Charging Problems - G Tablet General

After not using my tablet for about a week, I plug my tablet back in to charge, and when i check on it, the tablet, freaks out. It shuts itself off completely, and I felt that the area on the tablet where the ac adapter plugs in was really hot and the plug that went into the tablet actually burnt my finger it was so hot! And it smelled like something was burning...
Now the tablet will not boot past the Bird screen and it does not show any messages telling me what is wrong with the tablet. I can't boot into CMW, I can boot to APX mode but it doesn't connect to my computer.
I have no idea what to do if anyone has any ideas, shoot...

The obvious thing would be to open the tablet up and look inside. If components are burnt, then send the tablet back to VS for replacement. If you can't see anything obviously wrong, then look through this thread. It has a kernel (1.1 bootloader only) which prints boot-up messages and going through them might tell us what's wrong.

Thanks for the reply!
Problem is that I'm on BL 1.2... And I can try a few things, but I figure without recovery mode or APX Mode, there isn't much I can do about that...
How much hardware is there to remove to get to the parts around the battery/AC Port? and should I maybe find a guide on how to take apart my tablet?

Should I plug it back in and see if it gets really hot again because right now it has no power and won't turn on at all?
Or should I see if there is a way for me to NVFlash so I can send it back to ViewSonic?

Send it back. The fact that the charger port is getting hot and that you smelt something burning is indicative of a bad hardware problem. You'll most likely end up sending it back whether we diagnose this problem or not.
And, I wouldn't worry about the custom ROM on the tablet. Other users have reported that VS doesn't really care about that sort of thing. Expect to be charged a small additional amount on account of it though.

I'm worried cause I was reading some previous posts on the subject of VS not replacing gtabs that were flashed, and they were very angry with ViewSonic for not replacing their tablet. It said the customer service being very annoying about people flashing different roms... I just want to make sure everything will go over smoothly...

Does anyone have an email address or a number that I can call for ViewSonic, I can't find it on their website? Thanks!

The Viewsonic G Tablet Support Line per the warranty card that came with my device is no longer working.
It was kinda tough to find, but phone is: (800) 688-6688
Good luck.

Thanks!

I have a G Tab that wont turn on either. Viewsonic gave me US Merchant's number to get it replaced.

No one answered, and apparently option 1 for Customer Support doesn't even work. I was able to leave a message, but I have no idea who I left the message for!

I resoldered the DC barrel charger and now it works fine. US Merchants called me with an RMA number 2 or 3 hours I left the voicemail.

My Transformer just randomly bricked :)

So I have a US Transformer, did the 4/23 OTA update a couple days ago. Everything works fine. Haven't even rooted yet because I was holding off for a little bit. Then today I was switching wallpapers, it rebooted, now it gets to the lockscreen and wont register finger touches So it's just stuck on the lockscreen. Haha. Currently searching the forums if anyone else has had this problem, but just wanted to rant.
Going through stock recovery, currently wiping data, hopefully it will restore to usable state **Crosses fingers**
I find it odd that you used so many smiles on such a horrible situation.
It's doubt it's bricked. Use the force power off method (10-12sec power button hold). Then wait 30 secs, restart (5-6 power button hold), then disable the lockscreen if it boots. Repeat this a few times, if still no joy RMA it.

Eh it sucks yes, but I'm being hopeful something I try will work to fix it instead of sending it back to ASUS / returning it, and waiting 50 million years for a replacement.

How can I disable the lockscreen? It boots straight up to the lockscreen and it wont register any finger touches to unlock. Then if I press the power button, black screen and I have to force power off. I tried the stock restore method, vol down + power, press power up when prompted, then power up again, but it just ends with the android and (!) symbol, then reboots and begin cycle again, I tried it again just to make sure.
Haha. I think I'm going to ADB in, put in CWM and pray I can flash a ROM over that way. Was waiting to root, but I guess I might as well jump the gun now.
Have you tried attaching a mouse? Maybe the touchscreen is not working but with mouse you will be able to unlock the screen?

