What smart phone with qwerty keyboard should I get? - General Questions and Answers

I want to buy a new phone as my htc touchpro is out of date. I dont know what to get. What would you recommend? I want a phone with a slide out keyboard and for the keys to look like a keyboard, not like the keyboard as in the blackberrys that are small and hard to push and have strange shapes that you spend looking for the letters most of the time. I would prefer and Android phone and I was kinda leaning towards the HTC desire Z but Im not sure if there is better HTC on the market or other brands for that matter. What is good on the market at the moment? Pros and Cons would be appriciated if possible to make my choice easy I would like your opinions.

Droid 4. I would check it out. it has an amazing keyboard. I own one myself. Lovin every minute of it.

only good phone with current specs and qwerty. recommended

Wow I saw the reviews and vids on youtube the droid 4 looks really neat and cool. Too bad its not released in Australia with no release date stated also. So it looks like a longgggggg wait for it. It would be expensive too since its new. I also found the HTC mytouch 4g slide and it has 1080p video and 8megapixel camera which is better than the Desire z but its double the price so Im not sure if its worth paying that much over the desire z.

ebay is ur friend for both

Yeh Ive tried ebay they arent bad but Im curious to know how much the Droid4 will cost once it is unlocked and how far away that is exactly. After seeing the reviews for the phone I am leaning towards wanting that phone but not knowing how long I have to wait it might be pointless and I should just get the Mytouch slide

Get the MyTouch 4G Slide
If I helped, please say thanks

I'd get the droid 4...desire Z is kinda dated now, plus the mytouch 4g slide is too bulky for me...if I had to choose between the Z or slide, I'd get the slide though.

[Q] how is it, Mytouch 4g owners? tell me please. :)

Hey guys!!!
I'm just wondering what you all think of the mytouch. I played with the g2, and I like it. I like the keyboard, and the screen looks better to me IMO.
However, with gingerbread proally coming out soon (PROBABLY) , that'll slow updates, for the MT right, because of mySense?
I LOVE THE MT4G. LOVELOVE.
I use facebook a lot
I text a lot
I like more customization
i'll probably root, overclock, and flash a custom rom when a lot of them become available.
mySense seems allright!
i consider myself an intermediate to advanced smartphone junky.
What phone should I get, and how do you like it?
I'm also worried that it's been a few months since the g2 came out, and its not even at the front at my TMO store anymore. I don't want to sign a contract and want another one before 3 months.
but the mt4g is! ideally, i wish they would add that g2 keyboard to the mytouch 4g and keep that z-hinge, it seems cool to me.
thanks!
so, should i get it? hows your experiences!? thanks.
its really important, i need a new phone before monday .
cmon guys please. 12 views, noone replies?
i just am deciding if i like mysense, and if its worth losing that amazing keyboard the g2 has. though the screen is only .1 inch bigger, the mytouch screen seems way bigger! i like it in my hand.
Well I have no experience with the MT4G yet as I am gonna get it today. My first decision was to get the G2 but after doing countless research (youtube reviews!) and comparisons of the two, I fell in love with the myTouch over the G2. The hard keyboard of the G2 doesn't really matter to me, the onscreen keyboard is good if not better with Swype. I prefer vanilla android over other UIs but mySense seems to have a lot of interesting tweaks and features that I might enjoy having. If we don't like it then there's rooting of course as I'm sure there will be plenty of roms available soon. The updates are the only thing that have me a bit worried but like I said, rooting the phone might ease the pain of dragging updates by flashing 2.3 roms if available.
Not sure if this might help but its worth noting i think.
Good luck on choosing your next phone!
I've had both the G2 & the MT4G and I'm a lot happier with the MT4G.
The G2 seemed too bricky for my tastes and I really didn't use the hard keyboard to compensate. MySense is not as good as full fledged sense but it's not a huge difference.
I know not too long after gingerbread comes out we'll probably have a Rom to flash it on our phones so updates don't worry me so much.
I think it really comes down to if you want a hard keyboard or a front facing camera. I chose the front facing camera & less bulkiness

