I'll be happy to help those folks push off the docks when they're all aboard...
If someone gave me the speed, reliability and quality/coverage for voice VZW did...I'd think about jumping.
Around here...it doesn't exist.

Ya, I hear you on this one. I was with T-Mobile for about 14 years. Got the G1 when it came out, upgraded inbetween and finally ended up with a G2 (I do miss physical keyboards).
Anyways, pretty sad that I had a 4G (term used lightly) and not only couldn't get 4G where I lived, but didn't even have 3G either and was stuck on edge.
So I switched to VZW and I get 3G everywhere (don't have 4G yet where I live).
So finally, I go on a cross country trip from Kansas City to So California (have done this before for vacation). Lo and behold...I was quite impressed with the coverage I had all throughout the trip. 3G virtually everywhere (even in the mountains) and the 4G (Denver, Vegas and Cali) was absolutely wonderful. With T-mobile, most of my trip would have been no data or edge(1x) at best.
The saddest thing is that my 3g speed on VZW is faster than my 4G speed was on T-Mobile.
So like you sad, I would not give up the great coverage to save a few bucks.
This really is quite nice.
Verizon has given me the shaft here and there when it comes to troubleshooting issues I have with service and such, but they have been pretty reliable otherwise.
I kind of think this shows they have faith in their service, at least enough to give people the option of leaving at will.
I have had Verizon for a few months. It's been a good experience so far. Signal is good. Prices are a little higher..... But you get what you pay for.
Was on att for 10 years.

To all those who wish to up and jump ship I say, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. No carrier will make everyone happy, if VZW is not for you, who are we to tell you to stay? Hopefully your next carrier will treat you better. In then end, they all want nothing other than your $$. For me, VZW has provided consistently better service than AT&T.

My thoughts exactly. I just came from AT&T and had a "4G" phone and was LUCKY when I'd get 3G. What a POS company they are and what POS service they have around the country. I've been on VzW for about a month and I've never had less than 3 bars of 3G yet! Plus their LTE is freakin retarded fast. I can deal with their customer support because typically I don't need them for anything.
If you want to go peace out thanks for the extra bandwidth!

Well I am not on Verizon, I have been on Sprint since '97. Thinking of switching cause the service is getting crappy as hell. Data is constantly going in and out. And for the plan I have with 5 phones Verizon isn't that much more. I keep reading about how satisfied folks are with their data coverage.

It's time to jump if you want a chance at keeping unlimited data. Unfortunately only the tech savvy can see that 2GB is not enough going into the future of cloud based services just as 150MB was not enough when data services were just starting to be offered. That said, if you're a heavy data user, VZW seems to have the best network for you.
I have tried all but TMobil over the last 10+ years. Had verizon back in early 2000s . Changed to sprint because verizon service was terrible. Had sprint 2 yrs then ATT or cingular as it was then, 2 yrs then back to sprint. Dumped sprint 2 1/2 yrs ago because of very terrible service areas and customer service really bad. Went back to verizon ( swore i would never do ) and plan on staying quite a while longer. 2 yrs more for the T Bolt . Seems each of these companies over time become too big and gready for their own good . Then the consumer speaks and they loose money. Its a wild ride if we can hold on for it. True verizon is on its too big for its own good ride agian but untill service areas become really bad or prices are for the millionare only, I will stay put for next 2 yrs with my locked in $30.00 unlimited data plan and see what happens.

Ya, I thought about going to Sprint as well, but I just didn't like the fact that they were going to charge me 10 dollars extra a month if I got a 4G phone, even if there was no 4G coverage where I lived.
I'm not sure why anyone would leave Verizon. Coming from Sprint, it's heaven over here.

4g without even. Trying at home I get up to 20mbps which is great and even morein some areas and doesn't kill the battery like wimax on my og evo

I was planning on sticking with god awful AT&T but then got the chance to switch to VzW and save money each month so I jumped on that! I too had to pay to get out but ported my numbers and now I actually get signal and I'm not embarassed to say I have a 4G device lol.
P.S. - I'm not knocking the Inspire as I LOVED the actual phone (minus the idiotic camera design).

