Hey guys, I need a big time favor.
My girl's gTab was stolen
was due to my idiotic negligence, but **** happens right, I'm an optimistic sort of guy, so **** it, I've still got my Galaxy Note and some Jack Daniels
Now the favor.
I had the good sense to do a CWM backup of my girl's gtab ROM that I flashed. Obviously I'm the Mod junkie in this relationship, after all, I owned an HD2 and flashed every ROM from here to Russia
so I still have the CWM backup files but not the gTab. I want to get the data off teh cwm backup to restore to my Note.
So the favor I need is for one of you to download the CWM backup I uploaded, restore it on your gTab, download My Backup Root, then do a full backup, then upload it and send me the link. I really want to surprise her with al the restores of her "Bakery Store"and "Restaurant Story" and all the other apps she had on the gtab. I am entrusting one of you to the personal data, so please just back up the data and restore YOUR rom
If anyone is up for this, please let me know is this thread of via PM, and I will link you to the CWM file. hopefully someone is feeling generous.
thx guys.
Anyone willing to help me out with this at all?
sigh... bump
I guess I can try it since I'm about to install ice cream anyway which will blow my current os away. My boot loader is still 1.1 if that matters any. I still need to figure out how to upgrade it to 1.2 soon.

I have built a Froyo ROM from source. I got the Captivate vendor files from Krylon360 over at Cyanogen, updated them, and built a ROM. I was able to get the leaked Froyo Captivate system.img and extract it so I could get the files required for our device. The ROM build cleanly and I was able to restore it to my device but since I have an Eclair kernel it will not boot. I actually read later in a forum that an Eclair kernel won't boot a Froyo system.
Anyway, I am looking for anyone who has a Captivate with the leaked Froyo build installed to try and restore my ROM. It will not brick your phone, I promise. I took a Nandroid backup before restoring and when I saw why it wasn't booting in logcat I booted into recovery and restored my last backup.
I just want to see if this guy will boot properly with a Froyo kernel and also see if I have all the device drivers working, etc.
Thanks!
Why would you go to all the trouble to build a Froyo ROM and then not flash Froyo to your phone and try it yourself?
You flashed it your phone with the 2.1 kernel, so why not install the leaked 2.2 and then flash your custom ROM.
Seems odd you are asking others to try what you will not.
Umm Odin is required to flash the leaked Froyo.
Odin requires Windows.
I am not and never have been a Windows user. I have no way to flash the leaked Froyo to my Captivate, otherwise I would.
Does that answer your question?
It does!
Thanks.
I've been busting my butt to create a stock ROM so that we Captivate users can get rid of AT&T's stupid add-ons. Everyone jumps up and down saying, when will Cyanogen come to the phone.. I actually started working on it... and spending more time than I should.. And I think I have something that will work.
I just need people to help me validate it. And remember, I did try flashing my phone with it so there is no unwillingness on my end.
you're better off with responses with this in the dev section of the forum.. and just post the link for everyone with a big RED SIGN WARNING SAYING DEVS ONLY.
I guess I'll give it a shot. Send me a PM or a link to your files and I'll try it out. I've bricked, unbricked, rebricked, and unbricked again, so I'm pretty confident in my skills lol.
Let me set it up on dropbox real fast. I will put the URL here soon.
Sounds good.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6995251/full_captivate.tgz
You should only need system.img. So basically, edit nandroid.md5 and strip out the checksums for the other two files. Then copy nandroid.md5 and system.img to your recovery directory. Mine is /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup.
Report back what you find.
great work gdanke, and looking forward to what vunut has to report back with. i'd vol myself but i've only flashed my phone twice and still feeling pretty awkward with it lol.

Sorry i cant work on this anymore because i lost defy. Sorry guys
Hello guys,
first of all, i am no where near a developers level, but being somehow geeky at linux and android stuff, i am trying to port MiUi ROM for motorola milestone to motorola defy. I havent succeeded till now, but i will try my best to bring MiUi goodness to Defy phone users. I worked all night last night, trying to do different stuff every time hoping it works, but everytime i do anything, all i get is the big a$$ motorola logo. I need some developer's help on doing this.
The main problem has been motorola's locked bootloader, which does not let me flash updated zip files, unless i flash the original sbf, log into motoblur, root it, install recovery, boot into recovery and finally install. And trust me, i did all of that like 10-15 times last night. Even my phone must be pissed off at me right now cuz of that If there is an easier way, please, please please let me know.
I have tried everything from replacing apps, extracting boot.img, replacing framework files, installing directly, using kitchen for htc to automatically replace and almost eveything i could think of, and still no success. I really need help from someone who can debug kernels and sneak into bytecodes.
You are really welcome to help me if you think that you could help in any ways. Please shoot me an email at zed [at] wireshock.com (i will usually reply asap), or add me in gtalk admin [at] wireshock.com so that we can talk about it. Lets all hope that we can see miui in defy some day. Wish me luck
Edit: Here is the final thing i came up with, if anyone wants to examine, here is the link -> Click Here
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WILL NOT WORK! IT WILL NOT BOOT! THIS IS FOR DEV'S ONLY!

