OMG! which one - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So getting a Nexus S 4G and i see there are alot roms so what would be the top 5 i should try

In my experience, every single one is worth running. We're really lucky to have so many talented devs sharing their work with us.
For stability I recommend codename Android or crossbones. Cna is more fully featured, but I couldn't get the market to let me buy apps on it. Ymmv. Crossbones is very stock-like, but everything just plain works and it has never rebooted on me.
If you're after performance mark vis' cm9 with v6 supercharger script is hard to beat. The euroskank cm9 kangs are rather good as well.
Aokp is the top dog feature-wise, gummy nex is a close second. These also have the most themes available if I'm not mistaken.
Congrats on getting one of the best phones around. Don't forget to experiment with all the awesome kernels we have, and remember that all gsm nexus s kernels will work on our 4g model also.
I'd link you but I'm mobile. Good luck and happy flashing!
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk

I've tried them all and AOKP has proved to be the most feature-rich, smooth, and efficient rom for my phone.
It is frequently updated, has cool themes available, and runs fast and smooth. My favorite kernels for this rom are Steve Garon's. I've hit 50+ hrs of battery life with almost 6hrs of screen on time with this combo, with zero reboots or lag.

Ahhh man that's a hard one..
There's just so many to choose from! Lol
Currently I'm trying out vhgomez's LOTA r1 and it's pretty nice but I'm using trebuchet launcher because of the "join with apps" feature that makes the app drawer open up quickly every time, but overall its very nice. But in my experience with the ROMS I've tried I would list MY favorites as
1. AOKP ( feature packed )
2. Codename Android ( stable with awesome mods but keeps it light )
3. Apex ( quickest IMO )
4. Bugless Beast ( super stable with nice noti. toggles )
5. CM9 ( overall nice, stable, couple of nice tweaks )

This isn't in any specific order but here are the ones I recommend...
1) AOKP (Milestone 4)
2) Pete's Bugless Beast
3) CM9 (3.4-current)
4) Slim ICS
5) Codename Android
I have personally tried a CM9 Kang, CNA, and I'm satisfied with Milestone 4. The other ROMs I've heard GREAT things about. The ones I personally tried pack more feature, where as the other 2 focus on minimal features and maximize performance and battery. There are however, many other great ROMs like Gummynex that I haven't mentioned. Try a lot of them. You'll also look into Kernels... Matrix, Eugene's, and my favorite Air Kernel are the recommendations...
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
AOKP (Milestone 4)
Air Kernel (3.45)
OC 1000/100 (Lionheart)
Live OC 105

CM9 nightly 20120310 has the best battery life, is stable with some features, not as many as CodeName, but enough for me.

try this .. miui is the best...
[ROM][4.0.4][MIUI][2.3.2] Oodie pRiMe " rOcket fUeled " | 05/March | Smooth !!

Nuhetri's v3.0.1 has been the best for me. But you might want to try at least 3 to 5 ROMs before you decide which one you like the most.
You can check bedalus work on benchmarking ICS ROMs, it might tip the scale:

Bugless Beast for straight stability, oxygen for stability plus some mods.
I haven't tried to many but those 2 are pretty awesome. I tried CM7 but I didnt like it, it seemed to "loose" if that makes sense lol. But NSCollab is pretty good even though its based off of CM7 it feels like stock and it performs well

And.... as for
ICS ROMs?
Slim ROM is awesome
Vs Nexus S 4G

I would say CNA 1.5.5 and CM9 are two of the most feature rich and stable releases that we have around right now

All ICS ROMs Benchmarked

In your opinion what's the best ROM for nexus s and why?

Right now Oxygen 2.3.2 Workds great for me. But CM7 and NSCollab are also 2 very great Roms. In the end you have to test yourself which Rom fits you best..
for whatever reason, anything CM-based has always run clunky for me on this phone. bugless beast is good, but imo oxygen is your best bet.
i run carbon co2 1.1, which actually runs a lot smoother for me than oxygen despite it just being a themed oxygen mod.
there is no best , everyone has his/her own damands and needs
also , every ROM has its own good point and weak point , all depends on what you want
-------------
for the moment , i like MIUI brainmaster , good UI although kills my battery very fast but i have additional one , so i wouldn't worry about it

