My charge is running stock Froyo with the latest version of Netflix and the rotation patch applied.
In my office here, I get LTE, so I enabled it, fire up Netflix, and connect with my USB cable (The cable is Samsung, leftover from my Epic) to my computer to keep it charged.
The battery still drains, and eventually it even overheated (said charging was paused because of battery temperature).
Anyone else experience anything similar? Any suggestions on how to fix?

First off, the Charge has a specific cable with a special connector pin that helps with flashing(among other things) and that might be your problem. Second, USB charging is much slower then direct wall socket charging, and third Netflix is a battery devouring MONSTER. I think one episode of Prison Break(42mins) drained about 10-20% battery. You can't out-charge Netflix with a USB charge, as for the overheating there's nothing you can do on stock, if you flash the PBJ OTB kernel you can underclock/volt to keep your battery cool, it still got slightly warm during netflix but everything else felt air conditioned. Sorry if I sound like an asshole, just read my post and I sounded like I was trying to prove a point lol. Just trying to help.

It's cool. I figured the Epic USB cable would work since it's an SGS phone, and I've used it to flash ROMs to that phone - and I definitely don't feel like shelling out to samsung for more special magical heavy duty usb cables. Maybe a powered USB hub would help. It seems it's heating up quite a bit just using Pandora, too. I'm wondering if it's a combination of volts/amps/whatever that it's trying to suck from the USB port, and maybe also my otterbox not allowing the heat to dissipate off of the back.

The otterbox will definitely hold in some heat. As for the powered usb hub, that won't do anything unfortunately. The max amount of power coming from a usb port is 500 mA and a wall charger (at least the one specified for the charge) shells out 1000 mA.
I did find a 12 adapter that puts out 1A. Not that has to do with anything on this topic.
OK, I am going back to work.

As far as I know, and have read ... The original Motorola Xoom does not and will not charge via usb because of the voltage needed. The Xoom2 or the Xoom FE both of which charge via usb.
That's disapointing ...
USB charging can be modified on phones via kernel settings, if the kernel supports it.
I'm sure this feature would exist by now if it could be done. I too am sad.
Eh, it may suck that we have to use a proprietary cable...but damn does it charge fast.

For Xoom?
Siyah kernel for Galaxy S2 (this is what I used) with ExTweaks app lets you change the input voltages from USB/AC charger.
AFAIK the Xoom doesn't have any electrical paths for USB voltage to the battery for charging. Would need to do some serious dirty work to get it working.
Simply: not worth it.

no chance to charge via usb.
the separate charging port is nice, the xoom charges fully in about 2 hours from <10%.

Exactly. I think i saw a tutorial for doing this on YT, but it looked kinda scary for someone who isn't used to it. So really not worth it.

Lol you're pretty much on the money, the XOOM USB does not connect straight to the battery, hence the reason why you cannot charge it.
One reason why this is not possible is because the Xoom uses a much higher voltage battery (7.4V afaik) and so converting the 5V USB voltage to the >8V needed in order to even think about charging the battery would make the charging slow, inefficient and costly to implement.
I don't know why Moto chose to use a higher voltage battery with the problems it creates, but one thing it does mean is that it can only be charged using the charger that Moto supplied.
Yeah. That charger.... mine died and I had to buy a replacement. Walmart was the only place I could get one, and cost me nearly 40 bucks.... not happy.
I'm thinking of returning it and trying an HD dock.

Hi, i know this subject is already exists in here, but it still have no answer. My sensation need 6 - 8 hours to fully charge from 10% to 100%, is there someone can help me to solved my problem?
This happen everyday, so don't ask me to remove the battery and try again because i've tried it.
Are you charging your mobile via a charger connected to a power outlet or are you charging via usb connected to a pc? How old is your battery?
it is a common HTC's issue after rooting the device
everyone has percentage mireadings while charging the device

Has it always been like that or started happening? When mine started doing that I replaced my battery, charging times went back to normal and battery life was a lot better also.
It happens to me with my original battery which I think is dead because it lasts not much time. Buy on my anker battery it charges really fast, with the same charger. So the problem is your battery I think, as on mine

What rom are you using. Sometimes my sense 5 rom misreads ac for usb and charges damn slowly.
Happy to help.
If your charging via usb connected to pc then charging will be half day, its because usb port is for data sending and not charging, so USB outputs very low volt charge and so device like phone charges so slow
If your charging with adapter into AC outlet, you could check if your using right cable(there are data cables where there are little wires inside so again it cannot output that power to the device and there is cables for data+charge with bigger cables inside)
P.S. Stock HTC cable provided is not the best wire....
Mine sensation is charging about 2h40min from discharge(10% - 6%) to full charge(100%)

I recently got a Nexus 5 to replace my old Nexus S and really like it. I am having one challenge that I was hoping for help on:
I have got OTG working with stickmount fine, but I am trying to use this Y-cable to charge while using it and I can't get the phone to charge from the cable at all (with or without a USB drive connected). I have been able to get other, non-Nexus's to charge from the cable so it isn't the cable that is the problem.
I am rooted but running a stock kernel and rom - any ideas why it might not be working or if there is a custom kernel that has enabled the capability otherwise disabled in the phone?
Probably you need a modified Kernel like Nexus 7

I had OTG charging on my Galaxy Nexus as well as the N7. I just tried it too on my N5 with Elemental X kernel, no go. That's odd no one has come out with this feature yet if that's the case as I'm sure it's very sought after especially with people who have the 16gb model like myself that hook up to external hard drives to save space on the phone but they need external power.
Otg + Charging is also very useful when you are playing games using GamePad

If you are using a USB Connection Game Pad via OTG, graphics heavy games use too much battery and usually you can not play for long. This also increases the importance of such kernel for Nexus 5 as well. Nexus 5 have smaller battery but it can play decent Graphics.
I do not like Game Pads with Bluetooth connectivity as they have control latency or lag and your moves are not as quick as even the touch screen, where as you use Game Pads to improve your control moves and probably make them better than touch screen.

