[Q] unroot & lock bootloader to send phone for servicing - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i got a broken power button and i have to return the phone to the service centre but since i am rooted and bootloader unlocked i have void my warranty, so i want to unroot my phone and i cant figure out how to do so with a broken power button !!!
is ther any other way, like if i just flash a stock rom and give the phone, would they come to know ?
the man over there said they will upgrade the software first to check if its a software issue then they will check for a hardware issue, they have already ordered a motherboard from samsung.
what should i do ? im using a i9023 model

If you flash a stock rom and lock bootloader they will be non the wiser
Oh and boot up at least once so it replaces cwm with stock recovery
Sent from my ice cream powered Nexus S

From where can I get a stock rom? I had a backup but my laptop got formatted

For best results, might be wise to wipe as much as you can, flash a Full ROM from here and lock the bootloader.
You may be able to play around with you power button enough to get what you want done (hint: tap just behind the power button) as you always would.

Reboot into bootloader, i know many ROMs allow you to do this directly, probably some root apps too. I have never had the problem so maybe it still won't let you flash if it thinks it's pushed in or something, but worth a shot anyway. Once you're in bootloader, connect to computer and "fastboot oem lock".

There is probably even an app that can send you to the bootloader, but i'm not sure what it would be. Otherwise i know for a fact that Slim and Pixel have the extended power menu, so that will work perfectly. Been too long since i've used others to say whether they do or not. That is basically the procedure though, so long as fastboot oem lock works while your power button is stuffed

fastboot oem lock, data/factory reset, format /system, format /boot, flash stock ROM and reboot into 100% googley stockness
Flashing an official ROM will, of course, remove the root (and custom recovery).

after flashing the stock rom how will i go into bootloader ? all apps need root

Sorry, meddled up the order there. Fixed now, just lock it first thing.
Also, worst case scenario you can always root again through alternate methods which don't require an unlocked bootloader if at all necessary.

Recovery

Ok, so clockwork recovery has worked without fail for 8 months...
then today i tried to reboot into recovery (using power menu, adb etc) and it just sits on the google screen.
I have reflashed a few different recovery images and locked/unlocked the loader.
I can get into recovery only after straight after flashing the recovery, by going to the bootloader and selecting reboot (not recovery)
something is balked here, any ideas?
(i would just lock the bootloader again and take it back as faulty, but when that is done, it boots straight into recovery, i assume because there is no ROM there)
Lock the bootloader then unlock it again then reflash Clockwork.
Have you tried using the modded one on the dev forums at 4.0.0.2?
yep, im afraid ive done that... any way to reinstall the bootloader itself?

Yeah you can find the images (there was a update to the bootloader in 2.3.2 or something) and go into bootloader mode and type.

Yup, no problem. I was just looking for it. Is the KA3 bootloader the version you currently have? Because I know it was optional to update the bootloader, especially for non-stock ROM'ers.

Yeah thats the older bootloader that came with the stock phone. The KA3 bootloader is the newest bootloader that was included with the 2.3.3 OTA. Just make sure you're using a I9020 model. Which you probably are since you're in the UK so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Oxygen is pretty nice though. I manipulated the ROM to be like Cyanogen by copying over Cyanbread. More lightweight and less bloat compared to CM7.

[HowTo] Root the latest OTA when the HTC Unlocker tool doesn't work

So, you've got the latest OTA (1.55.531.3) and the HTC unlocker tool won't work? Tired of waiting for HTC to issue a fix/resume the OTA? You no longer have to wait in agony.
These are the steps I took to unlock the latest OTA. They worked for me, they may not work for you. Anything you do to your phone is not my responsibility.
That said..
Backup what you can. Your phone is going to be wiped.
Make sure your battery is charged up.
Download the full 1.55.531.3 image. This contains the confirmation splash screen which wasn't loaded on older MT4GSes, and is the reason the unlocker tool won't work on our devices. You can get the full image (it's over 400MB) here:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/c0f....00_11.16.3504.20_2_release_227956_signed.zip

Download the CWM recovery image:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-doubleshot.img
Click to collapse
Rename the full image downloaded in the first step to PG59IMG.zip and place it on the root of the SD card in your phone.
Shut the phone down, remove the battery, and boot back up while holding both the volume down and power buttons down.
The phone will check the PG59IMG.zip file and will ask you if you want to restore that image. You want to do this, but keep in mind this is going to wipe your phone. All data will be lost.
The phone will restore the image. This takes a few minutes. When it's done, you'll be prompted to reboot, and you'll boot into a completely stock MT4GS experience.
Use the unlock tool on htcdev.com to generate your unlock code. The splash screen is now on your phone, and you should be able to unlock (I had no issues).
I rebooted at this point, just to be safe, and set up my phone.
Copy the recovery image you downloaded earlier into the directory where you're running fastboot. Rename it to recovery.img
Shut down, boot into the bootloader/fastboot, and enter the following command to flash CWM recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Click to collapse
At this point, you should probably reboot the bootloader before entering CWM. Once you've done that, you can go ahead and flash superuser/roms/etc.
Here's a pointer to restoring your phone to stock, courtesy of blue:

So if we've gotten this far, is S-OFF going to gain us anything more? Are we still locked out of certain areas? The tool worked for me, but I'm using the rest of your guide to flash CWM. Thanks for writing it!

