Considering to buy one.
in a price of 300$ it has no other competitors...
Will it get ICS ? (Custom ROMS,OR OFW..)
Thanks.
I have been reading that samsung is not going to update this with ics because they are releasing another 7 inch tablet with ics. Honestly it's just rumors and speculation, but I would say no. I got mine the other day for 280 bucks shipped. For that price, it's good enough for me. Beware though, the thing is full of bugs.

May you give an example
The ui is really laggy, none of the input boxes in the web browser work as expected, the remote control feature (for me at least) never worked once, netflix does not respond correctly. When netflix does work, the screen will occasionally flicker. This is all I have noticed in the few days I have had it. Also, the screen has really bad resolution.

Everything works fine for me. On occasion it needs to be reset by holding the power button because it won't wake up (look at the "sleep of death" thread)
But the browser, netflix, and remote all work fine for me.
It is slated to get ICS. It will probably be delayed into 4th quarter this year though.

Go and take a look for yourself at your local BestBuy, etc... IMO. This is by far the best 7' tab out there. No problems to speak of for me.
not sure how buggy it is for other people...
anyways.
the stock launch is horrible. never mattered to me because i always install another launcher on all my android devices.
the stock browser is ok. its annoying that the brightness always dims. i installed the browser from asus. its faster and doesnt do that annoying dimming. it also has the dark honeycomb theme instead of the light theme that comes with the tab.
I live offshore so i cant go to best buy

I have never had any of these issues with this device before or after the update. The screen resolution is not that bad IMO, sure it could be better but hey you could always buy and over priced, mediocre spec, limited OS apple product with a nice screen.
Sure development on this device is slow at this point, but thats what you get with a device that not many top devs are drawn too. garyd9 seems like an awesome dev but like he said, it's really upto samsung to release ICS or better source code to get things going.
I love this device for the size and hardware, I think the IR is a nice touch as long as app development get more involved.
Just always keep in mind that Samsung is in the business of mass producing a bunch of devices and making money. Customers service and support is an after thought.

i would get the g-tab 7.7 on the 10.1 3g lil more costly but better all-round
I actually got it on amazon from electronics expo, the price varies greatly depending on the time of day. As soon as I added it to my cart the next one was 340 dollars. Maybe it goes to 340 and the price goes down for every one they sell until it hits rock bottom and then goes back up to 340. I need to check my software version, but the first thing I did when I booted it up was check for software updates in the settings menu. I dont have it on me, I am at work, and it is at home next to my bed. I will check later on how to update software.
I am up to date on my firmware already.
It will get ics its been said many times.
Just don't know when.

Hi,
Thanks for contacting Peel and a big thanks in advanced for your patience pertaining to this Galaxy Tablet issue. At this time, there have been issues relating to the way the tablet fires off the IR codes, this IR driver fix is part of Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) OS update. I wish there was a timeline on when Samsung will release this update but unfortunately there is not, this issue is in Samsung's hands. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, we want you up and running with Peel as much as you do. We will let you know as soon as this update becomes available.
Thanks for your interest in Peel,
Thaddeus

I truly hope that they just rushed out GB to get the product to market to give them more time to work on a fully stable ics build.. Probably just wishful thinking though

