Is Google Wallet working now? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Flashed new from tonight and the wallet app seems to work now. Was able to activate and fund Google prepaid card. It never worked before.

I still get Prepaid is unavailable when I try.

Still no support for rooted phones. Eh.

Flashed Bugless Beast and prepaid card is available and now funded. Will try NFC in the morning on way to work and report findings.

Do you need to have a copy of working Wallet (via Titanium Backup)?
I tried all types of methods and it either gives me 'incompatible update' or 'packaged signed different'
It either won't let me use the older version or give me error message when I try to update to the latest version.

I tried from previously working (but not pre-paid card add-able) and update via market = incompatible update
I tried from scratch = incompatible update
I tried flashing the CM9_preinstall.zip file and update via market = insecure image

OK, then i would suggest removing the app, getting the apk from one of the forums (I believe its in the Themes & Apps section, if anyone knows for sure where it is, please correct me I will take no offense ) and re-install it either by adb pushing it to /system/app or copying it there with root explorer and rebooting, or just stick in in your SD card and installing it from there.

[Q] rooted nexus s and ota update

I just received the ota for 2.3.4 . Im wondering if my rooted phone will update correctly, Im still rooted on 2.3.2 stock rom, now my issue is that when i rooted the phone i didnt rename the recovery img or whatever it is your suppose to do... I never lost root, i just couldn't boot into recovery.( it was my first time rooting and im surprised it didn't brick in the first place so i didn't wanna go back in and F it up anymore)
now i know if i let the update install i will loose the root, i'm not really worried about that I just want to know if it will install correctly? and also if it does will my phone basically be like a new nexus s out of the box? like will i loose all my data, pics, music all that good stuff??

If you do the OTA, you will lose root. Do it manually.
I mean seriously, you've managed to root your phone. The idea of puttiing the 2 files in your sd card (the 2.3.4 update zip file and the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file) shouldn't sound too hard to do.
After flashing the update via clockwork recovery...
(Note: if you try and install it via Rom Manager it will reboot by itself after installing the update. Therefore, losing root. So I suggest doing it manually: powering down and going into recovery mode.)
Instead of pressing on reboot you would then go and flashing the other file (su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip) that's already in there.
Once that's done you can reboot.
(This maintain permanent root.)
Download and install Root Explorer app from Android Market
Open Root Explorer and navigate to etc directory
Tap on the gray box that says Mount R/W
Tap and hold on the file install-recovery.sh and rename this file to install-recovery.sh.old
Once renamed, download and install the app called ROM Manager from Android Market
Once installed, open ROM Manager app and choose Flash ClockworkMod Recovery option.
Now you have 2.3.4 and permanent root. Don't make it harder than what it seems.

updating the market

So I just got and activated this phone 2 days ago. for some reason, the Market app will not update itself. idk why, it's always doen that on my phones automatically before. in fact, when I just gave my friend my old discontinued 600Mhz LG Ally, It auto updated the Market only minutes after he signed in. what could be causing this?
Dunno - This device hasn't updated the market on my end either, had to do it manually.
You can see my sig 'how to script a market update' for info on how to write a system update to put a new market version on, or in the thread you can download the pre-made package. The version is a bit older now, but thereafter it'll automatically update itself like normal.
I believe this is something on Google's end, where they rolled out updating to the new market by product model - I know they were messing with my Nook Color for a while and it was a pain in the ... to get the market to work in any kind of decent capacity for a while. I'd assume they just haven't gotten to forcing an update on Google's end for our phone.
I used to hate having to swap to the new market, and stubbornly tried to keep the old market for as long as I could - but the new one has grown on me and now I prefer it.
I hated the new market when it first came out on my Sidekick, but not because of the style. I hated how buggy and glitchy it was, constantly force closing and screwing up downloads. Made me curse the hell out of Google all the time for not testing their crap. but once they released a few more updates, all of that stopped. took a few months though.
Seriously, it was just awful. there were times I would just leyt my phone sit there for hours while plugged in, having not touched it or turned on any apps literally for many hours. then all of a sudden, the phone would do a "bzz, Bzzbzzbzz" which is a feature Samsung made to let you know something crashed. sure enough, it would be the market, which I never even opened but somehow managed to randomly find an error to crash itself with.
Root your phone and update it manually. The new Market format actually got better after multiple tries by Google.

I actually just downloaded the .apk from Android Community. I'm wondering though, it it safe to install? I'm not rooted yet, probably won't find the time til the end of the week with finals. I'm wondering about whether installing will cause me to not get further market updates once they're out..

If you want to stay local I made a flashable market in this thread a while ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268661
It's attached to the bottom of the first post (which explains in detail how to make your own).
If you flash the dark_market file, it will auto-update after the first time you open it and from then forward.

Well, the market is a system app, and the only way to mess with those is to have root that I know of...
Unless you can flash an insecure boot partition somehow and then get adb remount access...
Not sure how to go about that if S-On though.

