[Q] Help with EKEN T01a - General Questions and Answers

I recently purchased an EKEN T01a and i can't get the thing to respond. While i was installing apps i tried to change the dpi settings from 120 to 150 and now the pop up message i receive on the screen says "Unfortunately, the launcher has stopped". I tried looking for firmware on the net to do a wipe but i have found nothing. If anyone can help i would appreciate it thanks.

EKEN T01A Stock ICS Firmware 4.0.3 (v0.8.1 - 2012-02-24)
Finally found, after a long ride : I attach the necessary software and instruction found over the net to flash it. In the firmware file there are further instructions and links, but this is the correct procedure from futeko dot com
Firmware details:
File Name: sun4i_crane_t01a_0.8.1_20120224.rar
Type: Firmware
Manufacturer: Eken
Tablet Name: sun4i_crane_t01a_0.8.1_20120224
Model Number: T01A T01
CPU Name & Model: Allwinner A10
Firmware Date: 2012-02-24
OS Name: ICS
OS Version Number: 4.0.3
Firmware Type: Stock
Flashing Instructions:
Q: How to flash firmware (also known as a 'ROM') on the Eken T01 and T10 (and T01A)?
A: This is a fiddly process so some perseverance might be required. It will work in the end. From user reports it seems to work most smoothly on the 32bit version of Windows XP. Instructions:
- Firmware must be flashed using a Windows application called Livesuit. Download it from the link below.
- Once downloaded, and before attaching your tablet to your PC, run the file 'LiveSuitPack_version_1.09_20111101.exe' from within the Livesuit folder. This should install a new device on your system (VID_1f3a_PID_efe8). This device may show with an exclamation mark in Windows Device Manager, this doesn't matter and can be ignored.
- Now download the firmware image you want to install. Firmwares are linked to in the downloads section to the left. After decompressing the archive you will end up with a .img file (e.g. 'sun4i_crane_t01a_0.8.1_20120224.img'). This is the firmware/ROM image that you are going to flash (or copy) to the tablet.
- Without attaching your tablet to your PC run 'LiveSuit.exe' from within the Livesuit folder. You should get an application with 6 icons.
- You will be asked if you want to be guided through the process, select no.
- Click on the leftmost icon (a cube), browse to your downloaded firmware image, and select it.
- Now attach your tablet to your PC by USB cable whilst holding down the volume+ button on the top. Straight after attaching the cable, and whilst still holding down the volume+ button, start pressing the tablet power button repeatedly. This (slightly frenzied) procedure puts the tablet into update mode.
- After a few seconds you will be asked if you want to perform a forced firmware update. Select yes. You will be asked if you're sure. Select yes.
- The update will start. You can release volume+ at this point.
- The update should take approx 3 minutes to complete. You will see a % complete progress bar during the process and will get a dialog saying OK when it's done.
- Turn your tablet on and you will have the new firmware.

ROOT Instructions & Script (windows):
PELASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEED!!!
DOWNLOAD: Mediafire.com - BalTac-EKEN-RootScript
Instructions and script are fully based on the work of MrTasselhof for Ainol Novo 7 Advanced, from slatedroid forum. My only work was to adapt (I've deleted the uneeded part of the code from the .BAT file) and test the script for EKEN T01a Tablet. Maybe it just work even for other eken devices. Please feedback.
MrTasselhof said:
This is a straightforward script.
It's sole purpose is to get your device rooted and provide the tools to verify it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**IMPORTANT PRE-CHECK LIST**
Connect your tablet using the OTG port (normal procedure)
- YOU MUST USE THE INCLUDED USB CABLE
Make sure USB Debugging is ENABLED
- Settings --> Applications --> Development --> USB debugging (Green Checkmark)
Make sure to check Device Manager to ensure that there aren't any devices with a yellow exclamation mark.(WARNING: the eken tablet HAVE one of the drivers with an exclamation mark: please, just ignore it )
- Right Click on My Computer --> Manage Device --> Device Manager
Here is a link to a driver package I created... (I didn't need to use them. Drivers suited with LiveSuitPack are enough, but just in case...)
- Download Link: Mediafire.com - Android USB Multiple Driver Pack
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions:
Extract the folder to ANY location you wish. (it is self contained)
Run !RUN-ME-BalTac-RootScript.bat
You will be given the following prompt:
Make sure to enable USB Debugging on the tablet
- Settings -) Applications -) Development -) USB debugging (green checkmark)
'
1. Check Tablet Connection
2. Verify Tablet is ROOT Capable (with this script)
3. Run ROOT Script
'
4. Quit
'
Choose Option (1 thru 4):
Option 3 Performs the actual ROOT process.
- It also installs the following programs: (don't worry if they are already installed)
* Superuser
* Root Checker
* Root Explorer
* Busybox
Watch the magic happen
Enjoy!

