[Q] updating g2x - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hi, this is a really noobish question but i'm a bit curious. I have a g2x that is rooted, 2.2.2 froyo and i want to update it to the newest android version. Does that mean i must unroot my phone and then update it? Or is there a way to do it without unrooting?? Thanks!!

Search for how to flash clockworkmod recovery on the g2x. Follow those steps and then you can use it to flash any rom you want that is compatible with the g2x. Unrooting beforehand isn't necessary. If you flash a custom rom with an updated android version, it will already have root access. So no need to even reroot. Look around in the forums on your own for a while, there is plenty of information here.

should i update to froyo or keep it eclair ?
Depends largely on how you use the phone. Froyo brings flash to the mobile web and there might be other improvements.

Honestly, why bother with official 2.2 update? There are several outstanding froyo roms out there and they're so, so easy to flash right now, I'd guess you run a greater risk of bricking your phone messing with Ota or kies (although I can't say for sure, since I never bother flashing stock 2.2).
Just browse dev. section.

I too think you should go with a custom rom. To answer your question I remember hearing there were some issues with the drivers for the 64 bit version of windows 7. My guess is that is where your problem is. Try reinstalling the drivers

If the phone is freezin and you haven't done anything to it. It might be a good idea to take it back and get a new one before you do anything. Flashing a custom rom might take care of the problem or there might be something broken hardware wise.
You don't really need to root the device in order to flash it. But, I think it's good to learn how to do it, anyway. I think there are some basic skills everyone should know before flashing the phone:
- different ways to get into recovery and download mode;
- how to use odin;
- how to issue adb commands;
- how to root and install clockworkmod recovery;
- what's a jig and how to make it;
Among other things. Even though, you can flash most roms just by naming the zip file update.zip and using 2e recovery.

^ What he said. READ READ READ and then READ some more.
After you understand what you are doing, I'd recommended flashing one of the Android 2.2.1 "FroYo" i9000 ROMs with an appropriate i9000 reoriented kernel and modem.
CM7 (Android 2.3.3 "Gingerbread") isn't quite ready for a beginner user to flash yet, and the same goes for the beta 2.3.3 i9000 based ROMs beginning to float around the Captivate Development section.
IMHO, you'll find your phone responds much faster with FroYo, you'll get better battery life, and access to a wider range of apps in the market (since many require 2.2+). Not to mention some other goodies like Flash 10.2, Voice Search, and the latest versions of Google Maps and GMail.
For more info on the differences between Android versions, and whether or not you'll get more out of your phone, check out the Wikipedia article on Android versions.
I agree froyo is a lot faster but i am using purplelicious with onix kernel 1.6
overclocked at 1.3. Excellent benchmark.

ota on root

My thunderbolt is rooted. I am not running an special roms. I quess you could said I run a stock root. My thunderbolt just told me there is a update available. If I take it will I loose root access. It is the update for the constant rebooting.
The update for rooted phones is out. I believe it is on XDA.
If you have rooted and titanium backup you can freeze the update 2.300.... progaram and your phone won't check for updates anymore and you can save a bit of memory and maybe even some battery life in the process. If your like me you check the forums for updates on a regular basis, or better yet your rooted with a custom Rom and don't worry about Verizon updates.

[Q] If I root my Nexus S...

Will I still receive the android updates? Ive always been sketchy about rooting my phone because i want to keep the android system as up to date as possible. Will I still receive the android updates if I root my phone or will I have to manually do it somehow?
Much thanks
If you flash a custom rom then you won't recieve the official OTA updates from Google.
If you root the stock rom you will still receive ota updates. You can also manually flash updates(best method). Please do alot of reading about rooting before attempting anything. Had you done this you would have known the answer to your question. Learn how to use adobe and fastboot. Don't be lazy and use a one click root method as this will not teach you anything about your phone and you will not know how to fix a problem should one arise. Thanks for posting in the correct section!

You'll be just fine
Also, if your rooted and running a, custom ROM, you don't need OTA updates, as the ROM developers incorporate the updates into their ROMs, within a day or two usually. I don't even worry about updates from OEMS or Google anymore.
Pipsqueak approved this message.
One click is certainly looking like a bad idea as the ota does come through and then screws up your superuser. I've been arguing w my phone for a week trying to get past this and put cm7 on it.

