What tools/apps do you use? - General Questions and Answers

Hows it going guys. I'm on these forums as well as many others constantly. I'm constantly trying new stuff (Tools, apps, mods, ROMS, Kernels, etc) and have always wondered what other people from the community used. So if you would post some apps/tools you would recommend for any purpose. Whether it be for games/mods/messaging/etc because I plan on going through and trying everything posted. I might find something very useful i havent before. Anyways thanks for taking the time
App:
Location to download:
Purpose:
Best feature about it:

Well, it is all very individual. One person thinks his app is cool, another will not even look at it. I download everything from android market because several days age I caught a trojan while downloading from Internet - it was some live wallpaper or so. Beware of files where it's written that they may send paid sms.
As for apps:
I liked Explorer+ very very much. It is the best explorer because it's well organized and has a search button.
Next antivirus Avast is awesome. It has inbuilt antytheft and prevents the phone from sending paid sms.
GoldenDict helps me a lot. You may load there your dictionaries you need and use them.
I like Kaiten Mail email client as well. It is simple to use and everything is handy.
OfficeSuite is also nice. I came to android from wm and have windows xp at BB. So it opens all my documents easily without any dances.
Hope it helped. Waiting for your list as well.
PS. I need a substitution for my spb finance and need to convert my 3-year base to android. Can you suggest anything?

Mobile: HTC Sensation
Rom: Elegancia ICS (actually v3.3.5) with Sense 3.6
Kernel: 1,5GHz - 3.0.16-gda3fdfc by SebastianFM
Favoured Apps:
Mail: K9 - in my opinion nice to use and to configure
Messenger: WhatsApp / IM+ (Jabber/XMMP-Support)
Navigation: Navigon Mobile (payed) - reliable/stable
Antivirus: Kaspersky Mobile (payed) - really high hit rate
Alarm Clock: Alarm Clock Plus - many features for alarmclock like caculation for shutdown alarm
File Explorer: EStrongs / ES - well-arranged/easy to browse
Webbrowser: Opera Mobile - dunno y
Maybe there are some suggestions for you

I use esfile explore because its easy, free, clean looking and gets the job done, on cm7 roms or cm9 rom I delete the stock file manager..simply because its useless, and just taking up space, instead of having 2 file managers I just keep es and delete the stock. I use wifi tether, everyware I go I have my phone and my tablet, so if I need internet on my tablet or if my freind needs internet for his itouch then I just turn on my wifi hotspot. Apk manager is great for editing system images. Gimp is great for creating images or changing colors for my phone/tablet system. Opera mini is very fast for quick searching unlike most stock browsers, if you don't need flash then go with opera

ColorNote is an app that I use all the time, if you haven't tried it, check it out. It's a good note app, check list, task list, etc. It is attractive and easy to use.
Another app that is good is Bing. I didn't expect to like it but if you are looking for just about anything, it will find it - local stuff, stores, services, movies, web searches, pizza, you name it.

YEHAAA a little bit shameless self advertisement:
You should obviously try SD Maid, which will satisfy all your file handling needs.
And if you are the type that likes to put CPU/RAM etc. usage on his desktop computers wallpaper try Diagnosis.
If you have apps in the market, andlytics is pretty awesome.
Give this a try too, while you sleep.

Titanium backup is a very good tool for all who change there rom very often (like me because of CM9)
Also I like PlayerPro because it has advenatges like sleep timer etc.

[APP] Remote Web Desktop

Hello everyone, I have been using this and it seems to work great with our phones, I'm currently accessing it through the "bridge" option so i cant test the actual remote desktop or screenshot apps to see if they truely do work with our phones, but the file explorer, webcam and sms apps work GREAT
The "Remote Web Desktop" is a great application that allows you to remotely access many of your android systems commonly used features remotely from any web browser; my personal favorite is the ability to retrieve and send text messages. Other things are available such as the ability to navigate through the file system on the device from a PC. One nice thing is that "SmartDog Software" does that other applications don’t, is it allows you to "bridge" your device through their web portal in case your device isn’t on the same network as the computer. I highly recommend this application
here is a link to it in the market

Been using this for a while. I've considered rolling out my own version as a lot of the features are still iffy if implemented at all. But for sms it's excellent.
Just installed this... this is really nice... i like it... screen shot capture aint workin... hopefully most of this stuff will work..
edit: spoke to soon.. none hardly of the features are working on cm7. uninstalled...