CS and Store personal will tell you anything to sell you a phone, I wouldn't hold my breath. It will come in time though. Hopefully the hype of "4g" wasn't the only reason you bought the phone. If it was, you should return now.
i do live in a 4G area but spend most of the week out-of-town on work, sadly in non-4G areas. i'm struggling to decide if i really want the tbolt given that i will only have true LTE access on the weekends. sometimes i feel it would be better to wait until where i am working has 4G as well or i get assigned to 4G area projects. hmm....
You still get to take advantage of the simultaneous data + voice if that sort of thing interests you, I think..
Look at the bright side, you'll be grandfather in if they decide to change to tiered data, when it does finally come to your city.

I thought that too, but the "grandfathering" is only good for your contract term. Please read it when you have a chance. Two VZW managers confirmed this. Will they do it (cut off unlimited-who knows?), but they can if they want to.

Bunch of bull dude. Do you think or do you know? Don't believe everything you read. I been grandfathered on my unlimited talk $45 dollar plan for 8 years. My contract runs out, but nothing changes. When I grab a new phone the reb just starts up a new contract with my grandfathered one.
Also when you're contract runs out, and you don't do anything or upgrade you're phone your plan will continue the same way also. Here old screen shot of my plan I still have.
I have another friend that has a 10 unlimited data plan, and he's had it for 6 years.

The only time you lose a grandfathered plan is when you switch to something that is not the same ability in VZW system. IE: going to "Iphone data" stay on an android and you will have same plan as long as you don't change it.

As a former Alltel/Verizon manager, I'd like to throw my two cents in. Per the letter of the contract, Verizon does have the ability to remove your unlimited data after the contract ends. With that being said, in my 6 years in the industry I have never seen it happen. We had customers on $20/mo unlimited minute plans who had originally signed on with GTE. As long as you don't initiate the change, you're fine.
The only exception (which I think was mentioned earlier), is moving to a different class of device. For example, a data plan for a feature phone won't map over to a new smartphon, etc...
Hope this helps!

where did you buy it from? I told all my customers in portland that 4g is only near the airport and is slowly expanding/being turned on. The vzw account/data manager I spoke with said you can get it 3 miles outside PDX and it is being turned on in other areas.
4g isnt even a buying point for me, I am not in an area and most likely wont get it for another 1-2 years, I will have had at least 4 new phones by then. I bought this bad boy for the potential in it. Its all great hardware and by far the best support from xda over any other company. If the G2 is putting down 100 mflops I cant wait to see what this can do once its all tuned up.

Thats pretty much wrong.
However as HSPA+ does get rolled out in your area you will see dramatic increases in speeds. Currently i get about 3.8m/1.3m which isnt bad by any means, however with full rollout you should speeds around 12m/5m. Not LTE but alot faster current "3G"

someone please complain to FCC about att 4G BS!
Im not arguing the semantics of 4G, im simply stating that with the proper Back haul and HSPA+ upgrades, people will experience faster then current 3G data speeds.
Yes the whole 3g 4g definitions are confusing and this is a direct fault of the telecoms

