Anyone here have a tablet?

I'm considering getting a new/first tablet. However, I'm not quite sure which one I want to get. I'm curious if anyone here has an android tablet or is getting considering one. If you do have one, what is it and how do you like it?
I'm looking at everything but currently the tablets I'm eyeing the most are:
- Transformer Prime: Sounds like a beast. I do worry it will be a bit expensive and I'm not sure when it will make its way to Canada. I'm also not sure I really even need that kind of power for what I want to do on a tablet.
- Motorola Xoom: Has similar specs to pretty much every other tablet on the market right now. It also will probably be the tablet with the most dev support for quite a while I imagine (until a "nexus" tablet comes out). +it's price point shouldn't be too bad at this point and it's scheduled for ICS update
- Xoom 2: Kind of like the design of this (even if the specs are only a small update to the Xoom). Problem is I have no idea if this will come to the states, let alone Canada anytime soon. Also seems kinda "blurified".
- Sony Tablet S: Available in Canada, but not sure how good of a price I can get on this (compared to the Xoom which has near-identical specs). I really like the design and am a big fan of Sony products in general.
Any tablets you guys eyeing or own?

Tablets are just as particular as phones. When you got your XT, I bet you thought it was the top of the heap. I did. Then I found out about all its little issues and problems, but also about the really good things it has. No way I could have known then. From what I can gather, tabs are the same thing. I have seen Galaxy tabs rocking it, but then in some people's signatures on XDA I see "Nook running CM7". In the states you can get a Nook for pretty cheep, easy to root and then put a stable CM7 on it a go with it.
Now RAM and memory are something I don't know anything about. Not even sure how much small RAM would be like our meager 256 on the XT. I actually would be interested in knowing that. With our current locked bootloader situation, I would stay away from the Xoom, even though I think there is a leak. I will never buy a Motorola again b/c of their user policies. I see the Bionic and actually laugh to myself b/c I already know it will be a locked bootloader (but the average person will think it is the best phone ever made. You know that most people don't even know what XDA, root or evena custom ROM is?).
Personally, my wife and I have talked about it and really don't understand the attraction to tabs. If you have a tab running CM7, with flash, email, skype,...it is extremely similar to just having a bigger screened phone. One caveat is that HP discontinued their global personal computer operations (now they are exclusive to technical management solutions- or some crap like that). But suspending their personal computer options does have one benefit for you and me. Their tabs dropped from $699us to $99/139us, but everyone with an online credit card picked one up a few months ago. Bestbuy just sent back all 250,000 they had in stock, so you might be able to still pick one up on the cheap (not android os though).
And finally, Rev is in one of my G+ circles and he posts a fair amount of tablet info, so you might want to PM him and find out his thoughts.

Actually, although it pains me to say this, the Xoom is a Google developer device and can be easily unlocked by users (i.e. it's like the OG Droid). I think you're thinking of the leaked Atrix unlock. I would assume Xoom 2 is probably wearing a chastity belt until proven deflowered.

Nope. I got mine quite a bit after it came out. I didn't really understand the RAM issues and other issues it had though... (was still pretty new to Android).
I would stay away from the Xoom, even though I think there is a leak.

It has unlockable/relockable bootloader and most likely the biggest developer community of any tablet atm and for a while (it's like a nexus phone I'd say).
Personally, my wife and I have talked about it and really don't understand the attraction to tabs.

I actually felt much the same way until recently. I do have uses for a tablet, though I've been thinking of the "it's a bigger screened phone" bit as well. There are certain things that I want to do that I can't do on the smaller screen of my phone (i.e. productivity stuff such as writing down lecture notes and working on essays, video chatting on a larger screen etc...). But some of the functionality on the tab is definitely duplicated by a phone. That's why I really love concepts such as the Padfone... (but that's not coming out for quite a while I believe...). I don't really love the idea of having both tablet and phone (superfluos in some ways), but I want something that combines the functionality of both...

