Question AT&T's phones and services. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Im going to leave sprint and go to AT&T. Now Im new to AT&Ts phones, and I was wondering a few things.
1. How are the speeds in general? With sprint I'll usually pull only .500-.700 mb under 3g but 4g is 5+mb in a good area. Usually I cant get 4g though.
2. Im unsure on their phones, so which phone is the top contender now? Anything new coming out soon that I should wait for?
Thanks guys.

I get an average of maybe 5MB/s on HSPA+ (AT&T's enhanced 3G or socalled 4G network) and an average of 30MB/s-50MB/s on LTE...It's crazy. I'll post screenshots.

And as of right now, The 2 big contenders are the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket (Around $150-200) and the Samsung Galaxy Note ($300) which are co-existing with eachother and have the same Processer and RAM etc, but the Note has a HUGE (maybe even too big for you) 5.3" S-AMOLED 1280x800 display and the skyrocket has a 4.5" S-AMOLED PLUS 800x480 display.

thanks. I seen the note yesterday. lol Not bad for a womens purse, but not for a pocket.
Also we can still root these right? Nothing different from any other android, super user, wireless tether etc

Not at all, although you need to root and freeze an app called tethermanager.apk to tether, or just install a custom ROM. What phone do you come from anyway?

yeah how hard is the rooting? Im coming from the htc evo. Which IMO and others opinion is still a pretty strong contender.

what about the htc one x? Seems like you CANT remove the battery on this one.. Both cool, and unsettling.. What if the battery ****s the bed?

Pretty simple to root with the easy guides around here.

Coming from the evo, the biggest thing you should think about is the availability of roms. It's not the communities fault but the lack of leaks and Samsung support.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

I havent looked around yet on here or any other AT&T phone's availability of roms. So based on that, there isnt much for the samsung phones Im guessing. The HTC one x might be where its at then.

I came from Sprint 3 weeks ago and purchased a skyrocket. I have the 5 gig plan and have no problem keeping under cap. Ive only used 1200mb. Just make sure you always use wifi when possible and dont always download huge files.
You never have to worry about roaming indoors and slow slow speed and ping

Okay, thanks man. Yeah I dont need 5gb of data, but it would be nice. Just more than I wanted to spend. Id like to keep my bill around the same price now.

Go for 2 gig... And if you are coming from sprint, you are gonna see a major speed increase.

I can get the 3gb from AT&T or 4gb from verizon.
They work out to be the same price give or take a few bucks. And generally, they have the same speeds.. right?

I had verizon for 7 years and had to get rid of it because I had no signal. It was good back in my hometown but I moved and had to start traveling for work and then it sucked. At&t is faster and has better coverage areas for me and I travel a lot.

Depending the time of day I can pull 5-10mb on just 4g. LTE isn't available here yet. I've seen some LTE hit 30-50+ easy without breaking a sweat
Go with the Skyrocket or Note. The Note may be a little too large for you(or anyone....)

I hear that and then I hear verizon is great. I knwo in my area of DC metro area, its pretty good. But AT&T boasts they have better speeds

All I can offer you is, for me, At&t is faster and has better coverage in the areas I travel through. Which is a lot of back and forth from Pensacola, FL to New Orleans. I also frequently drive up to northwest PA and at&t works much better than my verizon did. Like I said I had verizon for a lot of years and now at&t for the last 2 years.

Thanks for your honest review. I think two guys at work have both verizon and one has AT&T. I'll see what their data speeds are.

With HSPA+, I get between 2-7 down. Can't speak for LTE, don't have it where I live. I think you'll be glad coming from Sprint

Yes, I would ask them how their signal is throughout the day and their speeds since they live where you do, and that would be the most accurate feedback you could receive.

AT&T 3G VS T-Mobile 3G (Funny/True story)!

I was at the mall earlier with my buddy and he wanted to go to the T-Mobile store and ask a few questions.... I ended up talking to the store owner about random Android/Cell phone bs.
He pulled out a Nexus S (Unrooted/No ROM) and was explaining how T-Mobile 3G was so amazing. So he showed me his SpeedTest app results and they were around 1.44 down and he had one test that hit 2.15 I think.
So I downloaded the Speedtest app on my AT&T Samsung Captivate (Rooted/Serendipity 2.0) and tested. I got 2.23 and my upload annihilated his (don't remember number but it was high.)
He was speechless. Lol!
Yeah.....as long as you live in one of the locations deemed worthy of 3g by at&t. Sadly their promise of 3g here by the end of the year was yet another empty one.

