[SOLVED] [Xoom 2] Connect portable HD without external PW: will it ever be possible? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I´m very new to all this and I don´t really know whether or not this may be possible in the future.
I have the Xoom 2 10.1" Wifi, I´ve already rooted my device, installed "USB mass storage", and purchased this adapter:
amazon uk, "gp/product/B006R0XOLO/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details"
(Sorry, I cannot post links yet!)
It works fine with a USB pen, but as soon as I connect my portable HD it freezes immediately, as described here (around 9:30):
youtube, "watch?v=nWvaH-If83Q"
I´d like to be able to use my Xoom to download pictures and videos on the go, so the external powered USB mentioned in the previous video is not a valid solution for me.
I understand is a power issue, but I don´t really know if with the proper kernel (?), a different cable, or some other way I may ignore, this will be possible some day. I would really appreciate some input.
Thanks a lot.

I have found that the newest HDDs (a brand new USB3 Passport) works fine without external power while my smaller 1st generation Passport lights up but doesn't spin.

That´s great news for me, thanks a lot!
The portable HD I tried it´s at least a couple of years old, so that may be the issue. Could you please post a link or at least the exact model you purchased? (I wouldn´t like to purchase the wrong model...).
I just noticed, though, that your signature says "Motorola Xoom", not Xoom 2, I wonder if the all device may be possible to power it up while the new one may not??
I realize the Xoom 2 is not a very popular device, but I´m still quite worried about such a positive feature being consistently ignored, if someone did actually got it to work...

two possibilities:
a) buy a hdd that draws less power upon spinup
b) try to make your own "external" power source from maybe one or two 18650 Li-Ion batteries and a dc/dc-converter. Make that provide power to your hdd and only connect the data-leads to your xoom. Might work, but ask someone who really knows about this stuff before frying your hd/xoom/car/etc.

I´d love to! But I´d like to know beforehand if it works, before I spend my money. Do you happen to know which brands/models draw the least amount of power??

I have no idea how to do this, and I don´t know anyone who has done it. The possibility of "frying" my brand new device doesn´t sound too enticing, either. On top of that, the idea of lugging around even more cables/devices to power the Xoom up makes the whole idea of the tablet less than ideal, for my needs. I rather purchase that one "good" HD, if such a thing exists...

IT WORKED!
I´m going to be writing a new post about it, so people can find it more easily.
Stay tuned!

Upgrade to WM6 without USB?

Hey everyone, I'm new here , and I thought I'd start with a quick question.
My HTC Universal is a bit handicapped (bought it off a friend who said it was broken, apparently the USB plug terminals weren't fully soldered, but I couldn't connect all of them and it will only charge through USB and nothing else.)
If someone has an HTC schematic or a high-res image of the motherboard, I could possibly try to revive USB transfer capabilities (but that area is a bit damaged from not having a small enough soldering iron ), *OR*, if there is a way to reflash from within the OS using a SD card, that would be great.
Hope someone knows the answer to this, thanks!
Edit: And if it's of any possibility, how much would a replacement board be? Enough to satisfy a 100% working USB connection?
No ideas? If someone can at least give me a schematic or a high-res pictures of both sides of the board then I could possibly fix the USB to 100% functionality.
If you check the WIKI for the Universal you shoul be able to find a link for downloading the Service Manual. It shows the total un-assembly-re-assembly process step by step. You may also find instructions for SD flashing there as well. I have never flashed my Uni by SD, but I have don other phones like that. Most of the HTC's are capable. There is even info in the Service manual telling you what to have on the SD and wht to name the files from proper use. Give it a search.
Thanks! I have the manual already so I'll give it a look over. I wasn't entirely sure and I thought I wouldn't see anything but I'll look more in-depth .
Just a side note, does anyone know where I can get a replacement motherboard and how much it will be? Just curious, as that option might be available if it isn't too expensive.

USB-Host I miss it - you to???