As a person who did his research, I was deciding upon the Amazon Kindle Fire and GT 7+, I decided with the Galaxy Tab and I believe it was the right decision. Great design, super thin and light, it's powerful enough for what I do. I'm a student and power user. I do a lot of reading, browsing and work email from this tablet.
Pros:
Still very customizable, even with most of its lock downs. Extremely easy to root.
Very powerful without the TouchWiz. Using a 2nd launcher like Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher EX works without issues.
Screen may not be SUPERAMOLED, and its a lower resolution like 1024 600 then other tablets, the colors and screen quality is exceptional.
Web browsers on this is super fluid and flash works as fluid as a desktop.
Great battery. I've managed to get 1.5 - 2 days use out of it without charge. That is with web browsing, music listening, some movies or youtube, book reading.
Great form factor. It's super thin, so it's easy to hold and pocket. I have a folio case for it, and it still fits in my pocket with minimal thickness.
Works great with google voice. I say this because of the ear piece built into the surface. If you get some voicemail, and you're working on your tablet, you can listen to your voicemail in private without having to pull out the headphones or making the volume super low. Which brings me to my next part.
Great sound! It's loud enough for me to listen to music and through the headphones is clear and crisp (using my pair of workout sony headphones - amazing how a $20 pair of headphones sounds just as good as Beats by Dre )
Camera is satisfactory. I don't usually use mobile phone cameras, but this one is okay for my purpose. I take pictures of ad designs and use Skitch to make markup notes on the image.
Cons:
Samsung Kies - You're [almost] required to use Kies to transfer files to and from the device, which leads me to my next item...
Locked down storage - Unlike common android devices, you cannot mount the storage or sdcard. Even using a 3rd party file manager will not let you manage the files.
Proprietary USB cable - 30pin to usb, not standard. Nuff said...
terrible flashing methods - I accidentally bricked my last GT7+, and it was my fault, but if I bricked it, I would have to send it to Samsung for "repair". Unlike other companies, and I'll use Apple as a good example, you can't download the official firmware for your device and reflash your tablet.
So in the end, the Pro's outweigh the cons, and I've found some easy workarounds without having to use Kies. I mean I use Kies just to backup (I guess), but for normal file management, I use File Expert. It turns your tablet into a FTP server or you can log into your tablet's file system via a browser and do some manual file management with upload and downloads. Unfortunately, it won't let you work in the SDCard, but it's better then nothing. Then I use DoubleTwist to manage my music with Air Sync. Excellent piece of software!
Anyway, it's a great tablet, and I'm sure ICS will make it better too. Samsung said its one of the tablets to get ICS, it's just a matter of time when. Even without ICS, it works well.

so how are you liking it? have you already put the market on? any noticable bugs or quirks worth mentioning? thanks
it took me 1 day to absolutely go from "hmm, not sure this is what i wanted" to "holy ****, this is the best tablet yet".
it's a thing of beauty if you are willing to dig in with the gapps kit and getting all the apps that i love on my Desire onto the tablet.
it's fantastic. any specific questions you'd like answered, let me know.
Can you please give more details about it?
What about the screen? Does it look OK with market apps, cause it has bigger screen resolution. Does it look nice or blurry? I 've seen Archow with win7 and it's terrible.
Speed? Updates? Any good resources for roms (other than XDA)?
Sorry for botherning but I 'm interested to get one. Santa Claus promished it to me (LOL).
I'd be interested in what you have to say about it - particularly battery life.
Looking @ getting the Archos 70 for the wife, and the 101 for myself.
Sorry archos I went ahead and got a g tablet. It's not perfect but with a little work its a good tablet and cm6.1 is already in beta for it.

i made a video of my 101 hooked up to my TV, have a look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYAyQQk2C78&hd=1
the device is great. speed is great, the design is great. for some examples, movies look fantastic, Angry Birds looks incredible. it does have a little lag once in a blue moon, but usually because i'm pushing it too hard.
we're still waiting on 2.2, but other than not having flash websites (who cares?), you wouldn't know it. when we get 2.2, this is gonna scream.
the battery life is the best i've experienced in a device lately. i can go at least 2 days with normal use. apparantly, it's been tested by some dude on Star Wars 2. it played 3 times over before the battery died.
i rarely plug it in.
was wondering how is the screen quality? view angles? both in landscape or protrait? have the folio 100 for a few more days, 760g feels a bit on the heavy side after some hours of use. build quality? color gamut and sharpness on the screen?
how does the 101 do in this matter?
i looked at the Folio just before i bought the 10". i found the screens on both to be identical. what moved me over to the Archos was the fact that the Folio out of the box was force crashing left and right. the salesguy and i both laughed and i walked away.
otherwise, the screen quality is very good. is it quite as good as the iPad? no. but, i have not had any headaches trying to read and watch on it.