Mobile AP restriction

Good afternoon,
I currently have a samsung infuse which I love very much. It is an At&t, which of course has an AP mobile function. Only thing is I am using Claro mobile, which of course isn't apart of the AT&T network. About 5 days ago, I rooted my phone. Then downloaded "titanium backup". In which everything worked wonderfully. I was able to freeze the thethering option which allowed me to use the mobile AP feature of the phone.
I then had to do a hard reboot on my phone, which of course wiped my system clean. After repeating the entire process (root, titanium) now when i load titanium back it says "sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will not *work*! Please verify that your room is rooted and includes busybox, and try again.
I am so lost as to what has happened as nothing has truly changed. My firmware is still 2.2.1 Could someone please help me. Thanks in advance.
Make sure superuser app exists. If it does update the binaries in the menu. If that didn't work then you need to re root. Might also have to force an update on the super user app. I did once.

Thank you for your response. I was not able to get it to working using your method. So what I did was upgraded to gingerbread 2.3.6 Yet all I want to do is be able to use the mobile AP. I d/l super manager 3.0 in which I was able to find the tethering manager. I froze it, but when I go to Mobile AP it says " MOBILE DATA IS NOT AVAILABLE OR INVALID SIM" Could someone please assist me with this. Even if it is downgrading to another firmware. I really really need to be able to use this Mobile AP. Thanks in advance.

How to disable update notification

Hey guys,
First off, I am an admitted noob. From what I can tell, updating to 2.20/4.04 will un-root your device so I'm looking for a way to disable the update notification. Is there a way to get it to stop bugging me until 2.20 is rooted?
Also, how do upgrades generally work when you're rooted and want to maintain root?
Thanks!
Hey mine was bugging me and I just cleared the data for updater and it hasn't bugged me for the last two days.
Settings > Apps > All > Updater
Then clear everything you can (cache, data)

To flash a rom you need to unlock the bootloader which will wipe all user data not your sd card just data.
Sent from my Nocturnalized Beast
Normally with OTAs, after the OTA is downloaded, you will have the option to install or not. Just cancel, then delete the file from the SD card. Somebody will have to verify this is the case (haven't gotten the notification, personally), but that is normally how HTC does it. You have to be really careful not to hit the wrong option. But once you've cancelled the install, you won't get any more notifications for this particular OTA.
Really, the "settings" method suggested by footbal9584 seems much safer (as a wrong button press will actually install the OTA for my way). But if his method doesn't work, you might try mine.
Also, all the info you will probably ever need about unlocking the bootloader, flashing ROMs, etc. can be found in my Index thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
There you will find a method for keeping your user data while doing the bootloader unlock. But honestly, I'd recommend not going through the hassle. If you intend to flash custom ROMs, you should wipe data anyway.

Is there a good way to backup/restore? I've seen both NANDroid and Titanium Backup Pro recommended on here. Which one is best for backing up all my apps, settings, etc. so I don't have to redo all that after I unlock?
EDIT: Whoops -- didn't see post above. The method there uses dd to do a block-level backup -- does one of the above methods work, or not so much?

Nandroid is a full backup of the ROM, all user data, apps, and settings. If you are flashing custom ROMs, that is not what you want for restoring user data, etc. But its a good idea to do a nandroid backup of the stock ROM, in case you want to go back.
Titanium Backup is great for backing up user apps, and some settings. Some people use it to restore various settings, but this can be problematic, as all ROMs don't treat this data the same. Personally, I just use Titanium to backup and restore my apps and app save data, and sometimes WiFi and Bluetooth pairings. But I configure everything else manually. Usually takes me about 20 minutes to do it all when moving between ROMs.

Anyone know how effective this is? I postponed the update again today because I want to keep root like any sensible xda member, but it told me I cannot postpone any longer after this and it will just have to option to install now. I don't have my computer right now (at HP repair center) so unlocking bootloader isn't an option right now

Did not work for me -- I started getting chain notifications, hella annoying.
NOTE: even when the only available button is 'Install', the back button on your phone still works.
If I freeze the updater, will it break my phone?
I do not know I highly doubt it would but no guarantees. I cleared my data before it downloaded anything it just started the "there is an update you cannot use tour phone during install do you want to install now" I postponed it 8 hours a few times, but then just cleared the data and still haven't gotten any notifications.
Maybe see of what the other user said is correct maybe the update was downloaded to your phone and you need to remove the file before it will leave you alone.

At least on other devices, if you let the OTA download, then cancel it, it should stop the notifications. Can you confirm or deny this?
You can then just find the file on the internal SD and delete it. At least that is how it worked on the HTC Flyer.
If you can confirm, this would probably be a handy method for others. At least one other person is asking how to cancel the install (and other that want to stop the notifications, I'm sure): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29903041
Update: nevermind I restarted my phone today and ad soon as it booted up I got the is your last time to postpone message so I cleared updater again but now every time I unlock my phone I'm prompted to update and just have to push the back button. Sorry I'll keep looking into it.

try uninstalling ota and TWC then make sure you delete all data of both.
1) install OTA first! run it, make sure it says your temparaly unrooted
2) then install TWC