You try hitting them up for a microcell? I have heard if some getting them to give them one due to poor service.
I'm actually sick of people complaining about att speeds since everyone is talking about 4G this 4G that. I know topic says 3G but still lol...
ATT gets 4.2-5Mbps down in my area and 1.7Mbps up. No other carrier I've seen here has been close sprint vzw etc get 100KBps... tops no higher.
Look at sprint's 4G its as fast as ATT's 3G. Vzw laptops only atm. TMo who has even heard of them in my area... they r big in Texas I know but nation wide??? I give props to tmo for using gsm like att so I know their speeds got to be up to par but I look at coverage maps and say really??
But anyway that's just my 2cents I pay for 10Mbps cable and my phone beats my computers speed tests... its sad that att wireless speeds are faster then our cable provider in my area...

In fact, the only people who don't have 3g are the tmob customers...which is funny because the tmobile employees all around here wear "america's largest 4g" shirts. HA!

Nice!!! Must be happy, haha
Is there a specific AT&T group where I can request a femtocell? I tried at the local store and with the marketing dept, and they both said no. I have 6 AT&T phones -- 4 on a family plan and 2 more on corporate contracts. There is no signal at my house -- in a low area with only 1 tower in town. I can get 3G if I drive about 1.5 miles, but cannot keep a call connected at home. Seems like I would be a perfect customer for a femtocell, but I must not be talking to the right people. Without a signal solution, I am definitely going to try another carrier.

HSUPA a problem?

I don't recall how I dug this up but I ended up on the xda captivate forum reading a thread about how HSUPA is disabled on the captivate. some people were saying that only the iphone had it enabled. Part of it sounded like conspiracy theory fud and some of it sounded reasonable but I didn't understand it.
HSUPA is related to upload speed, yes?
anyone knowledgable on the subject matter care to explain this to me?

Yes, HSUPA is related to upload speed, and HSDPA is related to your download speed. Together they make up the HSPA network, which has max speeds on AT&T of 7.2Mbps for downloads, and 5.6Mbps for uploads. You are also correct about AT&T disabling HSUPA on the Samsung Captivate, and almost any other phone they released last year not called an iPhone 4. Nobody knows the real reason behind why this happened, I assume it must be some part of the agreement they had in place with Apple, but now that this is over I highly doubt you'll see any phones that are locked out like that again. AT&T is very excited about the launch of the Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G, for them to disable these devices at this point would be silly at best.
everything you said makes perfect sense but i am not put at ease by the fact that AT&T would do this in the first place combined with what we are seeing currently in all the reviews. and i'm not talking about not getting 4g speeds. that's been discussed to death... fine... but weren't all the reviewers getting poor upload speeds too? (i actually don't recall exactly)
Except for the fact that every speed test done on this phone so far has been awful, and the iphone4 blows it away on both download and upload.
I'm gonna get it, and do a speed test with the two sitting next to each other. If I get much higher speeds on the iphone, the inspire is going right back.
I own the captivate and stock the upload was crippled. At first I didn't think that this was a big deal until I learned that upload speed directly relate to dl speeds. It has something to do with that your upload can get clogged and prevent download until it is cleared. But soon after I got the phone the devs released huspa enabled roms and now I get around 3000 down and 1800 up so my thinking is that even if att cripples the inspire which I think is unlikely seeing how they are advertising it as their first 4g, we should be able to use a different modem that will enable higher speeds.

