Nexus S + at&t prepaid - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, just had a quick question.
Is anyone currently, or previously, gotten the Nexus S successfully working on at&t's $50 unlimited everything plan? Data doesn't seem to work and I've tried a couple APNs. So, has anyone had success with this?
Thanks!

If they at&t catch you IMEI as a smartphone and a data hog they will cancel you if you don't get a data plan.

Why? Sounds like unlimited everything should include a data plan.

Not to be off topic, but AT&T is like that. If they realize you have an Android Smartphone, I am sure they will try to add other 'data' charges. Simple Mobile would be the way to go for Prepaid. It's $40 a month unlimited everything. And data should work out of the sim card box.

BB Unlimited Data Plan to Captivate? Still unlimited?

Ahh, nice to be back on XDA... I was a former poster when I used to own the HTC Tilt and the older version of it, then I switch to Blackberry Bold. And now switching to Android and what better way to look for info about rooting but right here on XDA. Well to my question, I get different responses from ATT reps saying I can grandfather the unlim. and some says it has to be from BB to BB for it to be grandfathered. Question is which one is true? Really want this phone and would very much like to keep the unlim. data.

Trust me you will be able to keep you unlimited data plan. In the system when they upgrade you they have the option to select unlimited PDA plan. Just make sure they keep it for you.
Anytime you go from Smartphone to smartphone with AT&T you still will be able to keep your unlimited data plan.
Would it still be grandfathered if you bought it off contract?
I just sold my bold 9700 and this will be my first android phone. I called in to the att rep to unregister my blackberry pin from the bis service and was told I should be grandfathered because I'm going from one unlimited data to another unlimited data. I will be also buying this at full price.

What did they say? Did they let you?
You will be fine. I have switched my unlimited data from iPhone to Blackberry to nothing and back various times and have not had any problems doing so. I am lucky to have been grandfathered in. 200mb just seems like a limit and I do not like it.
just make absolutely certain and have the rep read your plan back to you after the swap to make sure he swapped ur bb unlimited to a reg unlimited.
Thanks guys. I'll update you once I made the switch.
I read somewhere a person may NOT be grandfathered in if they purchase from other than AT&T. Anyone know if that is true?

This is not true because either way you have the option to simply renew your current plan with AT&T (if you purchase a phone elsewhere) and then change your data plan to android (which will be unlimited assuming you are grandfathered in).
Now if you mean purchasing the phone from lets say Radio Shack under an AT&T contract you will still get the same benefits if you purchased from an AT&T store.
I checked multiple AT&T store today and spoke with the manager(s). Yes, if you have been grandfathered into unlimited data, this carries over to ANY future cell phone as long as you stay with AT&T. Samsung Captivate included.
They said that you would have the option of downgrading to a 2gb max WITH tethering (they weren't sure if the captivate supported it yet but obviously the iphone does). This isn't an issue though because the damn thing will be rooted and I'll tether with it without their knowledge.

They said they going to leave my blackberry data plan on there until I make the switch. When I actually have the phone in my hands I just give them a call to switch over to another unlimited data plan.

Not true, as long as they remain your carrier, they don't care where your phone came from.
I'm also coming from the tilt, then fuze, then had a bb 9700 for awhile, and now getting the captivate I am in iraq though and my service has been suspended, they just re-did all my stuff over the phone and I told the lady I had an unlimited plan for itnernet, and she read it back as unlimited to me. If I hit limits (I tether my phones ALOT usually) then I will call and demand it be fixed, or ATT loses my contract for breaching it.

keep in mind that the att unlimited is still capped at 5 gigs even though its name implies otherwise. still, u should be fine.

i rescind my comment. I've done further research into the matter and lots of controversy surrounds ATT & their 5 gb limit. I won't open that can of worms here. Just be careful, if u go over 5 gb and tether w/o a tether plan. bad things may or may not happen.

agreed im pretty show my bill says more then that, plus the dude at att said i came keep my unlimited plan and he'll put the unlimited plan on the other phone line . it just who you talk to
note he was the manager , first time i meet the dude...
When I got my iP4 coming from a BB, i was able to keep my unlimited, now that im prolly going to be returning the iP4 i hope they should be able to keep my UNL.

No matter if it's off contract of not you will still be able to keep your unlimited data plan. Trust me on that ;-)
Even if the phone is purchased from a another AT&T retailer you will be fine.
Also there is no cap the unlimited data plan.

Contract Dilemma.

Okay, so I just recently switched to Att, coming from T-Mobile. For T-mobile, I had a regular Family plan minutes and unlimited texting, so NO data plan. I've always used smart phones without being charged or being forced upon a data plan. Which is why i miss it.
But I heard that for att, if you dont hava a data plan you must use your phone, else they'll force the data plan on you. Is there anyway around it? Like for me to use an android or windows 7 phone without being forced the data plan.
You will need an non at&t branded phone in order to get around the data plan requirement for smartphones in at&t.
Your old tmobile phone will likely work on at&t if you don't care about data speeds.

[Service Q] T-Mobile.

I'm currently AT&T Prepaid (25$ plan) and was browsing through the T-Mobile Prepaid plans and came across the 30$ Unlimited Web/Text plan, and I was wondering if the "web" part would be considered like a data type thing, like would I be able to browse the market, download apps, etc. on my phone, or what? They don't really specify it on the website or maybe I just haven't seen it or something. If any of you T-Mobile users out there could clear this up for my I'd be grateful.
Peace out with the grease out,
Malicious
No one?
Yes.. data is "web"
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/data-plans.jsp?fbid=MwipHpA42XK
Thanks >
Remember, except for the Skyrocket (if you flash a Tmo radio), no AT&T phone can get 3G on T-Mo.
(Maybe the new Note can too)
Oh I didn't know that
Well since "web" is data. If i upgraded my GoPhone account to the 50$ Unlimited plan would I be able to Browse the market, download apps and all that other good stuff? or would I have to purchase the extra 25$ 500mb data package?

