Beats vs Voodoo Sound? - Samsung Infuse 4G

In general, wouldn't Voodoo Sound tweaks result in better sound quality than the Beats Audio tweaks? ...considering that the Voodoo sound is specific to our hardware...

Completely different. Read around Page 6 of the Beats thread. "convo" between Dman and Dan.

I would much rather be able to customize the sound with voodoo control plus the actual changes voodoo makes is way more than just an equalizer overlay. IMO the Beats mod is great if you don't have voodoo. But ****, if you've got Supercurio's awesome work available to you, fkin use it!

Use Both!
Using them Both actualy. And the sound is awesome!!! but one thing i noticed is that after flashing the Beats Mod i have to slide the Dynamic Range slider to 20% and select Sub-Bass to get awesome results. With the Voodoo i get extreme bass and with the beats mod i get clearer sound. Definitively a great combo!!
One thing, if you dont like the sound, its better to have a Nandroid backup because the mod replaces and adds a lot of lib files that is hard to revert(at least for me)

My choice... disable voodoo... beats is better...

I've been pretty happy using the "Rock" EQ preset in the Galaxy Music Player + Voodoo sub-bass with 100% dynamic range. Sounds nice through my Ultrasone HFI-780 cans.
I'm guessing Beats would give similar results to this in other apps like Pandora. (?)

As discussed in the other thread, they can't really be compared that well, because they do different things. Voodoo tweaks the DAC (hardware) settings for optimal and clean sound output. It also allows you to use the hardware EQ for bass boost, and coupled with something like DSP Manager allows you to tweak the hardware EQ that can adjust sound without compressing, modifying it, or using CPU cycles to do the EQ work.
Beats is a software EQ that does a few tricks to make you think you perceive the music as sounding better. It uses CPU cycles and therefore battery power to apply the EQ, and software EQ will never have the quality that a hardware EQ has.
You very definitely could use both if you wanted to, though any audiophile would (aside from warning you a bout Beats) frown at having your audio modified multiple times before being output, especially through a software EQ, and really any EQ at all.
Now, that said, it really comes down to what sounds best to you. If you don't have a pair of headphones that can even handle high quality music, you probably wouldn't notice the difference that much if at all. Perhaps you don't care about pure clean sound quality and think Beats sounds better to you. Try them both out and see what sounds best to you. There's no better or worse when it comes down to opinion, but you will get cleaner sound with Voodoo and no Beats.

tried beats hated it got voodoo it kicks ass it gave me atleast twice the volume pair that with player pro with the dsp add on with a 10 band eq and ul rock

Voodoo it you won't be sorry.

Has anyone actually scientifically tested this particular MOD and verified it isn't simply placebo?
I am personally more inclined to trust Supercurio's opinion and take on this.

they are two completely different things. no reason not to run both.
voodoo is the driver for the headphone amp. and can increase recording and playback bitrates and allows you to set recording sensitivity and gives access to the analog volume setting so you havw more than 15 volume steps on the headphones.
beats is some libs that enhance the sound. it's either an equalizer or reverb type room emulation or something, I haven't tried it yet. it isn't nessesarily bad that its designed for another phone but id rather use it with cm7 if it works since Samsung has some of their own filtering and it would be best to not pervert the sound too many times...

Everything I've heard indicates that Beats on Samsung devices is nothing but placebo effect. Even if working, at best it's a ****ty audio EQ preset - just use another player that has an audio equalizer and tune it to your liking.
Voodoo Sound actually has driver optimizations to the DAC to improve jitter and SNR, among other things.
I basically avoid any firmware that has Beatsoff Audio included like the plague. It is a sign that the firmware developer is throwing random **** in that hasn't been tested.

I prefer voodoo because when I flash beats on my infuse, I can't hear the difference clearly. Voodoo is much better for me because I'm a basshead ^^
however when I flash beats on my friend's xperia x10, the sound is better (not as much as voodoo)

I'm biased on this topic as my ROM has Beats integrated into it and I've never used Voodoo sound.
But I say, to each their own Everyone will always have a difference in opinion and let's all just be thankful we actually have options instead of just one product to use!
Peace out with the grease out,

[Q] Sound quality through earphones

How good is the sound quality through a pair of decent earphones? I saw the RMAA tests GSMArena did and it showed excellent results. I currently have a Desire and the sound quality through my sony earphones is pretty mediocre. So is this a good deal better?
Put it this way, if you follow instructions here to install to Voodoo sound hack you will be very impressed. Using Etymotic ER4 earphones I find the sound quality is easily as good as my X-series Sony Walkman with far more volume as well.

Do you find your ER4 sound a bit "flat"? At least I have to apply a bit bass boost + some eq at the two lower frequencies with my ER4. Just curious though, would you recommend enabling the "Tune Speaker for Music" option? I've been testing different combination of settings (voodoo + CM7 dsp settings), so far I haven't settled on a setting I'm completely satisfied with.
can u please link me to that voodoo kernel? i saw two threads regarding it:

I don't find any need for eq at all - in fact eq degrades the sound quality - do you have ER4P's or ER4S as they have slightly different frequency response? I have P's which are more portable device friendly.
Tune speaker is for non earphone use - just try it and decide for yourself.