In my opinion, S-Off won't really gain you much more. You'll have to flash kernels separately when flashing ROMs, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal (IMO).
You could probably flash back to the original release software if you wanted, and gain S-OFF with revolutionary, but I haven't tried that and have no idea if it will work.
The only thing you can't do with Unlocked/S-ON is flash radios.
Well in that case this phone is right where I want it. I've never messed with kernels on any phone I've had previously nor have I messed with flashing radios. I just got done completing the steps and I'm now root along with CWM. Great work throwing this up for everyone.

Well, where football is hosting the new PG59IMG.zip file is the only place we have it - i just found it yesterday and we haven't had time to up it anywhere else yet.
We are working on making mirrors for it now - give us some time to get set up with our new data.

No, you can't go back to retail factory if you are S-ON. This new PG59IMG.zip I found is the furthest back you can go completely.
With S-ON you cannot replace hboot, or radio - those two are a big deal - i'm still working on an S-OFF solution for S-ON people with hboot 1.45.0013.
With S-OFF I can swap out hboots on a whim, and thrice43 even flashed a Sensation hboot to his doubleshot and it worked out for him - but with S-ON you cannot do this. (and if you could, you would brick)
S-OFF is very much preferable to S-ON UNLOCKED.
I've also had problems flashing OTA updates through stock recovery manually when S-ON where I had no trouble doing so while S-OFF.
There are still a lot of things you can't do with your device while S-ON.
EDIT:
also, all the PG59IMG.zip files I made for people to flash recoveries, hboots, and so on in the dev reference sticky cannot be used by anyone S-ON because they fail the signature checks. My custom PG59IMG.zip files don't have an HTC signature which you must have for an S-ON device to load the PG59IMG.zip file.
...so there are a number of reasons why S-OFF is something to get.

You must flash a kernel if you want to flash an ICS ROM or any GB ROM with a modified kernel.
Also:
Here's a faster mirror, hopefully: http://www.4shared.com/zip/vVHQuid0/PG59IMG_Doubleshot_TMOUS_15553.html
I see the downsides to s-on but I'm happy to have root and cwm. I will however be excited to get this thing fully unlocked. I won't be messing with custom roms till then. lol

Oh sorry Lime, I didn't see that you were already hosting it...
this might deserve a sticky?
If anyone is going to mirror it please keep the original filename - we have more then one PG59IMG.zip file with an HTC signature (retail launch and this one).
If they are not named including the software version and radio then people may be confused on what they are getting - thanks guys!

You need to transfer the recovery image to the directory with your fastboot.exe file.
You would then need to rename it to recovery.img
Then you boot your phone into fastboot mode, and plug it into the computer.
Open a command prompt, and navigate to the directory with fastboot.exe and run the command:

You sure you bricked it? That's the consumer version right? If you have acces to the fast boot on then we can help but if you have you boot loader unlocked then that's tuff cause we still learning not to brick for the hd . I'll tell you what though, If you boot loop or have a black screen try holding power and volume buttons until either the screen freezes and reboots or until it starts up again. Then you can access boot loader mode and or fast Boot we can flash something.

I tried to boot my phone, but it didn't work, and I cannot recover my xt925. I have the fastboot, and it says : flash failure.
I tried to unlock the bootloader from Motorola website but it said my device was not compatible...
What should I do to make it work again?

any successful flash should clear that off. just grab your stock software from sbf-developers and flash it with rsd.

Hi,
i've bricked my xt925. I've bootloader unclocked from motorola website. I wanted restore stock rom using RSD Lite v.6.1.5 but flash process had stopped to (17/22) system_signed for 1 hour...and I stopped him!! Now if i try to start phone it show only the bootloader unlock screen.
I'm able only to go into fastboot mode and if try to flash yet stock rom it stop at first step.
[UPDATE]
After several attempts I managed to get back to the starting point, Step 17/22 flash system "system_signed"...but now i'm locked here.
I have lost forever my smatphone?

My first post due to a death
The death of my XT925 was probably on the cards since I decided to wet my appetite and unroot it and also unlock the bootloader. Everything was sweet at this point, but then I decided to upgrade to kitkat. A big risk, as it turned out, since now I have a smooth attractive-looking brick. My mistake was downloading a rom, which after _nearly_ completing, failed (after many attempts to get it). I repaired it, and then installed it using some root software. I'll have to look up the names, but now I have no response after a lot of frenzied button pressing. Bootloader / fastboot would allow me to get RSD Lite fired up - but I have nothing. The last thing I did was leave it on overnight with the recovery menu on the screen. Should I get my shopping pants on?