It's not just the Inspire, AT&T has disabled HSUPA in every capable smartphone on their network besides the iPhone 4. I wrote an article a couple days ago where I reviewed the upload speeds from Inspire/Atrix 4G from reviews.
http://emuneee.com/2011/02/is-att-disabling-hsupa-on-its-4g-devices/
Noah at TechnoBuffalo does a side by side speed test of the Inspire 4G and iPhone 4. The iPhone consistently had upload speeds of 900+Kbps while the Inspire maxed at 393Kbps.
Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=KgCIF-G1HO8#t=732s
This should be circumvented by flashing a compatible modem from the Desire HD (Telus, which uses the same 3G bands) with HSUPA enabled.
Ughhh I really hoped they wouldn't do this with there new 4g phone..doesn't make sense to me why they would.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
rooted users will have a solution to this but we shouldn't have to put up with it on principle. I personally feel it is illegal to favor one (i)phone and not others. If they did it across the board then i would be upset but at least they are consistent. But they don't cap the iphone. I've been putting this message out at every media outlet I come across... Consumerist, MSNBC, TWiT, ATT facebook and twitter page, ATT forums, etc. i wish we had the community power to post a new thread on their FB and twitter feed about this every single day.

Is that actually a Telus Desire HD or AT&T Inspire hardware/software wise? If it is a Telus Desire, it would have it. The Captivate does to, as long as you are using a Telus, Bell, or Rogers modem. It is AT&T specific to the modem file that prevents HSUPA connections.

Quiet, you!
I worry much more about download than I do upload speeds. Currently the upload speeds on the Inspire are going to be slower than the iP4, but download was the same or better on the Inspire running Speedtest about 6 times. After all of the backhaul work on the network is done I think it's gonna be a different story.

U Need To Sign Zizo79s Petition...

If u bought an Inspire,u need to sign his petition. Forget what all these AT&T apologizers/employees/stockholders/morons say. What AT&T is doing WRONG. How anyone with a whit of common sense could look at ATTs adverts about 4G and upgrades to the system like the completion of "backhaul" & other nonsence, and not see the false advertising,is an ignorant loser. I know I'm furious over ATT crippling the DesireHD,now that its finally on ATT!
Like I said, all u Inspire owners need to go sign.

That is messed up how at&t mutilates their phones. However, I find it ironic all the fuss about at&t's "fake 4g" when the other carriers made the same claims and labelled their stuff 3g when at&t was the one that actually had the closest thing. The tables are turned now is all. I would however sign a petition about mutilation of their phone's in general, not that it would matter. Switching carriers and stating that reason would come closer to getting their attention.

Or do you think you've been had by purchasing the phone? You have 30 days to return it.
Meh... AT&T has certainly taken liberties with their 4G advertising (as have others), but anyone who does any research knows this. As for the handicapping of speed, they are within their rights. It's all in the contract. Personally, I have been pretty happy with the speed. If you're not, there are other companies that will happily take your money.

I agree with the OP said, we all know that their "4G" isnt delpoyed but why asell phones with the 4G sign on them. That isnt the main issue here, the big issue is the fact that if you don't have an iPhone, your chances are that AT&T crippled your upload speeds. This petition is getting a lot of attention (Just google it),
There's a thread on the ATT site that was started a long time ago. "Why is AT&T capping uploads on all non-iphones?" I didn't pay it no mind. Until I bought an Inspire! This is corporate favoritism in the worst way. This is WRONG. It may not be worth squat. But we should ALL sign it. Now.

[Help] Not sure what to do.

I posted this in the general Q&A but got no opinions. Maybe you guys can lend some unbiased help.
So I've gotten myself into a pickle. Let me start this by saying that staying on AT&T is not an option for personal reasons.
Current situation: HTC Inspire 4G with an unlimited data plan on AT&T.
Living in NY metro area with great coverage.
Got the green light from AT&T to cancel my contract with no ETF if I want.
Hopes & Dreams: Have a great phone on a future-proof network (LTE for example) while guaranteeing myself unlimited data.
Obviously I have a lot to weigh here:
AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile.
I feel like this is pure bad news if I were to stay with AT&T or switch to T-Mobile. If I stay AT&T, prices are sure to go up, and sure I keep my unlimited data, but the network is going nowhere fast. 4G is bull****. 3.5G at best. All in all, the real innovation and envelope pushing just isn't happening here.
Verizon's LTE & Tiered Data.
From what I hear, the speeds are gorgeous. I checked and I'm in a hot coverage area. But I also hear indoor coverage sucks, and the LTE > 3G handoff is sloppy and leads to service drops.
Then there's the tiered data. I'm sure if I were to wait too long, I'll miss the boat on unlimited LTE data. Hence the reason I feel I need to make a move soon.
Sprint.
Short & sweet: Is the 4G good? Phone selection ramping up any time soon? What's hot now? The Pre 3 looks amazing, but if it'll be on Verizon, I'm not sure what Sprint may have to lure me in.
MetroPCS.
Just kidding
Anyway, any and all input is appreciated. I'm just not sure where to go and how.
Keep in mind I need to do the carrier change by May 4th.
Thanks!
Sprint 4g is about as fast as my current att phone 300kb/s to 600kb/s at best but indoor penetration well there is none