Thanks for the tip, but I don't have the proper cables
But I had enabled USB debugging a while ago, so I think I'm going to try get this rooted, CWM flashed, and then I can flash a ROM on top and hopefully that will clear it up.

You're right you cant then. That's not bricked, it's just faulty. Looks like the digitiser is kaputsky. Probably something as simple as a loose wire inside but in order to check you would have to open it up and that would invalidate your warranty of course. Bad luck man, that's defintely an RMA job.
Do you guys over in the US have different consumer laws to us in the UK, all this talk of RMA on a brand new product is slightly baffling.
Assuming you bought it over the counter from somewhere like Best Buy, why can you not just walk into the shop with it, put it down on the counter with your receipt and (politely) say, this is brand new, its knackered, please give me another one out of your stock room.
Even if it was mail order, return it and demand a replacement by return of post, or a refund. If they won't replace straight away get a refund, and then walk into Best Buy and get one.
Surely there is no need to be hanging around waiting for Asus to fix a product that is only a week old.
I will be picking up Transformer number three from Comet tomorrow, what they do with the faulty one is their business.
And I will continue to take them back until I get a good one.

Most brick and mortar's do not have and have not had units, so taking them back isnt an option if you want a replacement. Since most people bought online, an rma to the etailer is the only option.
Update : Fixed
well, i rooted, flashed cwm, then flashed prime 1.2 on top of stock, and now it looks like everything works? no idea what the hell happened but now it registers my fingers lol. i guess mods can lock/delete this thread?

There are very few in stock, you can't just walk into most places and pick one up. The only option is to RMA back to Asus and wait some undetermined amount of time for a replacement.

TF700T totally dead, but I'm worried about the exchange [privacy]

So, I was watching a video. Battery was sufficiently charged, so I removed the power cord and the device immediately went black. Completely unresponsive after that and all attempts to resuscitate have failed (power button 3-seconds, power and volume-down for 12-seconds, power-button alone for 30-seconds... all of the things). No charge light, nothing. Its dead.
Here's the thing, I realized that I've got some sensitive data on there. Email. Dropbox. WAN access to my NAS, saved PDF's, incriminating pictures (just kidding). Holy crap... I can access my whole life from this thing. Now, if it was alive, I could wipe it. If I'd lost it I could (hopefully) remotely wipe it. With it dead there's nothing I can do... and if [when] I bring it back to the store for an exchange and somewhere down the line someone is able recover it in a way that I wasn't able to - ouch.
What can I do, other than password resets on everything. Am I being too paranoid? I dont know where these things end up!!

Well, if you don't have password protected screen lock, then there is a risk there. Right now you don't have too much of a choice really, either not send it in or buy a new one. If it's me I would send it in, I believe Asus would have some kind of corp policy to prevent their employee from temper with users' data. To have a piece of mind, you could call Asus tech support and ask them about your situation.

A MRI magnet would ensure it never boots up again again though at the very least and while the MRI wouldn't erase the information like it would on a hard drive it would probably damage the internal storage to some extent.
I'm sending mine back to amazon for a similar death, spoke to then and they have a pretty serious security guarantee for any info on returned devices. They assured they will clear any info.

OK, couple of thoughts. Did you try another cable to charge? Have you tried it on your PC? It sounds hardware related, just giving you some long shots to try. Also, do you have Accident insurance? And how long ago did you buy it, what is the return policy where you purchased it? Best Buy is great about returns, and the Geek squad may be able to assist you too.
I predict a debit card transaction from some Taiwanese restaurant appearing in your bank statement. j/k. Like already mentioned. Try a different cable, check for bent pins that are shorting via power connector. Try to plug into computer to have device come up as media storage. Tab the hell out of back and see if you can jar something back in place. Do you feel a vibration when you try and turn it on? If all else fails return it. Tell them its defective. Usually a store will mark it defective and just return it back to Asus, instead of trying to resell it. Or just send it directly back to Asus and have them repair it. GL
Try letting it sit plugged in for about 15 minutes. Then see if it turns on. Sounds like the battery may have come loose, or the software could have glitched and prevented the battery from charging. (second scenario is easily remedied by turning it off and on again if you can manage to get it back on again of course)
Change your google, email, dropbox, etc passwords and you should be fine.
I used to work in a repair center for another company. Although I can't speak for ASUS specifically, if we got a unit in we would plug it in and restore factory settings before even trying to turn it on. If it didn't power up, we started pulling it apart and replacing components. You can change your passwords just incase, but in that environment everyone has a "get it off the bench ASAP " mind frame so I doubt your information will be compromised.
Hope you feel a little better about it anyway.

