T-Mobile to Launch Nexus S clone with TouchWiz - Vibrant 4G
EDIT: Probably a fake picture.
Vibrant 4G looks to be a complete clone of the Nexus S, plus these four things:
http://briefmobile.com/vibrant-4g-front-camera-android-2-3-gingerbread
Vibrant look
4G HSPA+
microSD
Android 2.3 with TouchWiz
Doesn't this feel kind of screwy? At least Nexus S users will have NFC, constant updates straight from Google, and a bare skinned Android 2.3 build. Plus the contour screen.

Ewww, no thanks. Looks like a Vibrant Nexus S bastard child.
Turns out it's probably a fake picture. Check out the updates.

Ugly......super ugly
Believers b3ar fruit with their Nexus S.....
It's not a Nexus S clone with TouchWiz.
It's a T-Mobile Vibrant upgraded with 4G and front cam.
Relax people sheesh.

Yep.
The picture is fake, but about the final product having 2.3 is up in the air. So many damn Samsung rumors ruin the actual release of the phone. Plus, I doubt 2.3 is on the phone.
It takes Samsung approximately 3 months (assuming the rumored release date is right) to make 2.3 while it takes them about 5-6 months to release 2.2 on Galaxy S (original). Yeah, I don't believe it. Also, why have a USA phone get 2.3 before the motherland? I believe Korea got Froyo before everyone else and then after them it was the international Galaxy S.
Of course, I could just be wrong.

Probably just a website just making a fake story to gain hits.
And it was BGR that first reported this, I believe.
Nexus or vibrant 4g?
Hey guys im looking to go from the vibrant 3g to the nexus s or the newly announced vibrant 4g.
I love the ffc. Does the nexus perform ok on video calls over 3g?
Does the nexus have dlna support like all other galaxy s phones?
If anyonr came from the vibrant 3g to the nexus s would you do it again or go for the new vibrant?
Thanks.

First time I've seen Vibrant 4G vs. Nexus S.. but yeah there are a lot of "should i get Nexus S" threads.
I'm just gonna go ahead and say:
What kind of user are you?
1) Do you care about the latest hardware?
In this case.. I WOULD not get either phones and wait for a Dual core. As great as this sounds, there are consequences for this [refer to (2)]
2) Does it bother you not having the newest and latest version of Android?
This is the main reason why I moved from the Vibrant to the Nexus S and will be only making purchases towards Nexus devices in terms of contracts.
With a Nexus device, you are guaranteed updates coming directly from Google itself. Google will open source kernels, drivers, and whatever is necessary for devs. I dont do OTAs but it does help the community out by always having the newest and latest.
In my opinion, latest software > hardware because the latest hardware phones are crippled by custom skins (motoblur, htc sense, etc). Although, I DO like the features TouchWiz brought to the game (power widget on notification bar, video codecs, etc) but the lack of software updates is disgusting including the closed source of the leaks which limited development.
Not to mention, winning the "latest software" war is far more easier than latest hardware. Newer hardware is coming so fast that you can't catch up. For example, Tegra 2 is now starting to release on various phones. But media reports that Tegra 3 will be ready soon... so, whats the point in getting a 1st-gen dual core? Just wait for a 2nd-gen. Sources can be googled regarding this.
3) Vibrant 4G is pretty much a Vibrant, you can add a FFC camera to your Vibrant and it already has Froyo.. so..... and HSPA+ speeds of 21 Mbps is just theoretical, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll hit it. Also, why would you need that high of Mbps? Not that im complaining, but really... we're not downloading torrents or anything here so whats the point? I'll live with my 7.2 Mbps.. not in a rush for higher speeds.
Edit: Sources --
Dual-core processors will be the standard in 2011, and quad-core is coming in the near future.

ARM provided a window into the future of smartphones tonight when they announced the Cortex-A15 MPCore processor. The new design will be used in 32nm and 28nm chips with 1-16 cores, with clock speeds up to 2.5GHz.
Before you get too excited, ARM does not expect these processors to arrive in phones until late 2012. By the time they are available, ARM says to expect five times the performance of the Cortex-A8 CPUs that we find in most current smartphones, at a similar energy footprint.

