The following is a list of modems I have tried with my Captivate.
Notes, Setup, etc.
Cognition 5 b2 kernel, provides root and Clockwork capabilities
Stock 2.3.3 KF1 ROM, removed AT&T bloat that's all
"Tests" were done with Speedtest
General observations were noted in the Saratoga/Albany, NY to NYC, NY area.
Davlik cache wiped before each modem flash via Clockwork
GPS testing using AngryGPS
Looks like
doesn't work here, so just follow the link to the google doc until I find an easier way of doing this.

If anyone has any modems that work with I897 Captivate(!not 9000 series) kernels please feel free to list them, I am searching the forums but I know I am missing some. Clockwork or Odin doesn't matter to me. ;-)
These will continue to be tested on ONLY Captivate based kernels.
Thanks for sharing the results...upload speed of the JL3 is interesting indeed.
How did you flash these modems. I wanna try kb1, but can I flash via cwm, considering I'm on cog 5 beta 2 with cwm 4? Is it compatible?

I think I am going to reflash that one today and let it sit for a while, I have had poor results with any of the newer modems and this build.

I just used Odin3 1.81 to flash these on there. The original files are in the CWM zip files and can be placed in the Phone section of Odin.

What I did was:
1) Grab cwm2 KB1 zip and open it
2) Grab any cwm3 modem zip, open it and replace the modem.bin file with the modem.bin from the KB1 zip
3) Copy cwm3 zip to phone
4) Flash with cwm4 (yes it's compatible)
Here is the one I used. Props to devz3r0 for the cwm3 zip I used.
As a follow up the JL1 is completely unreliable in my short experiences with it.
First and Second run with Speed test were great, then I got a call and quality was so-so. Then after the call I couldn't get the data to reconnect and rebooted. Now the speeds are very slow ping times in the 2000ms range and 3G performance is abysmal at best most of the time it just locks up and says network error.
I doubt I will be able to use this much longer today.

I was right I couldn't deal, so I am currently running JJJV5, yes it's a 9000 modem :X I'm going to run this for a while and see if it's stable on KF1. I like the speed of 3G with this one and signal strength seems up there as some places where I would get 2 EDGE bars before I now get 2 3G bars. As stated I will keep this one for a while and post back some experiences.
Ha! Data is awesome, but you can't hear the phone.. So there you go, useless on a Captivate kernel
I see you added JJJV5 to your results.. I've been dying to try this modem after reading all of the good feedback, but I thought it was a I9000 modem and wasn't compatible.
Edit: Didn't see the above post before replying... Let us know how it goes!
Still looking for some more Captivate modems to try out, if there is anymore.

Just added CWM3 downloads to the modems in the list, just so they are all in one place.

I have a feeling that is the way mine is looking too, the non-9000 builds simply aren't giving me the service level I require. My data speed is crap, the GPS is horrid and I can't seem to find the fix no matter what I try.

I thought trying something actually made for our phones would be better, but far from it. I will now stick with i9000 roms and modems, they just work better, faster and are more feature packed. I guess the carriers requirements are the problem. Thanks for your research.

These are flashable modems, flash in CWM.
Modems can effect signal, data, and usually battery life
There are few modems available for our phone at the moment, so if you've have better data/signal with one modem you can now just choose what modem you use on your ROM. Results for data and signal for each modem will not be the same for everyone and it can differ based on where you live so give them a flash and see which modem is best for you !
Post feedback on what modem works best for you and it could help others decide or choose which modem may be best for them.
Thank you and please enjoy !

Nice! I'll be getting a second today, for my lady.
Going to jump on the $49 each for two phones today (I am still in my 30 day trial so I can cancel mine, and put it back on, with my ladies). The $240 ETF with Verizon will be fine, since I will be saving about $60/month with the two phones!

