Damn, well...that explains the recent christina hendricks pics

That's a VERY biased report. Yes, it points out some security issues on both platforms, but it never states that these issues have ever been exploited. Now we've got people running round like headless chickens thinking that every photo they've ever taken has been uploaded to some anonymous PC somewhere in the world and strangers are looking at them.
There's nothing like a good bit of sensationalist garbage reporting, thankfully.

Maybe. But the potential for misuse does exist, and it would be a bit naive to believe that no one will find and employ an unsavory use for the technology.
And, although there may be a legitimate use for such a function (permission), I can't think of any.

Of course the potential exists. It's existed as long as mobile devices and TCP/IP connections have existed and that's a very long time. I just don't like it when reporters basically make it sound like something IS happening, to everyone, all the time, when they've only just heard about it. Sensationalism, like I said.

Exclusive: Someone Is Getting All Your Data And We Know How To Stop Them!

Well well well we just found out all your data is going to an Amazon server if you updated to the new 2.3.4 EVO and Sensation users. How long you use an app, What app you are using, The fact that you are rooted, the location you are using it from etc etc (without QIC) is being uploaded to an Amazon server un-encrypted. How's that for security? However thanks to Synergy team developer TrevE users of Synergy and the upcoming Eternity ROM from Virus will be secure against this obvious infringement of your privacy. What is HTC up to? And furthermore what other manufacturers are using similar methods? One thing Trev pointed out was your warranty can be voided immediately. They know you are rooted! The repercussions of this are astounding and frankly I am proud to be breaking this story with all of the work I have done here recently speaking out when I find are data being wrongly horded and used in nefarious ways. Kudos to TrevE and Virus for showing me this and helping the community find a way to put a stop to it. This is an ongoing game people and it is the aftermarket guys like Team Synergy and even journalist like myself who are a pretty good line of defense when crap like this comes up. They have your IMEI they know your location from the cell towers in hex and they know you are rooted. The best way to defend yourself is by rooting and flashing these guys ROMS period and that's a win win. Top of the line performance and defense against heinous invasion of your privacy.
for technical details including the nefarious code you can go HERE. The user behavior logs and other info are right in the thread of our sister site InfectedROM.com
The Synergy team and Revolution for the win... oh and when your using Synergy ROM and Eternity ROM this is what HTC will see..... Beat By Team Synergy. Jokes on them. I'm certainly laughing.

I dont think so...I am curious to know also....What are they doing with this data that they have NOT asked us to collect.
I think the op is going way overboard assuming these STATISTICS are being used " nefariously " sure, point it out, bit don't start throwing out accusations without evidence that harmful acts are being perpetrated and scaring the community into a state of paranoia.
I think the OP just copied and pasted the article, so no need to blame him.
And yea, the way the article is written just makes it seem like a rant and not very credible...
dear Op,
please tell us about the services activated under account and sync. then disabled them all and see, how like magic that traffic then is gone...
LOL. This is really written in such a sensational way that it's pretty funny that I really am fifty fifty believing this post. It's like the posts on the web that mention gain six pack ABS in six weeks no exercise. Ah well. Good thing I'm rooted and failed the update.

OK, I'm calling BS, or at the very least calling it inaccurate. If you look up those IPs, they belong to amazonaws.com. If you look this up, you get Amazon Web Services. It's basically a bunch of cloud/database services they offer, for people and other companies to utilize. So while it may go to an Amazon server, it is most likely not actually going to Amazon. It is still just HTC, nothing different, just a different server. Also, WHO THE HELL CARES? It's not like it is constantly sending this data all the time. In fact, I'd be willing to bet this only gets sent when you actually submit one of those 'Tell HTC' forms that show up sometimes.
Well, one more spying us is not a problem
What an interesting post. Is there any kind of independent watchdog group who goes over all the code in these roms to see what is actually going on? I assume it's all open source, so they can't really hide what they're doing. How it works in the real world, however, I don't know.