Sorry to hear this.
Flashing is a risky process one can easily flash something that is corrupt, or have something not complete.
One user is trying to restore his with this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551113
Things to try.
1) Flashing the fxz/xml using the snapdragon fastboot command line
Last resort thx to SamuriHL
2) In custom recovery, you could attempt to wipe the system partition and see if that then allows you to flash the fxz/xml.
3) If not, wipe the system partition and then flash a known working rom in custom recovery (4.1.2).

[Resolved] Installed TWRP on phone with a locked bootloader - now stuck in boot loop

I am new to rooting, and decided to root my Galaxy Note II SGH-i317m a few days ago. I used a method with no adb access...i think. Here's the reference thread, just in case I'm wrong: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644
I got a bit overenthusiastic, and got TWRP while forgetting to unlock my bootloader first. Now, my phone will only boot into TWRP. All 4 reboot options go back to TWRP. What is the best way to get my phone back to working? I understand that I may have to lose my data. It doesn't matter: my top priority is getting my phone to work again.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. I'm new here.
if you can boot into recovery than try to wipe cache and dalwik cache than try to too boot again it may work

Thanks for the quick reply. I just tried that, and no change. Just to clarify, the only thing I can boot into at the moment is recovery mode.
I think what I need to do is flash the stock recovery back onto my phone. Is this a possible solution? If so, how should I go about doing it? I currently cannot access download mode.
i think u should install your current rom again if u insall stock recovery you may not able to do this with stock recovery even cant get twrp back
so..do a nandroid backup and install a rom which u like stock1 or custom1

Well, the thing is, my problem isn't with the ROM at all. It's that TWRP does not work with a locked bootloader. So the way I see it, either I need to replace TWRP with something that works with a locked bootloader, or unlock the bootloader. In your opinion, how would replacing the ROM help with my problem?

It's done. It's worth noting that my root method, linked in the OP, doesn't give adb access. I'm not sure if this changes anything.
Also, I discovered that by removing and replacing the battery, my phone can power off. From here I can access download mode. Something that might be useful, especially if the solution involves odin.

tried system restore with twrp?
try it first and if ur not sure that it will work just make backup of boot , efs , system and data(if necessary) via twrp to sd card copy the backup to pc via card reader or something and extract the system backup there should be a file named build.prop in system folder edit it and do it like this :
under #additional build properties
ro.adb.secure=0
ro.secure=0
ro.allow.mock.location=1
ro.debuggable=1
persist.sys.root_access=1
find the above lines and edit the parameters as i have shown to you use notepad++ to edit the file save it the last line will give ya root access by default and second last will make it debuggable just save it repack and flash with twrp cheers
hit thanks
Alright. Since I can't find another thread like this one, I will assume that I am one of the first to have this problem. Here is what I did.
I used samsung-firmware.org to find the latest firmware for my phone, which includes both ROM and recovery. Other brands probably also have a website like this.
I used Odin to flash the firmware onto my phone - this wiped my data, but removed TWRP, which is an acceptable solution to me. I might also have wiped my data while playing around with TWRP trying to fix my phone - I'm not sure.
Thanks to both EMONESSboy and [email protected] for their help. I ended up going with something similar to EMONESSboy's solution, since the commands seemed a little risky. Thanks anyways, your help is much appreciated!

If your situation is the same as mine was, I would recommend the same solution. Just to clarify - you rooted your phone? And then you installed a custom recovery, which is now the only thing you can access?
If so, you should install your stock ROM the same way you installed the rooted ROM. I'm not sure how you would go about doing that, or even if you can access that mode, since your model is not very common.

Actually, what happend was that i tried to root my phone through Kingaroot. It shows some error at 90%. After few seconds my phone gets rebooted and snce then, it is showing Mfr LOGO only.
I have tried Factory reset, wipe cache partition etc.
I had lollipop earlier on my phone.

Backup stock recovery & custom bootloader

I've seen how to back up practically everything n the Sensation, with the exception of the stock recovery. How can that be done? I'm surprised I have not seen any mention of it.
Also, can the bootloader be customized? That super bright white screen is very annoying to look at.

Hi, I did search for it but only only found the stock rom and some stock apps. I read in another forum that you can back up the stock recovery using clockworkmod by booting directly into clockworkmod using fastboot on your PC instead of flashing it to the phone. I'll have to try that.
I already have the phone s-off :victory: How can I go about modifying the bootloader?
Also, how can I go about creating a theme for a ROM? I have CM11 installed and I'd really like to make a theme that makes it look as close to stock as possible.

type custom bootscreen sensation in the search
you will find some threads
about creating themes there are guides and tutorials
needs study
I tried that method for using clowkworkmod to back up the stock recovery, but I don't see anyway to do it from there since using backup makes a nandroid back up only. How can I browse what is in the bootloader so I can back it up before I flash any custom images to it?
I found some thread with custom splash screen and what not that look pretty neat and how to make my own. Thanks. :highfive:

What I mean is to browse where the boot loader is stored (I have no idea where it's store), so I can back up the stock splash screen and whatever else is there. I like to have a back up of those before I change anything.