Hi,
I miss the USB-Host on all of our slick new Devices!
Only the very BIG HTC has an USB-Host.
The only "small" WM5, GSM,GPS and USB-Host Device ever made was the FJS Loox T830.
I think this is not right! What's your opinion?
An Usb-Host gives you endless possiblities!
BR
Daniel
yeah..
but there's really no way to do it?
yes, definately would be great to have!!
Yes i am agree with you
What's the point? A WM device can't provide enough power down the USB port to power most devices, so you'll have to use a powered hub anyway. Unless you WANT to kill the battery in 10 minutes flat.
Need a keyboard? Get a BT one.
Need a mouse? Get a BT one, though why you need a mouse when you have a touchscreen device, I don't know...
Need a memory stick? Get one that takes mini-SD cards. I have one, they're very useful!
Need a printer? Why? You've got some printer drivers and a print option in your WM programs? Didn't think so...
Wifi dongle? Get a device with wifi built in...
Etc etc...
my mine use case is Various FTDI based Hardware to Control or Measure stuff.
e.g UniLog. one of the things we did:

What happens if the SD slot is behind the battery?
What happens if the memory stick isn't yours
I found it extremley usefull on my Toshiba G900. I would often have work colleages giving me memory sticks out "in the field" (actually a very big automation site in Langley - HWDC) and ask me if I could email/keep something for them during our integration testing. I also took photos of stuff and put it straight onto there memory sticks.
So you might not see any reason to have it but, some of us do.
edit: not to mention the really coool - when they said "oh yeah I have that on memory stick but my latops back in the office", you can imagine how I could act all geek then and say "you got it on you? is it in that Excel file? Let me have a look now mate"
doesn't tv-out is a usb host question??
if it is so i like it .
i would really like to have tv-out on my htc wizard

First, this is untrue. And if you think using your wifi or BT connection in a "constant" way doesn't blow through your battery, you've never done it
Second, I want to plug in an ultrasound probe:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MNQmD_Jtco
Can't do that with BT (too slow) or WiFi (too power hungry and I cannot tolerate unknown latency or dropped frames in by wireless medical device connection).
USB Host is terribly useful and not only for the "obvious" things listed. Let the users/developers find interesting uses. They are out there!

Full Root for HP Zeen (C510 printer tablet) update 9/8/12

As of this time, we do not have a way to restore to stock rom. We are waiting for the rom to be reuploaded somewhere. If you have it, please get with me.
Click here and download the three files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27647443&postcount=441
Unzip and place those three files on your sd card that goes in your zeen.
Power off the zeen.
Insert the sd card.
Hold the two volume buttons, then press and hold the power button and wait for the flash to complete.
It will say to remove sd card and press any key. Do so.
Once powered up, your should have a semi aosp build of....I think it's 2.2, correct me if wrong.
just ordered one from hp using purchaseedge points. free tablet=good. should be here this week. cant wait to start playing around with it. i cant imagine hp spent a ton trying to secure the hardware from hackers, since it is only a $400 device. hopefully this will gain more interest now that the samsung tab isnt living to the hype

I don't really think this things is gonna get much further. I wish it would, but of all the people on here only like 6 have it.
i just bought one yesterday ($299 @ bb w/ staples pricematch). haven't had a chance to do much with it yet, but i'll play with it this weekend. btw, i'm in KC too.
i have one also one issue though i dont have the printer for the setup is there a workaround for this? >_<
Don't need printer to setup
you shouldn't need a printer to set up just ZEEN. I know it forces you to dock ZEEN to printer, in that case, pull the menu down from the top, manually go into settings. Let me see if I can come up with documentation. I just did it and its working fine.
jlechner,
do you remember which version of Z4root u used?
Come on people... Lets root this thing...

I have had my Zeen for two weeks now. One thing that has been very helpful is taking all the apk. files I like on EVO and putting them on the Zeen sd card. Most are working great!
I would like to know Z4 root that was used also.