>> No, no other cable to try. Doesn't seem likely. Its not short of battery. I was watching video, power was about 50-60%, I unplugged, and the instant the cable was removed, it went dead with no further signs of life after that. Yeah, its hardware related. Bought 3 weeks ago and will return under warranty.

Well Dropbox is easy. Just change the password from computer and it can't be accessed from tablet anymore.
Yet a bit curious that if you are so paranoid why even store some private data on cloud storage which basically is managed by some third party company. I am quite sure that people at dropbox COULD see any data there any time they wanted but I am quite convinced that my home porns don't interest them enough.
I hope..
Probably also if your unit is that much dead they need at least do factory reset before getting back to anywhere. I am assuming your motherboard got dead. You wouldn't be the first one.

No. Your device won't boot, but your data and internal storage will be 100% intact.
There is nothing magnetic in flash memory. In fact, it was originally created to be used in environments with high magnetic interference. Trust me, an MRI magnet will do nothing at all.
But please, continue believing that you will.
LOL, I actually thought that was another microphone hole like the other side (as they look exactly the same). But no, that didn't do anything.

I'm not saying I'm right but MRI magnets are pretty damn strong and they can mess up a lot of stuff that isn't necessarily magnetic itself.

Anyone have any experiences repairing these guys?
They're really easy to take apart compared to other tablets and phones I've seen.
I'd start by taking it apart and seeing if anything's detached / loose / broken.

Do you have a hdmi cable handy?
That could 100% confirm it is a screen issue and let you use the tablet for something even if you can not fix the screen.
Actually..I am in the same boat..
Bloody screen has gone dead on me.. this is a 6 month old B60..
I was watching a movie..closed the lid..walked 100 meters back to apartment opened it and blank screen..turned it on and off a few times.,,could tell by two beeps..
Anyway, I have been on a island off the Philippines and lucky had a usb drive with nv flash tools on it..so got apx mode going and nvflashed back to factory ICS.. plugged it into a HDMI flatescreen TV and used developer options to check touch points..
They are semi working, I had the dock with a usbmouse..as that's working fine..
So as it stands..looks like a new touch screen.. I will RMA it once back home as I have brought 3 from the same Asus dealer..
Will see if they replace free of charge and or what they charge..as I have seen the components needed for sale online @ taobao here out of shenzhen.. and I just did a strip down of a HTC evo so its much the same procedure..
Painful as I still have two weeks of tripping ahead of me..lucky I have another laptop stashed at a hotel and that I can pickup..
Will keep you posted on how it goes.

[Q] Need help with blank screen after replacement

Hi all. I'm having an issue with a 727R. I replaced a broken screen and now can't get the screen to stay on. Its a non rooted, factory 2.3.5 phone. When I turn it on, the sghi-727r screen pops up for several seconds and then dissappears, phone vibrates once, notification sounds appear shortly and all touch functions appear to work (by sound and haptic feedback). For all intents and purposes, this phone is on and working perfectly...if you're blind lol. I know the replacement screen works because it works perfectly if I go into download (odin) mode. I've been searching threads and haven't been able to come up with a solution, as most of the other blank screens are from bad flashes. Keep in mind that I am also testing this with the casing removed as it is a repair for a friend (if that makes any difference). Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Is the brightness maybe turned ALL the way down? When it finishes booting shine a flashlite on the screen and tell me if u can see text, icons etc...
I'll do that as soon as I get home this afternoon. I could only hope that's all it is, but i'm a little skeptical that I could be so lucky. forgot to mention that I have also odin flashed the stock rom back on just in case of software corruption. I would also think that I would get full boot logo's during the boot sequence, but hey!....its definately worth a shot! I've seen stranger things . Thanks for the quick response.