I think that Nexus 5 USB Port is 5 Pin and not 11 pin like Galaxy S4 or Galaxy S3. Can someone please confirm this?
If this is the case will be still be able to Charger Phone and do OTG concurrently or simultaneously ?
Yes but I believe it's something that has to be addressed at the kernel level.
I use a powered USB hub and even though the phone doesn't show any charging animations, going into the battery info screen shows it is charging (though it doesn't say usb or ac, just charging)
from what I have seen it's even less than trickle charge.
USB flash drive mounted.
Screen off
Battery goes up about 1% every 10-15 minutes.
So clearly current is being passed from the hub to the phone. Just not a lot

I am not sure but can we use QI Wireless charging along OTG. I have read somewhere that it charges but there is a bug in Kernel due to which it does not know that battery is being charged there is no animation or text to show that battery is being charged. Another concern is that if OS does not know about charging and battery is being charged is it not dangerous can it not overcharge and below the battery etc.?

I use exactly the same Y-cable from amazon as avalpert. I connect my USB 2.5" harddisk first at the Nexus charger and let it spin up. Then i connect the OTG cable to my Nexus 5 (rooted stock ROM & stock kernel). The battery icon in the status bar has no charging animation but in settings it says its charging. Around 1% in 5-10min. Even if the screen is on.
@ avalpert: U could check the current of your usb drive in the manufacturer's datasheet and subtract this from the current, your charger is able to provide. My Nexus 5 charger can output max. 1.2A at 5V. Maybe you're using another model and there is just little current left to charge as Alex remarked.
But the difference is I was only powering a flash drive which uses next to no power. And still only 1% every 10-15 minutes.
My best guess is that because otg is enabled. The kernel is not able to tell what type of charging type (ac or USB) is connected so it just enables trickle charge as not to cause any problems

I can confirm this, I use a powered 7 port USB 2.0 hub, and with the original PS: no charging.
Now I took another PS that puts out 2.14-1.7A @ 6-7.5 VDC, and hey presto, charging the phone!
No indicator in the status bar (top screen), but when checking the battery status it clearly states "CHARGING" (see picture OPLADEN 95%)!!
And it charges pretty fast too.....
The mouse is working, as wel as the USB stick is recognized and working!!
The ONLY worry is about the charge....... is 6-7.5 V a battery killer? :fingers-crossed:
Anyone?
Used Voltage and Current Rating details of Power Supply?

May be we can use fixed output voltage and amp adapter just like the following
http://www.amazon.co.uk/2000mah-Ada...ds=5V+2A+2000ma+AC+Power+Adapter+Wall+Charger
I know it is up to the device (Nexus 5) that how much load it will put on the adapter to consumer out of 2000ma or 2A. On the other hand I have read somewhere that even most 2000mA USB Chargers just give 500mA in the beginning and due to some data pins activity they start generating 2000mA. If this is the case then Nexus 5 will force only 500mA or so from the charger that it is not compatible with. If we use some adapter that generates constant 5V 2000mA irrelevant of communication on data pins like the ones with 3.5mm pin which does not have any data pins, at least we are guaranteed that, at least full power is coming out of the adapter at all times.

I am given to understand that it has nothing to do with the "intelligence" of the charger, but with basic electrical principles.
That would imlpicate that if a device requires 500 mA, the charger will supply 500 mA, if the device would require 3000mA, then it would supply 2000 mA, being it's maximum current (flow).
As far as I know, a powersource ONLY generates a flow (Amps) up to it's maximum limit, if it is connected to a consumer (device). No connected device / consumer leaves no flow to be generated.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Added to my little test earlier today: The phone didn't get hot, at most it would be slightly less cool..... for the PS the same.
Hello!
Recently, my phone has been charging very slowly. When I first got my phone, it went from zero to 100% in ~2.5 hours, but now it takes about 5 hours to fully charge. I am currently using the stock charger and USB cable that came with the phone, and I have tried other cables and chargers to ensure that it wasn't my charger's fault (or my USB cable). I also tried flashing the stock rom and kernel, but the problem was persistent. Could it be a defective battery that is causing this problem?
My current settings:
Mahdi Rom 4.4.3 6/12
Stock kernel settings (no UV, OC)
No partial wakelock problem
Thanks!

Take a look at the charging levels.. While charging via a wall charger it should be between 800-1050 mA.. If it's below that, it's most probably a low standard usb cable or a charger.. Try changing the cable first and check the current.
I'm getting around 600mA so that's not good.. I'll try another charger and see what goes. Thanks!

i charge slow on the stock charger/cable as well. i ended up buying a 5amp charger with two usb holes and a better usb cable, now i charge from 0 to 100 in about an hour and a half.
Thanks for your help, guys! Turns out most of the cables I own are faulty/below standard. I found a cable later that charged my phone at around 800mA. I guess I'll do some cable shopping later

Could it be something to do with custom ROM settings? Stock charger and cable should be able to pull 800-1000mA from a power outlet, I can't understand why some devices wouldn't be able to do so.

No. The only thing that would influence charge speeds is USB fast charge (charges faster on USB, AC still the same) and that's a kernel level feature.

Something that was overlooked was temperature. IIRC at higher temperatures the phone either stops charging or slows down charging in order to keep the heat down. This was done to preserve the life of the battery as charging batteries while they're hot could degrade the battery.
