[Q] Data sync between Android Phone and Android Tablet - General Questions and Answers

Hi Guys/Gals
I Ave a question regarding sync data between phone and tablet. I have a galaxy s2 and galaxy tab 10.1 and I use them both for work in terms of documents etc.... I use the tablet mainly for working with documents, emails, photos etc... and the phone mostly as a means to access said mentioned data quickly and easily when travelling or on the go when I don't have my tablet to hand.
My question is, would it be possible for both devices to contain the same config with same apps, data profile etc....? What I mean is like a laptop and a desktop having the same user profile same home screen or desktop and then have documents sync'd across both devices maybe using combo of drop box or box.
I know it sounds crazy but I think this will be something that windows 8 will support using windows live id as a profile login and stored in the cloud so when you logon to the upcoming windows phone 8 or a windows 8 tablet and a desktop..... in theory they would all be a replica of each other, a neat concept I think.
Comments or suggestions most welcome.
Thanks

[Q]s Moving from Wm 6.5 to Android, can i still do all this?

Sort of getting forced into an upgrade, as need to get it sorted before 1st feb ( as with T-mobile UK that means 500mb vs 3GB )
Currently got a touch pro2 , had windows phones for over 5 years now. But not really liking win 7 phones, seem very restrictive, and theres not that many good deals about.
But on with my Questions.
1. Does Hotmail sync, so i get instant notifications as new emails arrive?
2. Can i back up all my calander entries and transfer them across?
3. I use opera mobile 10, can i copy my favorites across?
4. Is it possible to copy over my texts and contacts as these are all backup and saved via microsoft myphone
Apps & software
5. sat nav, a biggy, i have used TomTom since my ipaq ppc days, and nothing else, is there something compareable on android? not a data based one , needs to have maps on the SD card, for the UK & cover the rest of europe.
6. an equiverlent free app to midomi ( ie record a 10 second clip of a tune, and display the details of the tune ) that works well.
7. A radio station streamer app, that allows you to enter your own urls, as in .pls links.

I was in the same dilemma as you a few months back. i was a hardcore WM fan, but decided to make the switch to Android. i never looked back. Once you experience android it is like a completely experience. i got a galaxy tab, and kept my tg01 just incase i didn't like android, but now i would definetely let android be my next primary phone. if you want to experience android yourself, try out a ROM for your tp2.
like you, i dislike wp7, it is so restricted. Android is open source there is so much you can do for it.
My next phone will be a android, no doubt, possibly those dual core ones . i suggest waiting till after march when the dual cores are released.
Hope this helps mate

1. Yes you can configure Hotmail with Exchange to have push mail. I've only tried it for a short time and received several times the same message so can't tell you if that was a one-time bug or if it is usual. Anyway you can still configure a reception in POP every 5 minutes.
But you'll have the best of Android experience if you use a Gmail account instead. The push works really nice.
2. You can use Google Sync to transfer all your calendar from WM to Android.
3. Sprite Migrate allows the transfer of bookmarks but I don't remember which browser favorites it transfers.
4. For contacts you can use either Google Sync or Sprite Migrate. For your texts do you mean .doc? Maybe you could transfer them to your PC then to Google Documents and you'll have access to them via GDocs on your phone?
The real bad point in Android is that there is no real Office application like in WM. Documents to Go and Quick Office are either paid applications or not as good as in WM IMO.
5. There are several applications: Google Maps Navigation, Navigon for example. On HTC Desire Z and HD they have included offline maps on the SD card. I don't know for other brands devices.
6. Soundhound is the equivalent. It's free and you can now search for an unimited amount of songs
7. I don't use the radio feature so can't give you much information but I'd be surprised that it doesn't exist. Other people will probably give your more information about that

Would like to wait, but with t-mobile changing there term from the 1st feb, that would only leave me with 3 as a network with a decent data package

No, you CAN get Microsoft office apps on the tab. its just they are not 'official' microsoft branded but they still work. its just that in WM, you get the official mobile version.

