[Q] Rooted Sensation xe - HTC Sensation

Hi all,
Can I still get OTA updates for ICS on my rooted sensation xe ? or should I have to unroot my phone to receive OTA updates ?
Thanks!

Also wondering this.
My phone is not yet rooted because I need to know - assuming the phone is rooted and unlocked - when updating from stock 2.3.3 to ICS (OTA) will this affect the rooting or being unlocked?

From what I've heard, you require an unrooted phone and a completely Stock ROM to successfully install the official updates from HTC. I may be wrong though.

You need a stock ROM, get this via flashing an RUU. I don't know the exact steps but there's been quite a few similar threads where others have outlined what you need to do.

[q] new in android

Hi ,
I own Htc Desire with froyo 2.2 version sense
I wanted months now to root my device but I was afraid of losing warranty, but now I want to do it. But I have some questions
1.In all sites they talk about HBOOT 0.75 OR 0.83 my device have 0.93 version. would be able to do it with unrevoked method or it will crash?
2.Unrevoled methood what exactly does? It keeps the rom you already have but becomes rooted?
3. For being able to have another rom flashed i must do the S-OFF procedure no matter what?
4. In XDA-DEVELOPERS site I see some roms called PRE-ROOTED and ROOTED. What is the difference? and which of the 2 i should flash in my already rooted device?
5.If i decide to do unroot how i can manage to do that?
Sorry for all questions but i am newbie in android
Thank you in advance

[Q] Question about s-off and revolutionary?

Hi All.
Quick question, I have rooted my sensation and s-off'ed, sweet.
Here is me question, what happens if our friends at HTC update the part that made the s-off possible? Will we get the updates or will only the users who did not tinker with the firmware get them?
Cheers folks.
HTC has stated that there new HTC-DEV site will be where you will be able to S-off your device, its not gonna come in an OTA push, IMO revolutionary has got us S-off, so who care what HTC has coming for S-off....its a little late, besides if you S-off with HTC they want to document who is S-offing their devices.......eff em and just enjoy your no strings attached S-off.
Number 1...It is never a good idea to take an OTA on your phone if you have it rooted.
Number 2...OTA's may contain patches to exploits that were used to obtain s-off.
Number 3...OTA's may or may not s-on your phone depending on how the devs obtained s-off in the first place.
Moral of the story is if you want to maintain root never OTA
i own a sensation device
if i use this revolutionary tool to s-off, recovery and root, is it possible to s-on later? (e.g. to give my phone to htc service to be in warranty)
If i just use the ruuxxxxxx.exe for my device to put the official rom , the phone will be s-on again? or is there any other way?
and wht about official OTA updates? how is going to be achieved?
There is a way to to gain s-on again but it's risky atm. Look for the guide in the stickies in the development forum.
You will not get an OTA on a rooted custom ROM.. end of story!!
So enjoy

Yes it is possible to make you device s-on again just be sure to follow everything to the letter and don't screw up. Also why would you want to. If anything permanently root it and stick with that.

You can manually upgrade your Inspire 4G to Gingerbread build 2.36 as it is the latest version that can be rooted. In another way, have you considered to use a custom rom? It offer the latest build 2.50 rooted and unlocked.

Could u plz tell me the difference btween the two ways
and how can i use a custom rom ?
and if i root the gingerbread , will that ables me to unlock the sim card?
Okay, I assume that your phone is fully unlocked (System S-Off, Radio S-Off, SuperCID, rooted). You can check it in bootloader (volume down + power while the phone is off) and see status like "PVT ENG S-OFF" and "CID11111111" which mean that it is fully unlocked. By having these in hand, you can always upgrade into any rom you want, including the official OTA update without losing sim unlock. But beware that you will lose root (superuser) access.
By using custom rom, you will able to maintain all of that, plus features and tweaks that aren't available in the official rom. But you have to dig deep in this forum, learn how to flash rom safely.
You can always revert to stock rom anytime you want, without losing the unlock feature.
p/s: like I said, dig deep, search and read all the guide (in stickies usually) and ask if you got stuck.