EDIT.:Zero Size Internal Storage Problem and the step taken to fix it.
(source.:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29800946&postcount=78 )
Got the same problem. After reset, storage size become Zer0!. Fixed it by doing this:
1. Put a copy of term.apk into my memory card.
2. Run file manager and locate term.afk, run it to install.
3. Open terminal emulator and got nice prompt. Alas don't get the sharp prompt (#)
***ROAD BLOCK*** Need to root the tablet first.
4. Grab Tesselhof script (Tasselhof - Root, Market, Build.Prop, & Tweaks Script - AllWinner A10)
5. Install PdaNetA350.exe just to be sure that the tablet connect....
6. Run Tesselhof. Da*n, did not work 100%. Continue with option 2,3,4,5 in Tesselhof. Reboot the tablet.
7. Rerun Tesselhof. Option 2,3,4,5 again! Success!!
8. Reinstall term.afk and running it...
9. Execute the god command "su" !! Yes.... got the sharp prompt! Hehe (#)
10. Typing this one liner to fix Zero size storage
cp /system/xbin/busybox /system/bin
Pressing enter and rebooting the tablet.
FIXED!!

Maybe you are using the wrong firmware. this one is intended for EKEN MID T01A 7". Yours is the 10" tablet EKEN MID T10. But don't worry: There is a link that you can find in the guide that come with the previous firmware. Is an eken FTP space where are stored the latest firmware for T01A, T02A and T10A (and I suppose they are even compatible for T01, T02 and T10). Let's have a try. If this one won't work I'll try to find the specific T10 firm.

Hello, just wondering if the 7" you mentioned firmware for in this post is the same as the MID-T01a available at geeks.com, amazon, ect
Here is one picture. I just searched for MID-T01A and found this post.

Trying to figure out if there is any community/manufacturer support for this tablet, and if it is worth purchasing.

I think that Is the same device, but for now I haven't find any community that give an exaustive support to the tablet. There is something compatible in communities that develop for Ainol tablets, like slatedroid forum (some app and scripts. but don't use Ainol custom firmwares: they aren't compatible and will brick your device!!!). If you only need to ROOT that tablet you can try this using only the first 3 options (others might cause the tablet stop working or give some error):
Tasselhof ROOT script
If this external link is not allowed, I ask the moderators to warn me and I will report here the entire guide and the necessary files.

Hi,
Would you happen to be able to find T02's firmware? Eken's official FTP is extremely slow and impossible to download from.

I've found this one (I can't try it so I'm not sure if it's a true T02 Fw): EKEN T02 Firmware 2012/04/07 - DOWNLOAD
But the download manager say to me that is an FTP transaction and the download is extremely slow (ETA: about 2 hours). If you want I can download it and reup in my mediafire account.

Always "Update failed"
I've tried all the different UPDATE.APP versions. And every one of them starts to unpack, and then, just as it's about to start installing,
I get a yellow warning triangle and an "Update failed" message.
Anyone experienced the same or know what to do with this?
I'd like to root the current 2.3.6 or upgrade to ICS or something, but everything just fails
The phone is totally stock from manufacturer, I haven't flashed or done anything.

Chinese Note II clone problem (Star S7100 - MTK6577)

Hi,
I have just bought a chinese Note II clone.
Code:
www dot cellphonemic dot com/mtk6577-android-phones/s7100-mtk6577
The phone seems to be unable to handle SIM properly. On every start I get the error message:
com.android.phone stopped
Click to collapse
SIM Toolkit is also unable to start. When I start or receive a call, the display goes blank or just flashes up for a moment. (This problem is resolved already, see here)
I was told it is most likely a firmware error. On searching, I didn't find this model or similar in the forum. I also tried several rooting methods described here without success.
Here are some details I could get from the phone:
Code:

I asked the chinese merchant I bought the phone from but he seems quite uncertain, although he promised to send a new ROM.
Can anybody help? Thanks in advance
Unfortunately is often quite difficult to get support for those Chinese clone devices. I hope you'll find someone that can help you but I think your best bet is to ask the seller for a replacement.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
At least I could root. Then I could try some custom ROM at my own risk.

