Can you install Windows 8 on a Xoom? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been hearing of people getting it installed on Samsung tablets and was wondering if there was any way to install Windows 8 on a Xoom?

For Pete's sake do a search there are several threads on this already.
(For those too lazy to search, the answer is a resounding NO)
Also I can find no evidence that Windows 8 is running on current Samsung Android tablets.

Microsoft has shown interest in the arm architecture and said that windows 8 will support it but I haven't seen or read anything saying that it actually works. I would be interested to see a video if you can provide one.

Yes, there are Samsung tablets running Windows 8, totally true.
Now, the rest you're missing: those Samsung tablets are made for Windows 8. They look like Android tablets; they feel like Android tablets; they sound like Android tablets; they smell like Android tablets (well, mine smells a bit of plastic and metal)... but, alas, they're specifically designed to run Windows 8.
You should read the news a bit and catch up.

I just had the question myself and did a search and came up with this! Correct me if I am wrong but, didn't this site used to be for people interested in hacking their equipment and sharing that information with others? Most of the posts on this site are new guys asking questions and people that have been around for a while blasting them for asking. "For Pete's Sake" get a life...

There's a search button for a reason. This topic (and about 90% of noob questions) has been talked to death.

This would be very cool to see but I don't see it ever happening sadly.:crying:

The Apple iphone-New files for our wizards

is it possible to dump the iphone OS for our wizards?
can you dump mac software on a pc and have it work? -- answer to your question and mine is no.
but we can create similar software -- search for "iContacts" and "TouchFlo" in this forum.
I love the htc touch
I dont want the whole OS on my wizard. I would like to try the Safari browser.
OMG .. you seriously asked ..
You're Damn Right I Ask!
Thats how we learn, we read and we ask questions that we dont have a answer to, yet. A lot of people are scared to ask questions on this forum, but not me buddy. Now stick to the question, can we extract some files from the iphone such as the Safari browser and put them on our wizards?
nope, sorry you cant, the system is totally different.

Wow man, that post helped me so much! I think that many other people will agree that that is totally on topic and is giving out a lot of information.
(Can the crap, why is there need for such useless posts?)
Flames...
Don't embarass those who are willing to ask a simple question that only requires a simple answer. If argue about it, argue about it simply, not obnoxiously. Giving our cackles and asking if this person is serious is pretty much lame in the case of forums.
Be polite... I like XDA Developers 'cause we're all polite here...

Well don't you realize that if we can't even fully port TouchFlo's finger gestures to devices such as the Hermes yet that it would be similarly not possible to port Safari, and/or the iPhone OS?
Why do you want Safari in Windows Mobile?
Its a good question actually - as far as I recall the iPhone is based on an Xscale core. Most WM devices are based on similar xscale cpu's so *if* the iphone was running Windows Mobile of some sort yes by all means rip away and run on your device. However since it runs OSX 'mobile' it would be like trying to get your fridge software to run on your tv - no go in any environment. On top of that I don't think you can even get to the system files to copy anything from the system?!
The one way to *possibly* do it is to join the Linux dev project for your phone and then try getting a Linux version of Safari running on your mobile..

You've got a point there. What I think he REALLY wants is the "turn the phone sideways and the phone goes into landscape" feature. LOVE the phone in your signature!

[Q] Honeycomb for nook color, why not for us?

Why are we not getting honeycomb to play with?
You really need to read some threads before posting a question that has already been answered many times.
Sent from my Viewsonic G Tablet running TnT Lite 4.2.2 w/ Pershoot's Kernel using Tapatalk Pro
And the honeycomb you are referencing has no practical use in the real world. Its a hacked together UI that does nothing but run the preview sdk
if it was worth it we would have it. our devs kick ass
Moved to general
I hate to sound like a jerk but what is it with all the people whining about honeycomb. The only version out so far is a hacked version built off the prelim sdk and in no way will work for the g tablet. Anyone who has been Modding for anytime knows the cardinal rule for android...
DON'T ASK FOR ETA'S.
When honeycomb is officially released by Google I'm sure it'll be like every other release and in a short time we'll have our own version. Until then have some patience please and do some research.
or if you want honeycomb straight away then get a xoom and pay the big bucks
What i dont get is why do people ask and ask...........
Doesnt your gtab do everything you need It to?
honeycomb... Hero cookie....danish....pop tart...soda cracker........flap jack or royal with cheese
Just names I dont see anything i cant wait for.
Now when they say the next android version will give my gtab the ability for it to make me samwiches and give me oral pleasure on demand that is when i will be all over the devs to build that $hit....

Let me get this straight. You post in the wrong section, you ask for an ETA, and you obviously did not search, which also means you did not read any of the forum rules or stickies. Yet, somehow we are all assholes. You know if you just follow a few simple rules your experience with XDA will be much better. The rules here are no different than any other forum. I am going to assume you are new to this, so I will help you a bit. Search for what an SDK port is and you will quickly realize why you do not want this.

