Md5 is the download number to ensure that the file was downloaded properly. You check md5 sum by using a file manager and checking the properties of the file. You can also check it in recovery mode (at least in 4ext)
Usually the download website (mainly ROMs) has the md5 sum, so you can write down your md5 sum and check it with the one on the website.

And you don't 'make it match'. You check to see if it already matches. If it doesn't match, delete the file and redownload it.

This. If it doesn't match it means that the file you downloaded does not match the original in some way. The file was either corrupted during download or you got a copy that somebody messed with, possibly for malicious reasons.

Meaning if it doesn't match, don't flash!

do you know the MD5 file is located and what its ment to be
It's not a "location". Just go to file manager and view properties of the file. There should be an option to check md5 sum. Then check it on the website wherever you downloaded the file from

I didnt understand it either but SkipJacks explained it nicely to me so here is what he put :
Boot into your current rom.
Install any file explorer. ES File explorer is a great option from the Play Store.
Use ES File Explorer to check the MD5 sum.

One thing I would change. When I was talking to you we were talking about firmware specifically, so I added that the file you needed to check would be called pm58img.
But md5 sums can be calculated on any file. It doesn't just apply to firmware.

I see this everywhere, but what exactly is it and what does it mean? I rooted, flash cm7 rc2, flash back to stock Rom then re-flashed AR 4.0 b3.1 all without checking md5... Any negative effects to that? Also I am running stock kernel and whatever radio was pushed to my phone during the one click rooting process...

It's basically a file fringerprint. Verifies file intergrity.

Whichever file you download. If you downloaded the ROM, and want to check the ROM's MD5, open astro, long press the ROM, and check MD5.
If it's a radio you want to check, long press the radio file in Astro and check MD5
I actually didn't know Astro would do this. I found a free program for my computer that will check MD5 sums. Put the file on the SD, tell the program where the file is, it gives me an MD5
I have been palying around with various Zoom configuration. As I get one close I do a nandroid backup with CWM Recovery. I would like to be able to rename them with discriptive names so that I can find a specific backup when needed. Every time I try I get an MD5 sum error.
Does anyone know how to rename a backup and fix the MD5 sum?

You will need a file manager, such as Astro or what I use, Super Manager. Your nandroid back ups will be under folder "external 1" , clockworkmod, backup.
It's all in the file manager
I use root explorer. One thing to remember is that you can't use certain characters. I don't know exactly what they are, but if you only use what are in the original as far as punctuation you should be all set.

Use a md5 checker and check the whole folder, find the md5 file and open a text editor and add the md5 you just got in place of the old one
And if you put any special characters in the name or spaces you will get a md5 sum error

the easiest way is use root explorer and stick to numbers and alphabet characters as much as possible. it will handle the md5 for you. just renaming the files with a file manager will ruin the backup.. DONT DO IT. I found out the hard way unfortunately.
As a test, I copied a CWM backup folder from my phone to my Windows PC. I renamed the folder without spaces or special characters and then copied the entire folder back to the phone. Upon restoring using CWM 5.0.2.7, it successfully passed md5 test and restored. I then rebooted with no problem.
I also compared the md5 sums in the nandroid.md5 files from the original folder (before renaming) and after renaming and they are identical.
The key is to avoid spaces or special characters; use underscore "_" instead of spaces in the folder_name.

md5 fail with space, if rename again it will re-work, data is NOT ruined if you rename

Successful verification of the md5 file shows that the files are the same as at the time of packing and "not corrupted".
Consider this,
You flash a ROM which did not have a correct md5 checksum.
It may mean that the ROM was corrupted due to some reason and you may end up with a bricked phone.
though the chances of this happening are pretty low with a backup.. but better safe than sorry.