My brother has the Asus Transformer and its a beast!! He has had it since day one and everytime I go over there I got to get my sticky lil fingers all over it. He bought the keyboard dock to which makes it twice as good + the full HDMI mirroring makes it awesome. Its also unlockable. He's running one of the newest prime roms with the o/c and there's no waiting for anything. Theres a pretty big dev comunity for it. Plus it has the ips display, which is the same as ipad. If I were you tho I'd wait for the quad cores.... then by a dual core, they will be way cheaper then.(hopefully) :/ lol who needs more than 2 cores in a tablet anyway.

I bought the Acer A500 when Walmart has them for $299 ($399 but you get a $100 gift card free), but my biased opinion says it is a bit on the big/bulky side. I felt that 10" is not very easy to handle given my small Asian hands. It is also not the lightest, and when I am reading in the bed my arm would get tired from just holding it up. Nonetheless even the Xoom or Galaxy Tab isn't that much lighter so I think maybe it's just me nick-picking.
Long story short I returned it but am very interested in the new 8.9" tab... That may be my sweet-spot on size. Same resolution screen, smaller/lighter to handle, but I will need to see how it's battery life fares.

I read a great review on Android Police about the Galaxy tab 8.9 and they said battery life was awesome. They hated on the touch wiz ui tho. They said it made everyday tasks sluggish.

Well, that's good to hear! I was secretly hoping the smaller screen will mean less battery drain (since I believe the 8.9's battery rating was lower). Regarding the UI... I can always wait for a custom ROM to show up here at some point! I just started playing with MIUI for my XT720 and I love it wwaaaaay better than any of the other UI I've used before. Gotta love the development community on Android!!

2011 is nearly at is end, so I'm gonna say in now. Xoom was the best tablet of 2011

I know that's just like my opinion and stuff, most tech blogswill vote for 10.1tab or ipadpon 2 but we know which tab was the greatest of 2011 without a doubt. First honeycomb, first everything.

I own a Galaxy SII and a Xoom (MZ605, 3G + Wi-fi). I am extremely happy with my SGS2 and very disappointed with the Xoom.
The Galaxy is a much better android device than the Zoom. I know we're comparing onions to potatoes here, but if the Galaxy S II is any indication of what the Galaxy Tab is, then I regret immensely to have bought the Xoom instead of the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The sgsII is imo the best phone out right now. Lack of sd card and plasticy back make the tab ten.one less desirable for me than xoom. It's just that the xoom came out way before the tab so I was basing my opinion on the fact that we have had much more experience with the honeycomb ui than most tab owners. Either way both tablets provided the best android experience available in 2011 and can't wait to see what next year brings.

I love my Xoom... to me it has been the best of the bunch in overall comparison for 2011, and it still has plenty of life in it. I would love my next tab to be a Xoom as well, but the new ones don't impress me.

I have now owned 5 tabs total including the "almighty" Galaxy 10.1 and the Xoom was the only one that didnt end up on Craigslist! The only thing the Galaxy had over my Xoom was the screen colors. Not enough to justify trading up though, i love my Xoom......

I live my xoom, but its too big for most tablets. Lots of then are so much smaller really thinner. I don't understand why this thing is so thick? But it does gave an sd card slot and that makes a huge difference to me, but the screens also kinds sucks!

I prefer the thick, heavy metal feel of the Xoom. I pick up other tablets and most feel like toys, don't really give something solid to hold on to. With all the features and the tank-like build I am sold. Coming from a Tegra phone it is also cool to see how cool the Xoom runs while under a heavy overclocked load. Just a real nice platform.
Some like their Phantoms, some like their Miatas. I'll keep my Rolls Royce!

The Xoom was the best to me because of speaker placement. When shopping for tablets I found the Xoom to have the best sound...bar none.

That`s exactly why I chose the Xoom over the GTab 10.1. I like the fact that I can simply upgrade my uSD card rather than have a device whose storage can't be upgraded.
I already bought a Class 10, 32Gb uSD card from DealExtreme.

I think the next xoom after the xoom2 will be really impressive. Probably sometime in April/may one year after most of us have had our of xoom they will come out with quad core,2560 x 1600 screen, 2gb ram, my wish list could go on but I mean tablets are so new that motorola should be able to get their act together and bring us another groundbreaking tablet like the og xoom.