Have you tried Trinity TEUV kernel?
I use and recommend Oxygen 2.3.2 with latest SG-11UV kernel. Stable, great battery life (with 200-1100 lazy) and 4600+ Quadrant score fast @ the available 1320MHz

Peter's and Trinity are your best bet with battery life and performance =] you should try another ROM
as for me i run smoothly on a CM kang + THERMITE
thanks for advice, I was using stock with talon kernel, battery was pretty good, but since I brought second battery so i no longer worry about it
Hi There,
Generally there's no "Best Rom"... every rom has its pro & cons as well as its own features ... I suggest you to try a couple of them mentioned on this thread, all of them are really valid, result of great work of many and skilled developers.
To me, KelLMSKing MIUI 2.6.2 ( http://goo.gl/oMIiE ) runs really fast on my phone more then CM7.1 with which I had many problems.
The latest Oxygen release to me is the best. Very fast. Rock solid stable. Great battery life.
It dies nit add anything fancy, just keeps the look and feel of stock.

Yesterday I decided to give oxygen another look and to me it takes too many things out of stock. You can't hold press to change the wall papers, the phone icon in the launcher is not as nice looking as stock, the music app is out dated and it won't update to the new one you have to just have 2 music apps and there was a few other things that bugged me also but those were the top 3 I can think of.

Apex or GummyNex and what kernel combo?

To anyone who has tried both of these roms or just one, what's your opinion on them? Also what kernel combo should I use Matr1x but my phone always has an occasional reboot and I feel it's because of the kernel so which other one's should I try?
bump? help?
I recommend the ROM I'm using it is much better IMO. More features integrated from a lot of other ROMs. For info of my ROM and Kernel just check my signature...

thanks may try but have you tried any of the roms I mentioned?
Gummynex is probably the best rom i have used. Customisable and stable and I feel like the battery life is better. Maybe that's my imagination but it sure feels better.
I also use matr1x and I think the problem you are having with reboots is because of the kernel being undervolted and your phone doesn't like it. Up the voltages by 25mv and that will sort that out.

I tried Gummy. I still like this one over it though

I'm curious to this as well. I'm running Apex 1.0.2 with the Apex launcher since I got the phone a few days ago and love it so far. Good battery life, much faster than stock, haven't found any issues so far. I'm curious as to the comparison to Gummynex and differences from someone who has used both. I'd like to give Apex a few more days before I flash another ROM....
Edit: sorry, followed a google search, just saw this is the Nexus S forum, I have the Galaxy Nexus, but still curious...
I had apex v 1.0.2 and its really nice with matr1x v.17, i personally recomend it!! To see more about this combo check out nexusshacks website.

[Q] Best rom and kernel combo?

Dear Nexus S users,
I tried alot of roms with my NS i9023 but I still haven't found the best rom + kernel combo..
I wanted to know what you think is the best rom or kernel or even both.
right now I use the latest Pixel Rom with Matr1x 19.0 kernel.
It works great but I still think I can get more out of my NS..
Thanks .
Hmm..im just using bugless beast rom..just satisfy even with stock BB kernel
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
Bugless Beast or AOKP are the only ones that seem to work for me without any issues. I've stuck with Simple Kernel since it's pretty close to stock and is the only one that hasn't frozen my phone up(my phone is temperamental apparently). . Best bet is to experiment. Not all phones are the same and results vary, as you can clearly see from my phone!
Thanks guys, I'll try the Bugless Beast
Androxide 2.0 with Trinity kernel works great. The kernel comes with a preset color configuration that has made the whites actually look white. And its great performance wise

GummyNex (4.0.4 - 102)
Matrix Kernel (CFS - 19.0)
Lionheart tweak (1000/100)
Deep Idle (Off - Noop)
So far oxygen with teuv for battery.
Anyone have good rom/kernel suggestions for battery life?

anyway franco kernel is damn fast..
150 hours without reboot dan still fast no lag...

rom recommendations

Hello all, I'm looking for a rom with good combination of stability, performance and battery life for a T mobile Nexus S. I want to update my brother in laws device, currently running an old version of swipers miui. I prefer a rom that everything works so I don't get a call if something goes wrong, (flash it and forget it). I have a EVO LTE and know nothing about the Nexus S. I'd appreciate any suggestions! Thanks
At the moment, I have AOKP Jelly Bean Build 3. I love it!

