[Q] Sensation xe update clarification - HTC Sensation

Hello ,
I have read many posts , some saying you can get the update if you are rooted/s-off and some say you cant .
I have sensationXE 2.3.4 1.73.707.4 10.58.9035. kernel : 2.6.35.13
I have Done S-off and root , but I did not flash the devise or install any rom still on stock
.
Will It be able to run the ota update when it pops in software update ?
What will have to do to install the update by the OTA file ( any special steps for this case ) ?
I have searched in the forum for this exact situation , I did not find . Please clarify this for me and for others with similar cases
Thank you

u need stock recovery to install ota

If u r still stock 100% but rather s-off, u should be fine. Whenever u receive the update just take the update like it says too, no special instructions. When people say u lose root that means, no superuser, busybox, and so on. U should still keep s-off

You won't get it yet as the initial release is for EU unbranded handsets. Other regions will roll out soon I'd imagine, followed by branded handsets

can i put file on sd ( ota file ) and update from cm recovery .

No, you need stock recovery
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

or download the stock file and install it from sd card

any guide on how to go back to stock recovery?

Ok you said you were stock and all you have done is S-off your Sensation XE and root it. If this is all you have done you still have the stock recovery and you can just download the OTA update file and place it on the root of your SD card. Then boot your Sensation into the boot loader by either taking your battery out or go into settings/power and uncheck the box for fastboot. You have to do either one of these to make sure your device is completely powered down. Next you need to power on your Sensation while holding the volume down button dow. Then use the volume rocker to scroll to recovery and press the power button. Then just follow the on screen instructions to flash the OTA file.if the file does not appear you either do not have the file on the root of your SD card or the file is not properly named. Post back here with your results.

thank you for this info dear sir.
Do u think i should do it this way or
wait for my update notification to pop ( will i be able to install it if am rooted) ?
Thanks again
I pressed my volume down+ turn off -> recovery - > it is titled CLOCKWORKMOD Recovery v5.0.0.8 ??

You are welcome, as far as if you should wait or not that is totally up to you. The only draw back to not waiting really is that you will not have certain apps that your carrier includes in the ROM for their Sensation. Like for example if I flashed it now and did not wait for the OTA update message to pop up on my phone I will not have any of the T-Mobile apps on my Sensation, the only one I care about anyway is the WiFi hotspot app. But I think you see what I am talking about. Plus if you do not wait you will have to S-off your Sensation and write Super CID to your Sensation to flash the available ICS and Sense 3.6 OTA update file. The drawback to waiting is just waiting lol. Well that and the fact that if there is ever another OTA update for your Sensation you will have to flash the correct stock ICS update for your Sensation to get it via OTA and not by downloading it, placing it on the root of your SD card, and then booting into the stock recovery to flash of.

Sorry I just now saw that you had edited your post. If it says CLOCKWORKMOD Recovery v5.0.0.8 then you do not have the stock recovery you have Clockworkmod Recovery wich is a custom recovery. So you will have to flash the stock recovery back to your Sensation before you can flash the ICS and Sense 3.6 OTA update, if it was not so late I would see if I could not put together a Clockworkmod and other custom recovery flashable .zip file so everyone would not have to revert back to stock recovery to flash the OTA update. Anyway to revert back to stock recovery you will need to flash a stock ROM back to your Sensation. And seeing as you are Super CID you can flash any stock ROM you want. Just go to here to download a official stock ROM. All the ROMs in the link are RUU.exe files so you will have to connect your Sensation to your computer via your USB cord and then run the RUU.exe. Once you have flashed the stock ROM you just need to follow my directions from my other post and you should be good to go.

[Q] What happens with root?

Hello XDA members
I was wondering, when the new android sandwich comes out, and you got a rooted and S-off HTC sensation. But not custom rom. What will happen to the root and S-off when you update to the new android sandwich?
Thanks
Want to know too ahehhe
We'll lose root but keep S-OFF I'd imagine
Cool, thanks for the answer
I have perm-rooted my Sensation and i was wondering when the new official update from HTC comes out will i be able to install it automatically like when i was not rooted or because i am S-Off it will not let me?
Thanks
i could be wrong but no you wont be able to perform an ota update. im only saying this because the last ota update failed because the update looks for the stock recovery in order to update the system. seeing that you are rooted i assume you have cwm installed and if this ota update does indeed look for the stock recovery than it will fail. the only way around this is to either instal a stock ruu and lose root or instal the stock recovery and again lose root. either way you are gonna lose root.
Could you give me a link where there is a guide to install the stock recovery?

