[Q] Nook touch (rooting) - General Questions and Answers

Installed android form this website: nookroot. co. cc
Followed the steps, made my back-up,...
Everything went succesfull until i had to choose wich proces to start. I looks i took the wrong one. I cant acces the android part of the nook, only the basis interface.
I have the android shortsigns at the right sight, but i cant do anything with them, if i wanna go to the androidmenu, it redirects me to the basic interface.
The only thing i see, is that my nts ask for 'open advanced task killer', i can open that interface. But it's all...
How can i change the startingproces (i don't know the wright concept)? So i can fully use my nook.
I already checked the forum and the internet but no direct solution. It was also not clear which root you should take. Easy said on youtube, but...
thanks in advance

You think that was a stupid question?
OK, I have one for ya... I'm brand new to sites with "threads". (Is there a tutorial on how to use a site like this? ha!) So, I pray that I help to keep the threads clean, and post this in the correct spot, but this is my very first post, so... here goes. Have mercy on me. Just got my Inspire a week ago. Coming from iPhone (twas pretty good), then WP7 (hated it), I wonder where this phone's been all my life! Then, I learn about rooting. Loved the jailbreak for iPhone, so decided to study up on it for a couple of days and go for it. After much studying, found video that uses Bubby's one click method. Watched many times and followed it to a T (at least I'm pretty sure, I'd imagine that it would work if I did, though), yet at the part where it's supposed to search for "pd98img", it never seems to find it, even after minutes of wait. Read the FAQ, followed all instructions to a T. Can anybody help me? I've attempted this four times already, and I keep reading that other people have found it to be easy. Or... where would I go for help with this subject. I'm an XDA member and android user for life after getting this phone, I love the freedom. Thank you everybody for all of the time that you put into educating and helping others, like myself.

Try the Hack Kit. I had trouble with that to. Is USB Debugging checked? Try that and see if it works.
Ok cool! Thanks

It sounds to me as though the GUI isn't pushing the PD98IMG though as long as you have ran g free and rage you should be rooted and s off and can go ahead and flash a custom Rom, though you are going to have to flash the radio back to stock since it will still be downgraded.
Sent from Hey... This isn't where I parked my car.
OP-
Those wipes are both the same. ROM manager is just a simple GUI that points to the CWR wipe upon reboot. As others said, you will not loose root. Just another reason to prefer Android over iOS.
Gentleanonymity-
You might find that posting in Bubby's thread will yield more answers to your question. In fact, it has probably already been addressed in there.
And since you are a new user here allow me to help you a little. First thing is to read and heed the stickies and forum rules. It is rude to hijack another users thread with your issue. Thanks, and welcome to XDA.
Haha thanks for the info fellas!!

complete noob here

Hello all,
I have had my HTC Inspire 4G for a few days now. I am completely new to smart phones but have figured my way around using apps, the internet and changing my screen's wallpaper.
I see that the phone comes with tons of useless apps that I want to get rid of and I heard about "rooting" my phone.
Whats is rooting anyway? What are the pros and cons?
How can you trust the person that made the root program etc
also are there any useful websites I should know of? is this the premier android forum? are there any others out there
It sounds like you oughtta do some googlin'. There are a number of guides and articles that you can read over that will answer your initial questions. Try this one:
http://www.androidcentral.com/what-rooting
Probably the two most important things you need to know are: search for answers to your questions before you ask them publicly, and follow directions to the letter. After that, things will go pretty smoothly for you.
Perhaps you overlooked the stickied guide in this general section of the forum?
Guide to rooting and flashing by user Mudknot2005.

In a nutshell, "root" is the superuser of a unix system. Like Administrator on windows, only even more powerful. The phone runs a linux OS so at the core it is unix-like. "rooting" can mean a lot of things, but basically, it is getting sufficient privileges on your phone to be able to read/write whatever you want and from there, change how the phone behaves.
If you do decide to root i suggest using bubbys one click. I know it reads scary, but its actually very easy. There is even a vid linked to it to show you better. Good luck!