That is quite a predicament.
I don't know too much, but I'll see if anything I do know helps:
My friend is on Sprint 4G (with the Evo) and his speeds are about what mine are (avg ~2.1 mbps down) in the middle of Indiana, so that says something.
I'm really not a fan of Verizon. Sure their service coverage is better but customer service is just as bad as AT&T and you can't use data and voice at the same time (something I depend on)
Just my input, hope it helps.
Go with Verizon you can use data and voice at the same time at least on the Thunderbolt
Edit: My speed test

I have three friends who purchased the Thunderbolts the day they came out. Two love it, the other hated it and returned it within a week because the battery sucked and it was "buggy". The one that returned it is longtime android users so it wasn't android that was the problem. I personally think the phone is awesome, and you can get a goofy looking extended battery so if the only concern is battery life it isn't really a problem. I am in San Diego and the down and up speeds are literally in the 20mb range every time they speed test those things, makes the 3mb down on the Inspire look pretty shabby.
If I did not have 4 phones all with data plans at varying stages of renewal on my contract I would probably make the switch.
My only question is how in the heck did you get out of your contract?!?!?!
Funny that I see this. I'm more or less in a similar situation. I recently renewed from an out-of-contract state and got the Inspire, but I'm still within my return window.
First, let me say that there's no such thing as a "future-proof" network. Remember that commercial with Ozzy and Justin Bieber? It's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a 5G, then a 6G... and so on.
Furthermore, I just found out there is no industry standard for what constitutes a 'G' anyway. So it gets down to throughput, and how much of it you need for what you do. After that is price and hardware, not necessarily in that order.
I think it all depends on what you need the most. I agree that Verizon's speeds are screaming where you have good signal. But I read an analysis which said that on average AT&T's network is faster in the majority of areas. IOW, if you travel outsize a Verizon 'hot zone', their speed is on a par with, and in some cases slower than, AT&T. So where Verizon has them beat in 'hot spots', overall in daily use for those of us who travel around (or live in a more rural area), AT&T might be the better choice.
Don't kid yourself. Verizon isn't exactly looking to rock the boat pushing bleeding edge technology either. they're not inclined to invest money that they don't have to, or create more customer service issues than they already have. So that "future proof" network you're looking for won't be found at Verizon any more than you'll find it at AT&T.
I have no comment about Sprint or MPCS other than the fact that having traveled all over the country for business over the years, AT&T had the most consistent service for voice (which is my primary need) than even Verizon. Besides, it seems you already answered your own question regarding Sprint or MPCS. If you plan on venturing outside an urbanized inner-city area, you're pretty much screwed. After all... hellooooo... it's METRO pcs, not Pocono pcs.
Let me share with you what I'm inclined to do.
I love the Inspire, but when I saw the HTC Sensation is coming to Tmo, I had a moment of pause (as you did) and thought to return it and wait. But as you noted, with AT&T buying Tmo, there's a lot of 'if' on that plan to jump ship, since there's no saying when the two companies merge that I won't be forced into another phone. Or that the Sensation will get 4G speeds when the networks converge. Or that the bootloader will be cracked so I can install an unbranded ROM. Or that you will be able to use the Tmo phone on the merged network... lots of variables there.
If there's a reason why you just can't stay with AT&T and the Inspire, then I'd say Verizon is your next best choice. But given the Thunderbolt is nearly identical to the Inspire, and Verizon is more expensive for buying the phone ($175 vs. $50), it's your choice on whether the enhanced (but not always faster in all cases and in all places) data speed is worthwhile.
And of course we all need to remember that a contract is only 24 months. It goes quick. Not like it's a tattoo where you're living with it for the rest of your life.
Hope this helps...

You can break your Verizon Contract now..

just saw it on droid life...
so who all are jumping the boat??
YYEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!! FINALL.. oh wait, Im not on Verizon..

