Hey everyone I haven't got a clue about tablets which is why I'm asking you guys which tablet I should get. I need it mostly for school (ebooks, music, play videos online, etc). Speed isn't my biggest concern but I don't want to go back to Windows Me speeds either . Money is probably my biggest concern and I really don't want to spend a fortune on it mainly because my college funds are draining my money and my soul. Any advice would be appreciated .

so you want a honeycomb tablet or ANY tablet in general? is 450e too much? you want a good battery life? screen size 7 or 10 inch? you want future android updates? you want good xda community? tell more and i will answer

well honeycomb would be very nice but im assuming price skyrockets w/ it so a general tablet would be perfectly okay one i would prefer to be upgradeable. I would like a good xda community because i'm sure ill try to load something on it and brick it. Battery life isn't a big concern granted it doesn't die out in like an hour. Screen size... 10in would be nice but i wouldn't mind a 7in. As for price I'd like to keep it under 300-400 but as i look up tablets it doesn't sound reasonable lool

well here are 3 tablets that i recommend
dell streak 7
pros: cheap (on amazon 300e) , good xda community, you can get working honeycomb via xda, it has tegra 2 so its powerful (fast), 7 inch screen with gorilla glass
cons: bad battery life (average 3 hours when used), no official updates anymore.
samsung galaxy tab
pros: also pretty cheap (350e on amazon), also good xda community, can get honeycomb via xda, you can make calls with it, also 7 inch screen and gorilla glass, good battery life, 3g.
cons: single core A8 processor (not so fast), no official updates anymore.
asus transformer
pros: genuine 3.0 tablet, will get all coming updates very fast, good community, GREAT screen, 10 inch wit gorilla glass screen, VERY FAST, good built quality, awesome battery life (+9 hours), everything in this device is awesome
cons: expensive (450e (altought its cheap for a 3.0 tablet)), some devices have bad speakers.
so what do you say?

xoom is not cheap i recommend transformer
Transformer is having tons of problems from what ive heard, the good models are very good, but youre taking a shot buying one. Iconia's are also having problems but not as much. I would recommend those two though. If you dont need SD card or usb or any of that shabang, you can get a galaxy tab 8.9, they are relatively cheap, and have the perfect screen size (8.9" )

really my transformer works great, no speaker issue or any else issues... and i dont recommend samsungs tab (10/8.9) because it has touchwiz skin on top of honeycomb so the updates are going to take ages and as for iconia tab, it has locked bootloader and not so fast updates. asus has very fast updates, good support, much more developement than any of 3.0 tabs and no skin with honeycomb
i gotta say im quite impressed w/ the transformer price but if a lot of them are not working up to par that is quite disappointing. A random question - what's the difference between a tablet pc and a tablet? Is it just the keyboard addition? does the transformer come w/ the keyboard or is that a separate purchase?

dont know whats the difference between those 2 but the transformer is 450e without the dock and 550 with the dock...

Gotta throw in my 2 cents. I looked and Transformer and Xoom, but didn't like the price. Started hearing about the Advent Vega (Point of View Mobii), and that was my choice. Solid machine, less expensive, etc.

The Xoom is crap and way too expensive! Don't even consider it. If money wasn't a problem and you wanted a tablet, I would go with the iPad 2 or Samsung 10.1. Tablet PCs are obviously more expensive than tablets because you're actually buying a computer and not some toy. The best and relatively cheap Tablet PC is the HP TM2T. Keep in mind there are some tablet PCs upwards of 2k. Outside of the iPad, 10.1 and true tablets I wouldn't recommend anything. I think you would just be wasting money.

I would also recommend that you go to your local Best Buy and play with the tabs first hand. I did not too long in order to see HC for myself and really did like it, it is gorgeous. The Moto Xoom felt great in hands, but its screen sucked. It seemed faster than the Iconia A500 which also has the Tegra 2. That was odd. The Iconia had the nicer looking screen. I have had the original iPad and VS Gtab, but believe 7 inches is the way to go. Both 9.7 and 10.1 are IMO too big, but most people seem to disagree. Good luck!

