I haven't had this phone for a while so i forgot most of the stuff. But i gave it to my mother and i noticed theirs a new radio out which i think would be good for her. But I don't want to brick. So how can i find out if the MD5 is good for my mothers phone.

i tried that. but idk what files to load to find out if its the same.
The md5 is posted in the thread. I use Android File Verifier from the market. Just locate the PG06IMG.zip through app and you'll see the option to check the md5sum.
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Android Terminal Emulator [note: not all phones can do this since the md5sum utility may not be present/installed] by typing "md5sum filename"
Clearly change "filename" to the file name you are checking on

md5 sum is a busybox command...so if you're on stock unrooted sense it won't work in terminal since it doesn't have busybox. "Most" rooted sense roms have busybox installed though along with bash

I see this everywhere, but what exactly is it and what does it mean? I rooted, flash cm7 rc2, flash back to stock Rom then re-flashed AR 4.0 b3.1 all without checking md5... Any negative effects to that? Also I am running stock kernel and whatever radio was pushed to my phone during the one click rooting process...

It's basically a file fringerprint. Verifies file intergrity.

Open up astro on the phone, navigate to where your file is. Click and hold, press details, and give it a minute, you'll see the checksum.

Whichever file you download. If you downloaded the ROM, and want to check the ROM's MD5, open astro, long press the ROM, and check MD5.
If it's a radio you want to check, long press the radio file in Astro and check MD5
I actually didn't know Astro would do this. I found a free program for my computer that will check MD5 sums. Put the file on the SD, tell the program where the file is, it gives me an MD5
Helo,
I got to this issue, some how i got into some app that promise to fixed MD5 sum.
I used it but, it messed up with my back ups.
Is there anything that i can i do??
it's not possible to fix MD5 while you have already got an broken backup
if you messed up your backups... sorry, nothing i can do
Renaming your backups via root manager also messes up the md5 sum. Rename with rom manager... but once rom manager messed up one backup of mine, just once.
Well.. Theres a fixer called 4EXT Recovery control. But LG phones are not supporter a the moment.
I know 4EXT fixes MD5 sum because i used to have my touch 4g and it did fix it..

Unfortunately there is nothing you can really do about this. Once it is messed up it is messed up. I have not heard of any way to redo a MD5 sum.
Quick question what recovery exactly do you have ? I was on rev cwm and renamed my backup and it wouldn't recover it but flashed official cwm and my restore then worked

There is a way, just fixed one couple of days ago. You have to transfer ur back up to pc and check each backed up file with md5check and compare them to the md5 (open it with notepad+) generated by recovery and make sure they match, then change the generated md5 to match the md5 of each file backed up.
NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!
Ok i would give a try..

I deleted a md5 before so couldnt recovery but all i did was grabbed the .md5 from another back and then used md5 check sum windows app to gen a check sum then input the number into the nandroid.md5 file. Everything worked great.
Did even think of your method but seems like yours would do the same.
HEY GUYS I JUST FOUND THE KEY TO THE PROBLEM---clockwork-recovery MD5 mismatch IS VERY SIMPLE...
1.OPEN SD CARD IN WINDOWS.
2.DOWNLOAD 2 SOFTWARES ( MD5 CALCULATOR AND NOTEPAD++) JUS GOOGLE THEM AND INSTALL.
3.OPEN CLOCKWORK FOLDER IN SD VIA COMPUTER->BACKUP->(YOUR BACK).
4.NOW RIGHT CLICK ON NANDROID.MD5 AND EDIT WITH NOTEPAD++
5.GREEN HIGHLIGHTED PHRASE IS A KEY.
6.RIGHT CLICK ON REST EVERY FILE IN BACKUP FOLDER INDIVIDUALLY->MD5 CALCULATOR
7.MATCH THE KEY TO THAT OF NOTEDPAD++ FILE
8.IF THEY DONT MATCH COPY KEY FROM MD5 CALCULATOR AND PASTE IN NOTEPAD
9.SAVE AND EXIT.
10.NOW TRY RECOVERY IT;LL WORK.

Wikipedia said:
MD5 digests have been widely used in the software world to provide some assurance that a transferred file has arrived intact. For example, file servers often provide a pre-computed MD5 (known as Md5sum) checksum for the files, so that a user can compare the checksum of the downloaded file to it. Unix-based operating systems include MD5 sum utilities in their distribution packages, whereas Windows users use third-party applications.