never expected it to be like the ipad, but if u say that it is identical as the folio, then the quality is not what i would prefer but still good enough for me.
can you try the skyfire browser on it? How is the video streaming?
Quick review of my Archos 70
I've had my Archos 70 for about a week now. One of the lucky ones. I'm really happy with it but there are a few quirks that I hope will be sorted out once 2.2 is released for it. Here's a few of my thoughts on it.
1. I like the screen. I've read people complain about the viewing angle but it's fine for me. I wish the resolution was a higher but that really only comes into play when using the web browser and viewing high resolution images.
2. There is definite issue with the soft buttons that needs to be fixed. I don't run into it all that often but it does make using alternate launchers/book readers a little annoying. Basically the soft buttons are unknown to some apps. It's not actually limiting the screen area like status bar is. usually full screen apps are the issue. The kindle app for instance chops off the bottom line of text which makes reading books hard. The Nook app on the other hand has no issues because you can set your own margins.
3. Swype works really well in portrate mode. The best way to "type" on one of these things. If I need to write a forum post or anything more than a few lines I'll pick up the archos. I can't stand the keyboard on my IPad so to me this is a HUGE benefit. The only downside is in landscape mode the soft buttons overlap the side a bit which makes hitting the period and back buttons a little hard
4. My android phone has a track ball and I wish this had one. About the only feature I miss from the ipad is the hold over a word for zoom in on a text field that allows you to place the cursor where you want it the track ball fixes that on the phone but not so much without it. My finger is not precise enough for cursor placement. The stock keyboard does have arrow keys but Swype does not. (I did figure out that if you hold down the power button an option comes up to modify the soft buttons to include arrow keys but it's really large.)
5. The bottom left corner gets pretty hot but it's not unbearable. That's the only part of the device that I noticed that. Plus when in portrate mode the side with the camera is a little heavier.
6. This thing is great for reading. The nook app works really well for me
7. It feels great in your hand. Just the right size and weight.
8. No compass. I wasn't expecting it though. Ipad does have one (since I've kinda compared the 2 in this already)
9. Google maps works great and wifi triangulation works well.
10. The screen does not get as dirty as fast as the ipad. I'm constantly cleaning the ipad as the fingerprints can really get in the way of viewing. I don't find that to be a problem with this device. The bezel does attract fingerprints but a microfiber cloth cleans that right up.
11. This thing needs froyo and root I've gotten way to used to having root and being able to control what the device does. Maybe over thanksgiving I'll have some time to look into it. Right now you must manage tasks on it and clear up memory or the thing will lag a bit. Some of the autokillers I've not found work for me. I guess if you've never seen 2.2 with a tweaked android internal memory manager they would be ok for you but not for me Luckily the task app it comes with is pretty good.
12. Even though it won't charge thru USB the included charger comes with the most common plug styles and allows you to swap them out. Really nice.
13. Battery life is pretty amazing but I think they toggle off wifi when the screen is off no matter what. I want to keep wifi on so I get email on it. Could be fixed with the firmware upgrade.
14. Video playback is nice and smooth and the audio player is pretty good as well. I did try some mkv files at 720p (not sure of the full specs of the media but could find out) and did get some slow down in the video in high motion areas. You could tell as the audio/video sync would go out then come back. I was also using the mini-hdmi->hdmi cable to put it on my tv when that happened. I've not tested any other videos yet. I don't have a lot of digital video hanging around these days.
15. I'd recommend getting a case. Kindle 2 or nook cases seem to work. A screen protector is also a good idea. I've been really careful with mine and i've still managed to somehow scratch the screen. I can only see it at specific angles in certain light so it doesn't detract from actual use but still you hate to have a scratch on a pretty screen
I'm very happy with the device. Once we get froyo I'll be even more ecstatic. I've not seen the need to grab my ipad once since I got it so that's sayin something.

mmhh..
didnt they say that it will be almost imppossible to root the droid x too??
it will get rooted..just like the ps3 got "jailbroken" lol (i hate when people use the that term) but may be it will take years..lol
I've had one for a week too, definitely wanted a 7 incher since I prefer to have extra portatility. Everything is working great and Froyo update will only make things better.
Altough rooting etc is a nice thing to mess around with the device, I dont feel like it is a necessity for enjoying the device.
At the end Android devices pretty much let you do everything you want out of the box and it's not like I thought that AOSP roms were the best things on earth either (back to sense rom on Desire).
Once Froyo is here with Flash support and Froyo ap2sd, the device will have all I want and I wont change my mind wether a root shows up or not (we know it will eventually).

