Hello, Im a bit curious to know if the face unlock is possible for the T-mobile G2x. Im new to the phone, and i just recently rooted the phone. Must i download/install roms to be able to?? If so, how do i? Thanks!
your name is exactly how I feel like answering this question of yours lol, but it is a built in ICS feature only, so you would have to use one of those roms and one of the latest gapps. search and read before posting (even google) and you'll be good.
Actually its not just an ICS feature. I've been using facial recognition lock screens for a long time on the g2x. If you don't want to flash the beta 4.0 rom then just go to market and search for any number of facelock apps.

There are many apps that offer face unlock but none do the job better than the face unlock on the ICS builds....I have tried some face unlock apps before only to see that they eat a lot of my battery....so ur better of with ICS rom rather than apps

Hello All!
Like many others I am getting a bit pissed off with the time it is taking HTC to release the 2.1 update for the Hero/G2. (Now June???)
While waiting I have notice a number of hacked or custom ROMs and have been watching with great interest. It would seem the best way to keep your Tech up to date is to use the community ROMs.
I’m in the process of getting a Goldcard and downgrading……
So, the question now is:
Which Hero/G2 custom ROM do you use and why?
I would like AndNav2 or Google Maps Navigator to work.
Your thoughts please
Ta Eddie
I rooted this weekend for the same reason. I use the Fresh 2.0d ROM. I like it because it is based on the leaked Sprint 2.1 ROM, but all the bloatware is stripped out to make it run a lot faster. I also chose it because it is fairly active and there are a lot of little modular updates you can do to change some of the stuff like the vanilla lock screen fix and the OpenGL ES problem that makes live wallpapers not work.
i too am thinking about using a new rom due to the extreme amount of time in between updates. When spring releases the official 2.1, will it be easy to switch back, or will i really not even feel the need to do that?
IMO I think you will be happier with the ROMs than the official Sprint release. You have more control over the phone with a faster ROM, not to mention WiFi tether. I regret bit making the move earlier.
tried villain5.2 and 5.4. both are better than the stock, by better I mean faster. but am in love with slide villain. so smooth. the best ever.

I've been contemplating on rooting my Nexus S, since I've done so on my G2 and G1 since it was necessary since their stock roms were slow but I don't see anything wrong with the Nexus S at all. Also, I definitely think the unlock picture on a rooted Nexus S is ugly.
Anyways, post why it was necessary to root your Nexus S besides the fact that you're an android-fanatic
What do you use which needed root?
- Titanium Backup
- Flashing ROMs (Doesn't require root, but its a gateway toward flashing)
- Custom Kernels
Basically, I mess with my phone because stock is boring and not flashing/rooting your phone is well... BORING!
Exciten things up.
Let's not forget the amazing Chainfire 3D!
My first move is always rooting and flashing a stock deodex rom so I can theme it.
Also I use apps for security as well like droid wall, orbot, lbe privacy guard, my backup pro, lookout, which mostly require root.

I have not found a compelling reason to root yet, either.
I rooted both my previous Galaxy S and Vibrant, but that was because they were performing poorly and Samsung is the worst at upgrading their [email protected] software.
But the Nexus S has been pretty stable and I've seen nothing to make me root and play with ROMs (and I am weary of getting back into the WM6 cycle of constantly flashing, hoping that the next build will be the one stable one....)
I have settled on MIUI.ADW.Launcher as my default (using Suave HD icons http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16804800, which I actually like better than the MIUI ROM), so I really can't see a reason (yet) for going through the hassle of rooting and flashing with this one.
really thats what this whole community is based on, if you are not gonna root it, then you CANT do anything thats discussed here at XDA. I mean I dont even hesitate to root a phone as soon as I get it. Actually make sure I can root a device before I buy it
Yeah, I always think like that too, espcially with htc devices I love pure android and if i were to get any htc or custom skinned phones I would root to change rom but the nexus s non rooted is pretty stable and looking at the rom development in nexus s, majority of it is AOSP-based. but thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll stick to non-rooted until something cool pop ups that needs root or if i wanna further customize
ps: Man saying this, I feel like a traitor to xda and I shouldn't even be here lol
PS PS: one reason for me wanting to root the phone before g etting is was to get HD video but it's unfortunately a hardware problem. blah oh well
Voodoo sound and color

You guys keep posting things that don't require root
I only recently rooted so I could take screen shots. However my bootloader has been unlocked since the day I got the phone

I originally did it for BLN.
Just relock it when you are done - no unlock picture
I have a question for u why isnt it necessary lol.
But all in all it unleashes more fun for u and the phone. More roms more apps more battery more power. More jealousy from people that dont have one
Delete unwanted apps etc tweak stuff up

well depending on network, it unlocks the wifi hotspot capability
I mean, I've rooted my phones before but the Nexus S has no problems with speed, its filled with only google apps no bloatware, it's pretty fast already, and I'm always on XDA to find more android development but I couldn't find a reason to root the phone so I just wanted to see what you guys specifically root it for
Same here i used to root my phones like g1 and vibrant. But i dont find a reason to do so now as everything i need already works.
Keeping it stock i can get the latest update directly from google asap
the primary reason was the addiction to flash. The will to try all the roms that comes out
My addiction that started with the og Droid of flashing something new to my phone just for the hell of it.