[Q] can i instal official HTC/Google updates after rooting?

Simple question: I have upgraded my phone to 2.3.4 and im still on stock rom with no changes. my question is, if i s-off my phone and root it, would i still be able to receive updates with no problem or do i need to s-off it in order to get the updates?
would it be the same with both revolutionary and official HTC unlock tools?
thanks a lot!
you would need to flash the update rom after you root it. Also the htc updates that you find in the settings app won't work. and i recommend using the revolutionary method because htc's way probably takes a number down so if you send it back you'll be identified by that number causing you to pay the full price for the phone again.

thanks but what update rom? i already have 2.3.4 on my device.
also, in the user agreement of the HTC Unlock tool, it actually says that u can still receive FOTA updates after u unlock ur device....
Via the official update you can, but if you've used Revolutionary it's normally advised not to accept updates
After rooting my device using revolutionary, my hboot is not 1.17.111 but it wa 1.18.000 before....How do i update my hboot to 1.18.000 again?!
You can't, but you don't need to - you don't gain anything from being on it
EDIT: Well, that's a lie. You can extract it from the 1.45.401.2 RUU and flash it via adb but you don't NEED to do it

what are the changelogs from 1.17 to 1.18?...
Are updates here similar to that of iOS? IE revolutionary would work on 2.3.3 but if you update to 2.3.4 you'd have to wait for a *new* S-Off, much like how you had to wait for new jailbreaks if you updated firmware for iOS?

I just switched from an iphone also but here's how android works...
Once you root your device, it can't be unrooted unless you manually do it. (imagine your iphone staying jailbroken after itunes updating it)
When rooted the only way to update is by flashing a new rom manually. The OTA (over the air) updates might brick your phone

[Q] Rebrand Desire S with ICS wwe from HTCDEV

Dear all,
I am in the middle of the bridge and don't know where to go...could you please give some help deciding what to do?
I have a Branded Desire S (Vodafone) with v2.3.5 lastest OTA update, and I would like to flash and try the ICS stock WWE from HTCDEV.
The simlock has already been removed, but the thing is can i flash this ICS update? do i need any goldcard or anything of the kind? Will the phone work ok? Or do i have to wait (maybe forever...) for the vodafone update? I reallly would like to unbrand the phone (the vodafone logo and other vodefone apps are really annoying...).
I think if this WWE update will go ok, when i received and warning about any vodafone update (because the serial indicates that this phone is a vodafone one) i have to ignore it and only apply only any WWE updates from HTCDEV, rather than that, i thing phone will work ok... but still i am worried about some things like :
- bricking phone with ICS update;
- some things don't work ok with this update because is a branded phone (i chat with HTC support and they told me that some guy complained about WIFI does not work after the ICS update, ... could it be possible, even if the hardware is the same from branded and unbranded phones?;
- possibility to go back to a 2.3.5 rom if i dont like for whatever reason of the ICS of its behavior on this phone; the HTC guy told me that only on the HTC assistance was possible to make it ... dont we just have to run the correct version of the ROM (by the way i don't know which is mine, could you please tell me? Because i seached on the HTCDEV for the right software number (2.10.168.3) and the file to download is a ".gz" file not a .exe one;
Other thing, does this ICS include a PTG (Portugal) language.
I will be forever grateful for all the help / hints you can give me.:good:
Thx in advance.

From what I've heard, the ics update has bugs, that can only be solved with root access. Flashing the ruu should work fine though, but you won't be able to downgrade without unlocking the bootloader to get root access.
For these reasons I would recommend making your phone s-off (see guides in the "general section), and installing a fixed version of the ics update, or whatever custom rom you want. Then you can still go back to the original state, if you want to.
I read somewhere on my downgrade guide that they have successfully debranded their phone using my guide.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
Ditto to above two comments, read, read and then soff rather than htcdev
Sywepd form my DsereiS
Thx for tips, Will soff erase contacts or apps? For root with soff how to flash su??? Is there any repaired / bugless ics stock?