I mod the att forum at hofo. One time an att Rep said they roam on Verizon towers. Just saying, most reps don't know all that much.
I posted this in the general Q&A but got no opinions. Maybe you guys can lend some unbiased help.
So I've gotten myself into a pickle. Let me start this by saying that staying on AT&T is not an option for personal reasons.
Current situation: HTC Inspire 4G with an unlimited data plan on AT&T.
Living in NY metro area with great coverage.
Got the green light from AT&T to cancel my contract with no ETF if I want.
Hopes & Dreams: Have a great phone on a future-proof network (LTE for example) while guaranteeing myself unlimited data.
Obviously I have a lot to weigh here:
AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile.
I feel like this is pure bad news if I were to stay with AT&T or switch to T-Mobile. If I stay AT&T, prices are sure to go up, and sure I keep my unlimited data, but the network is going nowhere fast. 4G is bull****. 3.5G at best. All in all, the real innovation and envelope pushing just isn't happening here.
Verizon's LTE & Tiered Data.
From what I hear, the speeds are gorgeous. I checked and I'm in a hot coverage area. But I also hear indoor coverage sucks, and the LTE > 3G handoff is sloppy and leads to service drops.
Then there's the tiered data. I'm sure if I were to wait too long, I'll miss the boat on unlimited LTE data. Hence the reason I feel I need to make a move soon.
Sprint.
Short & sweet: Is the 4G good? Phone selection ramping up any time soon? What's hot now? The Pre 3 looks amazing, but if it'll be on Verizon, I'm not sure what Sprint may have to lure me in.
MetroPCS.
Just kidding
Anyway, any and all input is appreciated. I'm just not sure where to go and how.
Keep in mind I need to do the carrier change by May 4th.
Thanks!
Sprint 4g is about as fast as my current att phone 300kb/s to 600kb/s at best but indoor penetration well there is none

That is quite a predicament.
I don't know too much, but I'll see if anything I do know helps:
My friend is on Sprint 4G (with the Evo) and his speeds are about what mine are (avg ~2.1 mbps down) in the middle of Indiana, so that says something.
I'm really not a fan of Verizon. Sure their service coverage is better but customer service is just as bad as AT&T and you can't use data and voice at the same time (something I depend on)
Just my input, hope it helps.
Go with Verizon you can use data and voice at the same time at least on the Thunderbolt
Edit: My speed test

I have three friends who purchased the Thunderbolts the day they came out. Two love it, the other hated it and returned it within a week because the battery sucked and it was "buggy". The one that returned it is longtime android users so it wasn't android that was the problem. I personally think the phone is awesome, and you can get a goofy looking extended battery so if the only concern is battery life it isn't really a problem. I am in San Diego and the down and up speeds are literally in the 20mb range every time they speed test those things, makes the 3mb down on the Inspire look pretty shabby.
If I did not have 4 phones all with data plans at varying stages of renewal on my contract I would probably make the switch.
My only question is how in the heck did you get out of your contract?!?!?!
Funny that I see this. I'm more or less in a similar situation. I recently renewed from an out-of-contract state and got the Inspire, but I'm still within my return window.
First, let me say that there's no such thing as a "future-proof" network. Remember that commercial with Ozzy and Justin Bieber? It's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a 5G, then a 6G... and so on.
Furthermore, I just found out there is no industry standard for what constitutes a 'G' anyway. So it gets down to throughput, and how much of it you need for what you do. After that is price and hardware, not necessarily in that order.
I think it all depends on what you need the most. I agree that Verizon's speeds are screaming where you have good signal. But I read an analysis which said that on average AT&T's network is faster in the majority of areas. IOW, if you travel outsize a Verizon 'hot zone', their speed is on a par with, and in some cases slower than, AT&T. So where Verizon has them beat in 'hot spots', overall in daily use for those of us who travel around (or live in a more rural area), AT&T might be the better choice.
Don't kid yourself. Verizon isn't exactly looking to rock the boat pushing bleeding edge technology either. they're not inclined to invest money that they don't have to, or create more customer service issues than they already have. So that "future proof" network you're looking for won't be found at Verizon any more than you'll find it at AT&T.
I have no comment about Sprint or MPCS other than the fact that having traveled all over the country for business over the years, AT&T had the most consistent service for voice (which is my primary need) than even Verizon. Besides, it seems you already answered your own question regarding Sprint or MPCS. If you plan on venturing outside an urbanized inner-city area, you're pretty much screwed. After all... hellooooo... it's METRO pcs, not Pocono pcs.
Let me share with you what I'm inclined to do.
I love the Inspire, but when I saw the HTC Sensation is coming to Tmo, I had a moment of pause (as you did) and thought to return it and wait. But as you noted, with AT&T buying Tmo, there's a lot of 'if' on that plan to jump ship, since there's no saying when the two companies merge that I won't be forced into another phone. Or that the Sensation will get 4G speeds when the networks converge. Or that the bootloader will be cracked so I can install an unbranded ROM. Or that you will be able to use the Tmo phone on the merged network... lots of variables there.
If there's a reason why you just can't stay with AT&T and the Inspire, then I'd say Verizon is your next best choice. But given the Thunderbolt is nearly identical to the Inspire, and Verizon is more expensive for buying the phone ($175 vs. $50), it's your choice on whether the enhanced (but not always faster in all cases and in all places) data speed is worthwhile.
And of course we all need to remember that a contract is only 24 months. It goes quick. Not like it's a tattoo where you're living with it for the rest of your life.
Hope this helps...
It's Official the TB has been flashed to cricket by me proof down below