I have an ER4P. I find lows rather weak with my ER4P without any eq or boost. This is compared to a Rockbox powered MP3 player without any eq/boost at all. Can you please elaborate how eq degrades the sound quality, eg. distortion? I do notice easily audible noise when Bass Boost is set to moderate or extreme though. I guess I'll leave at least Tune Speaker option on for now, I think I started to prefer it on.

Aaah I see! Well I don't know how much difference custom ear molds make, this is something only you would have the experience. I've also tried my friend's UE Triple.Fi 10, its lows were a lot stronger even without eq, so eq would be unnecessary with his earphone.
Another explanation could be that we have completely different taste.

No matter what you're using I suggest comply foam tips, they made all the difference for the s4's. The tips they came with were weak.

Better Audio?

I know that this topic has been discussed before. I have tried the voodoo app and i have bought it. It just seems to make the sound even worse. I believe the culprit is dsp manager. So here Is what happens, I usually keep my volume 2-3 notches below the highest volume. I am using the acoustic preset on dsp manager with the bass slightly higher. If I go 2-3 notches above my normal volume, the sound gets really crackely and choppy. I tried the same song, but with the same preset but with even more bass on my sansa and it sounded crystal clear and really powerful even at higher volumes. Can someone suggest a fix. I am running HFP 2.1 and Faux's kernel.
Edit: I am also running beats audio from like march. And I'm using the google play music app

The first thing you need to do is remove the beats audio as it does nothing for the sound. Voodoo sound is much better as long as you have a kernel that has it built in. PowerAMP is one of the best equaliser apps out there for android but the overall sound quality coming from the G2x is not that good and will never be that good without better hardware.

I agree to disagree. Yes, get rid of beats. It didnt anything when I used it. Ditch google music its crap (intended for those of us who enjoy music? I think not.) I use PlayerPro (paid) with treble/bass booster preset with the bass knob almost all the way up. No matter how loud I make it, it kicks ass.
I'm also running RG2x MIUI with Faux kernel. Cleanest, smoothest, and all around best MIUI. Sorry Stormageddon. I used yours and my phone kept freezing. Not your fault, I know this. My phone just doesnt seem to like your roms. Or MIUI.us or Singh-MIUI's either for that matter. RG2x is the only one I can get to run with FC'ing a FC.
I use Winamp pro in conjunction with DSP manager and get GREAT sound (especially from FLAC ) I disable the EQ in DSP manager, Compression - Slight, Bass Boost - Slight, and depending on what I am listening to I will adjust Virtual Room. Everything else in DSP manager OFF. Then, in Winamp I use the Awesome 10 band EQ to adjust the sound to my liking.
I've been using winamp lately, but it still cannot drive my headphones as well as my sansa. Probably just the ****ty audio hardware from LG.

The actual hardware that is in the LG G2x is the same Wolfson DAC that is in the iPod touches and the iPhones. That DAC is really not that good especially for an audiophile. I never use my phone for music, and yes I only listen to FLAC or better and have a complete Sennheiser setup. I have tried making the audio better with an amp but even that just made the quality barely noticeably better. The quality is not that good and will never be that good.

Beats, EQ, DSPManager - What is best?

Hello to all, I was just wonder what sound enhancer people are using these days? I come from an Android device with DSPManager on it which would give extremely rich bass. Beats audio, although enhances my sound somewhat, is no comparison. I tried installing other EQ apps but they have no effect on my device. I think maybe the Beats engine is conflicting with other EQ plugins.
If anyone could share what they use or how they got it to work I would much appreciate it I'm thinking about rooting my device and uninstalling Beats with Titanium just to test it out. Thanks guys!
I'm pretty sure I saw another thread about this. As you may already know, Beats is just a bass heavy EQ setting.
I don't know why certain DSP programs don't seem to have any effect on this phone. The only consensus I've seen if that apps like PowerAmp work the best for actually tweaking the EQ.
IDK why lots of people diss on Beats Audio on their phone. I've tried most of these eq apps and Beats gives me the best sounding music through my ear buds than any other. JMHO

I've been using Poweramp for a couple years and I love it. The options and the equalizer are outstanding. I was just comparing it with Beats and there is no comparison in my opinion. I am not sure what Beats does. A t-mobile sales guy told me it decompresses the sound file. Whatever it is I am not impressed and it seems like marketing hype to me. I would prefer to remove it. I just signed with t-mobile and I am checking out the service and the phone so I am not ready to root or flash. I have not even seen a way to disable beats.
It's easy to disable. Plug in a headset, go to Sound and there you have an option for Beats. On German One S it's name is: Klangverbesserung. I don't know the english name.

beats is the most powerful tool to optimize the music.. works with my gaming Headset and Bose in Ear.. Top Sound..
I just traded a watch for some beats headphones (studios) and realized the integrated beats thingy has no affect one beats headphones. If you shut it off the headphones automatically adjust back to "beats" performance. Idk what this concludes but thought I would share.