I don't like the speakers on the back because when I try to listen to something by myself the sound shoots behind the tablet into other rooms, I would have liked front facing.

If you place something behind it or cup your hands around the speakers... even in a case, it sounds like surround sound.

I have an Sg2 phone....the best by far in my opinion. I also have a Xoom tablet which I also think is the best. The specs on the Galaxy tab fell short because of the lack of SD card. My other beef about android in general is the latency factor....as I understand it about 100ms v 10ish on an ipad. It's almost (though not quite) enough to make me go for an ipad

I'd say best Android tablet of the year for sure. In spite of "not being an iPad killer", 4G/SD debacle, there was very little trade-off with the Xoom. Might be a little thick and heavy, but with the OTG cable, SD slot after root, direct HDMI out, 32GB base storage, and typically the quickest OS updates I don't see how this wasn't the ultimate Android tablet this year. GED. Year end promise of ICS.
Samsung had some "wow" factor with it's thin sleek device, and it probably got more consumers considering Android than the Xoom. But there's more trade-offs with no expansion, no built in HDMI, multiple dongles. I agree with the less solid feeling on that tablet too. I always give phones and tablets a good bend test and the Samsung did not pass.

Neither did the original ASUS Transformer! I guess they have addressed that with the new Transformer Prime.

[Q] Xoom Advice?

I am considering joining your crowd, and unfortunately, I cannot get in with the Staples deal. Would you mind answering a few questions for me ?
1) How is ICS official release shaping up for you, any nagging issues or lost functionality?
2) I've found a used Xoom (wifi, ics) at the same price (~$330) as a new Transformer TF101. There are dozens of comparisons, I know, but I can't get over the fact that the local B&M's seem to have more than a few open box asus returns due to issues. That being said should I consider getting the xoom at this point?
3) Have any of you experienced any long-term reliability issues? I've searched and searched, and it seems somewhat few and far-between. Big things I am after is stand-alone GPS performance, and screen with minimal light-bleed.
4) Forget xoom completely, and wait? But for what?

So, one of the big perks with the Motorola Xoom is it's easily unlocked bootloader. This gives you the obvious advantage of NOT having to run the stock software. If just running stock is more what you're into, I would look at other options in the field, personally.
Current ICS based roms, however, have fleshed out very nicely for our device. There doesn't appear to be any lost functionality or issues and I've been quite happy since I started flashing them. Speed seems as good, if not better and my fantastic battery life just keeps getting better.

Can't say I'm crazy about the Transformer, but that's just me. The only real selling point it has over the Xoom, as far as I can see, is the ability to attach the keyboard. Personally, if that's something I really needed, I would have looked into an Apple Air (or a beefy netbook).

Long term, no. I was a day-one 3g model adopter and some of those fresh off the assembly line models had some questionable build issues. Mine, for example, would made this odd creaking noise if you applied any pressure to the left side of the screen and the seam between the speakers/camera and the component cover was a little squishy if I were to press it the right way.
So I took mine back to Verizon and my replacement was flawless That is, until I dropped it in the fountain the atrium at work while trying to avoid hitting some kids running around, and the thing stopped working. Thankfully, Verizon sorta had my back and we hopped on a call with Motorola and the Verizon CSR more or less strong armed Motorola into giving me a free replacement.

I can't say what to wait for, but you are looking at picking up a device that has been discontinued. It has, in my experience, great performance and I don't personally plan to replace mine for at LEAST another year or more. If you're OK with that, you'll be getting a lot of tablet for the $300 mark, even if it's not the top of the line model.
My guess is the Xoom will still be a solid option for another 12-18 months for those who don't need to have the super-duper top of the line everything. Sure, there will be a few games that will work better on new hardware, but the core of what you would use a tablet for would likely not benefit from newer models in that time frame.

I don't see much value in the latest and greatest thus far, and though it feels like I am overpaying at this point (considering other member deals), I do feel the reliability and community support is there.

And the stand-alone GPS is fantastic.

