Problems with Galaxy S and 3rd party ac adapters!

Yesterday night I was playing with the phone before sleeping. It was charging not with the provided ac adapter, but with the usb-miniusb cable + an aiino usb-ac adapter. Well, the weird thing is that using google maps, the touch/multitouch control was completely f****d up. I mean, it was impossible to pinch-to-zoom, using the zoom buttons worked, but when I used only one finger to move around the map, instead of moving it was zooming randomly in&out without a reason. So I unplugged the cable and it was working perfectly...

It seems your 3rd party ac adaptor is not appropriately grounded so there is a small current on the touchscreen. Capacitive touchscreens recognize minimal changes in currents on the surface. That's why fingers, oranges, organic material work with it, but no stylus or other pens.

Hmm that's an interesting point, I didn't think about that. Do you think I should stop using that charger? Could it damage my device in some way?

I got it with my iPhone 3GS on a car charger too. But it didn't hurt the device at all.
I cannot guarantee this though...

I always used it with my iphone 3g too, and also used my iphone while it was charging...but I never had such an experience on iphone's multitouch...that's really strange!

Since the phone was just newly released, there seemed to be a premium on the chargers described as being for the galaxy s so I went and bought a much cheaper micro usb charger compatible with motorola devices. I figured the contacts would all be the same and all micro usb chargers the same.
Wrong.
As soon as I plugged in that charger, the touch screen was borked. The display was fine but the touch response was shot. If I tap the application drawer in the home screen, it would register a click on some other random spot on the display. The phone was utterly useless while plugged into this charger.
To troubleshoot, I tried mixing it up between the original samsung charger and the generic, resetting etc, and it always came down to the charger. Crap with generic, prefect with original.
TL;DR - not all chargers compatible with samsung galaxy s, borked touch response from generic charger.
Perhaps it would be useful to change the title off this post and move to the accessories forum? Useful for people to add their feedback on generic chargers they've used.

Btw, the charger did charge the phone but I guessed having extra current run through the screen would damage the capacitive sensors.
Compared to the original samsung which has 4 contacts, the micro usb plug on the generic had an extra contact. I tried to open up the plug to see if I could do something about the extra contact but it broke and I the it out.
Shame I didn't think to make a video to share.

Ok I changed the title, now I think to move it the help of a moderator is required...

i have the same problem with my crap charger. but mine won't even charge, it charges up like 1% / 30 minutes and I can't use it while the phone is turned off because it just turns on by itself. crap.

i bought my SGS on ebay and it didn't come with a charger.
the 3rd party charger i bought on ebay doesn't charge the phone and makes it do all sorts of things by itself.
just a warning to others, you may want to spend the extra money on a charger that specifically says it's compatible.

same problem with my desire, with a 3rd party microusb charger .... when i use pinch to zoom the screen goes crazy

Note that if I touch the usb cable ground (outer metal part) with one hand, my touch screen then works.

This is definitely something to do with Capacitive touchscreens.
Similar thing happeend to my ipod touch 3g when I used a 3rd party wall charger on it

How bad is it to our phones ?....
I would like to know what is really happening.
Is the usb charger "ground" at an important voltage relative to earth ground ?
Is it at a variable voltage, which would even more confuse our phone ?
Could we safely ground it, and how ? (connecting the usb ground to earth, maybe via a grounded 220V plug ?) .
I think anyway I will at least mesure the voltage (and maybe leaking current relative to real ground) level of this usb "ground"...
Any electronician to explain how it is normally done in quality chargers ?

I'm not sure what ground here is! My e-bay travel charger 4.7v 500mA with a Samsung logo has no ground connection on the charger - normal in Europe. Problem probably is that it is possibly not a Samsung unit at all - well it only cost 1euro - It does charge and the screen does freeze until I disconnect it. Only got it today - but nothing is getting hot and no other problems so far. The voltage rating is of course less than the standard 5v.

Bought a Belkin Dual USB car charger (1.0A + 0.5A) online. Will report back.

My best shots would be no ground (mass) issues, but:
1. stability of the charger output voltage
2. stability of the charger output current
3. value of the charger output voltage
4. capacity of the filter capacitors in the charger (too little - 50/60 Hz hum is distributed to the output)
5. Is the charger impulse or stabilized?
Capacitive screens must be very sensitive to changes of impedance and if there is no stable voltage or current or if the output is interfered with electrical network hum, the touchscreen may go crazy in my opinion...