No, but after you asked that I remember when I used the latest one, it kinda messes up. It puts it in some kind of test mode, and upon almost any reboot wipes everything.
z4root v1.3.0 gives me temporary "partial" root. Superuser works for some root apps like Root Explorer and AutoStart, but Titanium Backup and AutoStart do not see root.
Still unable to use RomManager because the device is still NAND locked.

Has this gone anywhere? I just picked up a printer and got the pretty nifty tablet with it... or is that I picked up an HP Zeen tablet and got a pretty functional printer with it... Either way NIFTY COMBO!!
I have a rooted Nexus One and Motorola Backflip as well as a jailbroken iPhone 4, 3GS, and 3G.
This thing has to have a loophole somewhere. If we could get it running Android 2.2 and drop that horrific Yahoo interface we might be getting somewhere.
HP Zeen
I am having the same issues with the Z4root. Some things work and some thing don't recognize the root.
The one thing I love about the tablet is the battery life. I installed everything that was on my IPOD, and plug it into any amp--hours of music, and it is great for watching movies.
It is like getting free tablet with a great printer. No monthly payment!!!
Holding both volume buttons at boot will ask to erase the user data. But that's all I've found so far.
Has anyone been able to use Dolphin HD browser on this? Amazon has the Printer for $296 with free shipping. Now the price point is where it should be. Could someone list the known working apps for this tablet? Thanks.
Edit: I found it for $259.99 from Adorama with free shipping.
td1320, i have been using Dolphin Browser HD on the Zeen for about a month and a half now, it works great.
Zeen root
Which rooted apps have you been able to put in??
Do you guys recommend this printer? I have seen some bad reviews.

The printer is pretty good to me. It's fast and responsive. On another note, I tried installing the marketplace on this tablet and it keeps coming back it couldn't be installed. I wonder why... Astro File Manager works!

Hi, I got one of these at a junksale today minus the printer or anything to charge it.
I have made up a charger with correct voltage & amps and fitted a suitable plug. It charges.
I am still to get past the setup screen much help would be appreciated in knowing how you do this - if at all possible.
One thing I have been able to do is when battery warning comes on access the dashboard and connect it to my wireless network. I am looking though the settings now to see if this setup process can be overridden in there by perhaps deleting something or killing a service.
I have an IP address of it sat on my network, could you SSH into it I wonder?
Ideally I could do with taking it into a store and just plugging it into one on the shelf on display. But that would be a bit cheeky.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Andrew

I picked my Zeen up from a local classified site for $50 because the kid couldnt get it past the printer setup. I'm assuming it was probably stolen the more I think of it, since if it was purchased with the printer it would be setup already... but I bought it from someone who claimed to be the original owner so i cant do much more about it.
On The Way home I had a brilliant idea.
I stopped at staples, took my zeen in and docked it on their printer for 30 seconds and it finished the setup... Pretty easy...
However, I have since reset the device and foun an easier way.
YOU MUST HAVE A POWER/DATA Mini-USB CABLE FOR THIS!
it can not be just a power cable, it has to have DATA capabilities.
(I Used A MacBook For This But It Should Work For A PC)
-Plug in your USB cable to the computer
-Plug In your Zeen AC Adapter (YOU MUST HAVE AN AC ADAPTER AND MINI USB)
-then boot your zeen to the setup menu
-plug in the mini usb to your zeen and hopefully it gives you the option to continue setup. (If it doesnt give it about 60 seconds)
-If it doesnt work unplug the mini-usb and plug it back in
I have reset twice now and this has worked for me.
-If it doesn't show up unplug the mini-usb and then plug it back in.
I have reset twice now, the first time i had to unplug it a few times but the 2nd reset it took it the first time.

USB host connection works once

I have the official Samsung USB Connection kit. Both connectors work fine immedeately after boot, but once the device has 'slept' they do not work anymore. I get a notification that the USB Connector is connected, but whatever I insert nothing happens. LEDs (on USB sticks, mice, ...) do not light up which seems to indicate that no power is applied to the port.
I'm running stock Android, rooted. Booting into safe mode makes no difference.
Any ideas what's going on?
You're not the only one, except that in my case USB sticks do light up. IMHO Samsung seriously botched up the automounter in their last update. I wonder how long it's going to take them this time to get their act together and produce a bugfix.
I have exactly the same problem, wich really annoying as I bought this tablet in order to work on it (with a keyboard). I'll try Samsungs suport...