first of all let me just say thank you to all of you - i appreciate ALL the feedback and device suggestions - i went and tried out a lot of the tablets. I have to say the xoom was most disappointing (quite heavy didnt feel right). The Advent Vega is really nice but i had a chance to get the asus eee transformer w/ keyboard at $350 so I jumped it and grabbed it. Good choice!!!! The Transformer is the obvious choice with the keyboard dock, especially if you plan to use it for school too. As you might have guessed, I have one too for much the same reason.....except school was out for me about 16years ago, however, I wanted something I can enjoy as a tablet but also use for work e.t.c

Just looking into getting a tablet and I saw Best Buy would be having these on black friday and was wondering if you guy still think the TF is worth it still. I don't have a ton to spend. But with all the new tablets coming out and Tegra 3 tablets coming out soon too, is this still worth it? I like the idea of adding the keyboard dock too and just us it to replace my laptop with something hopefully a bit quicker and all. Still seems to be a nice tablet. I have just started diving through the forums to try and find more info out about them, but I would appreciate any input from you guys. Also, do you guys think that an android tablet like the TF is a feasible replacement for a laptop in most respects or not yet? Thanks much!

depends on what you need out of the tablet. if you want something that is seconds faster is more capable in handeling true multitasking and plan on playing a ton of heavy games or do hardcore editing (when the right apps come out) then sure wait to get a quadcore tablet. otherwise the transformer is an excellent tablet esp with ICS coming around the corner. Also, look at some youtube videos of the transformer and read up on the new possible features of a quadcore tablet and then make a rational decision with what you actually need.
And also keep in mind that if you are waiting for the "Next Big Thing"...that's what you'll do....wait. IMHO the TF 101 does everything I need wonderfully. And at a pretty darn good price point. But you should read as much as you can from as many sources as you can. Then decide.
Something to consider also. I've not read anything if the TF 201 will be root-able.
Always get the product that fits your needs, not the "best" one. Cause the next best thing is always a few months away. The Tf101 (now) and the Prime are both going to be running ICS in a few months so its a matter of gaming, speeds and missing out on very few things that the transformer cannot do now.
Well thats my personal opinion. I highly doubt that quadcore means much without running a new OS but I could be wrong. Seems like dual core is plenty for Android. We haven't gotten to the point where tablets can replace notebooks entirely so it's kind of the middle gray area that's not essential if you ask me.

obviously, once the TF2 comes out, the TF would be out-of-date. but at the price best buy is offering it, it'd say it's definitely worth it. i paid full price for mine+shipping+tax, and i still think it's worth it.

Poll is 14 to 0 it is still worth it. I paid $559 for mine with dock. I regret getting the dock i never use it but sounded like a great idea. I also use my laptop 99% less and my PSP not at all even my dad decided he wanted one and he still uses a bar phone and PIII laptop from 2001 that barely runs XP.
I have the TF and dock and love it, so much that when newegg had the TF+ dock for 399 I bought a second one for my wife. I have almost completely used it to replace my laptop. I watch movies, access online college classes and my business' quickbooks portfolio...just to name a few of its primary uses for me. It its more than enough power for what majority would use a tablet/netbook for.
That being said, I will most likely get prime as soon as they are readily available. However,i have zero regret buying a TF when I did and if I didnt have one now and needed one I wouldn't hesitate to buy again. It won't be obsolete for a long time, this little powerhouse still has some life left in her.

So, it seems like most people still love this tablet which makes me less skeptical about getting the "last big thing." Another question, any opinions about the laptop dock? Is it worth it for most applications?
I use the TF to do lots of typing, between classes and paper work for my business it its a necessity. Our also makes watching movies and stuff nice cause you dont have to hold it. Those are the convenience uses.
But don't forget that the dock also provides you with 2 usb 2.0 slots, great for the 1tb portable hard drive, plus an additional full size sd slot. If that wasn't enough, asus felt they also need to add a set of batteries that increase life by about 6 hours. The nice thing about it is that if your tf is not 100% charged the battery power will transfer to the tf until it is, essential making the dock a portable charger as well.
I can't speak more highly of this tab and dock, to think,i was intending on buying a galaxy tab but it was sold out so I bought the asus on an impulse... Sure am glad I did!