I know it does. Really I do. But I never have a problem helping on xda. I expect these things here. Qa is a broken record. It could of been ive bricked my phone lol.
Really thanks though.
It would appear 2.3 may be the only reason to get the nexus s right now.
And if the rumors are true and there is a nexus s 4g coming that would suck.
I think ill wait to see the vibrant 4g and how much it changed from the vibrant 3g.

Nexus S 4G is a rumor. The I 9023 (or whatever its going to be called) is possibly just a Nexus S that uses the Super Clear LCD screen rather than Super AMOLED due to shortage(?). And besides, Google owns the name "Nexus," so I seriously doubt Google would do that to their customers.
I don't even get what the hype about Vibrant 4G is.. its a FFC and Froyo. You can apply a FFC to your Vibrant and you already have Froyo.
But... have fun with Samsung's updates if you decide to get a Vibrant 4G
Nexus S is out of Samsung's hands to update.
@Slowz3r: The Vibrant 4G picture is a fake. It's a Vibrant with FFC and Nero v5.1 (or v4?). Status bar has AM/PM, stock Gingerbread does not.

The google updates sounds great. Really does. The vibrant has horrible wait times for updates. The broken gps.
But I do use my phone more for movies, music, and internet than anything else.
You make good points about that.
It sounds more and more as though I may need to wait here.
Those dualcore phones are great looking but they are slready talking triple core.
So it seems in 3mnths anything I buy will be outdated by 10 fold.

Kinda old news. Inspire will release first, and will then be followed by the Moto Atrix and Samsung Infuse.
really? can't be that old of news, seeing as how it hasn't come out yet....but thanks for the input I'll check into those other names you mentioned
Update: IMO, moto atrix looks weak compared to the Samsung infuse, that thing is hot!
EDIT FOR THE MISUNDERSTOOD: when I said the moto atrix looked weak compared to the infusion, noticed I said LOOKED, I was only referring to the design, I felt that samsung's look is smoother thats all, I never took anything away from the processing, and operational features that the atrix so obviously hands down has over the infusion.

Motorola Atrix...weak? Compared to the Infuse? Which is basically a large Captivate stock clocked from factory at 1.2Ghz? And that's a single core processor.
Atrix is dual core, has the ability to be used with docking station, has 1GB of ram.
Weak? Are you sure you're not the fanboy here? On paper, Atrix trumps.
I can't believe someone on this broad would still buy a Samsung phone!

I agree, I will never buy a Samsung phone again, ever. In fact, I'll probably go to verizon when my contract is up in a year. Getting pretty tired of AT&T's bullcrap, lies false advertising, and overall ****ty service. Also the way they deal with problems: Bandwidths up this month, lets cut it down. At least verizon does it smartly and limits only the top 5% of people sucking down bandwidth, not the whole network.

The dual core in Atrix is mostly for decoration purposes. Google won't have dual-core support in Android (Phone side) OS in the forseeable future. Only Honeycomb has dual-core support but that's not coming down to phones anytime soon.

While Android will be missing dual core support, the "webtop" is a full Linux OS, and as such will be able to make good use of a dual core CPU, especially since Android (the phone) will also be running simultaneously.

I've been wondering this, what exactly IS webtop? If you watch the vids on the AT&T site it just shows people smiling and using them. Not actually what it looks like. It's incredibly frustrating.

Yes, purposely built and designed native apps can take advantage of dual core. But for day to day functions and almost all the APPs you use on the phone, dual-core is not supported. So, still, it is a descoretive item, not very useful for the life span of your current phone.

So I'm done with the sensation, all the "remove all sense, add fast in topic title" devs (no offence, but I personally think there's too many of this already).
I'm now thinking of getting a Gal Nex, only because of the AOSP development over there. but I am a little worried it might be slower than my sensation (1.5ghz vs 1.2, anyone? and the gpu?)

As above poster said, it's a "side-grade" rather than an upgrade. It's most likely that cpu doesn't make that much noticable difference: 1.2 should be enough to run contemporary apps (they're usually designed to be compatible with slower phones, hence why iPhone can get away with underclocking for instance), especially since you don't game. Ditto for the GPU. This should also lead to better battery life - along with having a more powerful battery, of course.
That said, there are a lot of quirks with the Nexus itself (and, to some extent, Samsung's handling of it). Camera, MTP USB protocol only, nonremovable SD card, question of whether car dock will ever be made. Make sure you research and are happy with all of them before buying.
It's been a few months, so the Nexus should be getting pretty cheap. I would get it for at most $600 U.S. Price promotions often come out here, though I'm not sure about in your geographical location.
I assume you know about the alternatives showcased in MWC that are coming out in a few months. Huawei Ascend D (the "fastest phone") is rumored to come with stock ICS for example. Galaxy Nexus is still probably the best bet right now for longer term dev support, however.

