My charge is running stock Froyo with the latest version of Netflix and the rotation patch applied.
In my office here, I get LTE, so I enabled it, fire up Netflix, and connect with my USB cable (The cable is Samsung, leftover from my Epic) to my computer to keep it charged.
The battery still drains, and eventually it even overheated (said charging was paused because of battery temperature).
Anyone else experience anything similar? Any suggestions on how to fix?

First off, the Charge has a specific cable with a special connector pin that helps with flashing(among other things) and that might be your problem. Second, USB charging is much slower then direct wall socket charging, and third Netflix is a battery devouring MONSTER. I think one episode of Prison Break(42mins) drained about 10-20% battery. You can't out-charge Netflix with a USB charge, as for the overheating there's nothing you can do on stock, if you flash the PBJ OTB kernel you can underclock/volt to keep your battery cool, it still got slightly warm during netflix but everything else felt air conditioned. Sorry if I sound like an asshole, just read my post and I sounded like I was trying to prove a point lol. Just trying to help.

It's cool. I figured the Epic USB cable would work since it's an SGS phone, and I've used it to flash ROMs to that phone - and I definitely don't feel like shelling out to samsung for more special magical heavy duty usb cables. Maybe a powered USB hub would help. It seems it's heating up quite a bit just using Pandora, too. I'm wondering if it's a combination of volts/amps/whatever that it's trying to suck from the USB port, and maybe also my otterbox not allowing the heat to dissipate off of the back.

The otterbox will definitely hold in some heat. As for the powered usb hub, that won't do anything unfortunately. The max amount of power coming from a usb port is 500 mA and a wall charger (at least the one specified for the charge) shells out 1000 mA.
I did find a 12 adapter that puts out 1A. Not that has to do with anything on this topic.
OK, I am going back to work.

Hi guys, I got 2 subject so I thought I'll just make one thread for this.
I'm from EU so I used my US charger with an other plug. Seemed to
work great, doesn't complain like it does with my HTC phone charger.
But now the charger gets pretty hot, along with the USBplug that is in the charger. Should I be worried? I would say its about 50-70celsius.

So I got Quake from preware, but it doesn't work with touch only (even tho there r touch controls?) so Im wondering if its possible to get it working with this:
http://icontrolpad.com/
That would be nice with the snes emulator also so I might buy it, its very expensive tho but I like the oldschool'ness of it.
You're likely to burn it out if you keep using it, don't leave it on unattended.

Sure? Does your get hot?
The charger should handle ~220v as we got here. So I don't get why this shouldn't work.
Isnt there a way to find a compatible European charger without paying 30$ for the travel pack?
Pretty much any micro-USB charge will charge the Touchpad, it is just some will be quicker than others. I am charging from the USB port on my laptop at the moment and it has upped the charge by 8% in the last hour or so with the screen off.

Yeah but the normal one gives about 30% on that time. But as I said, it should work, no problem. I don't think its uncommon for it to get hot but I'm not sure tho
My official charger gets quite warm, together with the USB plug. Clearly that is the only device that will charge at full speed and without a warning on the screen. However, as I was trying to point out, you don't have to go down the official charger route if you are prepared to either accept the on-screen warning or a slower charge rate. The Blackberry Playbook charger gives 5V 2A and although it comes up with the on-screen warning charges almost as quickly as the official unit.
I bought one of these http://www.mymemory.co.uk/iPod---iP...s-USB-Charger-and-Socket-for-iPod_iPhone_iPad the other day, rated at 2.1 amps (though the unit shows 3 amps). I get the dire message about not enough voltage or current but it works fine and quickly. Obviously I don't use the supplied Apple cable...
Ok, first a little background on this issue...
After having my S3 for about 13-14 months I started having charging issues. The charging port was very "loose" and I had to make sure my charger cable was in just right to get my phone to charge. This was annoying, however was out of warranty and didn't want to pay vzw for an insurance claim. This got worse, and eventually I noticed my phone would only charge with 1 specific usb cable, 1 specific wall charger, and 1 specific car charger.
Well, I finally called Samsung and explained the situation to them and they had me chip my phone to them and they would repair it, free of charge. When they had it, they replaced the charging port, the headphone jack, and the screen. I received the phone back after couple weeks, super excited, and immediately charged it up with the cable I had next to my bed. New charging port felt perfect, nice snug fit, etc... Well, after a few days i hooked it up with the original usb cable that came with the phone, nothing happened. So i started messing around and realized that the only usb cables that will charge my phone are Motorola brand cables! At least the 2 cables I have work, and not a single other cable I've tried works! This includes stock Samsung cable, many cheap 3rd party cables, other friend's S3 cables, none work. Also, I have this cheap car charger that is the type you plug a USB cable into that works, however any other car charger I've tried does not work either.
Also, when i say the cables won't charge my phone, it also won't connect the phone to a PC. They do absolutely nothing.
Does anyone have ANY idea why this is happening?!?! It was an issue before Samsung repaired my phone, they replaced the charging port, but I still have this issue!! I can send it back to Samsung for them to look at it again, however my backup phone, a Razr Maxx, just died also. Seems like the battery went dead and now I can't get it to charge, but that's another issue.
So, any ideas?!

