The Best Smartphone Right Now? - General Questions and Answers

Hey Team
I'm looking at android phones for a friend, and he isn't sure which one to purchase.
We've been looking at the Nexus however the fact that it doesn't support SD cards is a no-go.
So I was wondering what's the best android phone out there right now? The ROM it comes with doesn't matter that much as I'll just flash it anyway.
I've been searching around all day and I can't find a definitive answer to which phone is the best as of today.
Any help would be appreciated.
Kind regards
Neefy

Wrong forum. This is an Android question not a device specific qiestion.
SGSII rules the waves here.
Edit: has this thread been moved already or am I losing my marbles and it was already in the right place? Lol

As for right now the Galaxy s2 is the way to go buddy. Big nice screen, awesome battery, good developer support (comparatively), the Exynos chipset, nice light sturdy build, etc. And due for an ICS update (eventually). That will probably change when the wave of Quad core phones come out. Wait for the Galaxy S3, being announced the first half of 2012

Agreed with the above. As an owner of said phone, it really is great and well supported.
I made the switch from a HTC Wildfire to my current phone (SGSII) around 9 months ago. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned and until something really epic comes out, this is the badboy for me
You will probably be waiting until the end of the year for something that's truly better in every department and that you can actually buy, not just an announcement.

best phone to get in the next 3 months?

Looking to upgrade from my Tilt2; (exchange email/calender/contacts auto-sync is important)
My initial choices (carrier ATT)
Infuse 4g (4.5")
Galaxy sgII 4g and dual core processor, and android 2.3(4.3")
` - after September 18th for AT&T I hear
or wait for a future phone:
I.E.
Nexus,
Google,
HTC Titan,
Other's on the near Horizon;
etc.
I don't want to bite the bullet on yesterdays technology if something is 2-3 months away (since I will wait 2 years for another upgrade); I don't believe LTE will take hold until another year or two anyway, so that will be a good time to upgrade again.
Any insight or opinions are appreciated.
coming from the captivate to the infuse, i was VERY happy with the infuse.
not duel core but still more than fast enough for a phone( but i too will be subdued by the Nexus Prime when it arrives) but for now. the Infuse is great.
I'm thinking iPhone 5

Check back to this thread in 3 months. 3 Months is like 3 years in technology at the rate these companies are spitting out smart phones. The SII will be old news in 3 months

well. i was happy with my infuse. dont get me wrong. great phone. but it looks like samsung just left us hanging and we will be on 2.2 for good. because of the upcoming phones. the galaxy note will kill every android phone out right now. even the upcoming galaxy s ii. dont get me wrong. we have GREAT developers here. but the note is sooooo much better than the infuse and the capitvate and galaxy s i all together. it has a 1.4 dual core. and tons more. http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxynote/
Or the nexus prime if it is.t verizon only

honestly I really like the galaxynote, but I'm just not sure I could fit that thing in my pocket or if I can get AT&T to carry it with 4g speeds... I'll have to go see how huge that thing would be to tote around.
Note: I don't use belt clips or holsters, I normally put a something on it to protect it and toss it in my pocket.

Yeah I have no idea when the nexus prime comes out, or what the specs or advantage would really be with that device... Complete unknown, just in case you guys knew more about it or other devices coming up I posted. Thanks for the feedback.

Small or Big
If 4 inch is fit for you, Xiaomi Phone is a good choice,
(1.5G dual core, 8Mp camera, 4 inch TFT, MIUI)
it's very cheap about US$310 no contact.
If you love big screen,, Galaxy Note is better choice.
5.3 inch 1280x800 screen, 1.5G dual core. wow! I will sell my
infuse 4G to buy this one when this phone available in my region.
What has this to do with the Infuse? Like appallohadas mentioned, post in General for discussion like this.

[Q] best phone to get in the next 3 months?

Looking to upgrade from my Tilt2; (exchange email/calender/contacts auto-sync is important). Also important, GPS, phone usage(lol), internet browsing, typing for texting, and emails. Camera.