I'll be happy to help those folks push off the docks when they're all aboard...
If someone gave me the speed, reliability and quality/coverage for voice VZW did...I'd think about jumping.
Around here...it doesn't exist.

Ya, I hear you on this one. I was with T-Mobile for about 14 years. Got the G1 when it came out, upgraded inbetween and finally ended up with a G2 (I do miss physical keyboards).
Anyways, pretty sad that I had a 4G (term used lightly) and not only couldn't get 4G where I lived, but didn't even have 3G either and was stuck on edge.
So I switched to VZW and I get 3G everywhere (don't have 4G yet where I live).
So finally, I go on a cross country trip from Kansas City to So California (have done this before for vacation). Lo and behold...I was quite impressed with the coverage I had all throughout the trip. 3G virtually everywhere (even in the mountains) and the 4G (Denver, Vegas and Cali) was absolutely wonderful. With T-mobile, most of my trip would have been no data or edge(1x) at best.
The saddest thing is that my 3g speed on VZW is faster than my 4G speed was on T-Mobile.
So like you sad, I would not give up the great coverage to save a few bucks.
This really is quite nice.
Verizon has given me the shaft here and there when it comes to troubleshooting issues I have with service and such, but they have been pretty reliable otherwise.
I kind of think this shows they have faith in their service, at least enough to give people the option of leaving at will.
I have had Verizon for a few months. It's been a good experience so far. Signal is good. Prices are a little higher..... But you get what you pay for.
Was on att for 10 years.

To all those who wish to up and jump ship I say, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. No carrier will make everyone happy, if VZW is not for you, who are we to tell you to stay? Hopefully your next carrier will treat you better. In then end, they all want nothing other than your $$. For me, VZW has provided consistently better service than AT&T.

My thoughts exactly. I just came from AT&T and had a "4G" phone and was LUCKY when I'd get 3G. What a POS company they are and what POS service they have around the country. I've been on VzW for about a month and I've never had less than 3 bars of 3G yet! Plus their LTE is freakin retarded fast. I can deal with their customer support because typically I don't need them for anything.
If you want to go peace out thanks for the extra bandwidth!

Well I am not on Verizon, I have been on Sprint since '97. Thinking of switching cause the service is getting crappy as hell. Data is constantly going in and out. And for the plan I have with 5 phones Verizon isn't that much more. I keep reading about how satisfied folks are with their data coverage.

My advice is to come on over before tiered data kicks in. Sprint was actually my second choice, happy with vzw though.

It's time to jump if you want a chance at keeping unlimited data. Unfortunately only the tech savvy can see that 2GB is not enough going into the future of cloud based services just as 150MB was not enough when data services were just starting to be offered. That said, if you're a heavy data user, VZW seems to have the best network for you.
I have tried all but TMobil over the last 10+ years. Had verizon back in early 2000s . Changed to sprint because verizon service was terrible. Had sprint 2 yrs then ATT or cingular as it was then, 2 yrs then back to sprint. Dumped sprint 2 1/2 yrs ago because of very terrible service areas and customer service really bad. Went back to verizon ( swore i would never do ) and plan on staying quite a while longer. 2 yrs more for the T Bolt . Seems each of these companies over time become too big and gready for their own good . Then the consumer speaks and they loose money. Its a wild ride if we can hold on for it. True verizon is on its too big for its own good ride agian but untill service areas become really bad or prices are for the millionare only, I will stay put for next 2 yrs with my locked in $30.00 unlimited data plan and see what happens.

Ya, I thought about going to Sprint as well, but I just didn't like the fact that they were going to charge me 10 dollars extra a month if I got a 4G phone, even if there was no 4G coverage where I lived.
I'm not sure why anyone would leave Verizon. Coming from Sprint, it's heaven over here.

That's 3g not bad considerng the area didn't haveas good signal
4g without even. Trying at home I get up to 20mbps which is great and even morein some areas and doesn't kill the battery like wimax on my og evo

I was planning on sticking with god awful AT&T but then got the chance to switch to VzW and save money each month so I jumped on that! I too had to pay to get out but ported my numbers and now I actually get signal and I'm not embarassed to say I have a 4G device lol.
P.S. - I'm not knocking the Inspire as I LOVED the actual phone (minus the idiotic camera design).