What rom/kernal
It doesn't matter. It does this when it is totally stock and rooted. Right now I'm not rooted or anything because it looks like it may be going back to Samsung again.

I think the smart charging circuit may be messed up
Really? How would that cause the phone to not work with any cable except a certain brand?? I'm just really curious and this is driving me insane!!

I would say you are putting mechanical stress on the charging port. This could be from some misaligned or mis-made cable or somehow pressing or pulling the charge cable when its connected. I've never seen this reported by anyone else, but the mechanical connections are not indestructible. If it were a common symptom with 100 million S3s having been sold, there would be a firestorm of complaints.
I have a similar issue. I'm not sure if it's the device or the ROM (CM nightlies).
Certain cables force the screen to turn back on, which means I get negative charge because the screen burns more than the charger is capable of supplying. Other cables are fine. I'm still looking for the pattern, it's super annoying and causes me to have to turn my phone off completely at times so as not to lose my battery altogether. I'm still trying to solve this, any help would be appreciated.

Further info- it's not the cable, it's the converter at the end. I think it has to do with amperage of the charger- if I use the stock samsung one I'm good, it's putting out 1.0A. If I use others that are fewer amps (like 700 mA) it's unpredictable. I suspect a kernel thing, I might download different kernels to play with it.

Always use chargers that is 1 A - 2A the circuit controls most of the charging regulating amps and voltage
Yes, I agree about using good chargers, but my phone wasn't always this way. It used to charge with anything, but no longer.
I enabled fast charge on Imosyen's lean kernel. That might have made a difference, but I'm not positive yet.
RESOLVED (Kinda)
Hello!
My VZW i535 just started giving me issues. I should preface this by saying that it is rooted and I do have a CM11 nightly flashed (will try to get specific version when I can, which may be awhile). I've had this installed for probably over a month now without problems. I also understand that charging issues are very common but nothing I could find is the same as my issue.
I noticed my phone was overheating (as it has frequently since purchased) with about 30% battery today, so I plugged it in after doing a reboot and all seemed well. About 15 minutes later I hear it beeping, giving the signal the battery is below 15%. It was actually at 5%, and the bottom of the device was extremely hot, as well as the end of the Samsung cable included with it, so I unplugged it and found that the metal part of the cable was mostly black and there was a strong electrical burning smell.
I tried two other USB cables, both in the Samsung AC adapter, and in the USB ports of several devices. With any cable in the adapter, it would say "charging" but would not actually charge, but with the computer USB ports it wouldn't say or do anything at all.
The battery is at 2% now and the device is powered off so that I can quickly do something if need be, but I can't do much. I ordered some replacement batteries with a charger, due for arrival by Friday 1/3, since I assume that the damage to the USB interface is permanent.
Is it likely that this was caused by the software? Or is the charger faulty? Any advice, in general? The warranty has expired, but I do have insurance on it if for some reason it would be better to just get a new device. I can't restore it to stock until I get replacement batteries; is that what you recommend?
Thanks so much!
Sounds like a hardware i ssue. Look inside ur usb port on the device to make sure it did not get burn. Wen ur battery comes in put it on and try to charge it with new cable. If it doesn't charge then it will ur USB port. I know some 4.4 roms give wonky bat stats but it shouldn't burn out ur cable or usb port at least i think it shouldn't. If u believe is a software issues flash a different version of the rom a previous build or a whole different rom. But with 2% battery i don't think u would be able to. Good luck
After playing around with it a bit, the USB interface on my phone definitely appears to have taken damage from the heat. It only charges when powered off, must be completely still, and charges relatively slowly.
What I would recommend for people with a similar problem is to do as I have done and purchase extra batteries with an external battery charger like the set I got for around $17 on Amazon.
My only guess for what caused this is that something faulted in the cable or AC adapter and caused a severe overheat issue. If anyone has anything else to say about that, please let me know so I have a better idea of what happened. I will mark as resolved soon.
Has anyone noticed that the tablet will drain the battery under use even on the charger?
I was quite surprised by this. Light use yields a charge but native gaming (not streaming) produces a power deficit. Something such as the Face demo will drain the battery in under a hour even on charge. Games such as Half Life 2 I have noticed will yield 5-6 hours of use from 100% to dead.
I have ordered a good 18 awg charge cable and solid 4.8 amp plug I am going to test with it. I have a usb voltage/amp meter coming as well to see what it is pulling during charge and use.
To this extent, I wish they had included an actual charge port to negate the over draw.
This happens to me but only if I'm plugged in via PC usb slot, wall charger is the only thing that seems to not drain battery while plugged in for me.

So far the answer to any heavy app use is No, based on Geforce forum feedback. Not even the wall charger. Some even reporting net negative charges with less demanding tasks.
I notice the same thing also when I'm playing DDE. .being plugged in while playing and losing charge
Noticed this already myself. It's kind of depressing how slowly this thing charges and it's REALLY bad if you can't even positively charge while gaming!