[New App] AirDroid Lets Your Desktop Control Your Android Phone Over WiFi

For those who spend a lot of time looking at a computer, and can't be bothered to look at their phone very often, Sand Studio has introduced AirDroid, an app that allows users to control their Android Phone from a computer via WiFi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WfNnQxpw7Uw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfXRhSIm-m0
The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.
One of the most impressive features is the ability to access SMS messages, manage them, and send messages right from a web browser. Users can also manage contacts, uninstall/backup apps (AirDroid will download your apps as apk files), browse files, access the Android Market, and manage music and ringtones, in addition to the ability to look at phone information from CPU status to battery level and beyond.
Best of all, AirDroid is completely free from the Android Market. With all the powerful features it offers, this app is certainly worth checking out.

edit: just installed the app..sometimes the app makes the phone go crazy!! i have to logout fro the browser or turn off wifi for the phone to become normal.
This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.
@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway
This app is by far the best solution I have tried in this regard, it just works and damn well too
@Cornelha
Lol.... I get what you're saying, but I think it's a little naive... the information we hold on smartphones these days compared to "our old nokias" means security is vital. After years of dodgy torrents, malware and hacked accounts, I've learnt to take it a bit more seriously, albeit probably to the extreme

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.
one of the best app i ever know

I love AirDroid!!! It helps me to transfer photos and files from my phone to my PC wirelessly. I don't need to carry my cable anywhere with me. It's a great app. Nice job!

From Apple to Android

And my question is, what are some nice tips and tricks for users who are coming to the good side. (From iPhone to Skyrocket) /rant I didn't plan on getting an android phone, but my iPhone shut down on me during use, took it back to apple, they said it was water damaged. (WHAT?! It obviously was not, but the water sensors apparently went off, and this is apples way of getting out of replacing a phone) This was the last straw for me, apple then said that i can upgrade to the new model for 150 dollars extra.. This isn't the first time apple screwed me over, i got a macbook for college that also randomly died out, i spent extra money on a warranty to cover breaks and malfunctions ect.. One day the macbook breaks, and i bring it to apple, guess what happens next... Well macbooks have water sensors too, so for this reason, IT VOIDS MY WARRANTY!! I'm sick of apple. I turned down the phone offer, went to AT&T and bought a skyrocket, i always loved to use android and i always wanted to know how it felt to have a different OS. I love it so far. So i was wondering, Are there any apps, for android, that you CANNOT live without? (first post, sorry if there are similar threads^^)
There are a few good ones. Welcome to XDA by the way!
I personally can't live without a root file explorer, a screenshot app (if your phone doesn't support in-bult screenshots), a custom Launcher and a backup application.
You'll need 'root' on your device to get the most out of these. Think of 'root' as an Administrator account on your phone. It allows you to read AND write changes to the system-protected areas of the phone. It has the potential to do a lot of damage in the wrong hands, but research is your friend. I am happy to walk you through or point you in the right direction on rooting your Skyrocket if you wish!
A Root File Explorer is exactly what it is. It's a file explorer for your device, that uses root to allow you to add/modify/delete system-protected files. I highly recommend Root Explorer from the Market. It's a paid app, but very much worth the small change. You will find it invaluable as you delve further into the world of Android.
A screenshot app allows you to take screenshots of whatever is on your device. It usually requires root also, unless it is supported on your device (Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note off the top of my head). Very handy for showing people errors/messages etc, plus sharing your homescreens in Off-Topic
A custom Launcher replaces whatever App Launcher comes installed on your phone. All Android manufacturers apply their own 'skin' or 'Launcher' over the top of vanilla Android (you will see this called 'AOSP' for Android Open Source Project) to make their devices 'easier to use' and 'more appealing'. The vast majority are pretty horrid, although they are slowly getting better. Some common Launchers:
HTC = Sense
Samsung = TouchWiz
Motorola = Blur
You can replace these in-built, often a bit sluggish, launchers with a custom one from the Android Market (your best friend on an Android Phone - it's the same as the App Store). I personally use LauncherPro on all my devices, although development for it is almost non-existent now it is still one of the slickest, most polished lauchers around. Custom launchers often let you do way more than 'stock' launchers like change icons, hide apps from the app drawer, add/subtract homescreens and add their own (quite polished) 'widgets' (small homescreen apps).
A backup application is necessary for creating backups before flashing new ROMs or other customisations. My one and only recommendation here is Titianium Backup, although there are plenty of others TiBu is quick, easy and powerful (it also uses root to allow you to uninstall or 'freeze' (stop) system applications from loading).
I am in no way affiliated with any of the above mentioned Apps, they are simply my personal recommendations on what I can't do without on an Android phone.
Feel free to hit me up with any questions you may have afterwards, and welcome to Android! Enjoy!
awesome! thanks!
For me its go launcher, tapatalk (for forum browsing), camera zoom fx (replacement camera app) and es file explorer (I use this to copy from pc to phone or dlna server and it also explores ftp etcetera).
Also gemini app manager for stopping apps autorunning and lbe privacy guard for stopping specific features of phone being used by apps though does eat a bit of battery.