Why buy a 4G phone to backtrack to a 3G network?

Why waste your time? You could be doing something productive like curing cancer instead? Cricket of all carriers!
LMFAO guy guys guys i got ppl that want the phone flashed so i found a solution ppl want nicer phones on cricket im workin on 3g solution but for now we have 1x so please i dont have VZW money so i have cricket and cricket right now is doin it big
Yeah I used to have cricket too.....then I got a job.....what a waste of a good phone.....smh

I think its kinda cool....its a good thing for the people that don't have money

If you're on cricket cause you can't afford Verizon maybe you should just get a flip phone.... Save the food stamps for food, not thunderbolts....
In all honesty though, I don't even know what cricket is. Lol.

I'll stick to vzw, but good job none the less.

Here is a description in a nutshell: bit.ly/3QllHi
It's a way for anybody with bad credit to get a phone. A lot of my employees have it because they can't afford a security deposit with Verizon or any other large carrier.
Do they ride the bus? Do they call *every* Android device the "Google Phone" or "Droid"? Are they familiar with government assistance? Well sir you have yourself a Cricket customer.
Flashing a Thunderbolt over to Cricket is like parking your Maserati at a swap meet. What a waste.
That's like putting unleaded fuel in a Dodge Viper. She it looks at fancy but its gonna run like crap. Flash a US Cell phone or something. Not a 4G device! Waste!

I appreciate doing this just to do them, and this is cool and all, but if you don't have "Verizon money" then honestly you don't have thunderbolt money either.

Well all u haters love this if im not mistaken can you talk and surf the web at the same time i dont think so i have flashed this fone to cricket as of this morning with 3g and the ability to use DATA while in an active CDMA fone call
I don't understand the outrage here, but everyone is entitled to their opinion, I suppose. I, for one, think it's a nice development for the select few who may want it--or even if only to say it has been accomplished. Good work, dexter.

Seriously if someone buys a Bolt retail without contract you're paying north of $600 on retail outlets like Amazon. So you get a Bolt from VZW for $150 (maybe even $99 when they run sales) plus you pay for a month of service + data and cancel ($175) and you're still around $400. That's a lot of wasted money to get a Bolt that's not going to be using LTE. This kind of kills the affordability of Cricket.
Have you seen Cricket's data coverage map? I think I can step in and out of it no matter where I am. One step to the left...coverage. One step to the right...no data.
Android plan on cricket is $55/mo too so you're not saving a ton of money per month for Crapit I mean Cricket.
Alright I'm off my Cricket soapbox but seriously nice work getting it working on their network.

VZW Cancellation fees are $350 for a phone, plus $150 for the phone, another $100 for a month of service. Making the total price 600+. Either way he was paying 600+.
But if you can pay $600+ for a phone, but can't afford a monthly plan from verizon, you are doing something wrong.

Typing in short hand is akin to only speaking monosyllabic words... People can understand you without issue, you just look like an idiot more often than not. Especially doing so while making an untrue claim.