The X was rooted almost immediately (or even before launch?), but they haven't broken the bootloader encryption yet, so basically all that gained them at first was the ability to manipulate the filesystem outside of /data. Custom ROMs/kernels have been a bit of a chore. I haven't watched the progress too closely, but last I remember they've been able to get everything but kernels working, and even that may have progressed.
SOFTWARE UPDATE COMING THIS WEEK
The next GTablet software update is scheduled for release by Friday, December 24, 2010. GTablet Users will be notified of the update automatically while an active WiFi connection is enabled.
(You can also check for updates manually by selecting the Updates icon in the applications menu. Tap the More button at the bottom of the home screen to view the full menu, then tap Updates.)
Please follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update. Your GTablet should be fully charged before you begin the update process. The download may take anywhere from 1 minute to 1 hour, depending on the WiFi connection speed.
This update features better performance, improved responsiveness, and the ability to toggle between the customizable Tap’n’Tap user interface and the standard Android desktop. Look for additional updates in the future as we continue to enhance the GTablet.

New Gtab owner impressions
Just picked up a Gtablet for myself yesterday. Right now I'm not sure if I'm going to keep this or not.
The good is that I like the size, i don't like the 7" tablets because I think they're too small, the GUI is nice in appearance. But now, the bad. The GUI may have a nice appearance but even with the update it is just way too slow. The screen is ok as long as you're looking at it straight on, but a little angle on it and kiss it goodbye.f
This unit has some nice features, which includes its very affordable price, but it also has a number of downsides and I'm not sure which comes out on top right now.
I'm going to look at ROM options here and decide whether it is worth it to remove their stock OS and GUI and replace it with one of the customer roms available here.
Right now I would say that I'm pretty dissapointed in the way this device works but I like the size of the device and I like the price.

Welcome to our dilemma!
One piece of advice....new Honeycomb tablets won't be out til March supposedly. I think most of us here will upgrade to something else shortly thereafter.
Until then, you can use this tablet as set up for your final purchase. Get your apps set up in Appbrain. Learn how to back up things. Use this as your experiment tablet and have some fun. Just playing with this tablet convinced me not to buy an iPad. I spent time playing with the gTab and my wife's iPad...even with the viewing angles, this tab wins hands down with roms not burdened by horrible or restrictive UI.
Yes...$400 is a lot to spend on a toy but you'll learn a lot in the process and keep yourself from bricking your ultimate device in the future. Plus you could always pass this on to kiddos or someone you know could use it afterwards.
I'll be giving this one to my dad if or when I decide to upgrade. With a modified Honeycomb rom, you should be able to fetch a decent amount for the gTab and use it for an upgrade if you desire.
The best part...NO CONTRACT and great price. Can't say that about any other tablet we know coming or already on the market.
Haven't heard anything much about what was in this update though? I'm looking forward to the end of January update though.
Would have to disagree.
iPad has a better screen and responds smoother. There are less bugs and errors. Most everything works on the iPad except flash websites.
So far comparing the two, I shouldn't have bothered to buy a gtab yet. Perhaps when the modr's get a couple more months to beat on it, it will become more competitive with the iPad.
There are many advantages of the gtab, however the overall experience is lacking even with tnt lite. It just needs more time.

The IPad is closed and for the most part you will have to buy the next generation of IPad for improvements. The Gtab is open and it's only gonna improve with time. And Flash is a big deal for most people as it lessens the browsing "experience" without it.
Before I become an apple hater, I don't like Motoroloa because of the locked bootloader. When I buy a piece of hardware I should be able to install what I want, not what some company chooses to let me have.
Yeah, have to beat on the iPad a bit. It has the better screen so big kudos for that. But the lock down just kills me. No Flash, no USB, no microSD, iTunes required, etc. It's just too limiting for me, even if it "just works".
Here's another question -- do Xvid AVI's even work on the iPad as-is? On the GTab, it's just drag and drop. Yeah they aren't high-def but a lot of us still use them as their primary source of video. In my case, I converted all my DVD's to Xvid AVI's awhile back.

Roebeet is completely right. His, rothnic, gojimi, and others have turned this piece of garbage into a real power device. Yes, the display angles stink, but it is only me looking at it, so why would I look at it off angle? Flash, drag and drop useability, complete customizability, higher resolution, lower price... I am sure there are more reasons I didn't mention, but those technical reasons combined with this Dev community make the g tablet a real winner.
BTW if you are not Modding your gtab then you have basically wasted your money.
I remember when limited viewing angles were sold as a plus for privacy when sitting on a plane etc!
I have an ipad as well as my gtablet. Yes xvid plays via the vlc app yes its smoother and more stable but its locked down even jailbroken you can only do so much. I don't like that there are no addons like USB or microsd I like my tab better. I can do more with it. Wish it has GPS like my ipad I really like tomtom on a 10" screen and I like the 3g service. But at a $750 bucks for all the bells and whistles it still can't do what I want it to. I have an iPhone 4 aswell and I can do the same with my iPhone.

