[Q] After rsdlite back to stock rom 2.1 , does phone remains rooted ? - Milestone XT720 General

Currently on CM6 , if I plan to flash back to 2.1 , and after the process , does my phone remain rooted ?

Nope. It's back to the way it came from the factory.

So that's mean if I want to flash back to CM6 again later , I got to do the whole complete process again ( from root until install open recovery ) ?

Yes. I personally don't see why people choose to inflict this pain on themselves. The *only* times I would consider flashing an sbf are
Returning phone to Motorola/carrier for service
Soft brick (phone won't boot *AND* you cannot get into OpenRecovery)
Install or remove xt720modsbf
The rest is just stupid, wasteful superstition.

Unless you flash xt720mod, which might be better for cm9. Except for that, I agree that so far, I've never seen any gain from flashing to stock.
Or maybe I'm way out of left field.

So, when for exemple you want to upgrade from cm7.2 to cm9 you simply apply update and wipe ? or do you restore 2.1 nandroid first ?

Just apply update and wipe (sometimes the other way around). Restoring 2.1 nandroid is pointless unless you want to actually use it.

What about this ? If I want to switch from cm6 to cm7 (android 2.3) , I just simply have to flash it over open recovery , and then do the 3 wipes ? There isn't the need to flash to stock before flash to other custom rom ? If I'm going to switch back to cm6 after some moment of "tasting" , still the same , just flash cm6 rom without back to stock ? Thanks =)

Yes. I do this all the time. But I only wipe once.
More specifically, before flashing a "sampling rom":
nandroid > backup > system, data, SD data
factory reset
install sampling rom
To come back
nandroid > restore > all
wipe cache partition
wipe dalvik-cache
SD card utilities > convert to ext4 (or ext3, I prefer ext4)
reboot

Does this mean I can have all data recovered after restore all backup to come back to CM6 ? Including all those apps stored in my ext2 using link2sd ? Wow , that's really sweet , because I just want to "taste" other roms and I'll come back to CM6 after a moment for sure

[Q] How? From Gingerbread back to Froyo (Infused) w/nandroid

What is the proper way to restore a nandroid backup of Infused 1.5.3 (Froyo) from any of the Gingerbread ROMs out there now?
Whenever I try it I end up with a bootloop and have to start from scratch.

I haven't done it yet, but the following should work:
Flash a Froyo kernel
Restore the Nandroid
do NOT reflash whatever ROM was included - Nandroid backs up /system
If that doesn't work, something's broken in CWM.

Ensure that your nandroid is on sd-ext, because I think internal sd gets wiped?
+1, return to stock froyo, then restore nandroid. That should be it.

Ahhh, flashing the Froyo kernel first makes sense. Never did that, Next time I go back I will try that.
This is what I did
-> From GTG's GB V2.0.2, went to stock ( root+3e recovery) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
-> Then install V1.5.3 froyo in CWM. Wipe data/factory reset for safe side. Just the Apps get deleted.. Data on Internal SD is not wiped.

That is the complete opposite result of using a nandroid backup. The purpose of a nandroid backup is to be able to go back to a "frozen point of time" without having to configure everything all over again.

Nexus S 4G Root issues?

I've been playing around with a Nexus S 4G that I have lying around and never used, and I've ran into a few problems, but you've all been helpful. I rooted all my old EVO 4G's without any problem, but the other day I rooted my NS4G using a one click/simple root and downloaded ClockWorkMod etc. But now for some reason It seems like I've almost lost my root? Is that possible? I still have the little unlocked symbol when booting up.
I've searched this forum and Google and haven't found anything, which could possibly be because I don't know what to look for. I've never had this happen :/
Currently running the stock 2.3.7
Nobody? I just need a little help.

Okay lol hold on so just go make sure you
1. Unlocked the bootloader right?
2. Flashed a custom recovery (clockworkmod)?
3. Flashed superuser for root access?
4. Now you have a stock rooted ROM?
If you have/did all that then yeah you could backup your stock rooted ROM, you don't need to back it up but its helpful just incase you mess something you could always restore it to start all over
And you could backup any ROM you install incase you didn't know, just remember when you install different ROMS make sure to do a proper full wipe which includes data/factory reset/wiping DALVIK cache, and formatting system and boot in the "mount" option in CWM. And now I think your good lol

Unlocked Bootloader? If I boot in fastboot it says Unlocked. Is this what you mean?
I have ClockWorkMod, but I haven't done anything with it.
I have superuser from the root
and I was working with a stock ROM the whole time....
I think I'm ok lol
So I'll back up my ROM, and flash a Nightly CM9? And back that up as well? Just perform a factory data reset before doing so, right?