First off, someone can't tell you the best phone to get. Everyone is different and sees things differently. One thing that you see necessary and better than something else, could very well be a different view than someone else has. That's why carriers make different phones. Not everyone will like, for example, Sammy's Galaxy Note, so they also released other phones around the same time.
If you're on Verizon, I'd say wait. The Bionic is out today, but you should wait until the Primes(Droid or Nexus) and the Vigor, and maybe the Titan come out. Then you'll be able to make a fair decision since you can actually test out the phone, see what type of dev support it has here, etc.
Best way to find the best phone for YOU is to go out and try them.
Yes, per my post it is AT&T for the carrier.
Of those devices you listed do you know that they are coming out for ATT and when?
Next, asthetics are less critical than functionality to me. Nonetheless I have big hands, and as I mentioned I use a tilt2, and although once I've narrowed this down I will go put the final contenders in my hand. I'm not going to waste my time doing that until I've got a list of devices narrowed down based on performance and functionality. (besides the dealers don't seem to know much about the devices, which is my I'm posting here!!!) Lastly, most all of the objectives I have for evaluating performance and function cannot be tested in the store... and there would not be enough time in the store if I could, lol. This is where research comes into play.
All opinions welcome thanks for sharing your preferences!!!
For AT&T, the Galaxy S 2 appears to be the absolute best phone coming in the next 3 months. The Infuse, if it were updated to Android Gingerbread, would be just as good...maybe better because of the larger display.
I am not exactly sure when the Galaxy S 2 comes out, if its in the next 3 months, i would get it. That is my opinion, I am using the Galaxy S, so i kind of have a biased opinion. The phone is great, it has its flaws though, as does every other device on the market. Overall though, it is a great device and i know the Galaxy S 2 will only be better.
Thanks for the input, yes, I was surprised to see that the newer phone drops from 4.5 to 4.3", but the hardware and software are better on paper.
Supposedly the GS2 comes out after Sept 18th, even if it turns out to be Mid October that is soon enough for me. I'll go put one in my hand in October, and see what the latest news is for November/December and make my "final answer".
I really want a GS2 but im not sure if my cellular company is even going to get the GS2, if they do, it will be one with less features. I hope helped you like you were looking for, I cant wait to see what others suggest, hopefully some good ones.

Oh couldn't tell since you mentioned Verizon smart phones. The Vigor will probably have a AT&T counterpart...may be later down the line though. Seems like HTC likes to keep similar phones on all 4 carriers.
best get the iphone 5
Palm Treo, they're very reliable and offer a wide range of modern features..Though not as appealing as a iPhone 5 or Optimus or Prime, it's still quite the contender. The Palm OS contains features for the business person and many good classic games like PacMan or Tetris. Hope this post gives you an insight on the best phone for you.

What's wrong with offering my honest opinion? He did say the best phone, and I gave him a top notch choice . The treo can hold its ground against the scary iPhone 5G or any fancy dual core device, it does feature 3D accelerated graphics, which is also avail on iPhone, making these very similar in specs.

final conclusion, there should be 3-4 big smart phone releases, but likely not all will be out until beginning to mid of November. So I'm going to wait to find out more about all of their specs once released, as well as put a few of them in my hand once they hit stores.
I think for me the main choices will be between the HTC Titan, the GS2, and the Nexus Prime (or whatever name it finally has); If I wasn't so anti-apple, the Iphone5 will also be a contender and should be released within a month.

What Would You Do? (WWYD)

Hey guys, I have a good friend that has an amazing offer for me. He is able to get phones for nothing basically and I was curious if you guys could help me out.
I don't like to leech with comments like these, but this is my first leech XD.
I am rooting phones for him and I have done like 10 different ones so far, and he has offered me any phone I want...I love my inspire, but it is already being outdated by the tegra 2's and the tegra 3's coming soon.
Basically, should I go for the Samsung Galaxy SII or wait for the nexus prime? I know there isnt much information on the prime, but it is probably going to be announced at Samsungs event next week. I know someone will be like, "oh just get both", but that is rude to my friend.
I debated on putting this in the SGSII forum and this one, but I said whatever if the mods dont like it, then they can delete it.
Wait for the prime, sometimes phones that are hyped up overshadow other phones. I would definitely wait for the prime because the inspire can easily do as much as the sg2
Prime. i agree with Mister J. The Inspire is a great phone. The Prime will be a very future proof phone because of its 1.5 dual core, a Nexus Device and it will be first in line for Android updates. I have an upgrade and i was very tempted to get the sgs2, but i decided to wait
I would see if you could get an IOU as all the mentioned phones will be outdated once the quad core becomes the standard is less then a year. Until we get a standard base no phone will be future proff. With the way tech is moving the updates will be fast so now is the time to sit back and watch or you will be getting every new device that comes out over the next year due to it having major hardware upgrades
Go wih the prime bro and then help me out with a new phone too

Go for the GS2. Everything about the Prime is speculation and you could be waiting for months. The GS2 is plenty viable and will be for a while.
There isn't enough difference for me to get the II. Stay with the Inspire until something really different comes along. It will be within 2-3 months.