hey guys, i just got myself a nexus s (switched from a captivate, to galaxy s 2, then to nexus s) and was looking into flashing the ICS port. I had done some reading about locked and unlocked bootloaders, so i wanted to know does it matter whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked if i were to flash the ICS port? i ask because i know there are specific roms for each bootloader in the android development.
also another question, if anyone here could give me some feedback on the daily use of the ICS port, whether they are happy with it. i've watched a couple youtube videos of the recent port and it seems to work quite well, but i wouldn't mind some feedback on it first. lately ive been running MIUI, so im content just using that if the ICS port isn't at that stage yet.
thanks for any input
You didn't do much reading if you don't know the bootloader needs to be unlocked to flash a custom recovery which in turn lets you flash custom roms.

i guess i may be wrong, but i had read this thread and figured it wasnt necessary
[GUIDE] Root & recovery WITHOUT oem unlock & wipe (2.3.2 & older, plus now 2.3) --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865
i realize that its for the lower versions of 2.3 but thats what it's running right now. whoever owned it before hadn't updated it. but either way that answers my question, so ill unlock it
in terms of the usability of the ics ports. I've been using Drew Garen's ports for about two weeks now. Extremely usable and stable. Its almost impossible to tell its an sdk port. His current beta 10 has everything working except for bluetooth and a slightly inaccurate gps. He said that he got a true ics rom working using the galaxy nexus dump so that should be released soonish.
Very good port indeed. However, Im having trouble to make whatsapp work properly. Contacts never shown in the app.... anyone know how to solve this?
thanks for your input guys. i did go through and read quite a bit of pages through the rom thread (worked my way from the back forward), and it seemed like it should be good enough for me. i don't really ever use bluetooth, and gps occasionally, so i should be able to manage with it. and i do use whatsapp, so ill install it tomorrow and see if i figure any solution out to your problem jpvalenz
hey guys . i'm rooting my phone for first time. and i want a custom ROM for my nexus s 9023 ,, i wanted to know which rom has face unlock working .
thaning you in the mean time awaiting your positive response
Codename android has it and it works well in light conditions. Don't use it myself though. I'm sure most ics roms have it too though.
Sent from me to you via the tinternet thingamebob.
AOKP Milestone is also work.
But i won't use in NS.
NS front cam.... it suxxs
It could't recognize my face most place at all

try Bigxie rom or CM9 + Matr1x kernel.
worked only 3 times and then never again
I tried it on the Nexus S with stock ICS with this file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405790
I never used it again either.
I never could get face unlock to work. Someone on these forums had recommended Visidon AppLock though and it's great! Quite customisable in the paid version & it's also a Tasker plugin so you can have it active whenever you like. Mine activates when I'm not near my wifi.
I have tried this on the first ICS sandwich ROM i tried. I believe it was CM9. It was extremely unreliable on all but the brightest conditions.
Its pointless. Any from dev that's tries to implement it is wasting time, even with great written camera drivers the phones camera hardware sucks. Just get a gnex or sgsII if its important.

Just wanting to get to know this phone as well as you guys do.
I had a HTC thunder****.. i had it rooted etc and really enjoyed it for a while but i went threw three of them because of data dropping issues.
I recently got this s3 and i love it so far, I would like to get into the rooting etc with it and just had a few questions i guess.
Does the s3 respond the same way with the rooting processes, like i would have to root it, then flash roms/radios etc?
Is there a way to get the free hotspot without rooting the phone (mine is in 100% stock configuration)
What roms do people recommend over certain ones? do certain ones have advantages that ones dont?
Thanks guys! - Will
The correct process for the s3 is to root, then unlock bootloader, then you are free to flash whatever you want.
The only way of getting free hotspot that I know of is FoxFi from the market. It doesn't work for everyone though.
If you like the stock Samsung interface (TouchWiz), then I would recommend a TW rom They get rid of most of the Verizon installed crap but still allow you to use all the features the phone came with. For a more pure google experience and the ability to run the most up to date version of Android, try an AOSP rom. Look through the development forums and see which ROMs have the features you want! Easiest way to decide what you like is to flash and try each one separately.

Sounds good man, i'm going to dig around in here for a while
Backup your imei too. You might never need to recover it but don't risk it. It only takes a second.

I came here from the Thunderbolt too. Same process to flash ROMs and such. You'll love the S3.
If you like AOSP, I recommend trying out Liquidsmooth v2.9.
Glad to see you here. Welcome.

I also came here from a Thunderbolt. The rooting and ROM installation process is slightly different than what was done on the TBolt, but if anything its even easier and as with the TBolt there are lots of smart people around to learn from and get help from. One thing you will come to learn is Aroma, which is where a lot of the customization happens. bets advice is to read through the various developer threads to get a Sense (oops, no pun intended) of what ROMs do what, look like what, and have more or less challenges. You will also see threads that will walk through various ways to gain root, unlock the bootloader, and flash ROMs. The good news is there seems like there are way more good ROMs available for the S3 than for the TBolt.