maybe because this is the 15th "how do you like your mytouch" "is it better then the g2" thread.
people need to learn how to read before they start typing
I have had the G2 and now the MT4G and although the G2 is a very very good phone I must say that I believe the MT4G is the best all around phone I have ever owned, I also have a Vibrant and a Nexus One at this time but I am going to sell the Nexus One. All of these are Great phones IMO but the G2(hinge issues, connection issues, radio issues)and the Nexus One( touch screen issues at times, signal issues) and the Vibrant(virtually no GPS until just a short time ago, lags etc.signal issues) do not seem to compare with the all stability of the MT4G of which the only issue I have found was a slight glitch in MMS messaging which is now covered. All of this is obviously just my opinions but if I had to go with just 1 phone right now it would be the MT4G

BOO-YA.
I gave up my mint N1 for the MT4G. I know there aren't many ROM's for it yet, and God knows how long it will take to get Amon_RA, but it took a good month before there were ROM's to flash for the N1. With Android 2.3 so close to being released it's just a matter of time before we get a vanilla gingerbread ROM for this device.
The Mytouch is a great handset but after using it for a couple of days I'm not that impressed....I will be selling or trading mine soon...

I just got mine hours ago and am loving it. I got it because I've always wanted a Sense device, and the hardware is second to none (for now)...2nd gen Snapdragon and an outstanding 768MB RAM!

I'm with ya... Came over from an Evo and just can't get used to the hard keys at the bottom instead of the touch-keys. Also experiencing some automatic re-boots (3 in three days) and some text sending problems (I already turned of the Teklia). If the Evo had been a GSM phone, I would have brought it to TMO (sprint really sucks in this town). I'm looking for a GSM Evo-clone! My only other choice will be ATT in about a month when they come to town, but they don't have any decent androids yet (sorry, the samsung captivate just doesn't do it for me... the touch screen is terrible)

Nexus One owner who absolutely loves the My Touch 4G. Will always keep the N1 for the almost instant upgrades but the hardware on this My Touch is 2nd to none. This phone has it all and it all works. I'm getting use to this non vanilla Android for lack of a better word but using Launcher Pro this thing is dynamite. Best phone to date besides the Nexus One of course. Seriously the My Touch 4G is probably the best phone I have ever owned. The Nexus One will always be my go to phone, I'm just always drawned to that thing.
PS
The HSPA+ was just flipped on in my town. Live in a suburb outside Boston and getting between 3.5 to 5.5 Mbps on download and 1.5 on upload. I was usually getting around 900-950 kbps on the download. What a major diifference and these speeds are in my town and most surrounding towns. T-Mobile is killing this area with their great network. I am in freaken heaven. Thank You T-Mobile.
Those speeds are on my Nexus One. My Touch 4G is higher.
I had the EVO for almost a month (trial period). While I agree the bigger screen is great, it seems a little more washed out, maybe due to the fact that the same resolution is now scretched to accomedate a 4.3'' screen. The capacitive buttons on the bottom was a wash for me. I find myself accidently hitting them sometimes. I much prefer the physical keys. Battery life on the MT4G is much better. I could never manage to squeeze 10 hours from the EVO (moderate use). So, I chose the MT4G over the EVO. The only thing I did like about the EVO was the original SENSEUI on it, Tmobile's version is a little sloppy. Just my experience and opinion.
Your device is clearly defective, get a warranty exchange. That, or your lying.

LOVE the hardware, but don't like Sense. Waiting for CM6 to come out. You could always pick up a used Nexus or Vibrant for $300 or so. Or buy this one from T-mo for $450 ish without contract and then trade up later if you really want...