First of all, welcome to XDA and to Android.
Personally- I can't live without the usual Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr applications, I would recommend 3G Watchdog if you want to keep an eye on your internet usage.
I would highly recommend a screenshot application and an alternative launcher- You can use 'No Root Screenshot It' if you don't wish to root your device, this is really easy to set up and simple to use. I use a launcher named Go Launcher Ex- plenty of customization and features as alternative launchers support themes and renaming applications and changing their icons. If you don't like Go Launcher then check out Launcher Pro, ADW Launcher and Launcher 7 as they are also very nice.
I'd recommend Advanced Task Killer (helps preserve battery by closing down apps with one simple touch), AppSaver to back up and install apps easily from your SD Card, it also has an App2SD tab. Quickpic is a great alternative gallery app which loads a lot faster than the stock one.
Finally I'd recommend an app named Vlingo- if you're familiar with Siri from the iPhone 4S then it'll be right up your street. It's a voice-recognition application which does most things that Siri can. It's great fun and has a hand-free mode for when you're driving or what not.
Also, Android devices can be rooted and flashed. If you're not familiar with this then rooting is basically giving yourself full access to your device- including system files etc, it's essential if you want to get the most out of your device and most phones can be rooted very easily with a simple one-click method, after a device is rooted you can then install a custom recovery such as Clockwork which will allow you to install custom ROM's such as Cyanogenmod, Custom ROM's are very customizable and generally perform much better than a stock rom- I'd recommend rooting and flashing your device once you get used to it but please read up a lot about what you're doing and follow guides step by step, take it slow, being too eager can result in a bricked phone, who wants an expensive paper weight ey?
I hope this helped. Have a great day and again, welcome to Android!
Some of my personal must-haves that are possibly specific to android: k9-mail (free open-source email app, that has pinch-zoom! /gmail-rant), beyondpod (for podcasts. worth every penny), xda-dev app, google voice. If rooted: clockworkmod (for modding), Titanium Backup, tasker (again, worth it if you are into automating settings)
iam going to say firts get google music so you can store all your music on there server save a ton of room on your phone
EStrong's file explorer, Watchdog, Dolphine Browser, Dropbox, Google Docs, Moboplayer or maybe even Alarm Clock Xtreme, just to name a few hahaha!
and if you're planning to root your phone, you might consider Titanium Backup and ROM Manager
Greatest move you will make this year!!
You wont regret moving to android! So much better than iOS..
welcome
Welcome to the beautiful (free) world of android!
some apps id recommend are:
- setCPU - this will allow you to set custom clock speeds for your phone (overclock/underclock) this requires root!.
- Id also recommend Dolphin Browser, its just alot quicker than the stock browser, and is very intuitive with gestures etc.
- Jump Desktop! this app is for remote desktop on your android!
- Root Uninstaller - to get rid of those crappy stock system apps! (be careful not to uninstal the important stuff!)
and thats about it, besides maybe a cache cleaner as well, will help keep your sd card from filling up so quick