No what I meant is that I've tried both Documents To Go and Quick Office and they are less complete than the Office application in WM.
For example in Excel, it doesn't even display graphs. You only have spreadsheets. It's a real lack for me.
Anyother ways of copying my calander entries from win 6.5 to android, other than google sync as i cant get that to do it at all?
Dont think my active sync was ever setup or used, as it wont let me select anything, as no outlook is used??
I'm in that stage right now where my contract expires 2/20 and I'll probably wait a bit for the Atrix. However, I've been searching for these things in Android:
1. Pocket Dictionary / Japanese Language Input - I'm taking Japanese classes, so I use the Japanese SIP where you can use the stylus to draw the furigana characters, etc.
2. Cash Organizer - Apparently they're not releasing an Android version. Any financial software as good as CO?
3. Pocket Player - Anything even close to this? Random visualizations, skinning, library manager?
4. Outlook Tasks APP & SYNC - I use tasks to document everything, whether in the phone, or in the PC, and then just sync everything together with Outlook. Is there a standard task app that could sync with Outlook in the PC? With the categories?
5. G-Alarm - is there an equivalent? random mazes and math problems for snooze?
And let's not forget Spacetime, the HP48GX Emulator, and Pocket Stars!? Maybe it would just be better to start working on WINE for Android
Hey. i've been looking for an android phone that fits my budget right now, wich btw, it's not very high hahaha. i've been offered this HTC touch pro 2 in a really chep price, new and in it's CDMA version. I know i'ts a bit old but it fits my needs. BUT as i said before, i'm looking for an android phone. surfing around the web i've seen a few videos and sites talking about these "ports" that enabale you to have even Android 2.3 on this cellphone.
so, my question is, and i would really apreciate to be answered with simplle words (yes, i'm kind of noob with these smartphones, in fact this would be my first one), Is this possible? after getting my HTC TP2 will i be able to enjoy at least of android 2.2?
thanks in advance
greetings from venezuela ^^
I apologize for any misspelling
HTC HD2! I have a lot of Android SD Builds (Desire HD, Gingerbread,...).All of them work fine on the HD2.

Not without ActiveSync AFAIK... there might be, but I don't know it, and ActiveSync is free and very easy to set up! Set up Activesync, sync your WinMo phone to Outlook, and then either sync your new Android phone to Outlook OR use Google Calendar Sync to sync Outlook to GMail and then sync the Android phone to GMail's calendar. (Don't do both or you'll get duplicate entries!)
Personally I prefer Outlook's calendar (more feature-complete and can handle recurring events better), but I can't deny that it's much easier having your calendar in the cloud, letting the phone sync with it from anywhere, and being able to log in from any PC to check it even if your phone has run out of battery!

Android doesn't have a Tasks (or Notes) function, which is a bit strange seeing as GMail has a Notes applet built in (!), but there's a few apps that add that functionality (some free, some paid-for) and support syncing with Outlook. Have a look on http://www.syncdroid.net/

[Q] Syncing with a Mac

I have a Mac and I have recently gone from my iPhone 4S to my Samsung Galaxy S3. I really love the phons hardware and battery life, the only two things I am having issue with are syncing my phone with iTunes and with iPhoto.
I tried SyncMate but found it just so incredible underwhelming that I wish I had never spent the money on it. I also have recently downloading The Missing Sync but it seems to be only able to sync via WiFi or Bluetooth oweing to the fact that the Mac can't mount the device as a drive. I don't want to root the device, anyone know of any other software solutions that are Mac compatible?
Everything else goes through the cloud for me.
For music use double twist. You can load your play list and everything from itunes. Can't really help with the photo situation

I am really not a fan of Double twist.. I would use iSyncr, it is way less bloated and does the same thing.
There was an article on the internet using Dropbox and some scripting to use iCloud and iTunes syncing. Think it was on cnet.

Why not use Google Music to sync your tunes to the cloud allowing you to access them on your phone?
For photos, dropbox auto uploads photos.
This way you never need to plug your phone into your computer to sync

Because like me he probably has all his photos already synced in iphoto and songs in itunes, so adding to his existing libraries without having to do anything extra would be nice. I did however uploaded a big chunk of my music to google music for access anywhere which is coming in handy especially on my runs during lunch.
I was in the same situation as the op. Coming from iphone4s to sgs3. Doubetwist made the transition super easy for me. Of course, you have to install airsync along with it as the current doubletwist software does not support usb transfer via MTP.

OneNote Mobile

I have a need to be able to share my meeting notes in a corporate environment. S-Note is not very sharable, as it exports to only PDF and a propritery format. I have a need to be able to share notes between my office laptop (win7) and GN10.1, so that it makes it worth to take meeting notes on my gn10.1.
I stumbled across OneNote mobile
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.office.onenote&hl=en
Has anyone used this app extensively? Can you initially create a note from this app and then share it on win7 laptop and resume editing there?
I will definately also try this myself today.. but just looking to see if someone already had a glowing or damning feedback on this app.
try evernote

Okay, onenote can also use cloud sharing to share notes between tablet and office laptop.
Considering I already have onenote installed in my office machine, this may be a better option than evernote.