Update (9:40 AM): Another night without success. I am trying my best to make it work. Few people have contacted me about this, and some have helped a lot. Thanks to them. I contacted eugene_373 about this, lets hope he replies fast.
Update (11:48 AM): @KSubediTweet My Defy no longer works... So, not much help I can give. <- Eugene's defy doesnt work, need some devs who work for defy.
Update (5:54 PM): Me and Landroid from xda worked for almost the whole day trying to make it work. No success till now, but i think we are closer than before. If anyone finds a way to run recovery without booting somehow, please let me know, that will help a lot. And be sure to say thanks to Landroid for helping me out a lot.

Update (10:53 AM): Spent the last week trying to figure out a way to run recovery without booting which would help me save 80% time. Need some more Dev's help. I have tried contacting some chinese miui developers so that they could help me on porting the rom. Waiting for reply.

Thanks, ill try my best.
Eugene made some adaptations on system recovery to apply update.zip. I don't know exactly how that works but maybe help you.
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995131
Thanks a lot for the link, if i can get the keyfile, i think i can make an update.zip for the recovery and can open clockworkmod from default recovery. Ill try it
Edit: or i can sign the zip file so that i can flash it from default recovery.
Dexter_nbl did the port of sense for us. In his rom he used a file on sdcard to boot on recovery. Like, if the file called recovery_mode exist on sdcard execute the script to boot up on recovery....this helped a lot!

That might have worked if the room booted at all, the problem here seems to be with some hardware driver that is preventing the phone from booting. Only if someone who knows what is preventing it from booting could help me out, i would work on fixing it somehow.
good to see a new project coming up.
got a bit quiet here in the past week, devs probably waiting for motos official froyo release.
anyways, kepp us updated on your progress and good luck!

That ideia is for you access your system recovery to restore your system without flash a sbf, get root, install system recovery (that take a long time). This way you can try more things. Dexter call the script to verify the file on sdcard in beginning of the process of boot, i dont know how but if you want see take a look the first version of his ROM.
i dont think you can sign the update packages. maybe you should try to ask eugene how this whole cookie cutter thing works

would be awesome to get miui on defy...

I have contacted miui developers to help me out. Waiting for reply now. Lets hope that we can bring miui to defy as soon as possible. Need help from some devs.
What do you mean go to recovery without booting? Without booting to Android you cannot use any other means to write to the Filesystem, so how would you do that? You can't replace the recovery that's installed with the phone, so I don't really see how that would be possible.
Recovery without booting is possible through charge-only-mode, but no one is capable to do it for Defy. And probably it is possible in Defy Sense ROM, if you read the thread. But I did not tried.
an option would be to look for an exploit in the recovery, that allows us to make something like open recovery on the milestone... i would ask the devs from openrecovery
There is the way using the second boot used on milestone (2nd-init) and the way used by Dexter in Sense ROM;
- included ClockWorkRecovery custom edition for this rom
• - Do NOT install the apk release, or it will ruin bootup of sense.
• - activate Recovery by putting an empty file in the root of your sdcard called "recovery_mode"
• content can be anything or empty, just make sure filename is correct.
• - reboot, and it will load into recovery.

Hello!
I recently sold an android phone to buy my HTC sensation. Now, I cleaned off my phone to a bare cm7 installation, booted it up once to make sure it was working, and shipped it to the buyer.
The buyer then contactedme to say that the phone won't go past booting screen. Shesaid tthat herattempts to flash a rom have-not worked. She has requested I email her my backups to see if the phone will work again.
Does this scenario make sense? Is there any way that my rom backup wouldn't actually be the solution? How much of a risk is it if I share it with her? (Personal info etc)
I was thinking I should offer to pay shipping and fix it myself, then send it back.
What do you all think?
Sorry for random post, but I would really appreciate the advice.

Sounds like she doesn't know how to flash a rom. Send her a guide how to properly flash a rom.
Not good idea. I agree, send her instructions on how to install a ROM it shouldn't be hard.

Editing the backup
Hello,
Your could take the clockworkmod backup folder,
1. Copy your backup folder to your desktop
2. Remove all but the system.img, boot.img, and md5 file
3. Edit the md5 file by removing the unneeded lines(leaving only system and boot)
4. Send them that. When they restore it will restore the system and boot only, no personal info.
This is all at your own descression though, just do whatever you are comfortable doing. The cache.img, data.img, and android_secure.img all have personal information in them so keep that in mind for the future.
Rsotbiemrptson
i say fix it yourself so that no information of yours is out in the wild
Thank you all for your replies I think I will do as rsot suggested and remove all of those files.
Short of not sending them, does anyone else have a suggestion to maintain privacy?

