[Q] ICS Root? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Of course as the question says is there anyway to root the Transformer that's running stock ICS?

There's many threads about this. Search for ViperMod

ViperMod Option 1 (it says it is for Prime, but works fine on the TF101).

Wish I could get vipermod to work.
I run Linux Ubuntu and can't get my tf to mount to my PC

[Q] best root method? Tf101 3.1

I would like to root my tf101. Could someone link the best root method here please. I would search but for some reason no search method is on the xda app on the Tf. Going to website now but thought peeps could make a few suggestions. I am comp lit but only rooted my evo but am willing to learn.

Here, on a golden platter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714
I think there are essentially 3 root methods:
1) pure root method -linked above
2) nvflash
3)flash custom rom via CWM
The pure root method has the advantage that you can keep your data and the stock rom and also add CWM if you like.
nvflash is nice because it is unbrickable, so you can recover if you screw up. You should be able to recover from mistakes using other methods as well.
The custom rom via gingerbreak/CWM work too.
None of them are any harder/easier than the others. Adding drivers might add some complexity, but it isn't rocket science. You could try all three and then unroot to see which one you like better.
I would recommend installing ADB too since it's quite useful.
it also depends on which firmware version your on as there are different root methods for different firmware versions. also just use the browser on your TF to come on to xda...imo it's better then the app and the search function works.
there actually is a search method on the app i found, quite clumsy though in extras.

yes but it searches the entire xda forums whereas the browser searches the forum you are specifically in.
I used nvflash as it was the most point and click method. I did the adb style root on my last transformer and all went well but it seemed more likely to accidentally skip a step. Whatever you do just follow the steps closey and when you are done you can flash to your heart's content.

This should be the best Root-for-Dummies:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/342845-tool-nvflash-gui-tool-v11/
Notes:
* I havenot personally use it yet.
* The built-in stock-Rom is WW-version. An easy fix if you can find/replace with the US-version (nvflash version).
I tried the link at top but none of the links on that page worked. The boot.img file was broken for me. Can't mount or burn. I really have no idea what I am doing wrong. No idea where to get boot.bat either. I read through entire thread and wasted half my day. Going to research nvflash method now.

Just out of curiosity, did you Root your device? If yes, did you use a WI-FI only image? If you have not Rooted your device, maybe give some more information on the device specs to allow us to help you out even more?
Yes my Xoom is rooted. I'm using Tiamat 2.0 Rom and Tiamat Tachi Kernal

I am guessing you used this forum for the Download of your ROM for your tablet -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146153 -- and while reading it, I noticed that there are many times that solarnz says things like:
Version 2.0
Rebased off the 3.2 wifi image.
3G Support on Android 3.2
sdcard is now at /mnt/external1 and is viewable via MTP
Any application that can write to /sdcard can now write to /mnt/external1
usbOTG drives now mount at /mnt/usbOTG and act identically to the sdcard.
Now comes with the Katana 2.0 stock GPU kernel.
/MicroSD and /usbOTG synlinks to their respective locations in /mnt
Automatically modprobe all kernel modules, apart from the wireless module.
New wallpaper & charging icons
And this gives me the impression that you are maybe using a 3G Verizon Version of the ROM. I would suggest that if this is the case, you should change your ROM to a WI-FI only ROM. You obtained the Update when Verizon pushed out their latest update for the 3.1 ROMs.
Please Correct me if I am wrong on the specs of your device and I will help you as much as I can... I, too, have a Wi-Fi only Xoom tablet and just recently rooted it from 3.2 Stock From The Box to 3.2 Stock Root using this method -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760 -- and has been working for me in the last 48 hours
I hope I helped you some, and if I did not, please let me know and I will still try and help you till the problem is fixed (or someone will come in and help )
Thank you very much!!! I didn't think I would be able to get that update cause I have WiFi only Xoom. I thought that OTA update from Verizon was over 3G or 4G network. I'll check out the link you used. I'm not too good at this. I just know how to flash roms, kernals, and themes. I paid someone to root my Xoom. Since my Xoom is rooted can I just flash a WiFi only rom or do I have to follow all the steps on 2nd link u posted?

You are quite welcome ^_^... The stupid OTA updates for Verizon push out over wifi and (have been a vain in my dev rooted phones that do not have verizon accounts attached to them) haha!
You should be able to push a rom following the steps on the forums if you have Clockwork's ROM Manager (FREE in the market place) and TRUE Super User Access (AKA Super User App to test this out). All you need to do is place a few files in certain locations and wala, you have a WI-FI only Rom installed and ready for you to use ( I would note, that you should back up your apps and files and such on the internal memory, JUST in case you want your information that you have on it now again heh...) There are many apps for the bookmarks and such if you need that kind of backing up, but make sure that you do not leave anything you can't live without on the internal memory So All I need to say now is that IF you do have Rom Manager, and IF you do have True Super User on the device, then you should be good to go if you have the WI-FI only ROM that is needed to flash the Xoom Tablet (Please look for ClockWork ROM Manager tutorials to help you with SUCH and make sure you have a stable Rom (aka looking at comments) that you want to try out ^_^!!!)
I wish you the best and the fastest way of fixing your problem, and tell your friend he needs to note a Wi-Fi only tablet ROM is not the same as a 3g tablet ROM hehe!