The official OneNote Mobile app is very limited. It will not allow you to ink on your tablet, and I have had trouble displaying ink/graphics as well. Additionally, I think it only syncs via SkyDrive, and does not cache the pages on your tablet, which means that you have to have an active internet connection to switch between pages or notebooks.
There is a competing OneNote app that is a lot more powerful, but costs $15. (EDIT: To be clear, this app syncs with Microsoft OneNote, but is not made by Microsoft.) I bit the bullet and bought it a week ago, and am very happy with it so far. It allows inking on my GNote, seems to display all pages exactly as they are seen on my PC (well the fonts maybe different, but it displays all pics/ink/text in the right relative size and location), and gives more sync options (Dropbox or SkyDrive or other cloud services or USB sync).
Its called MobileNoter. I bought the SE HD version and am loving it, and have not had any problems with loss of data that some of the reviews mention (be sure to read them!). Here is the link.

Thanks for the tip. seems like a good lead. I will download a trial version and work it out.
$15 is not too much to ask for if it's functional, good and compatible.
I hope microsoft does something about Onenote mobile... improves it
Maybe with win 8 tablets....

I agree that MS should offer a better OneNote mobile client. But maybe OneNote is going to finally be promoted as a flagship offering for windows pcs once the tablets come out?
On that note, and I am probably jinxing myself by writing about it, Lenovo just told me they are going to send me a free Windows 8 powered Thinkpad Tablet 2 to replace the crappy Android Thinkpad Tablet that has been in the shop for the 3rd time in less than a year, for over 2 months now. The rep told me that they can no longer source parts to build the brand-new TPT they promised me, so "would I mind" being upgraded to the Windows 8. I am pretty ecstatic at this possibility, as I have long loved Thinkpad Tablets running Windows but have often found them too costly...
Congrats! Mine is going back in for the 2nd time.

I used MobileNoter before MS released their official Onenote app and liked (like) it more than the Microsoft version. The only problem that I had with it was the need to run a mobilenoter sync app on the PC to sync my pages.

Maybe this is new since you used it- it can now be synced in several ways, including cloud services like Dropbox. I use Dropsync with Dropbox to fully cache my OneNote folder on my GNote, which then syncs both ways via Dropbox to my PC instance of OneNote. Works perfect so far.

Interesting, it may be worth giving it another try. Thanks
I also use Mobilenoter, SE on my Note 1 and HD on the 10.1. I generally create on a laptop and sync using FolderSync and Dropbox as the built-in sync always fails on some of my notebooks and the incremental sync never works (they are several hundred meg in size though)
Other than that I find it fantastic for viewing my notes. Once the Samsung keyboard comes out I'll be trying to create them on the note as well, in fact that is my primary reason for getting the tablet.

I use Onenote mobile and it is reliable and stable. Such a shame it does not handle inking on my 10.1 or it would be perfect. Sync is reliable and quick and my notes are large.
Mobilenoter is good but clunky to use and edit. Sync is very slow and unreliable so I use a separate notebook for inking on yhe go which I sync and use on a desktop and the kmport to my notes.

Must have Apps for business user

Guys,
I recently bought the note 8.0, while my goal was not to take my regular notebook (real one..you know..papers..) with me and use the note 8.0
as the only source for being use during my day. I still have my laptop, but I prefer to be able to take the note 8.0 with me while travelling and not my laptop.
I installed apps which I think it is necessary for business, and of course, I'm using the standard premium suite apps which pre-installed, but...
I would like to hear from you your top 5-10 apps you can leave with, and please...no game (this post will come later ), business app only.
I travelling a lot, and does not have connectivity always, so I need to have offline and online app as well.
Thanks in advanced,

For me:
TeamViewer Pro (yeah...I bought it because I use it all the time...but that's like a several hundred dollar app, but there's a free version)
Office Suite Pro 7
Dropbox and Box
Printer Share
GTasks
ES File Explorer
Those are my main ones.
This is such a great topic for discussion. I use my note 8.0 daily for business and general life stuff.
I stay organised around Evernote and GApps (Browser, Calendar, Drive, GMaiI, Google Docs, Tasks) following The Secret Weapon approach for organizing with Evernote. As for specific apps & Note-centric things....
Evernote with the widget on my home screen.
Note Buddy to launch Evernote when I pull the s-pen out and shutoff the display when I re-dock it.
Pure Calendar Agenda widget for a clean transparent calendar view on my home screen.