I was like all other people and was so excited about the honeycomb and Xoom, So, I spent 30 mins on a local bestbuy and played around it.. here are my initial feedback.
First, the Xoom is very nice, very nice. It is definitely my favorite device out of 3 of them (gtab, xoom and ipad).
Screen: The screen looked very sharp and the viewing angles were very good. I tilted it with all kind of viewing angles and I could still see my screen (actually a youtube video). but, I found that the Ipad has a brighter screen.
Sound: The sound was much better than the Gtab. The volume was very loud and I just turned it on for 1/4. I played a few songs and the sound were just wonderful.. no complaint..
Touch: The touch was very sensitive and I was able to touch 3-4 fingers at the same time on a map. Gtab was limited to 2 touches. I found that the touch is more easy on the xoom than Ipad. My fingers was stick a little bit on ipad but not xoom. very nice.
Weight: Same weight as ipad and gtab (~1.5) but it definitely feels much lighter. The sides (left and right) are thinner, top and bottom are thicker. So, it creates an illusion that it is very thin looking from the side. Holding it is ok.
Build: Very good build quality but I felt that if I drop it, and it is done..
App: Honeycomb was nice and it took me less than 2 mins to get used to it (if you already have a gtab). But, most of the apps worked basically the same as running on gtab except youtube, gmail, music and etc. Developers need to start building apps for honeycomb to take advantage of the new OS. Otherwise, I found that I can do pretty much the same on my gtab..
Camera: the 5M rear camera was nice but the quality was ok.
Other: GPS, Accelemeter, etc.. worked great..
Negative:
- I didn't like that they put the headphone jack at the top and the power jack at the bottom.
- No accessories at all in store.
- the black color just didn't look expensive. they should have released a white or silver one..
Overall, it is very nice device but $800 is too much for me.. If Moto releases a $600 WIFI version, I would definitely get it. To be honest, I think that the extra $200 to get a Xoom is worthy. It is one of the devices I believe would make my brainwashed Apple Ipad co-workers soooooo jealous for a few weeks (until they get the ipad2..)
I guess that viewsonic needs to either upgrade the gtab to a better specs or lower the price to compete.
A few interesting (to me, anyway) tidbits about the Xoom:
1. Apparently no USB host function (jury still out)
2. Honeycomb appears to have dynamic management of app and media space. This is the reason the microsd does not work. Motorola has asked for a patch so microsd will work. Seems Honeycomb is intended to be a closed system for apps, just like iOS, but less restrictive (of course).
If you look in Xoom's settings, there is no "free space" for device storage allocation, but there is an item view of total app and media space used and a total free for the whole storage. No allocations.
Great info. thank you. Based on the above, nothing here puts me over the edge to upgrade above my baby (gtab). At the moment my plan is to upgrade the screen if one is released per other forum news and if a good tutorial comes with it for the install.

Apparently due to the new app and storage management, quite a few apps either do not install, work or they crash after short use. Honeycomb may be an OS best adapted once apps catch up to it.

I will take that plunge if the option ever becomes a serious reality. Although it took me a second to get used to the viewing angle I do like the privacy aspect of the current screen. I feel totally comfortable doing my online banking and purchases in public.
Over all I'm sticking with my gtab. Stable, fast, flash and hulu working. I don't feel the need to upgrade for a long time. I don't even care about 3.0 at this point.