Well yeah, MD5 is a great thing when it comes to checking consistency of a file, but for example, it bothers me because i have about 5-6 rom backups and they are all difrent roms, so i need to change the name of folder from date-time stamp to name of the rom, but when i do that i cant restore it any more because MD5 checksum apperantly checks the folders name also so i have to rename it again to date stamp... but sometimes it can be useful... just sayin'
I don't think cwm checks the backup names. I've got a couple of backups renamed to the ROM names and they work well.
well i dont know then, when i change their name back to the time stamp like 2012-03-15 11.12.32 then the restore will work, but when i leave a name like CM 7.2 rc5.5, when i chose restore, it prints out md5 checksum mismatched...
Same thing happens with me too..renaming the cwm backup file leads to the same mds mismatch error but sometimes it works..strange eh??

Well I am an experienced hacker so ill explain. I do not have a brief knowleage about md5 but the md5 is calculated by the alphablet that it has lets say the name is ABHY then the md5 will be 1670 (This is an expamle) the other name is ZXDR the md5 will be 7304 now if you change the name the md5 does not change hence the error arises

It looks like this is the case, I havejust spent the last hour trying to "repair" the Md5 checksums as described above only to find there was no problem with them, the problem was i had renamed the backup file. on checking in details when the file was created i renamed the file accordingly and voila the backup worked. I have renamed many backup files before and never had this problem but i did this time strange.

I got md5 checksum error and it was caused by space in renamed folder name. After i remove space, restore worked.
I think I understand the principle of an MD5sum (check file for errors / corruptions), and that in a nandroid backup, the md5sum is based off the name of the backup. So that brings me to two questions:
1. How does one check an md5sum? (btw I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a macbook pro)

Md5 is based on the contents of the files. If one bit of data is different the resulting md5 will be different. It is not based on the filename. Android market has many md5 apps you could use

+1 to this. md5sums are very useful when you download big files to make sure that it didn't get corrupted in the download.
Look here on how to easily get the md5sum of a file on a mac.

Correct. You can also use ROM Manager to automatically backup/restore/flash and you have to option to name it whatever you want.

Hmm I will have to experiment some then...
Converted my 7pro to international from tmobile some time ago. Bootlader and sim unlocked, rooted, have custom kernel, and working on 9.5.7.. I want upgrade to 9.5.8, downloaded full zip multiple times for GM21AA, md5 checked, everything works.. Moved downloaded ZIP file to root folder (internal memory), but i can't see the update under settings > system > system updates > settings > local upgrade..
restarted, cleared cache.. etc.. tried all possible ways. Even oxygen updater app sees that there is an update zip in place. But what the hell happening in local upgrade section, am i missing a step here?

Did you put the full zip file on the root of your internal storage? Meaning it has to be on /sdcard/ not /sdcard/downloads
Yes i did, its definitely on internal storage (root)
Also I notice something similar when I download a full zip and it was that after .zip it also had .jar so it looked like this( ? Name.zip.jar ) so I rename it and deleted jar and I was able to see under local update

It definitely has no extension other than zip

My best guess is to check the md5 hash of that zip and see if it matches the one on the OP website. If it doesn't match, you have a bad download. Also, can you open the zip with a file manager or does it TELL you it's corrupt? In any case, I'd say redownload the zip.

Thats the interesting part. Md5 is matching, and yes i can see the contents of zip file when i tap it. I downloaded 5 times already

Yeah that IS weird, never seen that before.... So when all else fails, I'd use fastboot to boot TWRP and then install the zip that way. Is your bootloader unlocked? Use the command "fastboot boot [file name].img" then flash it there, if you're gonna install the TWRP zip to have it permanently, remember to install Magisk as well, it's needed for the phone to boot in that case.
Did you ever find a solution to this? I am having the same issue. .zip file is downloaded, not corrupt and in the root folder, but "system update / local upgrade" doesn't see it.
Some file explorers doesn't show the extension. It may be the case that your file is named "name.zip.jar", but when your looking at it, .jar is dropped, showing only "name.zip". This makes you believe .zip is the extension, while it's not, rather just part of the filename.
