It's works pretty well for it's early stage. I have it on a Captivate now and it does have some functionality. No camera, GPS seems borked, but 3G and WiFi do function. Things are looking up folks. We may actually see some Ice Cream on our phones! The Movie Studio doesn't work (for me at least, not sure about others), but it's a welcome feature once fixed. Something Android has been missing since the start. This could prolly be Hellraised, but I'd wait until more kinks are worked out. It's very Alpha at this point.
If all these other phones are getting ics ported b4 us then hope might as well be lost We don't have as much dev interest as all these other phones do.

Well, if we wait for the cappy or i9000 to get it first, basicly our infuses is the same device, just bigger and a tiny bit different. Then linux could probably port it pretty easily.
Wow!
That was fast. Infuse Kids....I think we're gonna see ICS before AT&T blesses GB!
And that would be a shame. I'm very excited. I'd love to try this out on my wife's Cappy for a spin. Will a nandroid backup successfully restore the custom GB Rom she's rocking now if I flash ICS?
WTF my old phone gets ICS before my current newer phone. I hope we get something soon.
I tried messing with it today changing the boot.img and some egl and lib files...havent got it to boot yet....im thinking we r gonna need a kernel with modified mtd partitions before we get a patially working port..

There have been more that have been locked as off topic. It seems like every day there's a new topic about someone porting ICS for another phone.
And this doesn't really mean ICS for us any more than the I9000 port did.
Regardless, I have some time off finally, so I'm working on something.

Yeah, I'm close to getting something running I think, but I'm not working on it again until Monday, sorry. I don't have a Linux dev system set up at home to work on it with, so I stick to working on it at work and I'm out until Monday.

We will probably never get official ics from att/Samsung...the stupid developers working for them can't even seem to get a good gingerbread running.
If only they hired actual developers like jt, entropy...just about all the devs on xda actually...
Besides an unofficial will run smoother than an official ever would...

agree on the dev we have...awesome!
But if juggalo4life (really 4 life?) kidding...chooses to go the beta/unofficial route, chose wisely, not for the beginner, requires homework...
There are lots of great Custom Gingerbread ROMs that are stable and have lots of support. Till the Dev bring ICS to XDA via the Dev section where it belongs...

Exactly. Homework, its not hard to do some research. The fact we just barely got a somewhat functioning update of 2.3.6 GB for the infuse will show there is no chance of an actual ICS update. We will be left and forgotten by Samsung devs but we have our own devs here that are progressing at an amazing rate. ICS release from Jt most likely won't be posted in the Dev section here. But other with post their builds soon no doubt. Nunhugger is doing his homework and I think we might just see some ICS from the collective(fingers crossed). Anyways... what Joe said. Custom GB/Homework before ICS

I have to agree. It ain't coming officially...but you will have some options soon. Also, as others have said, so your homework. Read, read, read...then when done, read a little more. Then when you think you are ready to flash...read it one more time. Our devices are pretty hearty when it come to brick defense, but not doing your homework might lead you to doing without a phone until you get a jig, or God forbid, a replacement.

The basic requirements would be same CPU, same baseband. Best if the wifi, GPS, touchscreen, audio chips are identical also. If not it would be quite difficult since some kernel hacks would be required.

So I'm opening this thread here for two reasons...one because I will eventually throw a test build out here as this is in alpha stages even if the video shows otherwise lol and 2 because I know most of you guys are like "erikmm is a bum he hasn't put out a new rom or an update to his roms in over 12 hrs " lol.
So this is a sneak preview of what I've been working on so far behind the scenes.
It's a port of the whole Value Pack from Sammy to the i9000... since they don't want to give us a Value Pack I took it upon myself to give us the Value Pack we deserve. Ok ok I know most of you guys didn't even read my little rant and are watching the youtube video. Lol
Well here it is:
Edit: the videos it previews or suggest are f'n hilarious lol
Downloads will eventually come up here as soon as I hit the beta stages.
So far:
I finally got /data to work *not the actualy internet as I can't even test that lol *
I can now install apps and have them save to the /data/app/ destination and
of course that means wifi is working

Once you have a base rom like cm7 its easy to port roms. Easy being a simple word in this case. You still have to run debug logs but a lot of it is copying from one rom to the other. There are several guides out that explain how to port the various roms. Search the main android development thread you will find the guides posted there.

Dont think Im taking away from what you are doing. I know your not doing these port exactly how the guides suggest. I was just saying using cm7 for a base makes it about 75% easier to port. Seeing as how you dont have to convert samsung proprietary things.

They did announce that feature pack update, plus on release the device was given its 2GB of ram just for future support of new android versions.
My guess is it will get 4.2.1 official, but that will be the end of OTA. I have a feeling though CM and AOSP roms will be around for a while. Too many people have the US models of the GS3's, and due to the fact MOST of the code is similar between devices, it should not be hard to keep them all going as long as theres someone who cares to work on them.

The development hasn't stop just slowed down. There are 4 new ports and some of the older roms have moved on to 4.2(mainly CM,liquid smooth and slim bean). The other roms are still being updated. There is also a new ROM based on 4.2 called Pure Google. Team Baked is working on a 4.2 based ROM.

As a backup to my S3 I have a Samsung Fascinate & just put JB 4.2 on it. If there is still development for a now antique phone, you really don't have to worry about the S3 not having development for a long time to come.