At 250 bux, its worth it. At full price (32 gig version is selling for 399 on amazon) I'd wait. Especially since 'waiting for the next best thing' in this case is most likely only a month away.
My girlfriend has an ipad2. And while I prefer this OS, hers is much nicer to hold. And with the prime being thinner and lighter than the Ipad2, that's a huge selling point for me since the vast majority of the time I'm using this while lounging around.
while the TF2 is an overall upgrade from the TF1 its not exactly lightyears ahead of it. If you can snag the TF1 plus dock for a deal on black friday/cyber monday I'd do it. But if you cant then I would just get the prime.
Best Tablet Investment I Ever Made
This tablet is definitely worth buying. ASUS does a great job of keeping it up-to-date. It runs apps and games wonderfully. Like others have said, I have barely touched my laptop since buying it.

Get the Motorola Xoom. It is an awesome, compact device, it is a tad heavy (judging by your other two options I don't feel this an issue for you), but I do like the heft. It has a solid build quality, and I think it is the cheapest out of the bunch. If you live in the U.S., Best Buy has a family version that is less than $400.00, it has 16GB of in built storage and is the Wi-Fi only version. I've seen 32GB Wi-Fi go for $400.00-$450.00, this is the version I have, my friend sold it to me for $300.00, so I lucked out there. Not sure of the other two, but the Xoom can be rooted and there are sizable amount of custom roms available (though I haven't felt the need to root it yet), Xoom also has a mini-hdmi out port. Front and back cameras are okay though the dual led flash on the back camera is nice to have. The tablet is speedy, the touchsreen is bright (1280 × 800) and responsive, color saturation is good though not as vibrant when compared with my smartphone's qHD display, but that is a bit unfair, the Xoom's screen can holds it own very well and I have no major complaints at all. The battery life on this thing is incredible. I bought it from friend at around 3PM and he forgot the charger, it was at 62% battery life, through using the device and using the Wi-Fi to download and install my apps/Widgets, it lasted me into the early morning hours the next day. Of course heavy media playback will reduce the battery life, but still out of all the mobile devices I have owned, I was very impressed with battery life. In the end I feel the Xoom is an all around great tablet especially for the when you factor in the features and cost, you certainly won't regret purchasing it, after owning one I can now understand why the Xoom was one of Cnet.com's Best of CES 2011 Winner.

Xoom was the winner of CES, but will it be the winner in the end of 2011?
That's the place of the Transformer.
I can be 100% sure that before the Prime showed up, the first Transformer was the best Android tablet. So don't be hesitate
I was just about to ask the same question as the original poster. The only difference being, the acer iconia a500 being cheaper (16gb version, 32gb version costs the same as xoom and transformer). If there was a big price difference the choise would be much easier, but now I do not know what to do. I was leaning towards xoom, because it's the smallest of the bunch, has 32gb and is considered well built. Iconia is the cheapest and would make the most rational buy (plus the standard USB is a big plus) but does not look as good as the other two. And transformer - the biggest advantage is the dock for those who want it and I don't. What else is going for it, except the screen (is it really so much better comparing to let's say xoom)?
What do you think of iconia - built and functionality wise when comparing to the other two? Would you rather go for xoom or transformer when the price is identical (transformer is 16gb without the dock and xoom is 32gb)?

Just as a sidenote, and I have no idea whether you even considered this one or not, but the Viewsonic GTab is the same basic hardware as the Xoom save for the fact it has but 512mb RAM. Mine is fast, smooth, EASY to root and has several stable ROM's along with the fact that a person almost has to TRY to brick the danged thing. At about $250 it is, IMHO, an underrated STEAL.
I am looking to begin making apps for the Android platform. I know my way around coding for it pretty well but the time has come to get past the emulator (great tool!) and get my hands on some hardware. I have narrowed it down to two choices, and they are years apart from each other.
The $200 Nook Tablet and the $500 Asus Transformer TF101 (with dock)
I know it's like comparing apples to pears and such, but I wanted to know: Is the Nook Tablet ENOUGH to make apps? I assume to do such a thing, it would be best to get it 'rooted' so I am not restricted by B&N. Obviously $200 sounds much better than $500 but is the Asus Transformer worth it from a development standpoint?
As far as use past developing small games, I would watch netflix and surf the web occasionally. Maybe read some books but I still like the feel of actual paper for that so it's not a HUGE selling point.

The nook tablet will give you your basic needs and should get you where you want to go. The Prime on the other hand does have better support and compatibility in development and IMO is overall a better device. In the terms you need the tablet for, it seems the Nook would be a better choice (especially with the price). If you needed it for stuff like heavy web browsing, videos, hardcore gaming, etc., the Prime would obviously be the better choice.