For those of you who don't like shelling out the gobs of cash to AT&T...I have the link for you!
http://www.straighttalksim.com/
I received my AT&T sim in the mail from Straight Talk along with the new APN information...and voila...I'm getting the same (if not faster) download speeds than I was with AT&T. Actually, I've been strangely getting more bars than I was w/AT&T. Not sure why...since it's the same network. Anyways...this transformed my bill from $130 per month to $45 per month for unlimited talk, text and web. I don't work for Walmart or anything...I just wanted to share some savings info with those who are interested! When they say on the website "cut your phone bill in half" they're not kidding! I wonder how Wally World can get away with sending AT&T roms...offer the same service...for half the cost? I dunno...but I'm not complaining!
Now...I doubt you'd get 4G speeds....but I've never truly had 4G speeds...so I'm not missing anything.
Thinking about doing this just to activate the inspire I have laying around with a cracked screen. Its between this, and redpocket

Maybe the new sim gave you a better signal?

I did this last month. Best decision I ever made. The only catch I've found is that the data isn't really unlimited, it's a use it but don't abuse it policy. I believe they will throttle you if you hog too much.
What radio are you using? I think I need a new one, mine keeps switching between 3G and H.
Been thinking of doing the same thing as soon as my contract is up.. Any activation fees or anything like that? What'd they charge for the sim?
*signed
I have been using Straight Talk for 6months with a sim card from a Nokia E71. This is known as the old sim swap method. Works great roams and all. From everything I've researched this uses the AT&T postpaid network.
The new sim card program they have charges you $14.95 for the sim card, and they had free shipping. NO activation fees or anything else.
This is the best data speed I've gotten though it's not usually this good. I'm using the 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03_M radio

Been thinking of doing this myself. But I have some worries. What happens when one day you decide to stream some video or audio and Straight Talk up and cancels your account? I would hate to lose a telephone number I have had for the last 12 years.

The word is if you keep it under 2gb a month and 170mb a day you should be good. Just use 3g watchdog and monitor it. I stream stuff all the time, just be aware of how much data you are using. I've had no problems though I've never exceeded the so called limits.

WOW! That's a lot of data! I would think they will have to come up with some limits if they are going to cut off service because you are using too much so called "unlimited" data. Guess we'll have to wait and see once this thing gets going full bore. If you can keep your usage to 2gb a month and 170mb a day then this is a great deal! If not I wouldn't risk it at this point..
A few months ago another carrier said unlimited data was unlimited but they could make changes if they saw fit for the network. And everyone thought it meant nothing then. Straight Talk says no media streaming and only download from their network. They could turn on you tomorrow too. I see nothing in writing about 2GB.

UR right nothing in writing about 2gb, but it has been good for me for the last 6 months. If you read the terms they say they can cut you off at anytime pretty much! You're right they could turn at any time. Guess it all depends on your situation, for me I'm willing to take the risk. lol
I keep my friends close (straight talk ) and my enemies even closer (AT$T).
At least the beast is predictable ....
I'll watch this thread with great interest for a while ....
Thank you for the information ....g

I looked at Straightalk, too. Wish they had a pay as you go plan, rather than monthly, with similar discount. I like options. There are several of of these non-contract companies but not much chat about them. Thanks for starting the thread, op. I have also heard similar talk about the 2Gb. cap, so that poster didn't just make it up. It might not be in writting but it seems to be what the users are experiencing.
I have decided to go Verizion as soon as my contract is up, ATT sucks. No 4G network and I cannot even get service at my house.

ATT sucks because they don't have phone service in your area? No phone carrier has service everywhere. You never should have stayed with ATT in the first place if you didn't have service. And ATT has a 4G network, at least as much as T-mobile does and as the FCC now defines it. They also have LTE which is faster than Verizon's LTE. And what does your post have to do with Straight Talk?
I too have been thinking of going to ST. I don't go over 5gb. I wonder if that is still to much for them. I don't like att as much as the next person but I do have good signal and do get 4G in my area. Has anyone found anything about the 2gb?

For the record, AT&T's is like that too. They throttle you if you're in the top 5% of data users.