Good luck with that. I contacted Samsung support Benelux and was told it was because Amazon Germany had installed "German software" on my tablet.
Trust me, that is NOT the case...

You might be right, I haven't tried one of those yet. Of course, that would mean Samsung botched up the entire USB subsystem of our Note, which is kinda even worse.
Seriously, is anything done about this usb c**kup, or what? I bought my Note, expecting it to replace my venerable Archos 101 which, incidentally, had excellent usb connectivity three blooming years ago and on Android 2.1, only to find out that not only did I have to buy motherloving adapters for the Note, but on top of that that they don't even work properly.
I also came from Archos 10.1 IT so I know your pain...
My only hope is that we will soon get the 4.2 update, and that it will fix this problem.
If not, I'll probably going to flash CM on it to see if this works better.
Unfortunately, I've seen no CM reports that USB host works flawlessly.

Quick question, has anyone has the adapter problems while on Android 4.1.1? I tried my adapters on a shop showroom model of the Note 10.1 and they worked perfectly, but only afterwards I noticed that Note was running 4.1.1, while mine is up to date with 4.1.2.
I'm just trying to avoid having to send back a piece of equipment that, despite everything, I can barely miss.
One of the USB OTG tools (forgot which one) had a table of functioning USB host versus Android releases and last time I looked the number of 4.1.2 devices that hat USB problems was significantly higher than the 4.1.1 devices. So I have all reason to believe it is a software problem, introduced in 4.1.2.
EDIT: The tool is USB Host Diagnostics from ChainFire.
So, is there an easy way to go back to 4.1.1 on the BigNote? Mine came with 4.1.2 installed anyway and something tells me that, if I ask Amazon to downgrade for me, I'll be answered with a deafening silence, probably with a "Duh?" In there somewhere.
On second thought, scratch the easy part; is there any way to downgrade a BigNote without losing any of Samsung's added value (yes, I happen to consider most os what they added actually valuable).

MHL HDMI Adapter working on one Note 4, but not the 2nd Note 4

I have 2 Galaxy Note 4 phones. Love em. They are both running the same configuration, Android 6.0.1. I have an MHL adapter that I have used on may devices for quite a while and it works great. However, it only works on one of my Note 4 phones. I am totally baffled. I spent a couple hours reviewing the settings on both phones to see if something was different. I even upgraded it to 6.0.1/Marshmellow and when that didn't work I did a factory reset. I have read every troubleshooting guide and nothing seems to work. I guess what I am looking for is someone who understand what I should be looking for....
Clearly its not the adapter since it does work on the one Note 4.
It seems to me this is likely a hardware problem because of the fact that I did a factory reset, but honestly I can't really say. I don't think the lcd digitizer would affect it, but just in case I pulled it and installed the one from the working phone. No joy.
Anyone know if there are hardware differences between Note 4s made at different times? I don't know what else to try but if anyone has an ideas please offer it as this has me stumped.
Thank you
May be a silly question but I ask it because I see you made no mention of it but have you checked and compared the charging ports between the two and is there any missing pieces or bent port pins, debris, pocket lint or anything else that would affect the connection to the phone?

I don't think it is a silly question at all. For me, usually the problems I have the toughest time solving are often when I am looking for the complicated solution and forget the simple one starting at me. I just assumed the USB was ok because I can charge the phone and browse files. But obviously it has to be that. Really there is not much else it could be when I break it down. Now that I test it more closely the file transfer is not the best on this phone.
I guess I needed to hear that. Yeah so it seems quite obvious now. I just replaced the lcd digitizer so I may as well go ahead and replace the charging port while I have the phone apart since I can buy one for +/- $10.
Thank you for the input. This was an easy one after all. Well...let's hope. I will post again once I receive and install the part.