[Q] HTC Desire z or Iphone 4?? (Swap)

Hi , having been an avid HTC user a while back, rom changing etc, I got an iphone and have used that since. I once went back to a HTC touch pro 2 but didnt like it so ended up getting an Iphone 4 on release. Since then I still have a longing for HTC so am wondering whether to get another? I want to get away from the iphone to tinker with HTC again but cannot decide, what do you guys think?
I was looking at a desire Z because I want a physical keyboard so am hoping to swap for my Iphone 4.
My phone is in as new condition with box and accessories bought from Apple so is unlocked to all networks.
Let me know if interested, cheers. Stu.
Just looked at this lol
http://forum.iphone-developers.com/general-discussion/541-iphone-htc-desire-z-swap.html
I got a Z today, and I must say it's an amazing phone
Of course hTC Desire Z!!!
Stick with HTC
This should be self-explanatory, Desire Z FTW!
HTC Mogul (old)> iPhone (any model)
i had the same choice here in canada, went with the desire z and no regrets so far. though i briefly used swype on my friend's captivate and it was definitely impressive and with a larger screen thats nice... but no flash on the camera is a downer. iphone... meh
Isn't it pretty dumb to ask a question like that here at XDA? The people here will, of course, vote for the HTC. Looking for Android fanboys? Well, XDA is the place. You won't get a single objective answer here.
That's like asking the guys at Mercedes if you should get an Audi. The answer won't surprise you.
No no no, bazooka, I stated that I had HTC touch pro 2 previously and didnt like it. I just wanted a subjective view if things had improved since then.
Oh, i see
The answer is yes. HTC has improved since the Touch Pro 2. Check out some videos on YouTube or something, or take a HTC out for a spin. HTC and Android matches perfectly, and HTC has improved big time the last year(s).
I love my Desire Z (T-Mobile G2) that I just picked up, but they keyboard probably isn't for me. I think I would prefer an HTC Glacier (MyTouch 4G) instead.

Thanks Bazooka, I looked around and they do look better on video, so hopefully will get some interest for my iphone and go back to the good old days of rom flashing etc.
Was'nt too sure about the android OS , but seems to have come on a lot with the apps growing and growing.

Just something I am comfortable with .

Well, if they are planning on being AT&T in a year or so, with 1.2ghz dual core (htc sensation specs and evo 3d specs) being "rare" in like 3 months....
That gives like 9 months to announce a new phone. My guess is it will come 3 months after the Sensation 4G to allow that to be king. Then, an identical Sensation 4G with a different form factor, espresso, a keyboard, and the smaller screen will be announced as the MyTouch 4G Slide.
My guess is it will come around... October or November, which will be about a year after the MT4G was released, so that could mark its "end of marketing life".
I'm still hoping/doubtful this merger will go thru..

Really whats the big deal with a slide out keyboard? All it does is add weight, g2 weighs like 5 pounds haha the gingerbread keyboard is probably the best one ive used, swype got old.
Eh I have a mytouch 4g and a g2 the mytouch still feels heavier than the g2 so yeah.

This thread is hilarious in that almost all the stereotypes thrown out are in some degree true.
I loved my G1 and still miss it sometimes, but swype and thinness come over a physical keyboard. Once all those features get together we'll have a new "Superphone."

Yeah, for some reason keyboards can't be made thin enough currently. You'd think that would come down a bit more than it has over the years.
Also, I like how people say thinness is better because it fits in their pockets better, then later they complain about dropping their phone in the toilet and having to get a new one.
I'm not sure why people want to carry their phone in their pants pockets either. I've cut down on the **** in my pockets over the years (from 2 sets of keys to 1 and also to the world's thinnest wallet) and it feels absolutely wonderful having less in there. I'd rather wear mine on my belt or in a coat pocket.
Don't you guys think we should wait to see if AT&T will in fact be buying T-Mobile before buying new phones? I don't plan on getting a new phone until this blows over. If T-Mobile remains T-Mobile here in the US, I'll get a new phone.

They are pretty much releasing each phone with penta-band capabilities, meaning that they will work on AT&T's network anyway.
Plus, AT&T thinks that they will close the deal in a year. The FCC and US Congress think otherwise (and I support them).
And even if it's a year, by the time the networks are phased out, it will be time for a new phone.

So, who's getting a Sensation, and why?

