[Q] HTC Sensation XE 4.0 Stock OTA update freezes on boot - HTC Sensation

Hey. I just got a message saying there is a new update for my Sensation XE. So i flashed it going from the older version.
New version is: 4.0 OTA Sense 3.6
Old version was: 2.3.4 OTA Sense 3.5
Both are stock.
The problem is that when i boot arfter upgrading, the green HTC logo boot picture apears, and the phone does nothing more, except draining battery. Any advice?
I have S-off'ed the phone and custom recovery rom.

Yes, i was able to restore an old backup.
I have also tried wiping everything. Using the EXT4-recovery rom or something like that.

Are there any more information i can contribute with? I don't know how these roms work and thus not a clue on what information to inform you guys.

Have you got the latest firmware?

Did you flash anything or mod the phone in any way? If all you did was accept an official update leading to this boot loop I would call HTC or your carrier and have them fix it!

OP said they had the phone S-OFF but still running stock ROM - wouldn't the S-OFF be an issue for warranty?
Maybe the OTA update couldn't or didn't properly update the radio/bootloader/recovery segment - that would cause an ICS ROM to fail boot. I think trying to reflash the old stock ROM, or a GB-based custom one, is the first thing to try. Failing that, maybe manually flash the appropriate ICS firmware/radio package for the OTA ROM (see this thread)

Did these flash OK (even though you are unable to boot them)? Recovery would have notified you of the result.
If so as above post, update firmware with the firmware needed for the last from you successfully flashed. Post if you get stuck.

Im maybe experiencing the same problem. Here's what happened. I was using internet-pass-through with my Sensation XE for me download games and saw in my notifications that there's an available system update which is the android 4.0, etc. I downloaded the file and installed it but right after i got stucked with picture of an android and beside it is a exclamation point in a triangle. I removed the batt and turned on the phone and nothing happened, nothing new. So, I searched in youtube and saw a way of updating ICS in my phone. My phone had S-off but still using Stock rom. I entered the bootloader then CWM then formatted the system, cache, then tried to update to ICS since i got the zip file already in my SDcard. After then, the installation was aborted, it says cannot fine system/build.prop or something. I rebooted my fone and I got stucked up with the HTC logo and white screen. Omg please help me. I'm crying. I just bought the fone. :'(

[Q] Can't install ICS OTA on Sensation, Please help!!

Dear XDA-developers, readers and other people!
I have a Sensation (Vodafone NL Branded) with software;
Android Version; 2.3.4
HTC Sense Version; 3.0
Software number; 1.50.162.2
Smallband version; 10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M
The phone is S-Off (Revolutionary) but still has stockrom.
Superuser is installed (can not uninstall it).
No i would like to install the OTA update i received from HTC/Vodafone;
3.32.162.11 (302.59MB) - Android 4.0
When downloaded, the phone is preparing to install and restarts.
For a second i see the progressbar and than i only see a droid with an warning sign.
Why can't i install the update?
Please help me.
I have been reading forums for 4 day's and tried things like recovery software, but it did not work.
I am a noob, so please make it in easy language!
Thanks a lot!!!
I'm not sure about the Sensation, but on the Desire when you S-OFF with alpharev, your new hboot is protected. To fix this you have to install an unprotected hboot.

Firstly and most importantly if you have Su installed you are rooted you can not install ota updates whilst you have a rooted handset
The only thing you can do is download the official stock European ruu here
http://db.tt/OWcAvh1S
Follow this thread to change your cid to unbranded one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16140388
Connect your phone to your pc make sure USB debugging is enabled and follow the on screen instructions this will remove root from your phone but it will remain S-off
Once installed you can check for updates and install ICS

At the OP, do you have the stock recovery or a custom recovery lime Clockwork Mod Recovery? If you have a custom recovery then tho sis why you can not install the official update. You must have the stock recovery.

Frank, so you have S-OFF and are rooted but still on a stock ROM. Do you have a custom recovery installed, like ClockworkMod or 4EXT? If you do, then you need to go back to stock recovery in order to be able to install OTA updates.
You also havent mentioned if you are receiving any error/warning messages during installation of the update. Knowing what you're seeing on the screen could help in determining a specific course of action.
Hi Guys!
I have installed a unbranded (stock) Rom and after that my Sensation didn't find ICS OTA.
So i downloaded the ICS Rom from XDA and installed.
So i'm on ICS now, but will not receive stock updates OTA.
And not on my stock rom, because i didn't make a backup
Thanks all!

You can download the official RUU of the stock ROM for your Sensation and then connect your Sensation to your computer and run the RUU. Go to here to download the RUU. I suggest you download the one that says " RUU_Pyramid_Vodafone_IT_1.45.165.1_Radio_10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.0" as it looks like it is the most recent RUU. You will probably have to do a OTA to get back to the 1.50.162.2 ROM you was on. Remember this though the RUU will make your Sensation S-on again so you will have to S-off your Sensation again after you have installed the OTA back to the 1.50.162.2 ROM. If you do not and you flash the ICS OTA then it will change your Hboot and Revelutionary is not compatible with that Hboot yet.
Edit: If the RUU I suggested is not the right region for you, I think it is for Italy, then look at the other four Vodafone RUUs. Two of them are for France, one is for Germany, and one is for the UK. But you may have to do more than one OTA to get back to the 1.50.162.2 ROM so you can get the ICS OTA if you have to use any of those RUUs

I think you should only have problems if you use a newer android version on a older firmware. The firmware has some type of backwards compatibility in them but roms can become buggy if you uses a older firmware.

To update the firmware put the pg58img file on root of sd card, boot into bootloader by removing battery, place battery back in, press volume down sand power at the same time, the device will recognize the update and ask to proceed, volume up for yes. The device will then update and reboot.once fully rebooted REMOVE the pg58img file from the device or it will continue to update ! You now successfully updated the firmware! It will be successfully updated. Hope this helps you.

Are you trying to flash leedroid tweaks or something?

Hi,
If you want to downgrade your firmware, you need to be s-off.
Look HERE
Downgrade using 1.17 firmware.
Then,you can install GB ROM.
Look HERE for ARHD GB ROM
ARHD does do an ICS version of the ROM as well.