Depends. If you're just running the original rom which came on your phone but rooted, it should still allow ota updates, but you'll lose root (but keep s-off). If you're on a custom rom you won't receive an ota.
To OP, if you ran an ruu or ota of ice cream sandwich, as eddy says, you'll lose root but remain s-off. That said, a custom ics rom will probably come out weeks/months before an official HTC update
Well, when we got the RUU, we can extract and repack to our rooted ROM
It should be this if i am right ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559

That's true, but we'll see aosp ics roms long before we have sense skinned ones, as cyanogen et al don't need to spend months porting frameworks.

Yes I am running the stock rom so I will receive the pta update. I know that I will lose root in every scenario if I install the stock ROM one way or another.
Thanks.

not entirely true. i was rooted on stock rom when the last ota rolled out. i tried installing it but it failed. i did a lil search here and found a few people mentioned that it failed due to cwm and they also mentioned that you should try flashing back the stock recovery. i tried that and it installed successfully. easy way to get the stock recovery is to instal the correct ruu of your rom. but as we all know it wipes out everything off your phone. i did find this guide which the stigx has asked for (sorry buddy didnt see you there ) which shows you how to extracted the stock recovery off of the ruu and than flash it back to your phone.

But if I need to follow your guide i have to have the OTA update file,w hich haven't comet out yet. What do i Do? It seems so hard to remove root and custom recovery :'(
But thank for your answer !
well the general idea is to get your stock recovery back without losin your data. so really all you need to do is flash your stock recovery reboot your phone and check for updates. if updates are available: system>about phone>check for updates, download the update and install. it shouldnt fail cause you have stock recovery instead of cwm. in short just do the top part of the guide and skip the rest cause you dont have the updates file on your computer.
So if i do step 1-12 I will have normal phone? Just like I started or do i still keep root?
Thank you so much for your hep !

You can also use this software to install the stock recovery. that way you don't loose settings by installing RUU

yes you do 1-12 but you keep root. the only difference is that you will no longer have cwm for flashing, back up, and all other goodies. but once you run the ota and it installs you lose root.
but have a look at the link frederikh just posted. seems alot better than the current method. im reading over it now
Thanks for the answers!
I think i will go with the link frederikh gave me But God bless you Divine! Thank you for your help !

[Q] Help, boot loop here?

I wanted to flash to ARHD 6.3
This is my first time.. I managed to S off.. But then the bootloop began after I flashed PG58IMG.zip via fastboot.
Step 1. To S-OFF your Sensation - (You do not need to do this if you have S-off already or done this before) - WORKING NOW for TMOUS users
Visit
download the application for your operating System. AND EXTRACT IT TO A FOLDER
YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM- Norton is flagging up Revolutionary as a Virus when it isn't
IMPORTANT
Fill out the form under the download links with your OS, Device, Hboot Version and Serial number. This will give your beta key to enable you to S - OFF. Make a note of this.
How To get your Hboot Version - 3 methods below
1. [/url] and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development)
4. With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), plug in your USB cable and select HTC sync mode.(IGNORE any warning messages on your phone telling you it cannot find HTC Sync )
5. Launch revolutionary.exe. It should detect the phone and ask for your beta key. Type it (BE CAREFUL, as its case sensitive) or copy and paste it in.
If Revolutionary fails to find your phone verify you have all the drivers installed, try disk drive mode or charging mode (Linux users can use disk drive mode. Confirmed to be working by others)
6. Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
7. You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF....if it hangs on method 3 and doesn't S-Off. See post 2 below for solutions.
IF REVOLUTIONARY SAYS FAILED YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED. Go back and check hboot using the methods above. some users are told its failed and they still have S off now. If you have S-off your hboot will now be 1.17.1011 and revolutionary will tell you now your device is not supported
8. Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. Type N and install it manually below (the recovery provided is v4.0.1.4 doesn't charge when device is switched off, the one below v5.0.0.1 does charge)
9. Your Device now is S-off.
To install clockwork recovery for the sensation. Follow step 2!
STEP 2. To INSTALL Recovery - v5.0.0.8
1. Download recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation HERE: or Multiupload
2. Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card (The main Folder of your Memory Card)
3. Turn off your phone FUlly and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post above on how to get to hboot screen)
4. Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update"
5. Press Power Off to Reboot back to android after installation is successful (normal screen with homescreen)

good question..
immediately after s off, i boot into my ROM and tried to install busybox and other apps that requires superuser or root but failed and stating that my device was still not rooted..
so i proceed to install a recovery (in this case its ext4 recovery) but failed to find a .zip installer (but managed to find the .apk and .img version but afraid to proceed considering the extension wasn't the same as per guide's PG5...ZIP). so i tried to simply install cwm as per stated in the guide. coz i know after recovery is installed, only then i would be able to install the su zip files.
then it boot looped.. n here we are trying to shoot all of these troubles.. XD
and if my understanding was wrong, pls correct me. thanks!
only after you sent me the links i managed to install ext4 recovery via a much easier method using cmd.exe..
n that also means that i wasn't even able to follow through the supercid part of the guide..