It was never in my mind. This is why I posted here. But the question is still academic, since firmware update requires rooting (as far as I know) and I am unable even to root.
Proximity sensor
The problem of blank/flashing screen during calls has been resolved. The proximity sensor needed a proper calibration. I did the calibration many times so far, but not the correct way. I have just figured out how it should be done effectively.
pls teach me.

It is actually a simple process. Locate your proximity sensor, it is a small LED-like thing next to the speaker, on either side. Look for calibration of proximity sensor, you can find it usually amongst the display options. Tap on it, target-like concentric circles appear and the application asks you to place some obstacles over the sensors. The easiest way is to hold your palm above the sensor approx. 5 cm (2 inches) apart. Touch the Start button, and then try to complete the process with your hand motionless. The whole process takes a few seconds. If you did everything right, during a call, holding the phone to your ear the screen goes blank, and the phone application re-appears when moving the phone away.

Hi,
thanks for the response. How is your ROM working? Is it fully functioning, rooted or not etc.
How should it be installed? From SD card or by flashing application?
Send it anyway, having itself doesn't do any matter.
Thanks in advance
I have the exact same phone as you but mine seems to be working fine. I've tried to root it and there is no way I can find to root it. Especially since my boot menu is in Chinese! I would give you my ROM if I knew how.
I guess buyers should run the risk when buying clone phone. Asking replacement seems to be the answer.

You may try to flash the original factory ROM via Flash Tool, if your phone still can be recognized.
Btw. root access can be gained by replacing the Chinese recovery with CWM recovery, then installing SU from CWM recovery.
Successfully rooted
I have just successfully rooted my phone. The process was as follows:
I replaced the Chinese factory recovery mode with CWM recovery via Flash Tool.
Started the phone with CWM recovery and installed a superuser package from it.
If anybody interested, I can provide links to files needed along with description of the process.
Hi just joined this group
Can you post how you rooted the S7100 please
Been trying all day with Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18
but phone will not root that way
Thanks Jigsey

Tell me the info please, I have been trying to root mine for days
Flashing CWM Recovery and install root
Download CWM_and_root_flash.rar from here.
Unpack the archive with its folder structure to a path not containing any special characters.
Flashing CWM Recovery:
Turn off the phone without connected to the computer.
Take out the battery and insert it back after a few seconds.
(If the driver is already installed, continue with step 5) Connect the phone to the computer with USB cable. The operating system will detect a new device - direct the wizard to the folder containing the driver (for your version of OS)
[*]When driver is installed, disconnect the cable from the computer.
Run the program SP Flash Tool.

}
Push the button Scatter-loading and select the file MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt (it is in the folder CWM Recovery).
IMPORTANT! Make sure, only RECOVERY is selected in the image list, otherwise the phone could stop working!
Push the button Download.
Connect the phone to the computer. The program should recognize it and start flashing.
If the phone is not detected, then unplug it from the computer, remove and insert the battery and re-connect to the computer.
Also the new hardware wizard may pop up again - just let it install the driver automatically.
When flashing is complete, disconnect the phone.
Boot the phone normally to check everything works properly.
Installing root (Superuser):
Save MT6577 blk0p3 Root by CWM-SuperSU 0.99 angelobiz.zip on SD card (internal SD card is preferred).
Turn off the phone and reboot it in recovery mode by keeping pressed Volume+ and Power buttons simultaneously.
You enter CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2 you have just flashed. (Navigate with V+/- and choose with PWR)
Choose "install zip from sdcard" from the main menu.
Either select "choose zip from sdcard" from the next menu if you saved the zip on the external SD card
or select "choose zip from internal sdcard" if you saved the zip on the internal SD card.
Navigate to the zip and press the Power button. When the installation process is complete, reboot the phone normally.
Superuser application is now installed and you can check the root status with a root checker application.

Cabletech Android Dongle URZ0193 [TCC8925] aka Plute iSMRTV

As an introduction, I ended up with this stick with no markings on inside or outside of casing, didn't even know the vendor. The build that was on the device when I first got it didn't even have the Google Play Store. This lead me to a (somewhat lengthy) look into this model. After a lot of fiddling, trawling and eventually playing, I wanted to bundle up everything I can on this stick as what I do know about it is spread wide and thin.

