[Q] Developers, Where did you start? - General Questions and Answers

Right, so XDA is all about Taking from the Community AND giving back..
I've taken with thanks to the talented Dev's on here, and i'd like to at some point give back, but i look at Android Development, java language and the un-comprehendable Jargon and i think, this is impossible.
My question to you dev's out there, how did you start? Had you already any experience? How long did it take you to build up to where you are now?
Any other information that would help me out would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.

Moderator / administrators / volunteers

XDA Developers
Given the size and nature of this forum now, I was wondering who out there is willing to be a volunteer to administer this forum.
I dont know whats involved, I dont know how much time it takes, but I do know its a thankless job, with zero money, and nobody is asking for help that I can see, but I am suggesting that this topic be used to document who is willing to volunteer and assist.
Perhaps the moderators can them come along and pick some volunteers at their choosing.
So anybody? somebody? everybody? nobody?
To the moderators.... if you are listening, whoever you may be, I am willing to try and help.
I would be willing to volunteer
I am on the forum a lot, so i would be happy to give back to the community by helping out.
To those who are listening up there, I'm in the boat if needed
I'm happy to help out if I can. I spend too much time on this board anyway

Count me in too...I will be obliged
Since I have an explorer open on this site whenever I work on a computer (which is all day) I probably should have said it sooner:
Count me in too!
hi...
..as we (moderators) listen (sometimes) to what is happening in these forums, we are trying to do our best to clean the forum and ftp.
however, time is very limiting factor. so I would say, that the site might need more of fresh power ;o))) but it's only up to admins and owners of this site, who they gonna choose as for moderators.
thanx for offering your help. lets hope, that admins are listening as well...

I'd like to volunteer too...I spend quite some time at the Blue Angel sections (BA, BA Upgrading mostly).
Thanks for the offers and yes they have been seen.
Here is our problem most of you are BA owners and most of the mods are also BA owners.
What we need are poeple to look after the newer sections and people to write wiki pages of the newer sections to stop all the same posts.
Also some of the mods are nolonger as active as they have moved on or things have changed or what ever, its normal.
So we need to work out of the old ones who are still around and of the new ones which sections do they cover.
Mostv of you who have posted here have recived PMs from me.
Mean while the Mods are having there own talk in the Modorator section.
Simon who started this thread also posted to a different thread which resulted in this:

How Do I Get Wm 6.1?

Is WM 6.1 an official release or a cooked ROM? Either way, how do I get it?
6.1 are released, but our cooks have tweaked and added their own flavors. There are many on the forum
To get it, you download a rom for the Kaiser and you flash it.
But before doing that, I suggest you alot of reading. Not hours, but many here have read for days.
Just check at list first 2 Sticky on first page before asking .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378
I dont't want to be bed guy but it could happend that one not verry skilled member to answer to your question with a link to a WM 6.1 and if you just flash it you could brick your phone without HardSPL.

No, it is not. But XDA is not my entire life. I was actually very up to date with the upgrading over winter, when I could go on reading without other obligations. I admit I am not current with what is going on, but I understand flashing ROMs and Radios and have done so many times. However, being back in school, I have to prioritize. Being a respected (I have seen your good contributions elsewhere on the forum) senior member like yourself, I wonder why you continue to bash on newbies or people who ask questions that are trivial to you. The XDA community, in my opinion, is so popular because of its helpful members and the opportunity for anyone to learn.
So what if there are repeat questions. Didn't you ever learn that if you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything at all? It would be better for you to not reply and just move on vs bashing every newbie you can. And anyways, dont you have more productive things to do (aka a life outside of XDA)?

I agree with alltheway. Read, and search for answers. I typed your original question in Google and got 499,000 hits! I put two different variances of it in the forum search and got pages of threads. Don't make excuses about having a "life" and not using the fundamental tools at your disposal, cause we all have lives outside of the forum too. If you think every post should be positive then move to Utopia and ask n00bish questions there. The forum is here to help, but it's cluttered with ridiculous threads because everyone expects to be spoon fed information that's easily at their own disposal.

