out anytime soon. I'm going to go ahead and get a stereo with rear usb and aux ports, and make a mount for my phone. Should be fun. I'll make a new post with pictures and instructions, and link it here.

What appears to be lacking in the market currently is a ready-to-use 2DIN or double-din head unit that is basically a permanent in-dash universal docking system such that you can simply pop in a 5 or 7 inch tablet (or adaptable for say a minimum 4 inch or greater smartphone?) with the head unit's rear interface designed for plugging into the car's power, sound system, and steering wheel controls just like an aftermarket care stereo. Sorta like the currently available units that utilize removable electronic faceplates-- except here the tablet or smartphone itself is the "removable faceplate".

I am checking if it can be used for the sleep portion.
I just received my vehicle mount for the epic. Got it mounted and everything good except I get no audio when I plug in my aux cable from the radio. It says it should automatically play but it doesnt. I have 2.2.1 and am running syndicate frozen 1.2 rom. Could there be a setting I need to change? My phone does instantly go into driving mode once the charger is on.
You need to download the car app from the market that is made for the epic 4g. Search on your computer though because it will not show on your phone market, I believe it only shows up under the web browser version. Once you install the app there is a speaker icon you press to turn audio on and off. enjoy.

The problem your describing sounds like it's potentially a problem with your connection to your car stereo, or your car stereo. I haven't noticed any balance issues with mine.
You should double check

1. That another mp3/cd/cassette player sounds fine being played through your car's stereo.
2. The balance setting on your car stereo.
3. The cable you connect Epic to the car with is good. If the wiggling the cable produces static or volume changes, get a new one.
4. That you've pushed the connecting cable in all the way on both ends. It can take a little more force than you might expect. I think I had to push a little harder on the car mount end initially.
I haven't noticed any way to change the balance on the epic, but I suppose that's a possibility too.

My wife left my car at the airport for a few days, so I just got around to troubleshooting this. I think you are correct that the problem actually lies in the casette adapter that I replaced shortly before adding the car dock.

It's too bad they don't have a dock for us like they showed off a long time ago with the original nexus.
Those of you using the car dock, when you remove your Epic from the car dock, do you put it into a case? Is there any case that can take the abuse of constantly putting the phone in/out ? The tabs on mine broke pretty quickly as a result. Also, what case is the lease hassle to get the phone in/out?
Does anyone have a recommendation of a bluetooth audio receiver that would plug into my car's aux input? I looked at a few on Amazon, and none of them are fantastically reviewed. I like the idea of not having to plug in an audio cable.

-I had to dremel it a bit to make it fit into my radio's recessed aux jack.
-It takes several button presses to get it to connect every time I want to use it in my car
-As hands free phone, quality is hit and miss
-It has a non-standard power connection (3.5mm to USB?!?!)

If you can afford $50 then I recommend the Rocketfish bluetooth receiver.
Why? Because it's "APT-X" compatible which means your audio won't be severely compressed like normal bluetooth does. So the highs will be crystal sparkly and the lows will be harder hitting.
Note... you'll have to splice the AC power cord into a USB connector so you can power the device using a USB charger. Easy peasy.

Bluetooth is a great convenience, minus the whole pairing part (especially if you use multiple bluetooth devices/receievers like me). The solution? NFC pairing. Tap your GS4 to the top the first time, it will ask if you want to pair, click yes. Everytime thereafter, no user intervention is required, just unlock phone and touch the top of the receiver. Paired.
Sound quality is sufficient for me, I don't notice much difference in it between my other BT devices, and it's priced lower then most other BT receivers that don't even have NFC pairing ($28), although you will need to supply your own cigarette lighter to usb power adapter.
I like it so much I bought 3 of them.
I use the Blackberry ones -- the older version was called "Blackberry Stereo Gateway", and the new model is called "Blackberry Music Gateway". Both work perfectly for car use -- they turn on when the car turns on, and they automatically pair up with my Motorola Photon 4G.
Many car radios have inputs for phone/navigation systems. The main benefit when using that input is that the radio automatically switch to that input when you are making- or receiving a call. I am using a Blaupunkt bluetooth kit myself, but I would probably get a kit from Parrot if I were to buy one today. Preinstalled car radios are usually both difficult and expensive to upgrade with a bluetooth system, but if you are able to program the head-unit and get a second hand bluetooth kit at eBay it "might" be an affordable solution. A troublesome bluetooth system, like most cheap kits probably ends up with, is probably less convenient than just using an earpiece when driving.
If you're just looking to stream music via bluetooth, then a bluetooth audio dongle will work. I bought this and it works great for over a year. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-3...luetooth_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item589b9646aa 3-4 hours per charge. You can also use it while it's charging.
I've been using the Belkin for almost a year now with the S3 and now the S4 and pretty happy with it.

my car has native bluetooth and a usb port (designed to support the iphone). Any chance there's a way I can get audio to work via bluetooth? my guess is no, but figured it was worth a shot in asking.

I ordered 2 of these when I had my HTC one neither were being recognized on my phone tried it on my buddy's mytouch still didn't work got fed up and dumped them somewhere. Does this work on your s4 Everytime? Or hit and miss?

I have an Aux and Power port in my center console. I leave it plugged in all the time. My S4's Call Audio connects to the cars Bluetooth automatically for phone calls. Media Audio connects to the Tunelink automatically to stream audio. Not perfect but it works. It think they go for 75 on amazon.

My Maxima has an RCA Aux (yellow/white/red) port in the center console right next to the USB/Ipod input. I use a RCA to 3.5mm cable to plug the Tunlink into the car. Sorry I assumed since the Maxima and G25 were so similar they would have the same ports.
So, after reading some of these responses and thinking about it more, here's what I'd really like:
- Something that charges via USB.
- Something that will automatically power on when I start the car (i.e. when it starts charging) and automatically connect with my phone, but will not continue drawing power once the car is shut off.
- Not too crazy expensive.
The 1st and 3rd there are easy enough to determine. Any of the recommended products satisfy the 2nd item there?