Farewell One S Users !

Hey guys, Just letting you all know I will be ditching the One S tomorrow... I've got the Galaxy Note.
I know your thinking ''WTF?!?!?!'' But i had so many issues with the One S (signal related) it was driving me mad, I was offered the S3 (at a hefty price) or the Note, for free, So I took it.
When I first saw the Note I thought ''OMG Thats Hideous, Its waaaay too big'' But the more I saw it, the more I liked it !
My other contract is up soon so I will get the SGS3 then.
So thanks to every one who helped me since day one, I will be moving on to the Note forums as of tomorrow
I will still keep my Help Thread updated as much as possible, And will continue to help as and when I can.
Take care & good bye

NFC, No-NFC? TouchWiz, Sense? LTE, No-LTE...
The GSIII and the One XL have little to differenciate, but we are talking about the One S here.
There's a huge difference but its value depends on the user and options.

hey azzledazzle,
i really appreciated the way you where getting on top of the issue with the virtual button mess, really liked your input. i counted you in for one who's pushing the issue further with HTC.
So, i find it a bit hard that you "gave up" on it but totally understandable on the other side. My One S is literally doing my head in (wife threw it at me in anger) with that perfectly unusable state its in. It sits there, playing with its screen and buttons just like its gotten its own mind but i cant make it do anything else most of the time.
So if it was like that for you, i can only repeat myself: i do understand. Still i find it a bit sad.
my opinion on the note: am working on it for my brother and i find it disappointing. Samsungs surface is stupid, KIES is like having one leg amputated, cant really go anywhere with that code, the phone hides anyones head while at it (just for the lolz of it), its too big. seriously.
And as a tablet, its too small. But as i said, my opinion
Good luck on your new adventures mister Azzle!
Hey mate,
Have fun with the Note, its been my primary device for 7 months now. Its a great phone. After a while its size becomes normal.
As for the comments above, i find it a perfect size, its like having a tab on you at all times. My only gripe is touchwiz, i do prefer sense.
Peace!

I can't say as I blame you. I getting pretty sick of my One S. Brilliant phone except it has next door to useless signal reception. It spends 3 to 4 hours a day without signal - which irritates when I know signal is good. What to replace with I dunno but this issue is likely to sicken me off HTC. Won't be the Note though as far too big for me
Galaxy nexus
Same here. After two months I am getting rid of it for Galaxy nexus $349 from the play store. We have minimal support for this device. Thanks to cm9 devs anyways.
It make no good to have powerfull phone that cannot multitask or have no completed custom ROM. And now Jelly Bean. By the time ONE S gets JB Google will announce next nexus probably this fall with KEY LIME 5.0
Better have slightly outdated hardware that prrobably will not be much noticable and have up to date software, vanilla or custom ROM with no issues.
And HTC and their delayed kernel source release. SIII released it before device was on the market. That how you get developers love.
I really wanted to love this phone, but yesterday I had a chance to exchange it for a new one in the box to see if it fixed my signal/wifi issues or get the Galaxy S3. Every smartphone I have owned has been HTC so I was nervous, but I opted for the S3 and all I can say is wow. It's an awesome phone and completely blows the One S out of the water for my needs.
I knew going into the the One S I would be making concessions on things I wanted such as an SD card slot and removable battery. Its a super sexy phone, but if you can't use it as a phone it does me no good, too many dropped/missed calls and poor wifi. I hope they do fix the signal issues for those who keep it and I'm glad some people were experiencing no problems.
HTC really needs to up their game on the next round of phones, I gave them extensive feedback online and they even called to follow up, which was nice. I told them I have owned a G1, MT3GS, G2, MT4GS and One S and enjoyed them all with the exception of the OS. I did have a seperate issue with them concerning the MT4GS and replacement parts that irritated me as well.
Best of luck to you all and thank you for all the help and resources from this forum!

The Infuse can't go on forever, and people get new phones eventually. It's just the nature of tech. I myself moved on from the Infuse, but have fond memories of it, since it was my first smartphone. But greener pastures were calling me. I now have the Moto G, which is a great phone for the price. It absolutely smokes the Infuse speed-wise. And as soon as the Nexus 6 comes out, I'm getting it. Yeah, I've become a performance whore. :victory:
But I will still come here to see how long the Infuse will live on. I say 6 months to a year, and these threads will be pretty much dead.