wait a moment, i dont know if things are making more sense to me but, is it possible that this was caused by a wrong firmware? i just figured out my cid and its htc_044 and there are 4 different version of firmware for this cid, so should i try each of it until my phone boots to my original ROM?
Update: Oh God, I'm in such a relief! Thank God it works now. I flashed the firmware 1.17 n now am able to boot back into my ROM. Now i'm gonna get things backed up n will proceed. phew thanks so much for helping me out. The cause was maybe the zip files werent compatible with mine. So i check my cid n mid, n downloaded what might be the original one. so now its fixed..

[Q] Looking for HTC Stock recovery

Hello,
Does anyone have a HTC Stock recovery for Asia TW 1.52.709.3, because during the OTA updete the phone is stuck on the HTC icon and cannot start (just rebooting). A read that there is a possibility that there was a problem with the recovery and I want to revert to the old version. Please help, because I want my phone back and don't know what to do.
P.S. The bootloader is updated now to 1.27
Well I am not sure if the recovery that was with the gingerbread stock ROM is any different from the stock recovery that is with ICS. But here is a download link for the stock recovery.img that was with the stock gingerbread ROM that was on my device. You will have to flash this via fastboot.
Please do as the below post says as I just noe realized the link I posted is not the stock recovery bit 4EXT recovery so I am taking the link down. Sorry guys I will post a new link when I get a chance to upload a stock recovery image.

1 open the ruu on pc wait until it boots u and show u the next button >>go to ur my computer >>c>> users>> ur pc name user >> temp >> see the file with a long charecter created before mins ago inter >>another folder inside >>inter u gonna see adb sord stuff >>> look for rom.zip ... Once u found it ......
2nd change the name to pg58IMG.
Put it in ur sd card root reboot to boot loader and flash it
I supposed u did super wipe before flashing stock rom
it will take 10 mins to complete then viola. .. u r stocked again
If u didn't found the rom.zip just search for it in c. It must be same size of ruu.exe it's the best way to back to stock I've done it 20 times before good luck ; )

[OTA]OTA_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.78.401.2-1.53.401.2_release_258562

Good evening/morning all
Just grabbed this new OTA from my One S so i thought i would make an appearance... And before anyone asks, yes - I am working on a ROM
OTA_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.78.401.2-1.53.401.2
Please note: This OTA takes you from 1.53.401.2 to 1.78.401.2
Change log from the updater service (rather vague):
System enhancment
Enjoy
P.S > Had no time to analyse the actual content but the OTA contains full firmware updates including HBoot & Radio.
Edit: Just noticed paul has done a repack of the base already.. may still come in handy for you devs out there
I knew you would come just like I asked for and others.
Thanks Lee.
If you can work on a T-Mobile ROM/EU ROM.

woohoo !! about time you made an appearance !! I knew you was hanging around here somewhere
missed you since i left the sensation forums
I know this is probably a really stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway...
Can you actually install an OTA package on the phone somehow or is it just useful to take files out of it?
And the other question, my phone doesn't find any OTA updates anymore since I've 'tampered' with it so is there a way to make it find and install the OTA updates again?
Thanks
As long as you are using the correct stock ruu you can apply it via cwm recovery(unlock needed )... to restore full functionality its best to flash the stock RUU

The other thing is that when I try installing the stock RUU it's telling me it's for the wrong device or something like that, although it's definitelly the correct RUU.
Also, my phone is HTCDev unlocked but is still S-ON so if I install the OTA package usign CWM is it going to update the radio and the hboot (I thought it can't do that if you're S-ON)?
Thanks
you dont install it via CWM, you install it via the stock recovery.. of which you will first need to flash..