Oh, my bad, I misread your post. The Transformer also has larger development too. If you want though, you could consider the Prime (lower that $500 and depending on where you buy it, the dock included as well). Yes, it seems you are missing something. Another thing to think about would be just buying a phone to use if having a tablet isn't critical. The galaxy nexus GSM can be had for $300 new from Google for example and is a great reference/ Dev device. Just another thing to consider.

On the phone topic, I like my Samsung Juke very much, for some reason I don't like mixing my phone as anything else but a phone. Plus monthly billing being so expensive and such... :crying:

They will both work fine (just that compatibility may be better on the Prime).

The TF300 is the Pad but is still as powerful as the Prime. The TF101 has a Tegra 2 (dual core) processor while the TF300 has a Tegra 3 (4 + 1 core processor - Quad core plus a power saving core) processor. The TF101 can get you where you're going though (and for basic things - so could the NT).
We're talking 250% percent price difference and quite little in usability.
I say Nook Tablet, and the 300$ for worse times.

Need help deciding what tablet to get I currently have an iPad 4 retina 64gb, and I like it but have come to the conclusion that I only like it because the apps are optimized for the tablet screen, have the note 2 and love it and want the same experience on a tablet instead of waiting around for a jailbreak to get somethings that I can do on an android tablet. I like to play video games and the moga or plug in an Xbox 360 controller is a plus for me widgets and all that fun stuff I like. The choice of tablets that I'm considering is the Asus transformer infinity with keyboard dock or the nexus 10 leaning more to the infinity because with the keyboard dock it can replace my laptop with splash top connecting to my Mac mini it is a laptop at all times. Things that concern me is screen resolution, and tablet optimized apps any help is much appreciated.

Except for the fact that the Nexus 10 has a) availability issues and, more importantly, b) quality control issues that seem even worse than with the 700. You furthermore do not get the added battery life because of the powered dock, and less storage options. Why do you put forward the N10?
More on-topic, though: it really depends on preference, as Thats OK already said. I really do like the battery-powered dock and the extra oomph that gives -- I have a relatively long commute and irregular shifts, so it pleases me a lot not having to recharge every 12 hours, or whenever a wall socket is available somewhere. The screen resolution is fine -- I happily read technical (medical) books and articles, for which the radiographs, charts and stuff all come out really nicely, and even the private reading is a pleasure (text is crisp, contrast is good). Nah. I'd pick the TF700 if it came out now if I had no other options. However... and we also discussed this last week -- you really should use the serch function, you know -- someone I forgot the name of mentioned that soon a bunch of new models of several brands will be announced soon, and it might be prudent to wait it out a bit. You might shoot yourself in the foot when buying into an aging system, no matter how well it performs. Then again, in tech, there's always something better just around the corner, and if you wait, you can wait forever.

You should wait and see the new Samsung tablet line-up (new models should be announced soon) before buying anything, well at least this is what i would do.
Search with Google for Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (this link is in italian, but you will get it - > http://www.everyeye.it/tech/notizia/ecco-la-line-up-dei-tablet-samsung-per-il-2013_148080) .
MWC is coming tomorrow and I am sure the right thing to do now is WAIT!!! Many new awesome products may be introduced during MWC, which may include tablets. I was hoping for a new Transformer tablet, but it seems that ASUS will introduce a new Padfone, which technically can still be considered a tablet.
While you may end up with a better tablet if you wait, that same logic would mean that you would never buy a tablet since there are *always* newer and better devices around the corner. Even if the "perfect" tablet gets announced tomorrow, you then need to wait another few months before actually getting your hands on it (if you are lucky) - and even then, how knows what will happen (could end up being a dud). You just can't tell the future!
My advice - go to Best Buy today, mess with a few different models for an hour or so and buy one NOW! We are not talking about purchasing a new house here - it's a tablet that costs ~$500 that will be worn-out and/or outdated in a year or two anyway. Satisfy the urge and go get what seems best - you won't regret it - any modern tablet is an extremely fun device to use!
It's easy for us to tell you to wait - we already have a tablet that we are thoroughly enjoying!