Yeah if it says unlocked your good to go. The super user.zip you first flashed won't be needed once you flash different ROMS, it was only needed for stock because you didn't install a ROM you just unlocked the boot loader and super user just gave you root access that didn't come with stock.
Yeah backup your stock ROM JUST in case you encounter a boot loop so you can just restore and start over, you don't need to back up CM9 that's completely your choice if you want . Its convenient though if you like CM9 but still like to flash other ROMS that way you can just go back if you miss CM9 without doing the whole setup process.
And a full wipe is
Data/factory reset
Then wipe dalvik under "advanced"
Then wipe system and boot under the "mount" option in CWM

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post links to videos or not. But I'm in love with some of the features this guy has on his NS4G
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKdyAm3CgHc
He said it was a nightly etc.
The hidden status bar and bottom menu hidden is amazing. I also like the inverted G-Mail and Facebook. Is this all separate from the Nightly ROM?

[Q] I did something bad in ICS

I thought I could flash a theme to the stock ICS leak. But apparently that doesn't work because it's not de-odexed. Is there a way to de-odex the stock ROM on my phone? If not, is there a way to undo my theme flash (I forgot to make a backup ). Or, can I go back to stock ICS by just flashing the Odin one click ICS leak?
If you're not worried about losing anything try factory reset. Sometimes themes will stick, if it does just flash through Odin and your good to go.

Yeah, I tried the factory reset. It didn't do anything. I'm not worried about losing data though. I have everything backed up with Titanium. So, I can flash directly from Odin without clearing cache, etc through CWM?
Themes do not work on odexed . Period. Flash one of the custom . Deodexed ics roms if u wsnt a theme
If u flash the collective ics rom . You will not loose data or anything. Just download and flash. It will sort out your issue. And give u a good rom check it out here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1548469

I'm a little confused. Do I just flash it in CWM without wiping anything, or do I follow these instructions?
1. Make a nandroid backup, it is always a good idea
2. Have your apps backed-up with titanium
3. Downloadrom, and place onsd card
4. Shutdown, and boot to cwm recovery
5. Wipe data, wipe cache
6. Select mounts/storage, and choose format system
7. Flash rom
8. Fix permissions
9. Reboot.
10. Enjoy

. First thing you should do is a nand backup in recovery (so you have something to go back to if all else fails)
. backup your SD card
. move your nand backup and sd card backup to your computer (that way if your sd gets corrupted you can reformat and push your backups to your device)
. you can also backup your apps + data with something like titanium backup (although now at least in JB if you have chosen this option Google will restore your apps, does not always work for me though so beware)
! Note that Tibu is quite controversial some people love it and swear by it and some people claim that it creates lots of issues, if you decide to use it, only use it to backup/restore user apps and not system apps. I personally use the pro version since it can sync backups to my Box and Dropbox account.
in addition to all of this I backup my sms, call log and custom launcher settings (but that's just me i'm a bit paranoid and I love redundancy)
When you're staying with the same rom you typically don't have to factory reset/clean install (unless of course the dev recommends it), just wipe cache and dalvik in recovery and flash your new rom.zip (don't forget to fastboot flash the boot.img if you're on the latest hboot) in recovery.
If you do not factory reset/clean install you will not loose data fingers-crossed. if you start encountering a lot of weirdness after a dirty flash well you will have to factory reset/clean install. I like to clean install most of the time so that I don't have to try to troubleshoot a bunch of stuff when s**T goes wrong plus it's easier to get support for obvious reasons.
In this particular case Milestone release of AOKP (milestone is a "stable" release and this is the first one) I would ABSOLUTELY do a clean install and I believe Rohan requires it because of kernel changes and the likes.
Hope all this makes sense and I did not forget anything.

That depends on the rom. If you change Addroid versions e.g.
4.2.2->4.4.2 = FULL WIPE
update to a newer release of the same rom / android version e.g. 4.4.2 build 03/31 --> 4.4.2 04/25 = wiping cache + dalvik will work in most cases. Just make a full backup before you flash a new rom.zip

i REALLY suggest making a nandroid backup via recovery instead of backing up just your apps and data. If you brick the installation, phone is fine again in 3 minutes via restoring the nandroid backup. Its fu... easy. Just go to TWRP or CWM or whatever you use and press backup to sd. Thats all. Restore? Just press restore from sd
