It's not that Google didn't help much it's just that you didn't read what was there. MD5 Checksums can be generated from a source file, kind of like the original rom file before it's uploaded. It's an identifier, a bit for bit one at that, change one little bit of that file, and the md5 will change too.
Before a file is hosted, an MD5 is generated and posted on the web. You then download the file, and run an MD5 check to see if yours matches the one that the author posted. If they match, you're good to go, if they don't, you'd best not flash that file. Sometimes, errors can happen while downloading, and an MD5 is the only way to see those errors. You wouldn't want to flash a broken file, would you?

Q&A section is for questions, so no need to apologise because you have every right to be asking how to do this.
All you need to do, is to navigate to this page: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/MD5-Check.shtml and download the software. Then input then md5 checksum that is given by the rom developer, and open up the rom you downloaded within the md5 checker application. Check for md5 match, if it's good then you're safe to flash

Kinda hard to believe that you have close to 1500 posts now yet you don't seem to know what an MD5 is.
anyways....
Dev will post an MD5 hash
After downloading, use an MD5 hash calculator to calculate the hash of your downloaded file. (Google for one. There's lost of free MD5 Calculators out there)
Compare the hashes that the dev posted and the one you got from the calculator
If they're exactly the same, you can go ahead and flash the ROM or whatever package that is

Sorry to butt in, but I've never checked an md5 hash of any of the toms I've flashed. And I've flashed a tonne. What's the reason?

It just makes sure that the file you downloaded is an exact copy of what the dev uploaded
Usually, its the same.. but if it is different, you risk bricking your device! Especially with RUUs.

Always check (and double.. triple..) the md5 when flashing crucial parts of your phone such as: radio, firmware, hboot, recovery etc

Yes this. If the MD5 checksum is wrong, DO NOT FLASH!!! Re-download the file and try it again. I believe it could potentially brick your phone. The only way to fix a bricked phone is to send it back to the manufacturer!

When the RUU's MD5 isn't the same as the given one (so bad download or what ever), it won't even run. So actually you don't have to check MD5's with RUU's.. But, for firmware packages for instance, it is mandatory because of the chance of bricking your lovely Sensation.

If the dev posted a hash, it's probably best to check whatever that file may be. You really won't want to end up with a lovely and expensive brick

There was an RUU posted not long ago on the development subforum (the first ICS leak from HTC - 3.12), and the hash that was on the uploaded file was incorrect. The RUU did it's job, but phones were bricked. The link was removed and corrected so that the md5 checksum did match. This means that even with RUUs you have to check as they can still install, but may brick your device.

When this topic was new, there was a file with that, but now there is only a file with this custom ROM.
So why did you cause all the grief in the first place?

But if You want there is a similar stuff available for everyone

Flashing radio

Just a quick question. In the tutorial for flashing radio..it says to do it through the adb comments. Why? Can't we just flash in clockwork? I tried the adb method n didn't seem to work then flashing in clockwork instead seemed to changed the radio when I look in the hboot screen.
So does it work just flashing in recovery?

Hi,
Not wishing to alarm you,but flashing a radio, there is a chance of bricking.
There are 2 ways of flashing.
1.PG58IMG.zip on your sd card
2.ADB method.
1. is easier but carries a greater risk than 2.
Either way, make sure you do a MD5 checksum of your radio image.
Thx. Luckily it worked with the pmg method. But how does one check that md sum? I saw it but didn't know what I was supposed to do.

Hi,
Md5 checksum is a way of checking the integrity of a file after download.
Any bad download will soon be revealed
Google it.
There are lots of free apps available.

Help Needed

Hi Guys,
I am new to this flashing ROMs, I have a HTC sensation and I used the Rovolutionary.io tutorial to S-Off my phone.
Since then I Downloaded the OTA Telstra ICS update as the current custom ROMs I have researched have had bugs with the WiFi tether (could be wrong).
I decided to use the OrDroid V9.0.0 ROM, but when I download the file from xda, It downloads it and does not stay zipped. I compress the file to .zip.
I tried to install the OTA and it comes up with the blue droid and white triangle and just freezes.
I then tried to install Ordroid through recovery and it gives me a message installation aborted. Please help as I cannot seem to update any way.
Cheers
Did you try downloading zip of ordroid instead if you zip those files in package?
When you get installation aborted message, it means zip file is corrupt. I had same issue with other rom and then I realised downloaded rom and installed in recovery. Hope this help.

Uhm no it isn't. These are just patches to the old base (4.0.4)..
We need the /system folder after the OTA has been applied. :good:

^^^This.
I'll explain briefly for people who don't know. OTA files contain lots of .p patch files which are generated by diffs of 2 builds (obviously HTC devs have the source code so they can do this) then compiling all the changes made to a file into 1 .p file. This helps minimize the OTA file size - e.g ever wondered why RUU for Sensation ICS is ~450mb but the OTA was only ~230mb?
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using xda premium
Edit: The hell? how did my post duplicate itself
What Jonny is saying is that the ota simply adds on to the files that are already on the one s. The full system dump could be much bigger than that ota, but to make it smaller they simply add the new things to the old things to make them work. We need the full system dump because we don't have the source code so we can't make head or tails of the ICS system dump and the ota separately.
Edit: the information above is wrong, as is the post Jonny posted twice above.
sent from my jingly bells
I hate threads like this, which give the hope for a jelly bean Rom and in the same moment destroys this instantly. Really sick. Don't do this! :banghead:
So if any one have an ONE S and provide a full system file (included old and new stuffs that have been added) we can use it for our sensation?
So... We need to wait for ruu or system dump from ville c2.