Working fine without any capacitive screen issues.
The good thing is it works as charger mode instead of USB. So I assume the 1.0A socket would actually charge faster than USB mode.

It will be high-frequency noise on the DC output voltage of the charger. Chargers use a high-frequency DC-DC converter method and the cheaper ones don't do a very good job of filtering the high frequency out of the DC at the other end. This noise enters your phone and plays havoc with the sensitive circuits in the capacitive touchscreen.
It is nothing to do with grounding of the input side of the power supply; when you ground the output side (the USB plug) with your hand, your body capacitance filters out some/all of the noise.
You could probably filter this out by adding capacitors or whatever but really, the solution is don't buy $1 chargers for your $x00 phone.

Non-Nexus 4 Charger Charging On/Off?

Hi All,
Is anyone having issues with their non-nexus 4 chargers charging on and off? When I plug my phone into my car usb charger (5V/1A), the charging icon flashes on and off; I didn't want to ruin the phone so I unplugged it. I googled it and saw this thead; someone mentioned that the N4 required a 2A charger so I wanted to see the experience here.

I haven't had an issue with the charging going on and off, but I have been having an issue when I'm charging and using the phone with a non-LG charger. If I use the one that came with the phone, all is well... But if I use any other charger like my old one from HTC, the phone heats up real bad and I get horrible thermal throttling. I've tested it a few times, always doing the same thing (looking at XDA) and the LG charger is the only one that plays well with the phone while charging/using.

I just checked with another USB wall charger that I had which puts out only 500mA; that one works fine... so I guess my car charger is broken.

I've been using the charger that came with my nexus one and had no problems. The last couple days I've been charging off my PC because apparently slow charging is better for the battery.

my battery charger stopped working and i need a new one. I read a few review and i'm a bit confuesd, not every chargers with the capability to deliver 1000mAh works with every device. So which one oft them works with the desire s and delivers 1000mAh and not just 500mAh?

just buy a oem wall charger ,, easily found on ebay and also cheap

does it has any difference between 1000 and 500mah chargers? now i'm using original liveview charger with 500mah on it but also have 1A iPhone charger.

Overheating
im using an old S2 charger i think, its got an output of 5V, 0.7 amps and after flashing a costom rom, jellyfirebean im getting serious overheating issues, but only while charging with the phone on.
however i cant confirm this is the chargers problem yet
just a note, its the phone that heats up not the charger

Double that. Overheating can be only caused by the phone itself, or a defected battery (means it is near death, but for serius heating, you will notice like 1hrs of battery life for the phone).
On another note for the topic. I use 3 type of chargers for my phones:
At home my ASUS tab's one (which is rated 5V 1A at the standard USB, plus the extra for the dock, but it is ASUS specific), at work an old ZTE "dumbphone" charger (which is rated 5V 0.75A, and is a high frequency switching type, so really energy-efficient) and for any other my old SE X8's one, which is 5V 650mA (which is also switching type). Also dedicated charger cables, 1 nokia, 1 SE, 1 HTC and 1 ZTE at my car.
The phone's original 5V 1A is NRFB at the box of the phone, but I have a security backup Samsung charger (rated 5V 500mA and pass-trough type, so not really efficient, but stable) which works just fine. The S is not capable (or not enabled just yet) of fast charge mode AFAIK so no really chance for 500mA or more when charging (even when GPS and 3G on, and screen on max, which is aroung 430mA when I last measued it with a service cable).

yeah i can confirm it was the 2 year old htc battery
i am now using 2 anker 1600mah batterys and they last a LOT longer + come with an enternal charger so i always have one charged, it also charges the old htc battery too externally so i can now use 3 battieries mwahahahaa
note i did have to delete battery stats in cwm to recalibrate

Car charger for Samsung Galaxy S4

Has anyone managed to get a car charger for this phone?
I've just tried to charge the phone with my car charger modded to "AC" mode by shorting the middle pins... and the S4 gets nada...
Have they changed the charging mechanics?

Is that what's going on? I was wondering what the heck was wrong with my charger!