That's all I have for now. AFAIK there isn't a custom ROM available for this device as yet. Wouldn't mind getting into it myself.
Thanks
Work like a charm
Waiting for a custom ROM
Is it complicated to make a custom rom for this device ? How can I get source to start playing ?
Well here is the drama that was the other night. The firmware they have supplied doesn't flash, at least not onto my device. Tried it from a few different memory sticks and even from internal memory. Tried flashing the update.zip via ADB, no dice. Tried recovering it via ADB. I can get to the bootloader for fastboot, but for the life of me I can't get this firmware to flash.
The problem with the current firmware is that it doesn't allow you to log in with a Google account and therefore the Play Store doesn't work. Killing me. I don't know where to start as far as building firmware for this that I can flash either with the built in function or over ADB and I don't want to risk flashing the CX-01 custom firmware from the Pandawill forum in case I completely brick it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I also have such a stick from Cabletech. Thanks a lot for the update link, I'll try it. What kind of power supply are you using?
I installed the new firmware, it looks that it is very good, the experience is very smooth. There is however a drawback, the Play Store is not working, it seems that everything connected to a google account is not working (Play Store, login to youtube). I suspect that the necessary applications are not installed since I don't have the option to add a google account.
I'll try to install the Google Apps from CM9.

Possibly you might use this firmware (check if your hardware is the same):
http://tabletrepublic.com/forum/cx-01/cx-01-specs-info-tweaks-2516.html
Hello,
thanks for the great information provided. i was able to do this, that you provided us with and much more but i ran into some issues (issues triggered by myself) and now i have to fix the android image. therefore i have a few questions:
do you have an image (done with dd [linux] or [win32diskimager]) of the internal sd card?
do you have any idea how to boot the device in recovery
do you know a method of installing self-made update.zip's?
the dongle is very much the same with cx-01 but the only thing missing is the button which would allow us to boot the device into recovery mode and flash *.rom files.

thanks for the great information provided. i was able to do this, that you provided us with and much more but i ran into some issues (issues triggered by myself) and now i have to fix the android image. therefore i have a few questions:
do you have an image (done with dd [linux] or [win32diskimager]) of the internal sd card?
do you have any idea how to boot the device in recovery
do you know a method of installing self-made update.zip's?
the dongle is very much the same with cx-01 but the only thing missing is the button which would allow us to boot the device into recovery mode and flash *.rom files.

Click to collapse
Unfortunately I don't have anything. I ended up trying to flash a ROM I found online, bricked the stick. I can still access via ADB, but need an image to flash and I don't have that. Haven't even looked at the stick since then.
If anyone has an image that can be flashed via ADB, please let us know.
That sucks... i have a working stick but no stock image to share. If you need it i can make a full sd card image (with dd) and share it. This would bring your stick to the factory settings + version 04 of the modds that float around for the cx-01. I had no time to look at the schematics and fit the stick with a button so now this is the only solution availabke.
Firmware Update
I have contacted with the vendor and have received following URL for Calbletech URZ0193 firmware update:
www dot lechpol dot eu slash model slash urz0193 slash - sorry fort unconvenience, but I can't put external links directly. So try remove spaces from the URL and replace "slash" and "dot" words with the characters .
represented by them.
Try it, I just received the mail with the update URL few minutes ago and I do not have any experiences with that update file.
Best regards
Can someone give any mirrot to update 1.1 if im opening lechpol page i need login and pass

This is a good budget device when compared to other devices from lead manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG or Huawei.
While searching on the internet I did find some Root & CWM installation methods.
I will be updating the relevant posts as and when needed.
You can look in the list below for what you want to do with your device.
ATTENTION!!! READ THIS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friend, there are two versions of this device in the market:
1. A706 (Chinese model)
2. A706_ROW (International Model)
The ROMs in this thread are only for the A706ROW model of this phone unless otherwise stated.
If you have the chinese model or another model A760 (which is a different model) then the ROMs in this thread are not for you.
Model A706 and A760 are two different models with almost same specifications. This DOES NOT mean that the ROMs of A706ROW are compatible with A760.
Please DO NOT confuse Lenovo A706 with Lenovo A760 as these are two different devices!!! Flash or experiment at your own risk!!!!
If you share a ROM link for any of the above devices, then please mention clearly the device for which the ROM can be used.