If you're that concerned about it, I don't recommend rooting your phone.
FWIW, I do malware cleanup/puter repair as a side gig and I haven't come across anything on here that wasn't legit.
Use the Ace Hack Kit and follow the instructions to a T. If you hit a bump in the road, search first then ask if you cannot find a definitive or concise resolution for your issue.
Anyone who is new to smartphones (or just android period) i don't recommend you rooting your phone..
I say learn about it some more. watch some videos, read some threads, then read them again.. and again.. to it sticks in your head..
then i suggest you should root.. it sucks to see thread saying "help i bricked my phone!"

+1 I Second that. I'd like root my phone, but since I'm in no hurry, I'm on here reading and learning about it. I'll prolly root after December if AT&T doesn't let me utilize my upgrade to the newest HTC device they have then, as I paid for this via off contract pricing. I had heard from Desire HD owners, that it is tricky to root given HTC's signed bootloaders. Hence the, what looks to a noob, as an overwhelming and potentially complicated process. Like the others have said just read all you can about it, and when your ready to take the plunge, follow the instructions word for word, and you shouldn't have any problems.

In reply to you, as well as in general, to the OP...
Well, I paid off contract as well, waited before rooting, not because I was scared of "bricking" my phone or because I didn't "trust these people" because it might "be a virus," I wanted to get familiar with how the phone operates in an unmodified state -- to get a baseline.
Really, it's not that big of a deal to root. You aren't going to brick your phone. The only true bricks (will not even power up) that I've heard of happened with some people who ran a certain function within a certain version of clockwork recovery that had a bad bug.
Everything else is a "soft brick," meaning it looks scary, but it's actually fixable.

I think people should see what the stock ROM experience is like for about a month or so before rooting and flashing another ROM, especially if this is your first Android phone.

Making a noob of myself

I am, as the video says, a complete noob when it comes to the droid os and all its capabilities. I just need to know some terminology. I've. Looked for a long time ( yes google) and I've only gotten mixed answers.
So:
1: what is s-on/s-off, and what devices does it apply to?
2: what information should I give, should I have a device question
3: anything else that you found useful when you started off?

*s-on/s-off is usually associated with htc devices but can be associated with other devices. As for what it is...s-off means security is off, and you can flash unsigned (custom) images to the phone
2: What information should i give, should i have a device question
*you will need to be able to provide your current rom that you are running, if any...sometimes your kernel/radio version...and what recovery you are using. (ie, if an htc, either amon ra or cwm)
3: Anything else that you found useful when you started off?
*this website!!! As obvious as this may be, there are tons of developers that are very willing to assist in any way. And trial and error!

Thanks for the info. I hope nore people post what they dound useful, as well. I have, as my siggy says an r800x, or xperia play, nearly straight out of the box. It's from verizon, and I remember reading somewhere that verizon does something to make it more difficult to root it, so I hope I can figure it out. [Q] Simple noob Qs re Sensation sys files.

This is my first post I think... So I'm a total noob in that I haven't tweaked any phones before of any type. I've spent probably 20 or so hours in the last few months looking around these forums but due to information overload I'm just gonna bite the bullet and ask about my problem.
Sensation z710e - hboot 1.27 all stock plus OTA updates. No warrenty.
I'm in New Zealand. My phone thinks it's in Taiwan (CID). My GPS sucks and I have read somewhere it's probably looking for Taiwan local satelites and not the ones currently over my head.
There is a system file (read about it elsewhere a while back which I'll have to fnd again) relating to GPS and an area code so it can find the right satelites accurately. Mine quite likely is a few thousand miles off :silly:
I need to edit it. I don't know if I need to change the CID or no. I don't want to flash any roms. Just the bare minimum.
Can someone with experience give me a short list of what to do for this? I got lost as to if I need to s-off and/or root. I like it the way it is I just need it to recognise it's emigrated so I'll likely lock it up again once I've done this. If possible.
Frankly, the more I read in here the more confused I get as most is unrelated to my basic needs. I just want a list of what to do to edit a system file and what order and I can search and find the howtos myself.
ps. If anyone has tips on getting the camera to recognise red as not pink then I'm interested in that too.
There is a free app on the play store called FasterFix that will change those system values for you. It works like a charm IF and ONLY IF that really is your problem.