I don't necessarily believe it either but I wonder if you guys even clicked on the link because there's actually a bunch of source there, and explanations of what happens when you delete certain files that are harvesting info, and the source code that was used to "defeat" the info harvesting behaviors. I think this is interesting at the very least, if not true even if it was definitely presented in a sensational way.
I don't particularly care WHERE the data is going, I want to know WHY it's being collected in the first place, especially if it is not vital to the functioning of our mobile devices, which it seems pretty clear to all of us, it isn't. Even if YOU don't care about your info and data being harvested by google, some of us do and many of us find it very disconcerting.
Also, a guy with 14 posts trolling and asking where "XDA is heading" am I the only one that appreciates how ridiculous that is?

Unfortunately this is the prevailing mindset in America today. We disregard our inalienable right to privacy by saying "spy away gov't, I'm not hiding anything!". It sets up a precedent which marginalizes the demand for privacy, desensitizing everyone from this right. Then, anyone who demands privacy appears to be hiding something when in reality, Uncle Sam has no goddamned business prying in my affairs without probable cause whether or not I am breaking the law.

You can't catch **** before it happens and want total privacy, doesn't work. Most Americans don't want tragedy to strike again, and this is why the American Gov't must impose this and that to make sure they cover themselves. Heaven forbid a day come where we see Pearl 9/11 2.0 and the government had the technology to prevent it, but didn't because it would "impose on the rights of the people".
Spy away... keep America safe. Simple logic, don't want something on your phone compromised? Don't keep it on your phone.

Sorry. I despise the whole 'if you have nothing to hide' BS. The government now wants to operate with privacy from the people but wants to deny our INALIENABLE right to not be spied upon ourselves. This is in complete and total opposition to the way things should be.

In order to prevent terrorism, freedoms must be bent. Fact of life in today's world. I understand the counterargument. It's just my choice to give up some of my freedoms to prevent terrorism. And I already have less freedoms than most of you as I'm an active duty US Military member.
This is basically an argument that no one can win, but it's always interesting to read others' opinions.

I was active duty military.
This is still BS.
What happens when every 10 years or so we give up just a little bit more of our freedoms for a false sense of security? Just a little more. I'm willing to give up just a little more. Repeat...and repeat....and repeat. Next thing you know they're all gone and your country has become a military state with little to no freedom of any kind. All for the sake of protecting the people, of course. Why don't we just take away everyone's ability to choose anything while we're at it. Then they'll be so much easier to manage and keep safe.
Freedoms should never be bent to protect freedom..

Why ICS is important to me.

Watch the video (In case you havent seen it yet!). In it Matias Duarte explains how the Android team is beginning to try and create a cohesive and unified atmosphere with the os at the most basic levels. I for one, am absolutely thrilled to see that they are finally going to be paying attention to design and aesthetics. Usability of the platform can also benefit from this immensely.
I am also tired of people saying "ICS isnt all that special". It really doesnt matter how "special" you think it should be. What matters is that its the next iteration of the os. We all want to have our devices updated and current. So wanting this on our devices has less to do with design in this sense, and a lot more to do with jumping on the wagon of unification. I would greatly prefer beautiful apps and ease of use over anything Gingerbread has offered us so far. Now I already know that a lot of the visual benefits of ICS come mainly from theming and such, but its profoundly more exciting when the theming itself is coming from the creators of Android and not some hard-to-find source in the app market.
Lastly, I would appreciate it if you guys could give your thoughts on this. Are you excited to see the new direction the Android team along with Matias, are going in? Do you feel that they are focusing on some rather important points in the software (usability, framework, aesthetics) or not? And of course please keep the flaming and crude/rude comments to yourselves. Thanks all for listening to my rant.