FOR NOOBS
--------------------
Read the instructions (click on SHOW to read) before attempting anything from the list below!
First you need to have the Android SDK installed on your computer. Or atleast you need to have the adb & fastboot files available on your computer.
Here's a good post that tells you how to setup ADB and fastboot.
Here's a post that has a list of adb/shell commands for noobs.
Ok, once you are done with the setup of ADB & fastboot on your computer, then you can proceed with the below instructions.

IMPORTANT NOTE BEFORE FLASHING:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Recently, I have noticed that many people after buying the phone are flashing any firmware to their phones and most of the time without checking the phone versions and the OS versions. In the stock firmware post, I had mentioned that people having the Chinese version of the phone should NOT flash the ROW (international) firmware otherwise it would mess up their phone and network etc.
SOLUTION FOR SIM ERROR & DOWNGRADING TO CHINESE ROM

Now, some of the people have already done such a mistake and for those people (who are having SIM or network problems and want to go back to chinese ROM, I am sticking this post by danyno1 to the OP:

BEST soloutions for these 2 common problems :
#1 device doesnt recognize simcards
#2 being unable to downgrade to the chinees stock rom
soloution of the #1 problem :
how I fixed: Just Installed the QNeonModern 1.7 ROM... then I installed the update of a chinese ROM from bootdroid (I mean putt the update.qsb file un the sdfuse directory o my sd card, then power and vol+ to enter the menu and selected SD UPDATE)... thats all... I have again my chinese rom with signal for calls untill we discover how to make work the athk board in the ROW roms.

soloution for #2 problem:
Ok trying again to put my chinese device in ROW rom with sim signal, and found a solution:
1:Flash via droidboot a chinese stock firmware I used the 130325
2:Rooted device with vroot and installed CWM Recovery via ADB
3:In the procedure to install custom rom Qneon one of the steps is to flash boot.img via fastboot... well I just didn´t do this step and flashed directly Qneon_1.7.1.zip via CWM
4: Did data/factory reset, cache reset and dalvik cache reset
5:Reboot system
An Ready! Finally got my chinese device in spanish and sim signal.

scuderialoki, unfortunate that you got stuck. worked for me without any issues. i upped the same file that i used on mediafire. can you re-download the file and then check if the file is ok by extracting the zip using winrar or winzip? if it is ok then try flashing it again.

ok, please tell me if you have CWM installed on your device? I believe it is not installed. if this is the case, then you need to flash CWM and then try installing the zip again.
if it is installed then, i believe the super su from previous rooting maybe causing the problem. check on Playstore for a method to unroot your device. or google it. then you need to root again. hope this solves your problem.
thanks
Hi bro thanks for the reply i attached a screenshot of my root validation. I used an app to identify that. And by the way my recovery is installed. I the super su app is killing it

Mercury Pro - RCA Tablet BootLoop + No way to acess ADB to hard reset

Hi. I bought the Mercury Pro 7" prosumer tablet back in 2014. I installed a google account on it, forgot the password, beat the 10 opportunities, account (and RCA tablet) locked.
Soon after that, I tried to "hard reset" and "factory reset" this tablet, with all the things I found at the moment through forums, but everytime it came to restart, it will lock itself because I forgot my password and it will not allow me to enter nor my gmail account or any other password at all (no text dialogue).
A friend took it to some "expert android shop", but they never got to fix the small tablet (needless to say).
I remember the tablet came with Marshmallow (Android 6?).
It's 2021, and I thought to find the original ROM Image for this device. But tough luck, I haven't found one (from all the forums I've read, you either need to short-circuit or download a similar clone image for the processor and cross fingers so the wifi modem picks up the .img drivers).
In all and all, if anyone of you would be so kind to help me out with this 7+ year plead: I'd like to fix this tablet in 2021, please. Help me out.
The tablet can be switched on, but Loops itself in the "Mercury Pro" logo, after the dogs logo.
The tablet runs out of battery. I charge it up so that it can be turned "on" just 1 time and 1 time only, to access the Bootload menu by power + volume up.
The times I do this procedure, I wipe clean the dalvik cache, user cache, system cache, set the device to factory reset, and reboot after that.
Again, the 2 dog logo appears, but the tablet stops at the Mercury Pro logo in a loop.
Reset pinhole helps to enter the tablet's "hard reset" (power+volume up) boot menu. It reads:
Android Recovery v1.2
RCT6673W-V1MKC-Android6.0-v08-v1.15.0
- Reboot system now
- Reboot to bootloader
- Apply Update from ADB
- Apply update from SD card
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe Cache partition
- Backup user data
- Restore user data
- Root integrity check
- Mount / System
- view recovery logs
- Power off
(Supported API: 3)
In the remote case the so-called "android repair" shop installed a bad rom on this hardware, what are my chances to Factory reset - re-flash the original stock rom for this device?
The Screen works normally, this tablet doesn't have a hardware fail of any kind, it just loops-boot after the 2 dogs logo into "Mercury pro".
I've checked the tablet internally, there are no burnt connections or anything out of the ordinary. Hardware is intact.
Please help me.
Thanks.