From my experience, Beats boosts both treble and bass, thus making it sound richer. It is disabled by going to Settings>Sound>Sound Enhancer. Just click 'no enhancements'. Headphone must be plugged in to do so. I leave it enabled in combination with PowerAmp for pretty good quality. Still not as good without DSPManager :'(
Started to use Poweramp before DSP was invented The EQ is doing a good job and for the most time i like the sound of it. In the first days of DSP I uninstalled it because it drained to much battery.
Beats is also nice, but i don't like that it turns on for every sound the phone does.
So i am finaly back to deinstalled DSP & Beats and using Poweramp only =)

Holy fooking crap, now I remember why I miss my infuse. It is almost perfect with voodoo sounds. Issue? Almost none minus a little lag.

Do you still have the infuse? Or are you porting blind?

Doing some reading on the HOX forums; I take it this isn't hardware dependent like Voodoo Sound is correct? I've read around about the Bravia XLOUD engine being moved around but not enough comparisons.
I have it. I'm listening to it right now and it makes me want to switch phones. LOL It's up.

It basically driver-libs driven mod. The audio fx widget enables the massive boost in audio output when turned on. There is a flat eq which just boost audio output like no other. It's a mixture between hardware/software mod.

mmm...running on Yuma75s AOKP Build 40 ROM using only headphones (Brainwavz M4 IEMs)
-On EQ 1: I can definitely tell there's a cleaner output in vocals and the higher frequencies.
-Beats Audio Bass definitely is noticeable and does sound nice: nicer than the Sys apk "Awesome Beats" equalizer variant of Beats Bass.
-I added the two lines to the build.prop and noticed cleaner output from my lower-bit files.
-I didn't notice an overall audio output from the music though the same way Voodoo Control's Headphone Amp does it though.
-Mixing both Voodoo and this mod together with the right equalizer setting is pretty heavenly.
I hope this one fixes problem that I have with my Three way earbuds that has lower volume than four way earbuds.

Yeah this plus voodoo just makes it almost perfect. This uses filters and library based on the phone. I advise to not use auto volume. Set gain to 5 then get it rip.

Sorry if this is completely obvious, what do the various settings in Audio fx do? Dialog mode doesn't bring up a dialog that I can find and I'm not sure what I'm toggling with Toggle mode. And 'restore defaults' restores the phone to it's default settings, is that right? I'm a little unsure about how well the flash went because in the post you link to in the OP, there are controls, but I can't find any on my phone... unless I should be using the DSP Manager?

Pull it up as a widget. Settings in the apps section affect how it will work and appear as a widget. Once you see the widget..it will make more sense to you.
this MAY be obvious to others, but just want to clarify. I have been known to be kind of a dullard.
i am running Cypher ROM, do we just flash this on top of the Rom, like GAPP's ?
i know your title suggests what this will work with, as always, i just want to be 100% sure.
if this is what i hope it is, this and YOU are my savior. everything in this new flood of development is great with ICS & JB. my only personal issue has been sound of music.
NOT THE MOVIE.
it has been a little lacking compared to GB. i am not complaining, every other part of development lately has been ORGASMIC.
wondering if this is my answer ???

Ah ha! Maybe I was too tired, I didn't see the widget last night so I assumed the Audio fx dialogue was the widget. Found the widget, now all is clear! Thanks!
neat! "music effects" under settings->sounds works now
I can now pick "MusicFX" and instead of FCing it just takes the setting rocks the head phones now

Yes, this is the answer. You flash it like any mods. Reboot into recovery. Wipe both caches then flash the mod.

Best Audio Improvement App/Tweak

Hey, was wondering if there's a patch, tweak our app that'll improve the audio output on my phone. I'd enjoy something that'll allow you to do some eq setting changes.
Thanks

Are you on a custom rom? If not then yes there is but doing some simple searching will get you the information you need.
Ill give you a hint search for voodoo sound.
voodoo sound definitely helps.. as far as audio apps, the best one I've found is poweramp. you can try it for like 15 days free, but after that you need to pay $2.50
it seems to have the best eq and audio processing to me (without skipping).. and if you disable auto-resume when you plug in your headphones, it was the only app that actually closes it's processes (after about a minute) when you stop the music and exit. All the other apps I tried remained running in the background.
+1 for mike-y's suggestions. I've been hanging out on gingerbread for the past few weeks and I definitely missed an always-working voodoo sound. As far as poweramp goes you can try the eq settings (since as mike-y said) they won't cause too much cpu overhead, which will not cause skips.
I don't like messing with the eq in poweramp, I try to do everything in voodoo sound. All I have turned on though is bass boost to medium and it makes most of my music sound good (pink floyd, rock, metal). .

Good advice... The sound quality on GB with fully functioning voodoo sound is unbeatable.