+1 internets I totally agree!
As nice as ICS's upgrade would be...it's not in Sammy's or AT&T interest
Sammy want's device sales and AT&T wants new/renewed contracts. By limiting ICS to 2012 devices, it provides incentive for 2010/2011 device owners to pony up for the new hotness with the new software.
Now before anyone wants to say, "WAIT WAIT, Apple..." save it. We're not talking about Apple here. Sammy is the OEM and they control what happens for the product line.
Sure you can wait for a dev to 'hopefully' get around to releasing an ICS port and yeah, it may be decent. That's your choice.
My upgrade plans begin in 2013 when ICS should have a few months in the wild and become more mature. By then all my smartphones will be eligible for upgrade discounts. I have no issue with AT&T's service as they allow me to keep my grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I'd rather have ICS when it's grown up and not so much a baby. Also, fully functional on my device too would be nice.

The main reason i want ics is so i can impress my friends lol. It also just has features that i just like better. Im not going to die without it, but it would be nice with it. Joshua Topolsky! My man! He was the senior editor at Engadget.com before leaving to start theverge.com. He actually left his Apple iPhone after the 3gs I think. He soon thereafter bought a Nexus One. Which I think he still uses to this day. And touts it every chance he gets. He does however praise apple for incitefull design and craftsmanship. I mean he is in a business (tech blogging) that is notorious for praising the behemoth company(not that this is a good thing) But trust you me when I say he isn't afraid to drop the hammer on Apple when he voices his gripes over their products. I would venture to say that most blogging sites require their employees to work on Macbooks now though. It seems to me that they would rather choose a totalitarian system like the Macs because they are less prone to buginess and viruses. And when your in an industry that thrives off of having secure data on close deadlines and less vulnerabilities, Macs (imo) just do it better. I dont use a mac, never have, I have had an Iphone 3g one time for a while. But will probably never go back. Unless I become rich or something. You do have to admire their design principles though both physically and software wise. When you compare Apple's aesthetics to Androids up till now, its just no-contest which is more cohesive and well thought out.

funny thing is I used to frequent a guitar forum and a well known member was a Samsung senior cdma systems engineer and his phone was an iPhone. that was before cdma iPhones existed so he was obviously on att which is big in texas. he didn't boast about apple too much nor Samsung, basically the only things I remember that stood out was he refuted the idea that the apple products have Good audio. said the newer apple products are not as good as the older ones and suffered from clipping (overdrive basically) and boasted the galaxy s in that area. but when it came down to it he was a fan of ios for the accessories and high quality audio software (garage band for the ipad) and got an ipad 2.
i always have an upgrade....(4 lines=leverage) .. but i will not purchase another phone until ICS is available, especially because of updates. i want the note..but if no ics pre-installed..i aint buying.. i almost went to verizon for the nexus but they dont have good coverage where i travel
ICS should be important to everyone. Even if only for the principle of it.

No because if any spying was done it would be done after the data left your phone and therefore undetectable.
The usa and uk do have an agreement whereby each can monitor the others private citizens (yes it is real and has been discussed in the uk houses of parliament. Its called echelon and is a matter of public record in uk) but its highly doubtful you would be spyed on for no reason and not really something you could know if it did happen so not worth worrying over.

I'm in japan and they take **** really serious here. Bittorrents and all that stuff.
You kids might laugh but this ****s serious.
Seems soon many times when I'm downloading the police park outside my building. Its not just this time.
For you that laughed I guess you never heard of "acta" or "sopa" these things are serious and not to be laughed at
But your ignorance is what makes you you I guess and makes them so so much money
The ones that they Sue for millions of $$$
I have my protection up
But these police keep parking out my building everytime I test the system.
I want to see what they see.

I laugh because the way you worded it made it sound like some action movie ****.
I don't live in a box, I know what SOPA and ACTA are. Well, ACTA now. But how about, if they take that **** so seriously, you stop doing what they don't want you to do if you're afraid of the consequences.
It's like you're afraid of jail but you still have no problem robbing a store.
So chill with the illegal stuff and you won't have to worry about the police outside.

Because the internet is free and should always be. Im just asking. Why do you have to be a web police??