There are some amaizing development on diffrent kernels on the GN. So with a costum kernel you will brobably not feel like it´s going slower atleast...
Well, the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone, so is all of the Galaxy lines and it's variants.
But it is rumored that the S3 will come out within 6 months. If you have patience wait for that
If not go with the Galaxy Nexus, or Galaxy S2.
Personally an Infuse 4g User (Variant of the S2).
I really wouldnt get the Nexus and go for the S2 or wait a month or two for the Htc one X and im sure there will be AOSP roms for it soon
The one X looks like a beast even with the htc sense on it
The Galaxy Nexus is an awesome buy, the trouble with always waiting is that you end up buying nothing
As said its a side grade, but you get the benefit of quick novelty updates. Personally I would wait for A15 cored phones instead.
$1 gets you a reply
And this is why I bought my Nexus before MWC ...

YES YES YES, nexus ALWAYS gets support from google no matter what, for about 2 years. The one thing I have witnessed with android is horrible support and update timelines for every phone other than the nexus line. Plus if you're not happy, the nexus always has a rather big dev community

Would you still pick up the One S with the dual core, and smaller lower res screen?
What provider will receive the One XL?
my guess is the XL will go to ATT and i dont think the One S will by pegged as the G4x. The HTC One line of phone will be a flagship so it wouldnt make sense to change the name of a flagship phone on initial release
The One S isnt that different from the Amaze 4G and is still a better choice with a bigger battery and sd card slot
The same goes for the SGSII and the SGSII Blaze
Now if the LG G4x comes to T-Mobile, then that phone is definitely worth considering even thou LG/nVidia dont have a good developer reputation

Definitely, just like this phone, it came as crap but the dev's on XDA fixed it all up.
I think I will still pick one up. I might actually stalk the forums before I do though.

What really impressed me with the One series phones was the video/picture capabilities. And now that HTC is helping out the dev community with offering a way to unlock the bootloaders and releasing their source code so devs can work their magic with less headache. So looks like HTC will be my next choice when my upgrade is available. I mean why wouldn't the dev be strong for their devices?! It was a great decision for HTC to support dev, this will only increase sells of their phones! They understand we nerds! Lol

Didn't the G2x also have locked bootloader?
Those specs are beastly. I wouldn't mind stock version for a bit till the debate figure out something.

No. LG has an unlocked bootloader policy.

No, bootloader was open on the G2x. That's why it was so easy to flash CWM, NVFlash took like 2 minutes.
But on the O4x it's going to be locked and probably for the foreseeable future. Maybe devs can crack it, or maybe they can't.
The specs are amazing no doubt. But how long will it last? I would imagine the upcoming SGSIII will out spec it. The G2x was king in specs for only such a short time, I can see the same thing happening for the upcoming O4x.
I love LG's build quality, I've enjoyed it on the G2x a lot actually. But they hate giving source, and now that they're locking the bootloader it's just going to be too much of a head ache for us phone junkies who like to mod it.

Having a dual core isn't a bad thing when it will be the fastest processor available on the market.
Yes a dual core is faster than a quad core, architecture makes a huge difference. Stop comparing number of cores and frequency and actually look up information. The Snapdragon S4 is faster than the Tegra 3 Quad Core.

my guess is the XL will go to ATT and i dont think the One S will by pegged as the G4x.