Same here, screen could be better but is not garbage either so for the price I am quite happy with my new gtablet, I own a nexus one and the higher quality screen seem to pay off more on a smaller device than a full screen tablet.
I am quite confident that better rom will appear sooner than later and my current tnt with ADW is rock stable
Most app that doesn't install have issue with the CPU not the storage configuration IMHO.
I think google is making a mistake with the way they limit software based on device, I am trying to load firefox and it doesn't allow me because I used the market fix
I hope they realize they will force people to side-load apps from all kind of source often unreliable...
Also the market doesn't handle 2 device linked to the same account well it seem...
So more issue with Google than with my Gtab
Wasn't really sure where to put this, since there isn't a forum for this device but thought people here might be interested?
First impressions are incredibly favourable.
It feels absolutely incredible in the hand with how slim it is, and the build materials are stellar - a refreshing change from Samsung's usual gear (every now and again they show that they really can make extremely classy looking and feeling devices, only wish they did that more often!). The screen is amazing, but I only realised how good it is when I had it next to my Transformer Prime - I thought the Prime's screen was stellar (best on a tablet yet I thought) but the 7.7 makes it look thoroughly average.
It's HC 3.2 with TW, and runs pretty well with just the occasional tiny micro-hitch here and there (the Prime's Tegra 3 is the only device I've had so far that could drive HC well enough to call 'buttery'). I noted with interest that there is no lag typing in the browser with a software keyboard, must be something Samsung have done to it because even the Prime had attrocious lag in HC in browser typing...
Need to get some stupid proprietary connectors tomorrow and can then do usual connectivity test and video...
Questions?
where'd you get it? is it GSM? does it have voice calling feature enabled? is the SAMOLED+ as good as its hyped up to be. How much did it cost?

Got it from Mobicity, mine isn't the 3G one, but it is available (and by the looks of it calling should be possible for those inclined!).
The SAMOLED+ is pretty stunning. Only a couple of days ago I was saying how the Transformer Prime has the best screen on a tablet but side-by-side the 7.7 blows it away (I think in Super-IPS mode the Prime will have a significant advantage for outdoors usability though).
Price was in the order of $750NZD from memory, as always with a device at release there is a premium to be paid.
very nice. yeah here's the link for 3g version described aas full voice calling ability..

I think Im all set with my 7.0+ until a nice quad core 7" with voice comes along with some beefed up specs.

Yep, if you're happy with that screen size I see no reason not to wait and pick up the ASUS one, amazing price point on that!
Yep.. the only thing they didn't do well is... price Almost twice as much as for the 7+ ?!? For a bumped screen and CPU clock? Come on Samsung, you can do better!
For that price I would expect it to be twice as fast and have at least HDMI out built it...

Have we gotten a confirmation for pricing in the US yet? Pricing this above $479 is a mistake.

Kiwi's lose out on price; in Australia you can pick the wifi version up for about $550. I reckon I've seen it on the grey market for about $500.

I got the 3G 7.7 a couple of days ago. I'm in the US and ordered it from negrielectronics.com for about US$650 plus shipping. They shipped it on Tuesday and I got it on Thursday - how convenient that we had a winter storm in Chicago and we got sent home from work, so I could be home to receive it :-D The model I have is the silver-backed one, and looks like it came from Hong Kong.
I took it to an AT&T store today to activate it on a month-to-month data plan. The staff were drooling over it! FYI for anyone else doing the same thing, they had to fake the IMEI in their system to get it to come up with the correct data plan, as their system did not recognise my Tab's IMEI, with it not being an AT&T device. They ended up using the IMEI of one of the HSDPA (*not* LTE) tablets they had in the store. Also, after it was all activated, I had to go into the APN settings and add a new APN titled "broadband" (no username/password) for data to actually work.
I love this Tab - the hardware is spectacular, and the screen is out of this world! My only dilemma is what to do about my Tab 7plus, which I've had for about a month. I'm still within return period for that, but there's something about the 7plus where, for all the tech whizzbangery of the 7.7, the 7plus just feels that little bit more personal.... It might just be that because the 7plus has the rougher back, it's a bit easier to hold one-handed. The 7.7 is a bit slippy.
About ready to order a 7.7 myself from negri...but wifi only. Just worried about U.S. Developed roms being compatible down the road when the US version launches. Does your IR blaster work?