LOL. This makes me laugh.
Actually I do have a quite productive life outside of XDA. I don't know if you noticed the things at the top of the page that say stickies. Yeah those are meant there to be read first. The problem with this forum now is that nobody will take the time to do a little research. They want everything spoon feed to them. I understand you don't have much time being a student, believe me I was there once, but doing a search for about 10 minutes wouldn't hurt you. You could have easily found the result you were looking for by simply going to Google Advanced search and I guarantee this would have taken less than 10 minutes.
You say that you are familiar with flashing and radio's. Well you would have known this answer right from the start if you were even a little bit familiar with this process. How do I get WM6.1...Hmmm maybe look at the sticky that says WM6.1 ROM Links !!! Updated Daily!!!.
Austinsnyc has donated a lot of his time to publish this and keep it up to date so the forum in not inundated with ridiculous questions such as these.
Obviously a little more education wouldn't hurt you. READ and COMPREHEND!
...and since you are reading this I recommend that you check the 1st link in my signature...It's there just for the likes of you.

Sounds like someone is mad, when the guys are just trying to tell you to read, their just trying to save you some money for your Kaiser. I must say I often pay XDA a visit at least for 5 minutes every hour. Somehow, other members and myself can balance our life. I run my own company, the social life, and XDA very easily.
If you think you need to prioritize in while in school, I suggest a sidekick. I heard T-Mobile has a very nice sidekick that can direct link to myspace now.

Dude, read the stickies, they're there for a reason or do a simple search...If people started a new thread everytime they had a simple question, we would miss out on a lot of good info and good people on the forum.
Posting For Idiots. & Reading For Idiots.
Both very good books I hear.

I agree, it is here to help people, you are right. However, that being said, lately this forum has become inundated with an extremely large amount of people, no0b's and seniors alike, who dont feel the need to do a search or even read through the existing threads and stikies before they post. Most, as of late, even start a new thread. When is enough enough? I do answer as many questions as my time allows me for people needing answers that I don't remember seeing before or questions that have a tough answer to follow. But my God, the whole front page is covered with 6.1 roms, cooked and raw.

[Q] Where to start?

Hi im new in this forum, and have been reading alot in the last couple of days and am really impressed how strong the community is here!
In my job i had to programm microprossesors alot (in C and Assembler) and i really liked it and now i wanted to start with programming for android. But i have no ideea where to start because the knowledge here is really high... That is the reason why i have some questions
Wich thread's should i read first? (are the programms needed in that thread?)
Is there a thread where shortcuts are explained?
Or in general with what should i start?
I'm using a HTC desire HD if that makes a diffrenz.
thx for the help and sry for my english havent used it in a while
Your English is better than mine and i'm a native
The only advice i can give right now is to get your post count up so that you're able to post in the Dev sections of the forum!
Welcome aboard.
Hello and welcome to the forums
I myself am also starting to learn programming for Android and here are some good websites to get started.
http://developer.android.com/index.html
http://androidforums.com/application-development/
http://www.anddev.org/
http://www.codinggreenrobots.com/
I would also like to know if there are some books people recommend when getting started for a more structural learning and explaining things in the process.
First thanks for the quick replays.

thx for the links (i cant quote them not enough posts ), so should i go to those websitets to start? Are they more basic information than on this site or is it more to support the information that is on this board?
you need 10 posts to be allowed to post in the dev sec ^^

I hope this is right section I am interested in learning to dev roms

If anyone could help me with where i can get started in deving for epic i would appreciate it I have some background knowledge in going to school for IT major with JAVA programming some in web design html css xhtml dont know if any of this helps or not but I am very quick and an easy learner if anyone can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it.
This is the wrong section for this type of question.
But, read this. Good reading material and it will point you in the right direction.
thanks and sorry
thank you for the link my bad about the wrong sections wasnt sure were it would go if it was a general this is the android development section so i just figured this would be the right place lol.