I've had my G2 since the day it came out and its the best smartphone, and Android phone I've ever had. Despite the little quirks the G2 has that somewhat bother me,I love the look and the fact that the keyboard is amazing. BUT, I'm going to be making the switch to the Sensation when it comes out.
1) I've always wanted a large screen phone. I envy people with a Evo despite my phone will out perform it anyday. I feel like with a 4.3 inch ill be happy no matter what. Playing games will be better especially with the large screen, and the dual core of course will be great too. Eventhough the G2's keyboard is amazingly awesome, I know the larger screen will make up for not having one and ill finally be able to get really handy with Swype.
2) the hardware on the phone is amazing. The dual core is going to be amazingly fast and I feel the phone will gather a large dev community and the roms, kernels etc will be be vast. Not to mention Sense 3.0 is beautiful and will be great to use evenwhen other roms are available.
3) I work for best buy, so the discount will be enough for me to buy outright (or else I wouldn't buy haha).
What about you?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I'm not sure.. I just came from the G2x and was really in love with it minus the F'ed up screen. I'm thinking about holding out for a similar G2 with Dual Core or even Quad Core capability. This G2 is so nice after fixing the hinge. I'm very satisfied.
Coming from an N900 I've always thought I had to had a keyboard and but after using Swype, HTC IME and every other onscreen keyboard featured I end up using the onscreen 90% of the time anyway.
Now on to the reason I'm getting the Sensation.. my best bud and gadget rival got a Thunderbolt and the G2 looks puny compared to it! Haha.
I'm a big fan of 4.3" form factor after having my HD2. In fact at 10 months was the longest I ever owned a phone. I still consider it ergonomically the best phone I've ever used (for me). I've been waiting for something similar in Android form to come out to Tmo for quite a while. G2 was really a stop gap for me waiting for a 4.3" Tmo phone.
I'm tempted by the Sensation...
I find myself only using the desire Z keyboard for long emails, otherwise the onscreen keyboard does the job nice.
I already have a Bluetooth keyboard and as the Sensation supports the Bluetooth HID profile, i'm hoping that I would be able to use that with the Sensation.
The big screen is definitely appealing!
you have tot think its not only a 4.3 incher, but it has a qhd screen. for seem this seems like this could be as big as when the evo launcher. just because its the first phone with sense 3.0 and all of these yummy specs. and someone referring to having a phone with dual core, and a slide out keyboard i think youll probably be in luck. though its not the next g2, it is the mytouch 4g slide and it has alot of the goodies the sensation has plus a slide out. i can imagine a g3 will be in the works considering how fast phones are developing these days.
Wonder when we can expect the g3 if possible...i would probably pass on the sensation atm.
I am interested in it, but I will wait for a few weeks to get it because there are bound to be glitches and problems with it.
Locked bootloader = no dice
HTC was once a great but SE is looking the best for Android now. HW isn't much currently but hell, they give you the option to unlock the bootloader and even instructions to make your own kernel.

exactly. as soon as I see that they locked the bootloader, I just have nothing else to say... I wish they would continue doing what they did way back when and not worry about what rom we put on our phone. it's not like we're reverse engineering the phone to create a clone of the actual device and software to sell for profits.
This forum is only now starting to hit it's stride. It will be ages before the sensation forum can even come close to what our devs have done here. And for someone like me, that is just as important as the actual phone hardware itself.

Did anyone ever crack any of the motorola locked bootloaders? Last I heard no one ever did and genius's have been working on that for years with bounties worth 1000s. If this is anything like that its gonna be a dead end. Nothing but roms based on the stock with slight tweaks. Not interested.

We should wait and see what happens with the Incredible S.
i def know what youre saying with the sign bootloader. from what ive read, its not nearly as bad the moto bootloaders. i know there was an issue with the thunderbolt being locked..but whadda know! its unlocked, and roms are being flashed, etc. the g2 took quite some time before it was officially rooted. i have high hopes for the sensation being unlocked and from what ive read throughout websites that others do too. regardless of the bootloader ever being cracked, the phone is amazing with everything it offers and ill be getting it anyway. the new sense is going to be AMAZING, and itll hold me over until the phone is rooted.