Like I said above, the biggest think to remember is that you would be buying a device that has been discontinued. So in very short order, it will be extremely hard to find chargers, docks, cases, etc as most places will have liquidated their inventory. My tip would be to make sure you buy anything you even think you may want for this thing when you buy it.

The only thing that I don't like in the Xoom is the screen which has some ghosting effect with some colors.
Compared to my Galaxy S2 screen it has a lot less quality, but at least it doesn't hurt eyes of you use it for a long time (amoled screens seem more tiring to me).
Materials are very good, it is very solid and ICS is amazing.
If you have ever seen a tablet with Honeycomb... forget about that! Ice Cream Sandwich is a lot faster, smother and stable.
Asus Transformer has a better screen (as far as I know, I have never seen it) but worse materials.
And not only it has not official ICS. It doesn't even have a decent ICS custom ROM.

If you are lucky to get Xoom for a good price it's awesome, ICS feels so smooth

One thing about the Transformer 1 is that the screen is better except for a huge amount of light bleeding. I returned mine for that reason and got the Xoom. Very happy with it.
Consider the Samsung Galaxy or the Transformer Prime. I got the Prime and its good, quad core, thin and a very good screen with no light bleed. Best buy here has them in stock.

Im looking to venture into the world of tablets but with so many being available its all a little confusing! I like the look of the Nexus 7 for its power and incredibly good price but for me 7 inches is just a bigger phone I want something with the price tag and power (near enough) of a Nexus but with something like a 10 inch screen to make it feel like an actual tablet. Im only 16 with a part time job so i cant go for something like the Asus Infinity even though i would love that

Your choices are quite limited; 10 inchers are usually at least $400.
I would recommend watching slickdeals.net for some reburbished deal if you really need one. In truth, however, the difference between 7 inch and phone is already quite significant and it makes the most sense for your price point (short of a "cheap" brand like archos).

i think go for the ipad if you like a bigger screen than nexus 7 ipad is also have the speed.

I love the size of my nexus7 so far there's not much I don't love about this tablet!I hear they are releasing a 10 inch soon so you could wait for that but I don't know if it will be tegra3 or Qualcomm. Again this tablet rocks! Rooted w/ stock ROM cwm recovery & trinity kernel.

I would recommend the Toshiba Excite 10 inch. It has HDMI out with an SD card slot. That's the tablet I would get if I wanted one.
Another good option is the Asus as you mentioned. You can look up the Samsung Galaxy Note Tablet. It comes with a stylus and I think it has app that directly support it. You can't go wrong with any of these. Just pick the features that you want and get it. I would suggest going to your local electronics store and trying them out to see which one you like as each of them have customized their Android OS with their custom apps and settings. All of the mentioned above have quad cores so you can't go wrong with that.
If you're looking for smaller/cheaper then you can go with the Samsung Galaxy Player 5. Its $200 and its what I use for my "tablet" experience. Its smaller and portable than the above but that may not be what you want. Note that this is a single core so you're sacrificing power and size but you gain portability.

I dont mind saving up for the more pricey tablets because im currently 4 weeks into my summer holidays and the rest of my work has to fit around my A-Levels.
A 10inch Nexus would be great but the realease date could be a while yet!
I wont be taking the tablet out the house much only to go away to my Caravan every weekend

Im not incredibly desperate, Just want to replace my crappy Acer Extensa 5235
I think i might wait for the Nexus 10 but the Galaxy note 10.1 is catching my eye although its aimed at artists and creative people ( I cant draw to save my life )

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and i have been loving it so far! I haven't even needed to root it, i'm still stock and its quick with a beautiful screen! I got the 16GB WiFi version with a 32GB MicroSD b/c i watch TV on it while i'm at work. The battery life is just AMAZING! I don't think i've ever gone lower than 50%! And i watch shows and movies for HOURS! There is some noticeable lag every now and again, but its usually pretty peppy! And it comes stock with ICS, they have even rolled out 2 updates since i bought mine! Thats rare! No word yet on if it will get Jelly Bean, but it doesn't matter to me, i love this tabby! Good luck on your hunt!