Hello guys.
I also got a 7.7 3g a couple days ago and registered here to share some impressions and questions. Coming from a galaxy s plus and iPad, this is my first experience with honeycomb.
The hardware is great, as has been said many times. The tablet is gorgeous, a little heavier than it's svelte looks may suggest and feels solid, gets barely warm, a pleasure to hold.
The size is ideal for web browsing on the move, pages in landscape are generally easy to read without need of zooming and panning around. I also find amoled screens to strain eyes a little less than lcd thanks to the potentially darker colors.
Battery life is ok, not incredible. I got over 8 hours of random use with wifi and auto screen luminosity.
The software is a different story.
The preloaded Swype keyboard is bugged. On large documents, double tapping a word to select it causes the editor to scroll to the top and select a random block from the first lines. The frequency of this happening seems correlated with the dimension of the document - almost always on the 100Kb file I'm working with now, but you don't need to get nearly as large.
I verified the bug with three different editors, jota, 920, and the built in note app. It's less apparent on the latter as it only handles short notes, but still happens constantly on specific words.
It's especially annoying because the keyboard is otherwise excellent, imo more responsive to fast swipes and accurate in text prediction than the commercial SlideIT alternative, it even has cursor and edit keys accessible with a couple taps.
Other issues I imagine belong to honeycomb and well known here, but were a surprise to me, used to a fine gingerbread experience.
The interface suffers from significant hiccups. Apps can't write on the micro SD, thought as consolation Samsung's preloaded file manager allows to copy data to it.
Multitasking is unreliable for serious work as background apps get randomly closed and lose data. Registering to this forum I left Dolphin browser to open the verification email, went back to find all tabs gone. The same browser on a phone with half the ram rarely if ever had the issue.
App crashes have also been much more common, included one with the pre installed pen memo app, few with the settings manager, more with Dolphin.
I'll cut it before this becomes a rant on the OS. I'm interested in knowing if others can reproduce the keyboard problem, to make sure it's not my device to be defective.
Bottom line, ICS can't come soon enough and hopefully will address issues. This tablet needs and deserves better than the stuff it's running now.
Btw, I got it from Negri too, excellent service. There is no IR gun, it may be specific to other models or just have been removed from the final specs.
thank u for that in depth review!

I find swipe-type keyboards rather useless on tablets because of the size of the device, and even though this one is smaller I still never want to use them here either.
Try Swiftkey Tablet X or Thumb Keyboard, much better for me (I would think the majority of Android tablet owners are using one of these two keyboards).

Dolphin seems to have issues at the moment, I'm seeing reports like that across multiple device forums, try Opera Mobile instead?
I've not had any problems with app crashes myself.
Anyone tried playing YouTube videos in a browser in Galaxy Tab 7.7? I've tried stock browser and Dolphin Browser, but neither seems to be able to play YouTube videos. (I was able to do so when I was using Galaxy S II without the YouTube app.) The latest version of Adobe Flash Player is installed. Any ideas?

congrats. I would have never brought this into my local AT&T store, they would have tried to make sure it never gets used on their network, and would have threatened me to cancel my unlimited data plan (grandfathered). you're a brave man. they were very nice to help you.
I might actually want the 7.7, if it had a thin/slim bezel.

I'm shopping for a new tablet but before I drop $700+ (tablet & goodies) I have a few questions.
Have the I/O issues been resolved?
Seen multiple posts on multiple reviews about case cracking problems, especially when using the dock/keyboard. is this limited or a real issue people are seeing?
overall opinion? Im not buying apple anything.. so if not this tablet, which one? i want 1920 res, 64gb x 64gb storage (sd), hdmi out.. basically all the goodies.
money isnt a factor in my consideration. i want a stable product that can hold up to daily use.
appreciate your comments.

fixable but voids warranty. and then there's the poor quality control. I suggest buying from a place where you can return the tablet if you get a bad one.
I really really want to like this tablet. just I'm scared I'll get a bad one :/ (I'll be buying overseas as local Asus only distributes the one with dock and I don't need one)
there's also looking elsewhere
Buy it from best buy if u can. They honor the manufacturer warranty for a year so u can swap it out if it breaks or gets discontinued for a new model.

so lets go real world use.. not benchmarks. what does the i/o issue really mean to me? its not going to be a file server.
youtube, gmail, web browsing, watching movies, listening to music. thats about it.
slow file xfers or actual performance issues opening/watching files?
bluetooth keyboard issues still? (lag)
network performance?

I was a original Transformer Prime owner and that thing was a nightmare! I had random reboots, screen tearing, CRAP Wifi, Non existent GPS, force closes up the ass. It as horrible. Best Buy let me exchange it after the Prime was discontinued and I got the Infinity. I have had almost NO issues with this thing. I cant remember the last time this thing reboot on me, if ever. Wifi and GPS are great. When Jelly Bean came out, they keyboard lagged a bit but ASUS quickly came out with a patch update and that was resolved. I don't really know what the I/O issue is...dont seem any issues. I use my tablet for some gaming, browsing the net, gmail/email, music and youtube and its been nothing but great for me. Honestly, Buy the tablet, if you dont like it...return it within the 30 day period. I highly recommend this tablet over the Ipads and most android tablets. If you dont like it, check out the nexus 10...