Thanks teddy!
For me, I've always had much better resultws with the KD1 up until now. The KJ2 seems to be a bit better though at holding a strong signal. As my day takes me around the city, I'll be paying attention expecially in places where I've had bad or no reception before to see if there is improvement. Around where I live though, definitely an improvement. [=
So far every modem that I try to flash, using Odin, Heimdall, or CWM, I always get a modem upload failed. Any idea what would cause that to fail for many different modems using many different flashing methods?
Nevermind, I was able to fix it using the one click jar and telling it to repartition, which fails itself, but now the modem flashes.

OK since this is a question I'm assuming that I post this here so if I'm wrong sorry. And I have searched for answers to these questions on xda and Google and if info is out there I can't find it so if someone knows where it is point me in the right direction and I'll read the info myself as I'm not to lazy to research info when I can find it now that that's out of the way my questions are as follows...
1. What does the modem in my phone control the wifi or data and basically what does it do? The quick version will be fine.
2. What does the radio do and controll? Quick version OK.
I just updated to the latest ics leak that came out a couple of days ago I think it UCLD2 correct me if I got that version wrong. I've also tried UCALC4 and with neither I get many bars. On gingerbread I got 2 or 3 bars in my home recliner with UCALC4 I got 1 and with UCLD2 this new leak I get 0. I've read flashing the galaxy note radio will fix this if so I need a link to that radio with instructions on flashing it in cwm. And if that radio does not fix the problem can I flash back to this one or maybe a gingerbread one?
And lastley I'm getting a notification at the bottom of my screen every few minutes that says connected to belkin wifi etc. I did not get this on gingerbread is this also a radio problem or a modem problem or a tottaly different issue? And what can I do to fix it? Should I just restore the backup of gingerbread I made and wait for the official update whatever year that may be lol?
Thanks ahead of time for any help or advice...

I typed "android phone modem" in Google and got an answer on the first page, I'm sorry but I highly doubt u searched anything. None the less, as a new user I will spoon feed u this one time
Radio and modem are interchangeable terms used on CDs to basically describe the firmware used to control your phones cellular radio. Different firmwares enable different functions and frequencies. Basically with no modem, u have no cell data, or signal. No calling, no texting, nothing
UCLCL5 has been pulled due to it causing too many instability issues. getting a phone that works with it is luck of the draw. Use leeC UCLA3 radio for ics instead
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24227420
Sorry but I typed in cell phone modem and of course with that all I got was ways to connect your PC to the internet thru the cell phone. Didn't think about putting android in cause I figured modem would be in all phones oh well I will try that too see what I come up with. I'm in a real wooded very rural area so im not sure if the radio is the main problem I do know other phones like pan tech link a non smart phone gets full signal here but none of our android phones do. My main concern is the wifi saying connected every few minutes and my connection seeming like its slower that problem I did not have on gingerbread or UCALC4 is anyone else having these issues on the new leak

OK I flashed that modem that you gave me the link to then rebooted and BAM!!!!!! Instant signal bars... Thanks man you are awesome and I may be a noober but I'm learning a lot fast thanks to guys like you. I am a computer programmer/web developer/ net worker but phones are new to me but I'm learning in many ways there similar but in other ways miles apart... But thanks again.. oh yea by the way in baseband version it says UCALC4 but in build number it says UCLD2 but the modem I flashed said UCLA3 so I'm not sure what that's all about but its working so if it ain't broke you don't go messing with it...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
yeah, you'll learn about that as u go along, but they're basically different build numbers. UCLD2 is the newest, UCLA4 is the previous ics leak build, and UCLA3 is actually a gingerbread radio (2.3.6), but it works really well.
If I helped I u, and if others do in the future, hit the thanks button!