...which requires root. So that does not answer my real question about what I need to unlock in order to properly do this. And in what order.

Is that your useful suggestion as a "senior member" here? I'm glad I don't offer such technical help in my field of expertise.
I don't care for step-by-step detailed spoon feeding. I asked for a short todo list so I could go work out how to do stuff myself. One sentence could have answered it something like "You need to root your phone, then s-off, then edit file xyz.cfg and change the CID". Then I'd know what to go search for. I suspect its something similar to that but I am unsure and unwilling to screw up my phone by doing unnecessary things.
I'd already tried FasterFix before you suggested it and discovered that, as my original statement suggests, my phone can't use it until I alter it. Which is why I asked what I actually need to do. You might as well have told me to flash a ROM knowing full well my phone isn't rooted.
I would actually be grateful if someone answered the original question. I know this community can do better than this or I wouldn't have come here for help.
Perhaps you'd like to root your phone 1st so that you'll be able to unlock more capabilities of tweaking it? You may wanna head down to this thread and check it out -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632553

Rooted and s-off. I still don't know if I needed to s-off as that question was not answered, so I did it anyway. Possibly overkill.
Tweaked the gps.conf manually (fasterfix gave me only a black screen so it's useless) and after reboot got a fix of 7 satelites within seconds. As opposed to before where I got about 4 usually and a fix taking several minutes, if at all, and not being very accurate.

S-off will really help you.. If you want to restore back to stock in case you are running custom roms.. And it makes these things easy
Now regarding the gps fix you did..
Care to explain what guide you used for manually tweaking the gps? Is this the one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17081413?
Or did you flashed the agps patch? (in sensation dev section I think)

I did see that guide and used the link in it to find my server but since half the contents in that guide weren't in my gps.conf I started by just replacing the american server line with nz.pool.ntp.org. As I had already assumed, it wasn't using a local server.
The option was there to add the other stuff if that didn't work but that simple little step sped things up a lot. And since I didn't know what half the other options did I chose to not put them in.
If there's anything specific I can add to further increase GPS accuracy/speed then I'm open to suggestions.
I don't plan on running any custom roms which is why I wanted to know what steps were actually needed since everyone gives instructions assuming it's all about the roms.

Could do with a hand

Hi I've just received a new tablet , I know its not the best on the market but I have faith that it could be good.
I've followed a few threads on this forum with out having an account, and found the information to be very helpful with my late lg gt540 and my htc desire.
now as you can see at the bottom of this post I've got a DLR_MID. it has no name on the box apart from mid and nothing on the tablet itself, so finding a rom is somewhat fustrating. as the base rom has caused me a few issues i would prefer cmx or similar, with full root as well.
What information would a chef need from me to create a beautiful and tasty maserpiece. Also so advice from someone on one of the issues caused by the rom would be greatly appreciated and I'll go more into that now.
My tablwt has 2 internal storage bays showing up. 1 is listed as internal storage the other as internal sd. When I first got the tablet the sd was registering as 4Gb. I used the intwrnal a2sd function of the rom to move some apps. Without any warning the tablet reset, all the apps were gone but I'm left with only 1.71Gb. I plugged it into my pc to see what would show up there and still got the same 1.71Gb. I factory reset to whole device and still the same. I xould really do with some help with this please.
If you need more info please ask. I will do all it takes from my side to resolve both issues (with some advice with being a noob to tablets)
Kind regards to all
P.s. if I have posted in the wrong area I do apologise as I am new to the forum and haven't really figured the layout properly yet.

Is there someone that could help me please. I don't want to sound pushy, but some help no matter how small would do me the greatest of good. I'm almost at my wits end with both my issues here.
Thanks in advanced

First thing you will need is to know if the bootloader is unlocked and if kernel sources are available. Normally the answer to both is no when dealing with no name devices.

Well first thing I would do is find the OEM and then look at the site and get as much info I could about the device.
Sadly purchased through ebay, I have made countless amounts of contacts with the seller to no avail. I can only assume they only understand money transfer, not language.
I have also made a number of attempts to google, all of which have turned up nothing. There seems to be a small house in the bambo forest making tablets out of panda poo and bambo leaves.