[Q] How to put latest version of android on SGS4G

Sorry about the numerous posts, I have now successfully rooted my phone (I know its not impressive...). Now I have a few questions:
1. How do I put the latest stock android on my SGS4G? Or the latest "good" version of android on my SGS4G?
2. Since the phone is default on tmobile, I was wondering, will I still be able to do wifi calls? What I mean by that is, when I got the phone, it had a wifi calling app that turned off cell phone connections whenever I had wifi.
3. Will I be able to tether without tmobile charging me for tethering? I do have a data plan.
4. I know rooting is basically like gaining administrator access, but what are the biggest advantages of rooting? Just a personal question to you guys.
5. Last, will I be able to restore my phone as if I had just bought it from tmobile, if I install the latest, or best android version onto it?
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS. It really helps.
If you are on gingerbread 2.3.6 you have the latest stock rom.

Stock 2.3.6? You can either upgrade via Samsung's official Kies Mini software or you can grab RaverX3X's ROM-ODIN-2.3.6-Gingerbread Offical. It's based on the Kies files downloaded from Samsung just repackaged for ODIN for people having issues using Kies.
Reread above.
Edit: Stephen beat me to it. I put a CWM flashable stock link above. He posted the odin version. If you become familiar with flashing in CWM you can flash any rom... at least that has been my experience so far.

Okay I am seriously confused right now. Can we just start over fresh?
Basically this is what happened:
1. I succesfully rooted my phone using superoneclick
2. I was going through the tutorial found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16600185
But then Stephen mentioned that I could just using kies through samsung.
3. I tried Kies, but it didn't work
4. I talked to samsung representatives for like an hour with no success
5. I tried to put stock gingerbread from RaverX3X.
6. I almost bricked my phone since it just nonstopped restarted while displaying a bunch of dots on the screen
7. I restored my phone to factory settings
Right now it says I have 2.3.4 (Gingerbread I believe), but I have no idea how... So what I'm looking to do is to put RaverX3X's official gingerbread on my phone. My phone is not rooted, and doesn't have anything on it I believe. No USB drivers either. Where should I start?
And again thank you guys for sticking with me and helping me, I am so confused so if you can just either give me step-by-step instructions, or link me to a topic that has them. THANK YOU

Hello, I am new to this forum and just got my blaze 3 weeks ago. I know the phone is kind of old but I like it. Any way when I get a new phone the first thing I do is root it and get rid of the bloatware, but after 3 weeks searching and following 2 tuts from other sources I managed to softbrick my phone. All is good there and I managed to un-brick the phone both times. My question here, is there any tuts out there that can help me root my phone? I will post the specs below and hopefully someone can direct me to the right info.
Any help is greatly appreciated and If I missed sonething I apologise as I am in the U.S Army and usually very busy. Thanks guys!

First, you should never look at "other sources". XDA is the best and you should have started here
Second, wrong thread. Questions belong in the General section.
Third, if you look there is a [GUIDE][ICS]How to root stock just a few posts down.
Lastly, this phone has never been on 4.0.3 lol. There was a recent baseband update to UVMB1 but it is still 4.0.4 just as UVLH5 was 4.0.4.
Hope that helps

It seems they want us using the guide for UVLH5 although I followed it precisely (twice) and was unsuccessful.
you can disable bloatware apps with ics
you'd be able to permanently remove them with root
From what I've read on here, the Blaze is pretty hard to brick and if you do, fairly easy to fix. There's a thread on here by beastmode that lays out the exact process in rooting our phone running ICS. I'd never done it before, either, but followed the guide, Googled the info I didn't know, and it went seamlessly.

I believe the Beastmode thread you mentioned is the one I linked, and followed twice, unsuccessfully
It lays out instructions for rooting our ICS Blaze on firmware UVLH5. I (and the op) have firmware UVMB1. They are both ICS 4.0.4, I wouldn't think the process would be any different, and I don't know why it didn't work for me, but it didn't.
In that thread, there are a couple people using that version of ICS that rooted just fine. Odd it didn't work for you. Did you place the zip on your internal or external sd card?

I tried a few more times today, and in combination with a separate root toolkit app, allowing "save root," I've gotten it settled.