Yep, I used LeeC's UCLA3 modem for a good while. I tried the others but kept going back to it for the connectivity. Of course, everyone's phone and conditions differ so you have to try anything for yourself before you know if it is going to work for you. Like mentioned, it will probably show "Unknown" for a baseband, but it works. I am using the latest ICS modem (UCLD2) now with the Alien 7 ICS ROM and it seems to work just as well as the UCLA3 modem did for me.
+1 my wifi is even much faster and alot better range on ucld2 radio. Ucld2 is in every aspect. Far superior
Smoother. Faster. Less bugs
And easier to build from
I built my new rom. The ucld2 one. And did the themeing. In 1 afternoon.
Of course i have a great setup i ended up with from dealing with. The other leak. But i still say its much more refined
The UCLA3 modem worked good for me no doubt but as you said every phone is different and I like to try new things and stay cutting edge so I flashed the UCLC5 modem out of the galaxy note and my download speeds are faster with it but like you said it seems to depend on the phone itself and I would suggest anyone who is gonna try a new modem to try each one for a day or two to see which one is the right fit for your specific phone...

I'm assuming that the OP meant to list UCALC4 not UCALC2, as UCALC4 is the modem from the 1st I727 ICS leak and UCALC2 does not appear to be a modem for any phone that I am aware of (though UCLC2 is an older ICS leaked modem for the I777 which is not compatible with this phone).
Also, the link for that one is actually a link to the UCLA3 modem again.

Unconfirmed. I don't pay for LTE service since I only ever pass through a small LTE zone. When I pass through the zone, I seem to pick up LTE, but I can't confirm specific bands or LTE speeds.

Blaze supports those bands, but only at 4g speeds. Connectivity is considered good, but if u have access to consistent LTE u will be unable to take advantage of it. I recommend ucld2, comparable to UCLA3, testing for over a week, was running ucla3 on ics beforehand
is the fix needed for the bell note modem (its a gb modem) will find the link for it.
emmellst, where did you get the UCLD2 modem? This modem is more stable for me than seanzscreams. Thanks!
With seanz' modem, I would often lose internet connection and sms even though it shows I have signal. And I have to keep playing with *#2263# when I restart as I can't get LTE until then.
But with the modem you linked here, I get LTE right away after reboot and I haven't experienced the internet connection and sms issue.
I did compare the contents of the zip between yours and seanz' and there's a difference in the amss and mdm sizes.
Anyway, I was just curious and very thankful for your links.

Hey guys,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I looked at the Blaze 4G thread in the Development forum and searched but didn't really find an answer / didn't wanna revive the thread so anyhow, two questions!
1. Some ROMs ask you to flash this after flashing the ROM. Is that for speed or is it because the stock radio / modem gets erased / doesn't work as well with the ROM? Sorry, I feel like this is a noob question but I'm asking because some ROMs have custom kernels (which I'm guessing replaces stock kernal? Or maybe you flash that separately?) so if the ROM asks you to flash radio, is it because it doesn't have radio and stock radio gets deleted / doesn't work?
2. If they tell you to flash the Blaze 4G modem just for speed (and the stock radio doesn't get removed / works just fine), is it worth flashing it when where I live doesn't have 4G capabilities (yet)? Like would it mess up the frequency or something / change it from GSM status to like CMDA or something? sorry, ANOTHER noob question, OT but I read somewhere in XDA that they had a radio (or something, I can't remember what sorry) that could unlock Droid 4 from CDMA to GSM or something so I'm worried that flashing this might make it not work in the UK frequency anymore / not really be worth flashing because it wouldn't affect speed much anyway?
Its useful for internet speed and range. Its 4G only, so this wouldn't be of use to you, sorry.

Thanks for the reply! So I'm guessing stock radio would work as normal? I'm thinking about flashing GOV3 and it said to flash Blaze 4G after flashing ROM so I wasn't sure if it was necessary or just a preference
No problem. Well in your case, 4G isn't supported so keeping the default stock modem is perferred, this will present less problems.

Good feedback. For future reference, what network in Romania are you using? (I wasn't aware it increased signal strength on different carriers, but that's good to know!)

If it ain't broken don't try something that could break it?! Haha thanks for the info though if I'm having noticeable issues with stock radio, I'll look into flashing this!
How do I back up stock radio though? Not flash a version of the stock radio uploaded here, but the one that came with my phone? Ya'know ... just in case
Flash any ROM (I mean ANY) and it'll come back.