Not trying to bump this... but oh well, lol
although the question should be in general, I vote that the link in the second post be stickied. there are a lot of people (myself included) who would like to start learning how to dev, and to be honest, I didn't even know there was a chef section on XDA (I'm fairly new here, don't kill me, lol).
so I think a perminant link to the list of dev-teaching tools in that post would be a great addition to any dev forum
just my thoughts

Google has pulled the pdk information as it was "misleading" Since that information seemed vital, some more one-on-one help would still be nice. I'm at the beginning of a week off and wanted to dabble as well. I don't have actual programming background, but I figure ways to make things work (hulu on GB ftw!)

End of custom roms.......

Sorry guys.... As another dev shuts up shop due to users/noobs that don't read opening posts or explain the bugs they having.
Custom roms will soon be a thing of the pass.
I for one knows how much time/effort goes into making a rom. It's no easy task. The amount of flashing/bricking to bring roms to us.
All the roms on xda are free but if this continues then devs may start charging for their roms (maybe not on xda but who knows) Wouldn't blame them really though.
All users need to understand if we don't have devs on Android. Then basically we will end up like iPhone users that are locked down. We should be grateful for all devs that brings us root without it then no custom roms would exist.
Do the Android community wanna end up like iPhone? I doubt it very much.
Respect the devs
Read the first post, search the thread! All answers are there. This excuse "I searched but couldn't find anything" is BS basically.
We will lose them all eventually.
Rant over.

Post of the month!
ETA:
As much as I agree, this is flogging a dead horse
Until you can change the impatient 'fix it now, I refuse to read the first post post anyway, that bits not important' mentality of the average user, nothing will change
I agree. most users in this community are selfish. most likely they demand fix this please, when's the next update, port it please, comparing their work to another's hard work, flaming and so on.
they neither try to read back the thread or use the search function. or has no clue with the forum rules. it's a sad thing but yeah it's here. it's really a sad thing but there's nothing we can do unless they learn to respect the free work devs have put into their work. people should realize devs are doing it on their spare time on their own will to share to people for users to enjoy for free.
Agree
I was hoping to find a thread like this and I totally agree with you.
But maybe that is not the end cause I think that the devs will still love what they do just that they try not to address certain people.
As great as the idea of XDA is and as much as I'm happy that this awesome forum exists..I think that it should be talked/discussed about the forum rules!!!
Example:
How can it be possible that you become senior member with 100 posts?
This leads to flaming in some cases and is no way near related on how helpful you are
The process in being allowed to post
While some are annoyed that they can't discuss right after logging the first time....for others it is way to simple to join and flame.
Rules enforcement
We all know that some posts we make are not related to the devices...and I think that this shouldn't be seen as an issue in general...XDA to me is also a communication page as long as the dev doesn't have a problem with it... BUT being disrespectful to the work you receive for free and claiming bugs where there are reported to be none and most important refusing to read should be looked after more often.
At last I really don't want to criticize XDA or what it stands for cause I still love it... I just hope it stays what it was created for and won't loose the devs which are doing so many awesome things for us because some people just can't follow the rules and be thankful for what they get
Maybe some new rules when people sign up?like private reference or something?but then again that would drop Ads revenue of this site drasticly
Unfortunately it's fact that most of the users are never happy enough with the things they get FOR FREE. They don't see the hard work of the devs behind a custom ROM. They only see what they have on their phones, and if there's something they don't like, they complain and blame the dev. And the fact that many users don't read instructions or simple informations gives the devs more work. They have to watch their thread 24 hours a day and always be friendly and helpful. If that's not given, some users become rude. My favorite thread was closed this morning because of such stupidity. The dev pulls his heart and soul in his project and gets more negative than positive feedback. That's not fair.
@4aces: you know what thread I'm talking about, i think you agree, it's a sad sad day for us.
Exactly @speedwayfan75 that why I had to voice my rant over that thread. And @DSA same for your thread too shut due to some users. Black box was great used on s3 then got discontinued on s4