So you had display for start of boot and d/l mode? If so, then I'll go no farther until I get another replacement screen.:crying:. Come to think of it, when plugged in and off, the charge symbol shows up for a second and its discoloured (almost like its made of vertical lines that are pinks and grays). You may have just saved me a lot of time. I was leaning toward trying to adb error logs in hopes of finding something. Other than that it was going to be a reflow on the gpu since the phone did do a leap of faith from 6 ft up....and lost lol.

[Q] ***HELP*** Transformer won't turn on.

My transformer will not turn on. I used it a couple days ago but don't remember if I fell asleep or powered down. I went to turn back on this morning but there is no response. If I plug in the charger I can see the light come on. Also if I hold the power button it will give a quick vibrate after about 10 seconds. Has anyone else had this problem?
Its rooted and unlocked. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance for your time.

Already tried both. Problem is, is that there is no way to see if the device is even powered on... The battery meter on the screen doesn't even show up when its plugged in/charging...
Wow....that sucks.
If your computer doesnt detect it, then idk what you could do.... cuz if it did, then you could try to use adb to try and restarting t.
It sucks that its unlocked or i would have said to just contact asus to get it replaced.
Other than that, its hard to say...sorry man.

You can't send to ASUS when you use unlock tool they get your S/N and save it in case something like this happens. The only way I can see around this would be if you bought it at a Best Buy. They maintain 1 year manufacturer warranties if you bought from them so you could feasibly take to geek squad/Customer service and say it just stopped working. They wouldn't have record that you unlocked the tab. You would most likely need the receipt or some confirmation you bought it there though. Good luck.
Sorry friend, seems like you are in real trouble. I had a very similar problem, my only solution was to exchange it:

As you have unlocked yours, the warranty is no longer valid, and although Asus will fix it, you will have to pay to get it done. Since I'm on my second TF, and it even has had a problem that nearly bricked it, I am simply afraid to unlock it while still within the warranty period.
Might get lucky and see something with it connected to the HDMI port.

Good luck.

They did with my TF201 and this guys TF700 just a month ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240970
They took back my TF201 in August last year. I was told by BB it was done under the manufacturers warranty. It really does depend on who you talk to and how you approach them with the problem. Several people had to try different BB stores until they found that one person working there that either knew HOW to do it or was willing to take it back.
I had the same problem. Tried all the ideas mentioned above. I then put it on the charger for a day and afterwards it just booted like nothing had happened.
(mine is not rooted or unlocked)

TF201 is a different tab and basically BB and asus came to an agreement to take them back. The guy in your link got lucky. Probably only got a trade because of the extreme nature of the defect. Fact is you cannot just go into BB and get a new tablet under mfg warranty.

Exactly.
Now for the good news. My tablet came back to life last night after 3 weeks of trying. It was totally dead and wouldn't even vibrate anymore. plugged it in and it actually tried to boot right away but then turned off. Let it charge for a few and tried again and it booted no problem. Battery % is now showing accurately and it has now been running fine for 12 hours.
My problem is I went out and got an HP envy x2 (win8) tab on saturday. Now to decide which to keep... I love the envy but the new quad cores are coming out this fall which should really make it a versatile little laptop. Just don't know if I can live with android now that I have a taste of full win 8.

Any updates? My TF700 stopped turning on as well. Same recovery efforts, now waiting on the battery to drain. I unlocked/rooted for cleanrom (faster/better). Worked fantastic till last thursday and it refused to turn on in my college class. This could signal my exit from Android even though I have a lot of money invested in apps.

I recieved my tablet back from asus. Appears they swapped motherboards and i have a stock tablet again. No charges to me. Took about two weeks. Of course i will try and root/unlock again.

Good to hear. Aside from the snappier response of cleanrom my biggest issue with the asus firmware was the waste of screen space on the home screen. It had like a 1" border all the way around that you can't put an icon in and that annoyed me the most of all. Been waiting the battery to go completely dead before I send it in just hoping that fixes it.