Yup, the car charger still charges my old HTC, even with the Samsung cable... so there's definitely something different inside the charger...

I have a 2A usb car charger with generic cable to charge my devices. It's nothing special, but it works with my S4. Hope that helps.

I have a 500mA car charger and it didn't work. Even though it worked on my Xperia Z. I bought a 2A charger from Maplin and it works just fine.

Hmmm will have to look into getting a decent 2A charger then and NOT modifying it...

So I opened up my car charger and un-modded it back to original and it works like a charm now

I've got a 1A Belkin car charger and it seems to overload after a while when charging my gs4.
The green light on it blinks and my phone makes that sound when you plug in the charger.
Takes a while for it to happen but gets more frequent the longer you have it plugged in.
The charger works fine with my gf's nexus 4.

I'm using the Motorola charger (big blue circle). Got it for my Razr Maxx a year or so ago (I've gone through like 4 phones since then) and it works wonderfully. It's the best micro-USB car charger I've ever seen. Coiled cord, huge blue light (but not too bright since it's an ambient-style light), and charges quickly.

Do you use it with the original cable or a generic one? I read that there are some differences in charging amount using also different cables. This SPIGEN Car charger looks very interesting. Thanks!

I have tired a few most only charged at 400-500 m-amps (aka running with gps and screen on discharged it faster then it was charging) with some random picks at fry's i found one that was marked 3 amp charger that whould do 780 m-amps so the phone still makes head way chargeing while being used as GPS
FYI the tool i use to measure says the Samsung charger is 1900 M-amps and my apple ipad charging brink is 1400 just for reference.
tool is Galaxy Charging Current Lite i would link it but the forum will not let me

You can also use elixir 2, the battery stats will give amps while discharging and change when charging. I think it uses the current_now as reference.

I have a 2a usb car charger and I just use the usb cable from the phone. I bought the car charger from best buy.

Different USB cables do pass different current even if using the same charging main. From tests I've done so far, a generic 3 ft USB 2.0 cable I randomly purchased online only allowed around 400 mA. An old Blackberry Torch 9810 cable allowed around 1200 mA. Original cable that came with the S4 allows 1900 mA. These numbers are from using the original wall charger main that came with phone.

I bought an anker car charger and mediabridge charging usb cable and it's a great combo. The images of the anker car charger is different, should be dual usb ports.

I don't know the exact current I'm getting, but from the battery monitor widget app, I'm seeing at least 1amp or higher of positive current.

Your charger may be defective. Usually with voltage irregularities you start getting issues with the digitizer and other components. Try plugging into your computer's USB and see if it still occurs.

i am using Samsung Galaxy Note i face this problem while charging. 2 pin shoe / plug
i solve this problem by changing the polarity of charger i.e by swapping pins/changing pins.

I can confirm this, same problem both with USB and wall charger

Hi guys,
This is a well known problem with capacitive touch screens [Parasitic capacitive coupling effect]
this is due to poor quality of power from electricity grid. Your A/C adapter has nothing to with it
even laptop trackpads are susceptible to this problem[they also use capacitive sensing]
Solution: Remove laptop charger and charge your phone using your data cable. Now you wont have this problem because you are charging from laptop battery.

Find a wall charger that does a better job of filtering your wall power.

I had this problem while using a samsung cable, after changing it to an lg one it worked fine, even with the same charger. I'm sure the one supplied would be fine. Otherwise change the wall charger as others have stated.

Hello, If this is a commonly seen problem in capacitive touch screens then why my other devices [with capacitive screen] are not having the same problem? With the same charger and same power socket?
Also, is there a work around for those who doesn't have a laptop?

It has nothing to do with the touch screen. I assume it is a current/ compatibility issue between the device/ cable and charger. I had problems transferring data with other devices when using specific cables too.
I've noticed that my Samsung 0.7 output amp charger charges the moto g significantly faster than my lg 1.2 amp charger even though both are 5v. It should be able to take up to a 1.5amp current, any higher will be restricted by the device.

I suffer this problem when I connect my moto g to my pc and i use it. The touchscreen gets doesn't response well, but if I connect the phone to the USB-charger the screen works perfect.

S ame in G alaxy Ace 2.

The same happens to me when I use an Apple charger. Any other is allright.
Solution -> use another charger.