Is this device also known as mercury tab 7?
@viktorrios
In the linguistic world of Android users, they often use the term "hard reset" for "factory reset", which means that the device is reset to the state it was in when it was launched. In official serious usage, there is no "hard reset" for Android devices.
Your issue is that phone is stucking at boot logo. That can't get fixed doing a "Factory Reset" or even by means of ADB and/or Fastboot. IMO you've to re-flash phone's Stock ROM what can be achieved if phone is accessible by means of ADB - what requires USB debugging got enabled on phone.

ok. this is one step forward.
Thank you for your reply.
I found this site, but it doesn't have the stock rom:
ROMs | RCA
Be careful download your stock rom from unverified/ unofficial websites. May contain malware
What makes me wonder is; I can access the fastboot menu, I can CLEARLY read the entire log, but the OS is not reached during boot (logo loop). What makes it possible that I have a corrupted library?
Also: If I could find the stock rom and flash it from an SD card: How possible is it from the fastboot menu?
For anyone else who is reading this thread, here's another site with ROMs:

I found an explanation of one of the errors:
I: no boot messages
I: Open /cache/recovery/comand fail error= no such file or directory locale is [(null)]
stage is []
fb0 reports (possibly inaccurate)
The Unable to open DRM node: No such file or directory issue seems to indicate that there is no DRM driver running on your device (or that it failed to initialize). DRM support is a prerequisite for using this tool, as you can see. Most platforms supported by cedrus should also have DRM support, so you probably need to enable it in your kernel config and/or in the board's device-tree file.
Closing since this is not an issue of the tool but a setup issue instead.
I think I need to upload the entire message Log, maybe someone could help. So far I already know the "driver" is not booting and there is no mount of the OS. Everything else is there, and ready to receive an image. It seems the tablet was so wiped off that it doesn't even have an OS.

And guess what?
All along the ROM version my tablet had (from the so -called-experts in Android store in my story) put the wrong ROM version.
So Amazon indicated it is: RCT6873W42KC the rom.
Googling, I found: https://naijarom.com/rca-rct6873w42m
And the site looks legit. The scatter file is there and everything matches 1 to 1 to the STOCK image.
This site also has links: https://androidmtk.com/download-rca-stock-rom-for-all-models
My question now:
Whenever I plug the USB cable in my computer, (even after installing the ADB drivers), it says that windows 10 cannot recognize the USB device.
I am ready to flash using the SP Flash tool and the ROM file, but I can't -for the love of me- make contact from the PC to the tablet.
Could anyone help me with some work around suggestions, please?
Also: Why can't I just drag-drop all scatter ROM image to the microSD and Boot from recovery using "Apply update from SDCard"?
Ok so far everything was going full sail until I hit this brick road: Apparently I need a better USB cable. I've tried 3 different USB cables, but the device becomes unstable on win10 (switches on and off, and the "connected USB" sound dingles every 10 seconds.
Please help.

Is the stock rom for your device?
And the reason you can't just apply update from SD card is that the scatter rom doesn't have Meta inf and updater script. So the recovery can't install that
Yes, I checked this is the CORRECT Stock Rom for the RCA 7" Tablet Mercury Pro
I've also installed the "legacy hardware drivers":

After you installed the drivers did you restart you Computer?
No, I didn't restart the computer. Let me do that.
I also tried the "newest" micro USB to USB cable I have...
I hope this works.
This is a driver problem. https://tehnotone.com/windows-10-mtk-vcom-usb-drivers-for-32-64-bit-drivers-installation-tutorial/ check this guide out. Don't use the drivers from the above site, just use the driver you instslled