Successful verification of the md5 file shows that the files are the same as at the time of packing and "not corrupted".
Consider this,
You flash a ROM which did not have a correct md5 checksum.
It may mean that the ROM was corrupted due to some reason and you may end up with a bricked phone.
though the chances of this happening are pretty low with a backup.. but better safe than sorry.
and i changed my username cause i liked it

Well yeah, MD5 is a great thing when it comes to checking consistency of a file, but for example, it bothers me because i have about 5-6 rom backups and they are all difrent roms, so i need to change the name of folder from date-time stamp to name of the rom, but when i do that i cant restore it any more because MD5 checksum apperantly checks the folders name also so i have to rename it again to date stamp... but sometimes it can be useful... just sayin'
I don't think cwm checks the backup names. I've got a couple of backups renamed to the ROM names and they work well.
well i dont know then, when i change their name back to the time stamp like 2012-03-15 11.12.32 then the restore will work, but when i leave a name like CM 7.2 rc5.5, when i chose restore, it prints out md5 checksum mismatched...
Same thing happens with me too..renaming the cwm backup file leads to the same mds mismatch error but sometimes it works..strange eh??
That never happens for me...

Well I am an experienced hacker so ill explain. I do not have a brief knowleage about md5 but the md5 is calculated by the alphablet that it has lets say the name is ABHY then the md5 will be 1670 (This is an expamle) the other name is ZXDR the md5 will be 7304 now if you change the name the md5 does not change hence the error arises

yeah i know that, but i thought that he makes MD5 checksum of backup files, one by one, and not the whole folder...

It looks like this is the case, I havejust spent the last hour trying to "repair" the Md5 checksums as described above only to find there was no problem with them, the problem was i had renamed the backup file. on checking in details when the file was created i renamed the file accordingly and voila the backup worked. I have renamed many backup files before and never had this problem but i did this time strange.
Informative post...
but MD5 checksum verification is useful...
I got md5 checksum error and it was caused by space in renamed folder name. After i remove space, restore worked.
I think I understand the principle of an MD5sum (check file for errors / corruptions), and that in a nandroid backup, the md5sum is based off the name of the backup. So that brings me to two questions:
1. How does one check an md5sum? (btw I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a macbook pro)
Look Here
2. Is there any way I can change the md5sum of a nandroid backup so that I can rename it to something I'll recognize? (Like stock ROM or SC5_V1 with the date) Is there anything special I need to do to change the name of a nandorid backup?
No
I've attempted to scour the internet for my answers, but have been unsuccessful =/
Thanks in advanced.
Md5 is based on the contents of the files. If one bit of data is different the resulting md5 will be different. It is not based on the filename. Android market has many md5 apps you could use

+1 to this. md5sums are very useful when you download big files to make sure that it didn't get corrupted in the download.
Look here on how to easily get the md5sum of a file on a mac.

Therefore changing the name of a nandorid backup shouldn't change the MD5sum right? So I should therefore be able to change the names to whatever I want right?

Correct. You can also use ROM Manager to automatically backup/restore/flash and you have to option to name it whatever you want.

Hmm I will have to experiment some then...
what is MD5. and how to i make it match
Md5 is the download number to ensure that the file was downloaded properly. You check md5 sum by using a file manager and checking the properties of the file. You can also check it in recovery mode (at least in 4ext)
Usually the download website (mainly ROMs) has the md5 sum, so you can write down your md5 sum and check it with the one on the website.
Sent from my HTC Sensation
And you don't 'make it match'. You check to see if it already matches. If it doesn't match, delete the file and redownload it.

This. If it doesn't match it means that the file you downloaded does not match the original in some way. The file was either corrupted during download or you got a copy that somebody messed with, possibly for malicious reasons.

It's not a "location". Just go to file manager and view properties of the file. There should be an option to check md5 sum. Then check it on the website wherever you downloaded the file from

I didnt understand it either but SkipJacks explained it nicely to me so here is what he put :
Boot into your current rom.
Install any file explorer. ES File explorer is a great option from the Play Store.
Use ES File Explorer to check the MD5 sum.
Open ES File Explorer. Find the file (probably in your Downloads folder or whatever fold the app you used to download the file puts things in)
Long press the file. Little boxes will show up to the right.
Click MORE at the bottom of the screen. (Might be at the top. I'm looking at this on my tablet. It might be different on the phone version)
Then click PROPERTIES on the pop up menu
Then SHOW CHECKSUM
Select the MD5 checkbox.
Click CALCULATE
A long code shoudl show up under MD5 on that screen.
If the Md5 matches exactly with the file you have downloaded then flash the file.

One thing I would change. When I was talking to you we were talking about firmware specifically, so I added that the file you needed to check would be called pm58img.
But md5 sums can be calculated on any file. It doesn't just apply to firmware.