According to the rumors the XL is the one that ATT will be getting because it will only have the dual core prossessor. From all the tests and articles the only upside that one will have over the TMo One S is the bigger screen size..
The HTC One S will still be called the One S with Tmo that's for sure but does have some similar but better specs than the Amaze.. first of all the thickness is way thinner and even though the processor is still a 1.5 dual core its suppose to be way more efficient.. the camera is suppose to be improved from the Amazes camera also even though that camera was awesome..overall I'm sure its more improved than what words can say but I don't think people would go too wrong with getting the Amaze since it should be going for a bargain once the One S comes out..
The Galaxy S II compared to the Galaxy S Blaze though will be a bit different..first of all it was strange that they created the Blaze as part of the Galaxy S line and not the II series but there is a major difference in screen size from 3.97 of the Blaze and the SGSII is a ton bigger at 4.5 inches.. both are suppose to have the 1.5 dual core possessor but the Blaze will be more of a lower end phone.. Ive seen too many issues with all of the Galaxy S phones so personally i wouldn't ever buy a Samsung over a HTC by any means.. Samsung makes great TVs but kind of crappy cell phones.. and that's coming from someone that has been working in the industry for the better part of 12 years now.. Ive seen quite a bit..
HTC will let you unlock it through their tool I'm sure, they just don't want us having S-OFF.

Qualcomm and nvidia have been always on the closed source side. And in closed source sense it means you have to buy a MOQ from them and sign NDA blah blah to get your hands on the datasheet. That's what AdamOutler was talking about (that dude wants to know which pin on the SoC does what ), not about HTC won't unlock the phone or release source code for the part that is open source (kernel). GPU driver is another issue as for nvidia and qualcomm it's propriety but qualcomm released their binary usermode driver for ICS. So all is fine, really.

Yea, I'm not sure why he seemed to single out HTC, as many phones and tablets have been, are, and will be built around Qualcomm and Nvidia chips. Taking his comment literally, one would think HTC developed it's own technology which it planned to keep secret. Taking into account the fact that other manufacturers will surly use the same, or similar, processors from these companies, why is he pointing the finger only at HTC?
And not to sound like an ass, but in his car analogy, you bore a cylinder, not a piston...
I posted this in the One X forums and have no replies and 63 views. I hope you guys can help me with my dilemma. I bought the Inspire off contract at the end of Feb last year and loved it. Qualified for my upgrade in Dec and upgraded to the Vivid near the end of Jan and love it. The One X is the phone I am wanting. That being said I've only used Snapdragon processors and stuck with HTC. Internally, the AT&T version is identical to the Vivid, minus the S4 processor. I will be selling my Inspire to help get this phone, as I have to pay full price whichever route I go. I will have the full price for either device next month and would like to know which I should get? I am really not concerned with LTE as my area won't have for at least another year and I'm always on WiFi. The T3X I can get for $670, the AT&T S4X I will be able to get for $550. Rooting does not concern me at this point, my Inspire is rooted and my Vivid is still locked and stock. Can you please help me with this decision? I don't want to have buyers remorse later this year. I look forward to hearing your opinions.

If you live in a Lte area or upcoming Lte area, this decision should
be a no-brainer imo. I personally would take the s4 soc over the tegra3.
s4x > t3x imho

Nope, live outside of Memphis. They won't get LTE for at least another year, and we will get it prolly another year after that. I'm mostly on WiFi on my LTE capable Vivid.

So, regardless of being only on WiFi, you all would say still get the S4X? Cause I'm thinking the S4X will give me better battery life than the Vivid and the T3X combined. Not to mention the fact it will be cheaper than the T3X.

I think you just answered your own question.
I say go with the S4 version since it will be cheaper. A lot of people will use their AT&T upgrade on the phone just to flip it on Ebay for a profit. You will be able to get the S4 version of the One X for under 500.00.

Lol... Just wait for the at&t version. From what I've read, the one XL
has rock solid battery life with Lte. Hopefully that statement is true.
I think it comes down to how much you value developer support. The One X looks like it will have solid third party developer support, and while I suspect the One XL on AT&T will also have decent support, the international versions of phones usually have significantly stronger developer support.
So, if you were to go with the One XL from AT&T, you'd be trading that extra level of dev support for a lower price, valid warranty, higher performance*, probably better battery life, and LTE (where available).
If support for the One X/XL is anything like the support for the Galaxy S/Captivate, I'd say holding out for the AT&T release of the One XL would be well worth it.
*On most benchmarks.

Yup. Was going to pick one up on ebay a couple of days ago because
of that, but I decided I prioritize Lte and the s4 chip more.
It will have ****ty bloat and the logo but I'm cool with that. (It will get
removed ). You're in a no-lose situation if you decide to pick up the
one x or one xl.