A good tablet would be the Toshiba excite 10. It has a nice screen, tegra 3, several ports, and very good speakers. The best part is that it's only $300 at Costco.

Is the Xoom still worth getting?

Hello everyone. Right now I have an Acer Iconia A100 7" tablet. I really want a 10" tablet but dont have a lot that I can spend for one. Ive been looking at the Xoom for a little while now since I can find them around the $200 range if Im lucky. The question is, with the Nexus 10 out now, is it still worth it to get a Xoom or would it be better to hold out a few months and save for a Nexus 10?
And if it helps, I would be using the tablet for a little of everything. Internet, music, movies, games and a lot of reading (mostly comics).
I greatly appreciate any info that can be provided.

Well, kinda depends on your needs. Xoom is and has always been a strong tablet, but at two years old, it is starting to show it's age.
Xoom is a versatile, solid, all around tablet, 32 gb with expandable storage, bluetooth, hdmi, and usb. It's weakness's mainly are the backlight, it's heft (for some) and it's age. 720p display, and about impossible to see outside during daylight(sunlight and overcast.) Tegra2 is a good processor but dated and unable to take advantage of all the benefits of newer games demanding the power of a quadcore like the tegra3 ( dead trigger.) Right now it is very minor things we are missing out on. Eventually there may be games we can't play at all. More than likely Jelly bean is the last official update the xoom will get. I can't speak for the developers. If you don't care about latest and greatest, but need something fully functional and good bang for the buck...... xoom is a definite option
Nexus 10 has a great display, true 1080p, and the A15 cortex dual core processor destroys the tegra3 quad core in comparison tests from what I have read. It is the closest any tablet has come to being what the xoom was two years ago. The deal breaker for me is no expandable storage.

Thanks for the great info Draxin. You have me some things to think about. I can do without the 1080p and thinking about it I'm not sure that running the newest and greatest games matters. On the other hand viewing outside is kind of a big deal.

True. But Johnny Danger isnt looking to sell off a xoom, he wants to know if it is a viable option still in the 10 inch market. So he needs to ask himself what he wants from his new tablet before purchasing. Xoom is a fantastic tablet and easily one of the best purchases I have made, but I made my purchase almost a year ago when it was still running honeycomb stock and developers were porting ICS. I Got to watch it make leaps and bounds in functionality, smoothness, and reaching for the limits of it's potential. Now developers are facing the limitations of the space in the system partition for OS. And it sounds like they can't scrape any extra space from the internal sd or make some available on the ext. sd cause it is locked. So if Johnny Danger wants a solid, hard working tablet that can do anything he wants to do now, and should be able to do most(if not all) tasks in the future, the xoom is a perfect fit, he just needs to be aware that what we have now may be close to as good as he will get over the next two years of ownership(not saying it is bad), just saying don't expect much more from Motorola.
If he wants the latest and greatest games at their full potential, see movies in full resolution get OTA's of newer OS's and have a tablet equipped to get the most out of anything coming down the pike in the next two years, he needs to save up and get the nexus 10, conveniently priced at around the same range the xoom was when it first came out

If you asked 3-4 months ago, well yes.. But now there is no reason to buy a 2 years old device (and was out AOSP) with price ~$300.

True, I fully understand the question. Basically the gist was yes it is still worth getting if it suits his needs no argument.

AOSP or AOKP depends on which ROM chosen. (rooted)

I'm fully happy with xoom and this will be long relationship. I had in my hands asus transformer but truelly i cant see any limitations or u want gaming on it - but its not for it.

Well I went ahead and got a xoom. I bought a used one on Craigslist and feel that I got a good deal. I got 32gb xoom, original box and charger, official Motorola xoom cover, and 2 screen protectors for $150.
I absolutely love it. Everything runs great, including the games I play. My son was watching YouTube videos on it and sometimes it hiccups but that doesn't bother me. The thing that really took me by surprise is the battery life. It lasts so long on a charge. Now I understand why people were so upset with the Acer iconia tab a100 battery life. This is one of the fewer purchases I have no regrets about. Just a fantastic tablet.