In my opinion it's also the fault of XDA in general.
Just take a look in the Q&A section. So many question that have been anwsered before, so many people that just won't read.
In my opinion every thread that doesn't have a decent opening post should be closed untill they put some effort in it. But the more users XDA gets, the more money they make. So the skill level will only keep lowering and then some other decent website opens and replaces XDA.
Users just get to much space to do anything they want. I'm not blaming the mods in any way, because I think they are doing a good job. People higher up the ladder should take action or XDA will go down true their own succes.
I agree that there are many noob who do not read the post before replying.
But every boby was a noob before no?
just give them a chance to become good Android users...
PS: sorry for my english, i'am french !
You can't stop anyone from posting questions without searching first, or asking for OTAs. The only thing the devs can do is to ignore these people.

Its not as simple as that
If I create a development thread and include all relevant info in the first post, which is then populated with nothing but questions that are answered in the first post it makes it incredibly hard to find any proper posts which could contribute to the rom or for me to help a genuine user having issues
I created a specific q&a thread for these types of posts and everyone ignored it and filled up my dev thread instead
XDA has a chronic problem with users atm, I can't explain it or understand it, but I'm seeing more and more devs close their threads because of the users populating it
Have a read of the gravitybox thread in the xposed section...its unbelievable..
ETA: just had a read of the echorom thread...check @friedrich420 last posts in there..I feel for him as I know exactly how he feels
Users should be understanding about this. I think XDA should double the number of moderators so that useless posts are deleted on regular basis. For developers; they should create a third post on their ROM topic, that has a big list of all FAQs in bold.

I agree. I'm not sure if Devs will start charging, to be honest I'd probably pay, But anyways.... I work in Service Management for a Global IT company, and this behaviour is pretty standard when you are dealing with this many users..
I for one respond ONCE and the ignore users that make demands or unreasonable requests or are just plain offensive or rude.
What makes it worse though is the number of more experienced users that actually reply to these people in the thread. Honestly is some threads they have doubled the useless post count! Now, before I get flamed, I have done it myself because its just plain RUDE!!! But it doesn't take every 'good' user to flame back or stick up for the dev or say not to ask for ETAs! Just once will do and then ignore them!
If you ask any service professional or SixSigma bod, they will say 'focus on the good users and ignore the bad'.
Please please though reading multiple posts from good users responding to bad users is just as annoying as having to read the original bad post.
Peace Out People!

I thank you from the bottom of my heart!! I know if anyone can understand is you my man!! I create a basic custom rom at best (and kernels lately). You create the most awesome rom i have ever used!! Way way over my head!! And you get the same treatment?? Its really not worth it!! People (im not generalizing because there are some EXCEPTIONAL USERS who deserve recognition) dont get (or dont want to get) what it takes to create a masterpiece like yours for example...
Thank you and my wish is that we will see you back!!
But one thing is for sure, something has to change...
It seems that people value something only if they have to pay for it... Im not say this should happen here but something that protects us (the creators/ providers of roms. kernels, recoveries, mods, apps etc etc) for the **** we get should be put in place... Some kind of mechanism that protects spamming and protects flaming... Something with more success than the current measures we have in place now...
Also THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT and opening this thread is a good thing!!
It needs to stay up and we need to make it into a "brainstorming pool" of ways to make sure devs who do this for free (therefore they do it because they love sharing) are protected...
How to stop stupid questions?
Firstly if devs want to be paid then good for them. Whatever they get it wont be enough. This might leave some users feeling empowered though - they would feel they were owed answers as they had paid "where is my promised bug fix you lazy asshole!". And we don't want that. So how about a testers thread for each ROM were the dev controls who can post and a general thread for each ROM were you have to pay to post ($0.20). It would encourage only real questions after peole have searched.

Rant over.