IMO 32 gb for the internal memory is plenty to hold your apps and some media. I put all the space-intensive stuff, music, pics, videos on external SD/micro cards anyway.
The dock, providing a good keyboard, extra battery, USB and extra SD card slot is one of the main selling points for this tablet.
If you want a dock, the TF700 is your best choice - no doubt about it.
If you don't need/want the dock you have quite a few other choices for a great tablet out there.

I thought about waiting myself. However, I wanted Tegra platform, and it looks like the earliest a Tegra 4 TF would release is in July. Side by side, I don't see a difference in the quality of the screen between an ipad 4 and a TF700. OTOH, the TF700 screen gets very very bright for outdoor usage.
As to storage, I've got a 32GB TF700, a 32GB microsd card installed, and the keyboard dock with a 16GB SD card in it; that's roughly 80GB of raw storage here and I can easily expand it. With the dock, battery life is phenominal. The tiny keyboard is taking some getting used to, but it's very handy. In fact, I haven't even turned my old dell laptop on since I got this. Just haven't needed it. I use a PS3 dualshock controller and a micro-hdmi cable for emulator gaming on the big screen. It's pretty cool. Haven't played any of these SNES games since I was a teenager.
The touchwiz launcher on your note 2 isn't available on a transformer. Asus has it's own launcher, but it's very nice. I suggest you try one out in Best Buy. They have a sale this week, the TF700 is $429, and the KB dock $99. That's like $120 off full price. Though, I think they change their sales on wed, so I'd decide quickly.
I don't regret buying the TF700 one bit. It's a good tablet/laptop replacement, and less than half the price of Asus's own ultrabook with a touchscreen. The only thing I'm really sacrificing is a full windows platform. In all the time I've had my old laptop though, I never really did anything on it that I couldn't do on this tablet, and this tablet does it for over 8 hours longer, lol.

Seriously, fck samsung and there crappy-soft-plastic build quality. Anyone who would consider a samsung product does not know anything about build quality. The ridiculously high resolution? Not worth it. Why push a higher pixel count than the retina display if you cant see pixels beyond retina display. All of the android tablets anounced for this yr do not improve on the infinity except for vizios tablet that uses a tegra 4, and who knows when that will actualy be released. The tegra 4 is expected to ship on devices late this year. Of tablets on the market a non-stock infinity handles them all with no issue. I can confirm this bc i work at a tech store and have tested them all against my infinity. No android tablet can replace a laptop like an infinity. Since buying mine 8 mos ago I havent once used my old laptop.

Just want to make a slight correction, minus the keyboard dock, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z has much better hardware specs than the tf700 (Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2 GB RAM, even 4G LTE). Since it is going to be released in May in the US, it will be a mistake not to consider it.
Dang must be a local best buy sale, mines still at $499. Though about the xperia but really like the idea if the dock. With the Ubuntu coming out it could make the tf700 VERY interesting.
If I get it I will be getting a dock. Was just wondering if it's better to get the 64 or just have a microSD and SD in the dock and call it good.

The problem is that you can't get a keyboard dock with the Sony, which is one of the TF700's main selling points!
I cannot understand why other manufacturers aren't offering an optional keyboard dock - I simply wont even consider a tablet without a keyboard dock -ever. It just makes the device that much more useful...

Absolutely not - a bluetooth keyboard is not even close to a true keyboard dock. A true keyboard dock is integrated with the device - it becomes part of the device. It includes an a battery to charge the device, a USB port, a SD memory card slot, customized buttons on the keyboard, a trackpad with two mouse buttons and even doubles as a stand for the tablet (which even charges the tablet!).
On the other hand, a bluetooth keyboard is just another separate accessory that you have to lug around, actually requires batteries instead of providing a battery, has no expansion slots and is, in general, a pain in the a$$ to work with (I know, I've tried).
So, as you can see - while they do make bluetooth keyboards that would work, they do not provide anywhere near the level of integration or functionality of a true keyboard dock. It's not even close.

Not really...
I've tried a couple I have the RockSoul BT keyboard it's a hassle and disconnects periodically.
For me a keyboard isn't a necessity.
Now a blue tooth mouse... :good:

I load all my large files like media and videos on SD/micro cards, basically use the internal for apps and such only. 32gb is plenty for me in that regard...
64gb micro in the tablet, 64gb SD in the dock + optional USB stick.... I don't think I'll ever run out of storage on this baby!