If you flash a rom and don't set anything up why would any of your personal info even be in there? That's what I would do. Talk to her on the phone and guide her through a flashing.

Oh wait...you don't have the phone anymore. Look around on the phones forum and see if someone has posted a bare nandroid backup.
Well I've thought a little bit more about this and I have one real question remaining:
What advantage, if anything, does giving her a nandroid backup (or any backup) have over her flashing the ROM? Is it easier to do successfully? Why would it succeed when her attempt at flashing a ROM didn't?
Also, I am googling, but if anyone knows where to find a bare nandroid backup, pleeeeease link me.
Thanks again everyone.
Why would you want to spend so much time on editing a nandroid backup.
It's much saver to give her a link to cm7 and a proper guide on how to flash the rom
Well, I don't want to give her a ROM backup of mine (not even edited). She claims to have knowledge of how to do CM7 and other ROM flashings properly, but that it is not working.
She is the one that requested the ROM backup (which is fishy to me in the first place). I have a suspicion that the intention is to get my personal info (and that was the goal from the start) which is why I hesitated at her request and decided to ask this forum about it.
The only way it would make sense to send one to her is if it was more likely to work or easier than CM7 flashing and safe for me. But I don't see how it could be easier or more likely to work. Plus, I checked to make sure the phone worked before I sent it, so it either bricked on the way or this is an elaborate phishing scam. (imho)
Gah, just don't want to have to deal with it.
Just curious... what phone did you sell her that had CM7 on it, and why are you posting it in the Sensation forum... just because you now own a Sensation? LOL
Anyways.... What phone is it? Give her an xda url on how to revert to original ROM or something, and yeah, she screwed up herself, don't send her any of your nandroid backups of that old phone, just say you didn't backup your nandroid for it since you no longer have the phone.
And if she can't figure it out still, have her mail it back to you, and go ahead and just revert it back to stock and mail it back (all at her expense).

To be honest I did post it here because this is the forum I spend the most time in. i figure the loophole is that this applies to any such scenario (It doesn't really apply any more to the Vision forums, because this is an issue about Backup ROMs) Theoretically, I could have the same issue if I had sold my Sensation or any other phone.
Anyway, thanks for the advice everyone!

This... Any half ass competent person wouldn't want your nandroid backups. Send her a link to cm7, and call it a day. If she needs help with installation, help her out.
The bottom line here is that you sold her a working phone.
Can you clarify with her that she booted up the phone with the "bare-bones" CM7 installation that you put on it.?
If she did so, then this is the limit of your (sellers) responsibility.
What she does with the phone after this point is her responsibility.
It is splashed all over every ROMs threads first post that the dev takes no responsibility if you brick your phone etc
I would be a nice guy though - find out what she tried to flash and give a little support to her as others have suggested.
After all, thats what the community is all about... Right??
I need to return this phone. Bad pixles. I have unrooted it and restored the stock 2.2 rom nandroid. But this phone was shipped with gingerbread. I can't get it to update using the LG software. It says my software is up to date. So I guess I have to root again and flash the stock gb. Will someone help me locate stock gb zips or nandroids?
you have to do some trick with that lg updater to get it to work. Atleast, I had to. If i can find those steps I'll posted.
try this: unless you found a gb zip..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183168
or here are the zip files..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037120
I havent looked but I am sure there is a nandroid or.zip of stock GB in the dev section. If not I just returned my phone to stock because I got a new one and I just wanted to mess around so went to my original GB from befor I played witht the phone and did a factory reset then made a nandroid copy of that on my old phone because the new one was used and the person had someone else do the rooting and flashing for him and they never made a backup of the original. So I took the nandroid backup from my old phone and restored it on the newer one and it worked perfectly. So If you need and it is allowed I can post the copy of that nandroid backup and that should work I think.
Note I am not an expert so if anyone knows better please chime in. But I think that should be okay to send back for warenty exchange. Unless they really look they wont know the difference. I'm sure that they can always tell if they try jhard enough. So when you are on the phone with them make sure you are polite and dont lose your temper for any reason because that will m ake them look harder for a reason not to help you. Thats just my advice. Good luck
You should flash the development section on your phone
Thanks. I cant seem to figure out how to flash those bin files
Now I've done it! I found this file 2x-v10b-1300166062-nvflash and flashed the "flash" app. Now my phone thinks its a p990. What have I done! How do I reverse this! It wont let me flash clockwork recovery anymore
HOT DAMN! I GOT IT! Finally found exactly what was looking for!