You tap some link in the browser or you want to scroll and nothing happens for several seconds.
"Browser is not responding, do you want to close it?"
Sometimes it also closes by itself because of some unfixed bug.
Of course that does not happen all the time, otherwise I would have thrown my TF700 out of the window already, but it happens too often to not notice. And that is already after unlocking (voiding warranty) and installing CleanROM. Trying to use some Data-to-SD solution failed because the MicroSD interface is unreliable (at least with my SanDisk 32 GB UHS-1 card) and hangs after some time or produces lots of I/O errors in the log.
Do not buy this tablet if you want a mostly problem-free device.
The nexus 10 is a decent tablet.. but the lack of external ports bothers me. No sd card.. and i believe no hdmi. both deal breakers for me. ive read that the toshiba excite 10 is doing pretty well (and has amazing sound).
ill probably buy this tablet, i didnt see any upcoming asus tablets anytime soon. saw rumors of a 13ish inch tablet, but no date listed.

I was prepared to unlock and void warranty but if doing that doesn't really fix the IO issues, I think Apple will get my money again. I've looked at the Huawei FHD but the lack of community support is a downside. if ever the tab has problems, then I'm stuck. I've looked at the Acer A700 but it's looks cheap and the lower CPU speed is a negative of course.
:/
anything quad core and faster then 1.2 is fine with me.. a 1920 screen is important as is storage. just not a lot of options on the table there.
might just buy a nexus for now and gift it when something really nice comes around. im not interested in a windows or a ios option at this time.
I have the 700, prime, and nexus 10. My prime after latest JB is actually quite useful now. Rarely I get any ANR nowadays but still do happen from time to time. Theres still def some IO issue still. The 700 on JB I find not as smooth as the Prime and I never get any ANR but it does lag some when I'm trying to do things too fast like open a bunch of stuff one after another. I have to let it catch up. From what I hear about putting custom rom is it will eliminate most IO but not completely. The nexus 10 however is a beast. No lag, no ANRs, I can open a lot of apps and def no IO issue. The only thing I dont like is the screen is LCD which makes it sort of dull looking since the black levels arent as good as the Asus. Also lack of keyboard dock which extends battery and memory and makes typing easy. Charge times are too long with micro usb.
For basic browsing, watching movies, casual gaming, then the tf700 is a good device. Better contrast screen and I can barely tell the difference in sharpness between it and the nexus 10. But I think the keyboard dock and its features is what sets it apart from the nexus 10.

Actually it is truly amazing. The vast majority are flawless...most people that post non-development related stuff here are posting complaints...looking for sympathy or corroboration, or better yet, solutions.
Unlocked, rooted and ROMed, this is the fastest tablet I've ever used. That includes most that are not in my signature as well as the ones I own.
I found a 32GB Champagne tablet on Adorama for $499 WITH keyboard. Just recently posted a new thread in the General section with a link if anyone's interested. I paid over $100 more at Best Buy for a Grey one that I'll be returning.
If you take the risk and root it, then you should get this tablet. If you expect a problem free experience from stock ROM, stay away. I only use my tf700 for browsing, reading books, YouTube.. and it's so sluggish and unresponsive. You tap the address bar, lag until the keyboard pops up. You then decide to go back to home screen, 2-3 secs until it registers your choice, then a couple more second to redraw the home screen. This doesn't happen all the time but even occasionally is way way too much. Also forget about doing anything while you're downloading or updating apps, it basically freezes the tablet.
The latest update improved things somewhat but not enough. I was planning to hold off getting clean ROM until after the rumored upcoming 4.2 update, but this is so annoying I'm losing my patience.

Just wondering if you happen to have a nexus 10 as I dont see it in your signature. The nexus 10 is a beast IMO compared to my nexus 7 with cleanrom. Games are super fluid and I can run a lot of things in the background and it doesn't really slow down. I assume tf700 with cleanrom is going to be similar to nexus 7 with cleanrom.