I once found an app that detects all wifi enabled devices that are using wifi or Mobile data connections. It was gone so fast I couldn't get it.
It used a live map to detect the location
I feel I'm touching a subject that's too sensitive.
Hahaha lol...
You being serious or not.. Still funny

I'm not being the internet police. I'm stating the obvious. Don't do illegal **** and you won't have to be all paranoid.
The internet isn't really free. You pay your monthly bill for it or whatever, but the content within the internet is free unless, of course, you're downloading repackaged programs that actually retail for real money in which case you should buy the stupid program or music.
Not saying that I'm not guilty of pirating either, but don't complain about consequences for your actions when you knew them before you even did it.

Can I just marry you?

Verizon Wireless draws fire for monitoring customers' app usage, Web browsing..

I saw this this morning on Flipboard, any thoughts? I would guess even custom ROMS do no good when it comes to Verizon collecting our browsing/internet habits?

I don't like big brother monitoring.

I didn't read the full thing but google has been doing this forever and then some. they even increased how detailed/how much data they collect with the new TOS they put out recently. I'm betting the only reason Verizon is drawing more fire is because of the phone aspect of it.
Also, big brother can and does whatever they want. The government monitors all sorts of stuff that you would think would be illegal to do. Welcome to the new socialist regime under Obama..
I don't see an opt out, unless its not out yet.

I clicked it and it kept logging me out of my Verizon account and just showing the main splash page.

Just log in to myverizon and go to privacy settings. Should bring up a page with all your lines under each section and you can select the bubble to opt out.
Custom ROM tracking?
Does this still apply to users with a custom ROM?

Yeah, if you don't think that Bush handed him the keys right before firmly pointing the economy at the iceberg and tying steering wheel in place before doing so, than your mistaken.. And being prior military and working in intelligence, I can tell you that every electronic ANYTHING is being archived and saved and scanned for keywords since way before Obama. Eery single one of your emails and voice conversations and IM's and posts. Hmm and who put the Patriot Act in place.. hmm.. Have a Lovely day talking to big brother.. Oh by the way.. They prefer sexting.

Not that I want to get into a political conversation here, but I will, who made it a felony to protest, even peacefully, in front of the Secret Service? Who's had 4 years to fix said economy but has only steered it deeper into the hole. Obama has increased the national debt more in 4 years than Bush did in 8.
Now I'm not a Bush fan, I'm just saying Obama is bad news. Oh, as far as the Patriot Act, who renewed it once the majority of the terrorist alarm settled down years after 9/11??
I do agree the monitoring has been going on for a long time, but it has either taken steps that no one would before or at least taken steps publicly that every other regime did in secret. If it is just the same sh*t diff pile then doing it publicly is just a slap in the face to everyone. I'd rather they try to hide it then do it and blatantly step on our rights.
Oh, one more thing, who's given illegal immigrants more rights/help than the average American who is in need of help too?
I'm pretty sure most companies track your online habbits. They claim the use it for "market research". On my phone I'm not really that bothered by it, I don't do anything on it that I want to keep private, because I don't trust how private they are.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless you are embarassed you look at porn on your phone. Just keep things you would like to be personal and not tracked heavily on a properly secured connection at home, and possibly use TOR if you are that paranoid and want a little extra security.
Actually, I believe there is Tor available for android. It may help cut down on what they know your doing.
yawn, who cares???

Ya because Obama is a king and can just do whatever he wants with no one else in government having a say.

Yeah, let's not make this a presidential debate thread.
I've always liked Verizon, but lately I'm getting tired of them. I'm following the link to opt out.

Wasting your time. If someone says socialist regime and Obama together.. Let it go. And consider that statement with future debates with them.

Yes. That's exactly what I meant. When someone is referring to another comment they're automatically bunched in.

Democrat or Republican the only thing you can be sure of is they do NOT have your best interest in mind. They love that they factioned the people, makes it easier for them when we're fighting about who's the worst.

I don't mind some monitoring but when they collect everything!? That's a little overboard IMO. I want an option to op out. I don't care about their strategic advertisements for my use. I guess there's no way stop them until theyre a law suit against them.