If it's unlimited data, then no. That would be covered. Just the 50. I don't know how they work, but if it's unlimited data, then no, you would not need to pay more money for a service you are already offering.
Impressive btw, you got the almighty Entropy to answer.. Those are posts I make sure that I read very thoroughly a couple of times to make sure that I grasp all their knowledge.

Alright thanks for the responses
+1
Note: After re reading everything on the AT&T Website for the $50 plan its Unlimited everything, it says Unlimited data/mobile web browsing. but then it also states Smartphone users must purchase a data package plan to use Data services. so I guess its the Data/Mobile Web Browsing part that confused me.

hehe my bad had thought I clicked it. Okay upon my testing I had changed my GoPhone plan to the $50 Dollar unlimited plan, tweaked around the APN settings and bam I now have Unlimited data services. I am able to download apps from the market and everything. And also talk and text are unlimited. So thats not a bad investment for only 50 bucks a month. Just letting everyone know
Moderators can lock this thread now if need be
Note: My phone died so I charged/rebooted it and as of since I am unable to regain any data services. :/ Just a warning it might be a temporary thing or it might be permanent. I'm investigating it!
Note2: I got data working again by deleting and re entering the APN settings then threw it into flight mode for 10 seconds and data worked perfectly again!

[Q] Unlimited Iphone Data Plan and Samsung S2 Skyrocket Options

Hello Just a quick question or two. Right now I have an Iphone 4 and am eligible for an upgrade. I decided on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. However do any of you know if an iPhone data plan will work with a non-iphone smartphone? I'm really trying to keep my iphone plan for the sake of being able to switch my microsim between the iphone and the Samsung (If all works out I want to keep my microsim instead of a new one. I'll just use an adapter with the Samsung)
I've read that a non-iphone smartphone can work under an iphone data plan but an iphone can't work under a regular smartphone plan. Which is why I'm trying hard to keep the plan I have now. I just want to know if that is fact or false.
Any information will be really helpful. I asked this on the at&t forum but haven't gotten any replies. I hope you guys can help Please and thank you
EDIT: sorry. I meant to post this in the Q&A forum. Is it okay to post this here?

You can keep your plan, As i just upgraded from an Iphone 4 myself, however you will not be able to switch sims as easily, You must get a new sim for the LTE service from ATT for the skyrocket. I kept my same plan with unlimited data now provisioned for LTE and whatnot is all.
So your plan will have to be adapted, You can get a cookie cutter for your sim and then it should work in an iphone never tried it though....and the adapter would have to go in the skyrocket.
Hope this helps, PS don't let them change your plan they will ask you too but say no.
the quick answer is no, although you will be able to retain the "unlimited" status of the plan, they are two different codes on your account. so you can use the phone and text but no data or pic/vid messages unless you change the data plan.
Thanks for the info

Thanks for answering. How happy are you with the Skyrocket now that you've upgraded from the iPhone?
I came from iPhone as well. My grandfathered iPhone $30 unlimited plan carried over to my skyrocket. Still had to get a new Sim card though. Make sure they keep your grandfathered plan, I heard some people got ripped off on theirs. You can keep it so make sure you specify that.

This is what my bill says now:
Unlim data for 4G LTE Smartphones w/Visual Voice Mail 02/12-03/11 30.00
But it was previously the Iphone unlimited data plan.
Also important to mention that I'd you have unlimited you will now be throttled at 5 gbs instead of 3 like iPhone users

When I upgraded from my iPhone 3GS to the Skyrocket the guy at the store asked me if I wanted to switch from my unlimited data plan. I told him no, I'd rather take the throttle than the overage charges any day. Now my bill shows this feature instead of the iPhone data plan: LTE UNL SMT VVMT. I was also surprised that I wasn't asked to verify my employment status with Wal Mart, I haven't worked there in 4 years, but i still get the 20% discount off my bill every month.

how can i keep this phone without a plan

What's up guys. NOOB HERE. Cut me some slack. I currently own a iPhone 4s on att. I just got a good deal on a rooted Skyrocket.
This is the problem. I don't have a iPhone data plan. I just use the phone and wifi.
So I bought a sim card adapter, and I placed the sim card into the skyrocket.
Soon as I do that, att changes my phone plan, and adds a 4g Lte plan. Is there anyway around this?

When they identify your phone as a smartphone, they don't do it through the data you send them, they don't through your imei number which is broadcast to att via your sim. So an app or rom won't do you any good. I can't speak for att, but tmobile has a similar policy with all smartphones requiring data but i have used a Nokia n8 on their network for 2 years without anyone tacking on a data plan.

I'm on at&t prepaid $2/day without data - so far. I bought a data package before they changed their policy to monthly only for smartphones plus data package. I don't talk/text every day, so $2/day seemed worth trying. When they switched policies, I just did not buy a data package and as far as I know, I don't have at&t data access. But I have been able to use my phone for calls. Don't know what will happen when my $100 runs out, but that will probably be several months from now. Meantime I have a mobile hotspot I can use if out and about and think it necessary to check emails.