I'm in no way calling you a liar, but you seem to be the only one who can gain a charge. Any chance you can play portal plugged in and capture it with Shadowplay showing the positive charge?
That way those of us affected can get our chargers rma'd.
I bought a HDMI cord yesterday to hook up to my tv. Tablet cant hold the charge while being casted onto my T.V. siiiiiigggh. I wasnt even playing Portal either I was just playing Trine this morning.

BTW, Trine is a GPU hog, so also a heavy app.

No. I'm an idiot anyway. Playing a game with shadowplay is going to draw more battery, der!
Not happy to know this tablet will be useless after the battery reaches a certain cycle count. I won't even be able to use it as a wall tethered device via the charger. With it depleting the battery constantly, the charge cycles are going to add up quick.
Im on v1.1 and for me just streaming netflix in console mode hooked up to my tv using the included charger and cable and starting from a full charge will cause significant battery drain. I almost made it through streaming season 1 of SOA and it died in the middle of the last episode. And it doesnt seem to charge in console mode even when its just idleing. I have to pull the HDMI cable to get it to charge back up. The stock charger is putting out 5.2 volts and 2.1 amps I wonder how much power you could push through the micro USB port before it fries something. Im going to try ordering a 3 amp charger off amazon and see if it still does that. I found a 5 amp one but I dont want to mess anything up. I couldn't see gaming on this thing for very long like this witch is pretty disappointing. If I try to play trine in console mode it kills the battery much quicker and it gets pretty warm. I was hoping to use this thing more like a android TV device than a tablet and just leave it hooked up to my TV streaming video most of the time. I bought the shield controller and a Bluetooth keyboard for it and it works out really well except for the battery drain. Hopefully the new charger will solve this.
Edit:
After doing a bit of research into the "usb fast chargers" it turns out they are all fakes. Some ads are just a little confusing because they do put out more power but its just spread across multiple ports while others just tell you lies to get you to buy their product. Truth is they all charge at either 1 or 2.1 amps per usb port max. The only real fast charger is for the oppo find 7a witch has 7 pins in its usb port. So this might be kinda hopeless.
Did not realise that the back plate of this tablet is magnetic?

This is old news. If the current would be higher, the plug wouldn't be safe. I don't understand how Nvidia could be so "foolish" and forget a seperate charging solution, especially considering their computer GPUs can take up to 2x8 Pin 12V.
Just another reason why I will wait until there are more news about the second batch and the next Nexus.

It's not all that bad I'm still really satisfied ..After about an hour and a half of playing it only drops from 100% to 94 percent while connected to charger...and that's only on a heavy game like DDE..it does look great!
Posted this over on the timurs kernel Reddit but he wanted to get all defensive about it and deleted it cause his kernel is perfection in his own opinion. So I'm copying it and pasting it here. Just want any info on it I can get.
When I first setup my nexus I originally used my cigarette lighter worked fine then I converted to a dcdc converter and set it up for 5v when I hooked the nexus up there was a pop and a burning smell but every thing worked fine. Other than I noticed a horrible battery drain issue. After a few months I discovered anything I plugged in was draining the battery even if the tablet was off. The led on the phone charger would even light up even if it wasn't plugged into the wall. Got another nexus and everything worked flawless for months with the same DCDC and timurs kernel. Plugged it in took it out multiple times with no problem. Yesterday I decided I wanted to give marshmallow a test. It worked fine to other than it wouldn't charge due to the OTG cable and the way the stock kernel works so i flashed Element Kernel and enabled OTG charging and fast charge. It came on it charged and everything except music was playing through the tablet and not the DAC so I unplugged it and plugged it back in. It wouldn't charge..... Then I realized the charger had welded itself into the port and wouldn't come out. Finally got it out and tried it again. This time the tablet went black and won't do anything the port is melted on the tablet and the cord has melted plastic in the end. Is it a DCDC converter issue? Or a kernel issue? Maybe fast charge related? Just asking cause of the problem I had at the very beginning. Do you think the LCD might have survived? If so I was going to buy another nexus with a bad screen for like $25. Any input would be greatly appreciated just too keep it from happening again. Thanks in advance.
Fast charging burned cable? Ampere value?
You should put 'fast charging' in the title.
I used Timurs kernel on a 2012 Nexus 7 and the batterie was getting so hot, I had to disable fast charging. Since I used a Y usb cable to charge the tablet and only one usb device (usb ethernet adapter) there was no problem.
Maybe you should use an dc adapter with less Ampere output? Normal Charging is 0.5 Ampere but fast charging was up to 1.5 Ampere for me (checked with one of the cheap 'USB Charger Doctor Voltage Current Meter Mobile Battery Tester'). Maybe 1.0 Ampere is enough? Or use a thicker usb cable?
I think the LCD is fine because the overpower destroyed the mainboard only. But look inside the Nexus and see yourself!