I agree. I really wish I had time to get into development for this phone as I will likely be using it until the hardware quits on me and I'm forced to upgrade.
Are there any other Infuse related forums out there? XDA has always seemed like the most active, but I've never really looked for an alternative.

i too have moved on to a moto razr hd....doesn't even compare. the kernel is really outdated, i recently changed the battery from the original but i found that the batt life was just not sufficient with the new roms. i have mine on infinitum rom which seems to be the best upgrade for me from gb vis a vis battery. my moto lasts easily all day and more....but it was a great way to learn modding.
i have 2 new devices but still keep my infuse updated with the latest BeanStalk (would perfer omni or pa or something not so heavy)thats not to say i dont love beanstalk and scotts work or appreciate it, as i do i just wish there were more options to flash.
atm have my sIII running vanir
and my Nexus 7 running Omni, Ubuntu touch, PA, and slimkat... (thanks to multirom)
All devices must one day die... It's an unavoidable part of technology.

There would be one more ROM that is active in the thread if the Carbon ROM maintainer could get the data/radio issues he's having sorted out, but he doesn't use the infuse as a main phone, so doesn't have a sim for it which means people have to test for him and I haven't seen any fixes pushed to their gerrit either recently. And plus I don't know if he has any help from any other devs. Oh well, as you've all said, she has to die some day. I myself am looking for a new phone, but just because the infuse is reaching end of life in terms of development. Otherwise I love this phone

Yeah, the infuse was the best phone I had too, up until I got my Moto G. After trying out some of the new phones a few months back, I could no longer hold onto the infuse. Things were slow and slightly flaky at times. Sure, it's a usable phone, but I wanted more. I wanted native KitKat, speed, more RAM, upgrades from the manufacturer, and to be more future-proof.
And after I get the Nexus 6, it will be the best I've had. A year later, something else will be the best, and it goes on and on.................
Just because the infuse is the best you've had, doesn't make it any more desirable at this point. Not putting you down for using it, as I had it for almost 2 yrs. and serviced me well. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before this infuse forum becomes a ghost town.

You're better off waiting for the next HTC One and saving your money. Everything becomes dated so quickly these days.

true since the GS5 is already gonna be released (to the public) and is the new one gonna be called the HTC Two? cause that would be funny
the infuse was an interim device to get an att 4g samsung phone out the door before the s2, which was released shortly thereafter. the result was a phone with the internals of the s1 (processor, ram, ect) and externals of the s2 (screen, camera, housing, ect) and of course a 4g hspa+ radio. the phone was an accidental success, selling 9 million devices, probably due to good reviews, superfluous awards, and a steep price drop after the s2 was released. att tried to copy the idea, albeit less successfully, with the skyrocket in an attempt to release a 4g lte phone. but theres no need for interim devices anymore to push a new radio technology as all phones since the s3 (the most successful smartphone ever) have had the latest and greatest lte radios.
the new htc will be called "the new htc one" a la the "the new ipad". its a terrible name and wont help the struggling company push new hardware. which is sad as it looks to be a very nice phone.
ill be saying goodbye to my infuse tomorrow as att has decided to replace it with an s4. ive been putting off buying a new phone. mostly because i have wanted to keep my options open and not sign a new contract. and ive been nitpicking on new devices as an excuse not to buy one. but the infuse is getting old an is scraping the minimum requirements for android and its getting time to upgrade. newer phones look like they will have a longer shelf life as even newer versions provide very little reason to upgrade. the s5 has almost nothing better than on the s4. its bigger, thicker, and heavier than the s4 to make room for a minuscule update in screen size, with rather useless features like a heart rate monitor (which you can do with you camera now anyways) and a terrible swipey finger print reader. you can also pick up a moto g, a very powerful phone, for chump-change.

heh. id probably pass. my brother had one. it didnt quite get the development it need.
I like my Infuse, but I have since moved on to the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide (a phone that is just as old). I wanted something a little smaller (one that could be carried in a lanyard case), but more importantly I missed having a physical keyboard (which is why I hung on to my LG Breeze feature phone for so long). The MT4GS covers both these things, and I'm mostly happy with it (battery drain with CM 10.1 is at the top of my annoyances).
I have been thinking of what to do with the Infuse next. Currently it is a media player and a backup phone, but I think I may hand it down to my sister, as she has a bit of an interest in smartphones now. However I'm having trouble parting ways with it. Oh well.
Sad to see a forum dwindle away to nothing.
I agree, it's very sad. But, time will always move forward and technology goes with it. All the devs for this device has made the infuse a legendary device, and I hate to see it become a thing of the past.

Don't play Taps too early. The latest ROM, 4.4.275, has proven to be quite a solid release for Infuse. Don't be surprised when Android 4.4.3 makes it to the Infuse.