That's the truth, depends on the preference. The phones are basically the same (1.2ghz processor, 786MB RAM, 8mp cam, front facing cam, etc). Sensation has a bigger screen resolution, so if you prefer that to the physical keyboard then yeah, go for it. Don't know how ROMs are on it but I'm sure you've done your research. I use my keyboard a fair amount. Hate that good sliders are a dying breed...

I switched from the MT4GS to the Sensation and I can tell you that it doesn't suck. The only limitation is the lack of keyboard, because otherwise the developer support is unparalleled. Anything you could want, you can get with this phone. True, the camera isn't as good as the slide, but it's serviceable. The screen is nicer and larger than the slide. Doesn't come with Swype natively though, you have to download it. But you'll enjoy the amount of ROMs they have that all function well. i literally have never experienced lag, but I was off of stock within minutes

Do you have a buyer in mind or gonna do ebay or something? My wife has the MT4G (non-slide version) and her fingernails don't do well on the soft KB

Reading your thread I think you bought wrong phone for yourself. Apparently you don't need keyboard at all.
Few days ago I was playing with Sensation. I don't know why some guys said it here, but the one I have played with did NOT feel laggy at all. I passed on it because I prefer actual keyboard.
It has same amount of RAM which is not too great but it also is not that bad, and it has same dual core CPU, almost everything else is similar except the screen and keyboard. It is a bit bigger than Slide but it still fits in a pocket and looks like phone (unlike some half-laptops/tablets that are in fashion nowadays, for which you'll need some servant to carry it for you if you happen to wear shorts lol)
IMO: yes, if you can sell your Slide higher than you'll pay for Sensation I'd say go for it - you get larger screen 4.x'' with higher resolution 1280x720 and you'll keep some cash. Go for it!
edit- my first choice was actually Samsung Glide (1GB RAM), but I passed on it because of 2 main reasons: everything made by Samsung I ever had always turned out unfortunately to be a huge P.o.S. (really, maybe I was unlucky one, but that's true in my case and I can long elaborate with details here) and second reason was that Glide has radios working only with Robbers in Canada, and I will NEVER become one of their customers ever again.

I never use the keyboard. And the Sensation is a great phone even left stock. My buddies brother has one and I must say its a solid little device. Go for it!

Yeah...now I am feeling a little torn...I have found the Galaxy s2 for 325 as well...but I am torn between Sense (Sensation) or the Galaxy s2....I told myself I would never own a crapsung but I hear a lot of good things about the s2......
you should try and sell your phone to a dev.

Id wait for the tmo GS3 if I were you anyway. Unless your in high need of a new phone. Careful not to get scammed.
Galaxy Note is a nice phone. Just get the N7000, I've used it 100% stock. Best experience ever, and the SCREEN IS AMAZING.

S-OFF or ON?
What color?
How beat up does it look?
Anything not working right on it?
Including the original packaging, sdcard, usb adaptor and cable...battery? Aftermarket any of these things? Any missing?
Anything else that should be known about the device?
----
If already S-OFF that could be attractive to someone who doesn't want to do the S-OFF method we have for current software devices.
Including all the original stuff will help you see the value you want.
I wouldn't flash any other software to it unless it's back to some stock form, and I wouldn't reverse it to S-ON if already OFF.
I've got to get my finances back in order again, but in a month or two i'll be looking to buy a third slide again. (Found a mint silver one - Yay! ... rather, one found me due to a kindness of a member here.)
I've been thinking about picking up a few sensations too, they play nice with the doubleshot and the coding is so similar it's not worth mentioning for most, so ...
...you will enjoy it if you get it, but i'd appreciate if you come back to this thread and do a comparison of the two devices, whatever else you get, after you've played with it for a little while to get a decent feel for it.
Best of luck to you in what you want to do - if you don't use the keyboard then the sensation is a better choice - essentially the same phone, and MHL is smoother then our RCA tv-out, if more cumbersome.
Hmm might have a Galaxy s2 for 280....if it is in good condition I don't think I could turn this down....
Yeah I think s-off is a good selling point..it is a challenge and not for the faint of heart...