Just bought the TF101 what root method, cwm, and Rom would you recommended?

Im sorry if you get this alot but I'm very confused on all your development posting on how to root my Asus TF101 build # 8.6.5.9 Android - 3.2
I was about to do BRKS root tool kit but I'm not sure I'm not new to rooting having a Droid incredible, atrix, and LG Thrill .. but honey comb and being a tablet I feel uncomfortable with just going to town on rooting.
My main reason is o.c'ing my kernel and I really want this to feel faster my phone beats my transformer with ease.. I'd like to play some game that ive bought on other devices. Why is my fav game modern combat 2 on Acer a500 but isn't on this or the thrive..?
So if y'all could help brother out with my questions I would love to do this asap

First thing you need to find out is what the serial number is. If it's below B70, then you can root it, if it's B70 you may be able to root it, if it's B80 or up, presently you can't root it.
It says S/N B60*******
Is this a good thing?

What would you recommended rooting method and Rom for first timer I'm going to wait to root till I get some good answer like I mentioned before I'm not gonna just dive right into it till i have more time for research ect.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Umm, honestly, I think the most straightforward one is the linux universal root. I used it for my b5, and it worked exactly as it should.
I tried it won't let me go to a desktop I've tried the Ubuntu w/script method but couldn't get it to boot past showing me the thinking mouse pointer
So I will try the other way I see a YouTube video on rooting the 3.2 and below so.. i shall see when I do it tomorrow
Thanks for the imput

Even if I updated to 3.2 I'm having a problem I put it into apx mode then it gets stuck saying phone update success but the app on the pc freezes..
Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk
use nvflash together with prime 1.4 rom it worked for me when i failed to root and wont boot at all...
Brks worked thanks I've tried all the 3 popular(stable) roms and liked revolver alot but wifi would take some times 5minutes to load so I'm on prime 1.9 and like it alot!

brk worked for me.
Yea it worked good I used an older version he has worked very hard on a new program for windows but unfortunately it did not work with my pc but his older bluescreen script did and I like my tf101 I just wish gameloft made games for it since it basicly the same thing as iconia a500.. I have all game bought just no way to play them..

DRM effing up your gameplay... gotta love it...
Yea it is and I've been in love with android but I'm seeing it becoming more n more strict as it gets older like its nasty counter part apple..
Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk
I have used the method on the thread below to root then unroot...install latest version of 3.2 and then to re-root again using the bootable CD method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198303
If I had been on a custom rom I might have had a different experience..then again maybe not.
I don't use one and not interested in overclocking ...maybe later as it gets older but my phone never showed much difference by doing so..... perception. If I played a lot of games my perception might be different.

[Q] Root transformer on ICS

Does anyone know if with the ICS update you can still root your device? I had to get mine replaced by best buy under warranty because of touchscreen issues and I would like to root it, but I already did the ICS update before I could root it. Shoot me if you must, but does anyone know if any of the tools still work?
u can use vipermod to root ics .
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I will search on XDA for that. Thank you!
there's a very simple root process, look on the General page I believe, if not check Development man its there and its labeled something very obvious with ICS in the title I believe
Its actually labeled [ROOT] TF101 ICS from OTA

tf101_ics_root not working on TF101 ICS

After rooting my tf101 ICS B50 9.2.1.11(w/tf101_ics_root), I upgraded to 9.2.1.17.
I ran tf101_ics_root again but got error - '/system/bin/sh: cannot create
/data/data/com.asus.backuprestore/files/busybox: Permission denied.
I did not uninstall Superuser to root - does it affect?
I also tried tfRoot.exe by ViperBoy - it ran but still not rooted.
Any help much appreciated. Thanks.
Never heard of tf101_ics_root.
My 9.2.1.11 was rooted with Vipermod.
I also lost root after updating to 9.2.1.17. My file explorer app was able to see the root directory but other apps weren't gaining root access.
I rooted again with Vipermod and everything went back to fine.

Interesting.
Did you run the backup utility before running the exploit?
tf101_ics_root did not work for me for 9.2.1.17 (it did work in 9.2.1.11)
Vipermod option 1 (ONE) works fine in 9.2.1.17
I'm ROOTED!!!
Since I'm using Ubuntu it was tough to figure out. But with the help of a buddy on Google+ I'm not rooted using Vipermod, it definitely works with option 1.
Root for tf101 9.2.1.17
Many thanks guys for the help. I will try PrimeTime.
Edit: Rooted my tf101 B50 9..2.1.17 with PrimeTime after others failed.
Many thanks to HornDroid.
I ran backup ultility a few times.