I think you should flash the Nook Color ROM BilliamB, you obviously know what you're doing, I'm sure you can get it to work. I mean come on, the G Tablet has a Tegra 2 processor, it should totally work right? Although you may want to read a few threads.... oh wait, you obviously don't do that. Come on dude, the only one here being an AH (as you put it) is you.
Sent from my Viewsonic G Tablet running TnT Lite 4.2.2 w/ Pershoot's Kernel using Tapatalk Pro
Seriously.... You will not see Honeycomb on the G Tablet until another unit is released with Honeycomb and has the Tegra 2 chip. The issue is the instruction sets are different enough that its not a one for one port. The Nook, Dell Streak 5, Tegra 2, etc. are all based on the ARMv7 instruction set but there are difference in their implementation enough that make them incompatible. In addition the biggest differences lay in the I/O subsystem which makes these platforms completely different. With these major differences it makes porting from the emulator (which is how they are getting Honeycomb to work) a daunting tasking and nearly impossible on a Tegra 2 based device.
I am very confident after the first Honeycomb system image is posted it will be running on our tablets... It will be a race as to who gets props on Engadget for being the first to port to the G Tablet..
You would get less hostility if you read, learned and asked accordingly. Its a give and take community. Unfortunately the way you asked makes it seem your less inclined to contribute and just take...

Whoa!!! Bad move man, bad move. You need realize that you can't call people who are willing to spend rediculous amounts of thier personal time to provide the community with amazing firmware AH's! Quite the contrary - They are saints (and, actually, you serve no purpose).

Totally agreed. XD.
Hey Alpha06...
I'm just curious if that is a confirmed news or word of mouth that the G-tablet would have Honeycomb around the March?
I wouldn't guarantee that Honeycomb for the G-tab would be available for sure in March, however I wouldn't be surprised to see Alpha-versions of Honeycomb ROMs shortly after the first Tegra2 devices are released and rooted. Like everyone has been saying around here, don't ask for an ETA, because the people around here that do develop do it on their personal time. They have lives, work, and possibly kids, wives, or whatever that also wants their time as well.
Remember, porting a ROM is a lot easier if there is solid reference material to build from. As you may notice, TNT-Lite comes from his building on and improving the existing TNT version of Android that came with the G-Tablet. Vegan is a modification and improvement of the Vega OS. I don't believe that the developers of either package (and correct me if I am wrong) went to Google's GIT repository for Android and compiled their own versions of the OS specifically for the device - along with writing their own custom device drivers for all of the internal hardware. They built off of, and improved what was available.
IIRC, the Nook port of Honeycomb is only partially functional. The just released port for the Dell Streak (http://www.mytabletlife.com/2011/02/08/dell-streak-honeycomb-port/) is as well. Why, because they are essentially starting from scratch.
Which brings everything back to my original point. As soon as reference devices are out in the wild, I'm sure that will be the point where we will see Honeycomb ports start to pop up here as well.
BigJohn
march can not get here soon enough... heh.

[Q] Best place for Palm Pre 2 development?

Well, my company is now forcing everyone to use a palm pre 2 as their business phone. I'm not too happy about it'll but then again, I know litterally nothing about it or WebOS. So, I'm asking the awesome community here for some advise.
I've searched, but only found a small WebOS section here. Did I happen to overlook a Palm Pre 2 Section?
I've also searched Google and elsewhere, but have seen very little development wise for it. Is there any chance for custom ROMs or even android on it or is WebOS going to be worth keeping? I guess I'll be finding out myself in a few weeks, but I kinda wanted to get a headstart on it and be ready to flash or customize it so it will be as useful as possible. ;-)

[Q] Windows 8

do you think win8 will ever work on the TF101?

Really... your opening another post about this? search before you ask there are plenty of threads already discussing this, concensus is that it does meet minimum requirements but just barely and it probobly wont get ported due to legal issues
Cool. A windows 8 thread. I was gonna start one myself but was too afraid. I'm so glad you started one because I really wanna talk about it. Maybe we could talk about winmo as well. Its windows and if windows 8 works then winmo ought to work, And maybe we could get iOS as well. I would love to have iOS on my TF. Wouldn't it be wonderful. And maybe someone could port OSX as well. I'm sure that could be done in no time. and webOS. I know hp is quitting wedOS but if the TP is getting Android then surely we can get webOS. Sorry gotta go the sugar plums are dancing in my head.

Do you think people will ever search before posting new threads?
I did search but got no hits on the Transformer. Sometimes you have to mess about with search to get the required results. Always telling people to search first is an easy copout. The trouble is search doesn't always work as expected. Many BB coded forums search can be pretty lousy.
+1 search doesn't always work.
I for one cant even search this forum while on my TF- anyone else having this problem.
Even more annoying is the same mindless people ( with 90% of their posts being negative) saying search before you post on every duplicate thread.
I am beginning to think that those people have no life - they do nothing all day but search for duplicate threads so they can post- "search first."
Yet another duplicated thread. Closing.

Hello,
You will have to ask an iPhone geek about that, you won't find many Apple gurus here, in case you missed it, this forum is all about windows phones and android, not Apple iOS. Find an iPhone/Apple forum to post your question.

Thanks for the fast answer! I don't think that's correct.. because there is a much higher chance that I'll find an android user here who had an iPhone in the passed, unlike iPhone/Apple forums, which people own there iphones, not android.

Well, I know that a lot of things are not cross compatible, saved information that was created on iPhone may not work on android, that kind of thing isn't even always possible between two android devices.