It all depends on user specific needs,
for me the most useful combo is Dropbox + Folder sync + EzPdf - all important files I might need go to Dropbox folder on my PC, then after sync I never have to carry printouts with me, and ezpdf allows me to annotate the files if necessary

I have ezPDF and use it a lot. But I'm finding it's easier to import pdfs into LectureNotes for annotation. I hate not being able to erase my ink in exPDF.

Great topic.
Just bought one myself and in same situation. Going to use it for work also. I have found that a combination of Polaris, ezPDF, Officesuite Pro w/font addon, cloud service, & Google Docs works for most things. Evernote w/Skitch is OK but last I knew you have to pay to sync with other accounts so it is limited. Not sure what you do for a living but there are also some cool space design/measuring/dimension calculating apps. I also have business and fraction calculators installed. Of course Lecture Notes.
Probably leaving some out but will post if I think of something.

This is a great thread! I would add to it but basically all of the apps I frequent have already been identified. I would like to use Evernote more but it does not utilize the S Pen.
Can you tell me more about the secret weapon approach to Evernote?
I use Lecture Notes for work. Replaced the many project notebooks I used to have to juggle.
Genius Scan is useful when you need to scan something into your notebook.
Splashtop if you need remote connection to your laptop.
Cloud print to print.
Applock for time or location based locking of applications, so you can lock up the tablet at work, but not have to deal with the hassle of unlocking at home.
Droid48 for those of us who used to have an HP48 calculator.
ESFile explorer for easy access, copy and paste between files on tablet and on network, cloud based files, etc
Mobizen to mirror tablet to computer screen and use keyboard

Take a look at Notes Mobile also. Unfortunately, if you use the developer setting to do all your 2d rendering on the GPU it has a display bug - no fix and they're aware of it, and the same company has a scientific notation app which works correctly.
The up side is it's the best handwriting recognition I've seen on this device. It does substantially better than the onboard stuff does.
Until they fix the bug, I'm sorry to have purchased it but they're getting dinged enough in the Play store for it that I'm optimistic they'll eventually address the issue.

Just Google it, there's an own website for it. Basically it gives you a structure of tags to organize all's your tasks, especially your emails, too, which are kind of a task. Imo it's only useful if you use outlook in Windows to export mails to evernote. If u use Gmail for example the complete structure can also be achieved using labels, which is just another word for tag..

I should have previously let you know that I have already been though all of the TSW videos and I'm setting up Evernote. I live and die by Outlook and I appreciate you pointing me in this direction.

I took some of your recommendations from this thread and wrote an article on it. My business partner just bought a galaxy Note 10.1 and he wanted a list of apps for our restaurant that could help.
Thank you all for the recommendations, I got them from you.

Application Data Sync or Share between 2 devices

Good day to all
Well, just as the title says, that's what I am hoping to do. This is for my church I am doing this btw.
Scenario is this: my pastor has a tablet with an app he generally uses every now and then for certain quotes as he preaches. I'm the I.T guy there, so i have a setup where he can display his tablet on our projector for the congregation to follow. The projector is used, well to display lyrics and scripture throughout the service. The new aim is now to have the song leader view lyrics displayed through the projector that he may not know, especially newly written songs for example plus other things. So now I have a dedicated tablet for use at the pulpit and I have gotten apps setup for displaying purposes, in addition to the app my pastor uses.
Thing is now, he has some bookmarks in it (the app) that he uses to save time when looking for his desired quote. During the song service, he prepares the quotes which he won't be able to do with the new tablet while the song leader has it. The tablet he uses, his personal device, is a samsung galaxy tab 3 and what i got is the fire hd 8 (which is faster and doesn't lock up like that samsung does with apps open).
So I am wondering and hoping if it is possible, to share the data of the app on the samsung with that of the fire hd 8. I came across some things but the device must be rooted which the fire hd 8 is not and I am not sure if it can. What I have not tried yet is the google app sync, came across it some minutes ago (which I am hoping it will do) but I am looking for the best solution for this, without root. My main desire is for the data to be shared speedily. And in case you are wondering, I do have a wifi network setup.
ALSO: Something else that I would like some input on. I want an app that I can use to say, send notes with requests (prayer request for example) or just a note to the tablet at the pulpit. We tend to have it written down and someone will walk to the pulpit to deliver it but I am looking for an app for that. Would like the app to be really fast as far as updating itself with new notes. I am trying evernote but I find it takes too long (at least my from stand point) to resync and what not. There is a notification alert which I don't find efficient especially if the song leader is using the app i setup to view the projector.
Hope my comment isn't too long but I tend to be detailed in things like this. Thanks