Ok, maybe I'm not getting this right but I'm talking about two separate things:
Issue 1. My understanding is that I can install the OTA zip package using ClockworkMod, is that correct?
Issue 2. The RUU package won't install on my phone:
i) I have restored via ClockworkMod the nandroid image of the stock ROM (image that I've taken straight after I unlocked the boot loader and flashed a custom recovery, but before I rooted the phone). Then, I flashed the stock recovery image using fastboot. So now my phone should be back to stock.
ii) I then tried to install RUU_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.53.401.2_Radio_0.15.31501S.19_10.12.31501S.06L_release_251412_signed.exe
When I do this, the RUU goes through right up to the step where it says 'Updating signatures' and then it stops saying 'unknown error' and it leaves my phone on that screen with black background and white HTC logo. Then, I have to hard boot and the phone starts up fine but in the state it was before the RUU - not even the user data is missing. To me this means that for some reason it doesn't even try to flash the RUU onto the phone but it stops when checking the signatures - I just can't understand why this is happening...
Can you help?
Thanks
1. No you cannot flash anything official from HTC using CWM, you MUST use stock recovery. You can find stock recovery in the OTA zip file, It will be named recovery.img OR recovery_signed.img
2. Unknown error is hard to diagnose, Normally we get error codes which we can identify as to what the problem is.. Are you running the RUU in fastboot ?

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do I initiate the installation of the OTA zip package using the stock recovery? As I said, I can't actually get it 'over the air' but I've just downloaded the zip package from this thread...
ok put the package on your sd card.
boot into fastboot, flash the stock recovery using the command ''fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'' (or recovery_signed.img) (also no quotes)
when thats done, select recovery from fastboot using volume button..
When you get a red ! press volume UP and power button, That will take you into stock recovery
Then look for the option, install from sd card or something like that
select your OTA package and BOOM !!! job done
Reflash CWM and away you go
Damn... I had no idea that you can actually get into the menu of the stock recovery... It all makes sense now...
me neither till about 3 days ago
I might not seem like a noob,,,,,but deep down i am

2. Unknown error is hard to diagnose, Normally we get error codes which we can identify as to what the problem is.. Are you running the RUU in fastboot ?

I've tried that again and it actually breaks down when it gets to 'Checking Header...' and it exits with 'ERROR [155]: UNKNOWN ERROR". Maybe this is a bit more specific...
this is what i found for error 155
ERROR [155~159]: IMAGE ERROR
One of these error messages will appear when you use the incorrect RUU to update and the image file size is larger than the Flash ROM size. In this case, download the correct RUU version and try again.
Alternatively (in some cases) right click on the file and choose "Run as Administrator".
Or use the rom.zip -> PGXXIMG.zip flashing method.

I dont know if it will fail when flashing the rom.zip in CWM - usually you have to rename it to the model number and flash in fastboot, however you cant do this with S-ON

1. Make sure you have the stock (original) recovery flashed on your device
2. Copy the OTA update.zip package to your device
3. Hold your volume down and power keys until the bootloader starts up
Using the volume keys, navigate down to RECOVERY and press power
You are now in stock recovery mode. Wait a few seconds until the Android with the red exclamation mark above it apears.
4. press vol up + vol down + power to enter the main recovery menu.
5. Navigate down to "apply from phoene storage" text and press power to confirm
6. Navigate to the location where you copied the OTA update.zip package and press power to confirm

put the backup on your phones internal storage and restore it via recovery.
- now you have stock 4.2.2
flash stock recovery (just like you flashed the TWRP)
download the OTA and install it!
- you should have 4.3 with sense 5.5
good luck
I have an S-On and Root. Still in 4.1.1 in X920D. I want to get access to OTA for updates again. Can use a stock backup of Bassie39 for 4.2.2 and then I receive OTA updates? If not, how get stock again and receive OTA? Need make S-OFF for this things?
My backup s are from European x920e doesn't work on x920d. Many people forget to backup system, normally you start with backup of system then try to use custom roms and kernels
Sent from my HTC Butterfly using xda app-developers app

I did not bought this new HTC. I bought it used. And was not I who made the Root. I do not like root, not need it. I just wanted to go back to all original. And get updates via OTA again. I'm on android 4.1.1. I can not find the RUU for X920D version. I found one that is Asia, but mine is Europe. I do not know if I can use. Not even know where to start, this world Root, S-ON, S-off HBOOT, is all new to me.
Thanks for the reply.
One more thing. I'm currently using a version Bassie39 "CWM Backup 4.1.1 European x920e
Backup 4.1.1 "
I try to use "
TWRP Backup 4.2.2 European x920e
Backup 4.2.2" but receive an error of MD5.
Why will not update via OTA? Or is it because you are superuser and ROOT? As I leave without Root?
A fix. I discovered that my HTC X920E is the model, although the box is written that he is x920d. In the back of the unit says it is the PL99300 model, and researching I found out that it means it is a X920E.
Could anyone help me to return it to Stock ROM and get OTA updates again, or how to put a newer Stock ROM that has sense 5?