So basically this post is due to you being too lazy to access your own needs ?!?!?!?
WTF is anyone else going to know about what apps you need ....... its kimnd of highly dependent on your needs and desires and no one one here has any clue about that.
Best NOT to just pile apps onto your phone because assholes on a forum said so (Unless you one of those types who has to try anything suggested by another person like its a pavlovian reaction) , much better to just add new apps as you feel you need them.
Aim being to support what you want and need to do rather than just installing tons of crap for no reason.
I prefer apps like Locale and Tasker as they help me put the Smart in Smartphone.
A collection of Free Apps
Here are some of my recommendations
QuickPic: For images, better than default Gallery. Plus options to hide folders.
MX Player: Video play is smooth and there are multiple apps based on your processor type
Winamp: Select audio by artist/genre etc.
Any.Do: Super cool UI. Does a great job in reminding you of things to do
Mobile Backup II: I flash my device a lot, this helps me keep track of my SMS & Call logs.
By far, GoLauncher is the best Launcher I have seen. If you install GoLauncher, also go for some of the GoWidgets such as GoSwitch & GoWeather.
I agree with QuickPic and GO Launcher, both very good apps. I want to use GoWeather but I've read that it isn't very accurate.

How about upload manager? That's what android really needs. You currently have to use opera to file browse and upload. This worked fine on winmo, I still Dont understand how its not considered a basic feature in android.

So I tried it...
and got some issues...
that browser is good looking and it works fast.
But:
I can't see the multiple language support.
If you want to make it "world wide" you should allow users from outside the U.S. delete/edit Speed dial items to chose from. Let's say (for example) "Mercado Libre" is not as interesting as you might think.
Concerning all of your browsers: the "help buttons" are a joke, can't get any real information here.
Why don't you offer ad free versions of UC Browser and UC Browser mini? I would pay to use them.
You should give a clear statement which user data is collected/forwarded to your servers.
Regards!

Hello, random hero. Thanks for your review.:good:
First I am sorry that I made a mistake because the beta version is only for English, the current version on Google Play and the release version for 9.0 support 7 languages. For the Speed Dial, you can long press on it to remove, and an edit option is put into consideration. Also the websites for Speed Dial recommendation are not very carefully chosen because it's the beta test, it is certain that the official release will make it right.
The content in "Help" may not provide really helpful info for users, as you mentioned, I have reported this to my colleague to make it with more guidance.
For the ad-free version, we will consider it seriously. For the moment, we are not pushing many ads to the browser and it's for sure that user experience is our priority. Thanks again for your feedback.:fingers-crossed:
Hello finally someone to listen for uc browser
Okay
This was the best browser on symbian and having used it for a long time I am way disappointed by the Android version
I have used both the normal and hd version
And here it goes
1) )u guys have an awesome in browser down loader I use this browser for precisely this purpose
One thing that can be added to the downloader is the option of changing links for an active download which stops like we do in loaderdroid download manager
2) the server compression program doesn't work as good as expected for countries like India
3) it displays annoying messages which should be hidden
Like page zoom saved there's no need to display that
4) the pinch to zoom is laggy as compared to any other browser
Talking about the normal version not the tablet one
Yes I mean it as compared to any other browsers and I am on s3 so it cannot be a hardware issue
Pinch to zoom needs to be way more smooth
5) the tablet version does not have any advanced option that used to exist in the symbjan version
So please change this also.....
6) the ui of the normal version is in general laggy
U need to let go of some of the transition effects and stick to faster animations
Rest I believe this browser has the potential to be the best android browser ever even better than chrome if u guys work on it
Right now my choice is naked browser
Feature requests
1) 1click copy paste and go like naked browser and copy all like naked browser
2) link changes for paused downloads like loader DROID download manager
3) porting features from s60v3 versions

About the "upload" function, do you mean something like "Skydrive" on winmo?
To browser files on your device, you can use file manager in UC Browser (Setting-General-Downloads-File Manager), and the official release of UC Browser 9.0 will have UDisk(a free online storage function) so that you can upload and keep your files on the "cloud":fingers-crossed:
Yup and I almost forgot to applaud u guys for the browser stability this is a very stable browser and the download process is far more stable than any other browser be it default or third party this means no page reloads due to lack of ram etc
In terms of stability this is the best browser ever
But ui is laggy in the normal version so not using presently
Tablet version is so fat good will report after trying
Also what happened to the forum mode u guys had on the symbian version single most used feature by me
Reimplement it here
There was another feature which was pre loading pages wherever the word next etc appears and displaying them as continuous pages in the same page
Came in handy when reading or viewing vuclip
Reimplement it on Android
These are the unique features to ur browser u gotta bring it to the table