Coming from an Inspire prior to the Vivid, I do value XDA developer support. However, without S-Off I refuse to root my Vivid. However, we are real close to that now. Short term, I don't mind running the phone stock, as that's what I did with my Inspire and now Vivid. I just waited til Thanksgiving to root my Inspire. Once the S-Off process for the Vivid is out, I will finally root it. So, I don't mind using the S4X stock until S-Off, if it ever is, achieved.

The Vivid's S-OFF process will require HTCDev Unlock to work, but with S-OFF you can conveniently change the **UNLOCKED** flag to **LOCKED**.

Um, no. That is not how multi-core processors work. Seems like you've fallen for marketing gimmickry, instead of actual facts. Few apps, if any are optimized to take advantage of 4 cores, so the only benefit you see is in running processes in the background, switching between tasks, and the like.
If you look at the benchmark comparisons, the S4 beats Tegra 3 in most of them. Some will argue that Tegra 3 wins in some benchmarks, so the difference is probably marginal, either way. But S4 may win for battery life, and Tegra 3 is also having lots of issues on the One X (as you mentioned).

I have the international One X. If I had a choice, I'd go with S4 over Teg3. It's a much more modern and efficient chip and from benchmarks performs almost equally. Battery life on the One X so far is pretty terrifying where the One S with the S4 chip seems to fare much better (but it doesn't have a mammoth display either). The international One X is also experiencing some bizarre graphics and performance issues which are probably Teg3 related as the Asus Prime had similar issues until it received a couple of updates. Since LTE is now integrated in to the SoC the One XL should probably have the best battery life of any LTE device currently available.

The Snapdragon S4 which is a Cortex A15 level SOC and a new micro architecture is more powerful. In most tasks the Snapdragon S4 will be the faster of the two. And in quite a few head to head tests, the S4 literally destroys The Tegra 3. The Tegra 3 is a Cortex A9. Like comparing a old Core 2 Duo to a Intel Sandy bridge chip.
The one XL with the snapdragon S4 will most likely be the fastest SOC CPU wise probably until next year or late this year other than other phones running that chip. There isn't a Cortex A15 due on the horizon until that time later this year. OMAP 5 will be such a SOC. And even it will probably be only on par with the snapdragon S4 not out gun it. And than you have the Exynos 5250 which is a quad core cortex A15 later this year or next year. But than again Qualcomm has the Snapdragon S4 Pro, a quad-core A15 level chip to match it.
That means the Galaxy S3 will still be most likely running a 32nm-based Cortex A9 Exynos mobile processor, the Exynos 4212. The Exynos A15 based 5250 will not be ready until later this year. There is a slight chance it will make it into the Galaxy S3 but the chances are slim since they have not produced any in any numbers for production and the S3 will be released soon. The Exynos 4212 is similar to the Tegra 3 but with a better GPU.
The iphone 5 will run the A5X a dual core Cortex A9 with a quad core GPU at 32nm. Again, older microarchitecture.
So essentially the Snapdragon S4 will make the One Xl one of the most powerful if not the most powerful smartphone for the foreseeable future. Regardless of the Samsung S3 and the iphone 5 if they run the above mentioned SOC's. Which most likely they will.
Hardware wise the One xl will have few equals. Other than the 16GB of memory, it is a beast.
There are some reports of issues with the One X international version connecting properly to AT&T's HSPA network, despite having the proper band compatibility (850/1900 MHz). Also, Tegra 3 is having some video corruption and other issues.
I too was slightly considering the international version for use on AT&T, due to the increased storage, and potentially more developer support. And also probably better battery life by using HSPA instead of LTE. But the issues with the international version so far have me deciding against it.
I was worried about the 16 gb storage as well until i used the one XL for the few days that I actually had in our offices. Dropbox is so tightly integrated with The OS that you don't even know that you don't have more than 16 GB on the phone that's how integrated it is.
I uploaded a bunch of photos to the gallery and every time I went to the gallery to retrieve them they were instantly they're like the pictures were on the memory the whole time! don't worry you have plenty of space as long as you keep your photos and videos to drop box. and 25gb is plenty

Yes, I'm saying that juopunut S-OFF uses HTCDev unlock as a part of its exploit, you need your bootloader to be unlocked before you can get S-OFF.