Good on ya! I really don't think you'll have any regrets, it's still a very speedy tablet and the build quality is unsurpassed.

You're kidding yourself if you think it has anything to do with marketing. The Xoom has been showing its age for a while. Its great that devs continue to bring us the latest firmware but even they have acknowledge that the Xoom's limits are being pushed.
It is as you said, relative to needs, but I think its also good to think about the future. What will a 2 year old device be able to do a year from now? Two years from now?
I'd say save up honestly and hope for a sale on the N10 (tho it looks like the OP already invested v0v)

I just made the same switch today I paid 50 more then you but my girl has n7 I did not want same thing so I just got this but I like it actually have not even rooted

@Cubanluke88, Im well aware that a 2 year old device is not going to be on par with the most recent devices, like the N10. But at this point it was a matter of me wanting a 10" tablet that would do what I needed it to do now. I may still get a N10 in a few months and just give my Xoom to one of my kids (I have three, two that are teens). But for right now, its working great and I couldnt be happier. Especially at the price I paid. I might be getting a new job soon and if I do, Im going to be taking a hour train ride to work and back and Im just happy to know that Im going to have a nice big tablet to provide entertainment on those train rides if I do get the job.

Like the OP I'm looking to get a reasonably priced tablet for Browsing, a little eReading and some video watching. It's hard enough to justify what is really a gadget purchase and I certainly can't justify the ~€500 price ranges of the top tablets. My target is around the €200 mark.
I like the look of the Nexus 7, but the small screen bothers me a little. I've a Sony Xperia S and 7 inches doesn't seem to give me enough of a boost over it's 4.3 inches to justify spending €250. So I'm looking at reputable brands which have been discounted (due to age or market forces) rather than the budget trinkets that you can get. I even considered a heavily discounted Playbook (~€170) but that's just too far out of the park in terms of OS, support, etc.
I can get a Xoom II (16 GB, WiFi) for about €280, but thats at the upper end of my target budget. I can get a Xoom (32 GB WiFi) (B-stock, new but damaged/opened packaging) for €200, and that has my attention. But I'm worried about the processor speed and the display. I could also get a new Xoom II ME (16 GB, WiFi) for about the same price, €200. Apart from the newer specs (a faster processor and better screen), the 8.2 inch format strikes me as possibly more portable (for use while commuting). WiFi only is also fine for me as when I'm not in a normal WiFi area I'll use my Xperia S as a hotspot.
So, given my budget limitations and the fact that it's probably for light browsing/reading use (some videos while on holidays perhaps), would the Xoom II ME or the older Xoom be the best bet? Is the new screen a worthwhile upgrade? Thoughts please?

Update: Having read a bit more about portability and useability of the various sizes (7, 8 and 10) I'm leaning towards the Xoom 2 ME.

Actually there are quite a few new screen prtectors that dont degrade the quality that allow you to still see your xoom in the sunlight

Well, I finally plumped for the Xoom 2 ME. 8.2 inch screen, price (€200 vs €250) and mini HDMI clinched it over the Nexus 7, plus I really think that I don't need Quad Core nor will I do for a few years yet. Portability beat the Xoom or Xoom 2.
Only qualm is that I ordered it from Expansys as they had the best price (by about €25). For a mainstream seller it has far more negative reviews than it should have (they should really take their Facebook page offline). I did order via Amazon rather than directly, perhaps that adds a little more security to the order.
Hopefully I'll be one of the 89% positive buyers. :fingers-crossed:

Well, whatever Expansys is doing wrong for some, it was a pretty efficient transaction for me. Ordered it from Expansys via Amazon on Monday night and it was delivered (via a forwarding company from a UK address) by Wednesday night! Picked it up this morning.
I've only played with it a little and charged it up. Will do the ICS update when I get home as the work wifi is acting up. I was able to tether it to my Xperia S and so far it's looking nice, though the web browsing seemed a little jerky/laggy. Maybe ICS will improve that.
I have since noticed that my Xperia S actually has a faster CPU, more storage, a higher ppi, a better camera and will likely get Jelly Bean later in Q1. If only it had an 8 inch screen