If your brother in law knows nothing about flashing/rooting and you want to just flash and forget....flash factory images and be done with it. You can keep it rooted also (CWM + SU) or not since he clearly won't care. Just leave it unlocked. That is "flash it and forget it" IMHO.

Try the MIUI ROM , I've tried all the other ROMs and this one blew all the other ones away in terms of speed and peppiness. So far it's the only ROM that's felt like a jelly bean upgrade for me. And i haven't even played around with the kernels or V6 supercharger. Only thing I don't know about yet is its battery life. Haven't really tested that yet.

Yeah you're right, especially with the TNS132 kernel rasbean is a speed demon. Only thing I really don't like about it is the lack of quickreply. I'm learning how to program right now (Though with python not java). Someday I'll be able to add features that I want to otherwise perfect ROMs .
Just be aware that ICS and JB roms as a whole (at least for me) tend to consume more battery. I've been running Oxygen 2.3 (gingerbread) and Trinity TEUV 880 kernel for about 8 months now. Rock-solid performance, battery life - at least 24 hours light usage, 20 medium usage (screen time 30 min-1hr).

I haven't any reboots with any of the top ROM's. They are all great. AOKP, Codename and Blackbean. All run fast enough and smooth enough with all the mods. So I know people hail over Rasbean for it's stability because of less features but I love the features plus get stability. Doesn't seem to make the difference Rasbean fans claim.
Rasbean sounds interesting, where could I find this ROM?
I prefer cm10. T9 dialer, quick reply and themes. All I really need. Decent speed, widgets and lock screen widgets. I'm on my and so far EVERYTHING works!

The best rom for gaming is GamerzRom v3, you can try it also with marmite kernel.
Carbon, Gamers are reported to by the fastest (I've tryed Carbon with Marmite8.5Cm and it's awesome), the latest stable build of SlimBean is stable to withn great batterey and a kernel based on Marmite, I'm curently on XenonHD v9 with Marmite non CM because I love the built in intd scripts that cantbe changed imediatly (like 3g speed hack for example), but if you're new to Nexus S and the flashing stuf I recomend Carbon as it has a good amount of features without being to intrusive on rom settings that could damadge your experience with IT. hAppy Flashing!
Yep, I would recommend Carbon with the Kernel it comes with, or try with Marmite kernel too. Blazing fast, easy to use, lots of features. But in any case just feel free to look into the Dev section and see how many ROMs you can find there. Have fun
I tried all of above roms, they are speedy once you fresh install them. After you install few 10 apps, they become significantly less speedy.
As for gaming they are not much different than any other 4.2.2 rom. Carbon stock kernels gpu performance wasn't great for me, not to mention its was quite unstable (don't know how is with newer releases).
Gamerz rom usually scored on antutu around 1500-1600, which is pretty much the same as Cyanogenmod 10.1, but CM10.1 is almost bug free.
So if i can recommend you a good rom, id say try CM10.1, its speed matches above roms, stability is awesome. And if you want extra juice, flash kernel marmite 8.* over it, and Brainmasters tweaks.
Thanks!
Thanks ppl! I appreciate it! I will Go for Carbon Rom and Marmite Kernel cz almost everyone praises it! as for CM, I will check it out later!
I use rasbeanjelly !!! The best for me
I tried the CM 10.1 RC1 and after 4 days it started to be unbelievably slow... I'm downgrading to CM 9.1 because JB seems to be really slow after a while on my phone....
No wonder..
For Android 4.+ you need to reduce number of apps which always run in memory, like Facebook, Whatsapp, Skype etc. Or use Greenify to make them hibernate when phone is in sleep. Thats the only way which low mem device like ours runs 4.0+ versions normally.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
Ok, I'm giving a try to this app.
Thanks!
Try the Greenify app for memory issues, it does wonders.
Rasjellybean + matr1x = performance + rock solid stability at 1320ghz overclock my cousin and I both own a Nexus S and not a single reboot after 2 months. However I left that Rom for hellybean because of all the feature at the cost of stability at high OC, I don't know about you guys but marmite doesn't seem to like my device and gamerz ROM performance isn't that good
