What's going on guys?
I've had a Xoom for over a month now and I love it....I use my Xperia Play to play emulators and muffin knights on it, and its a good time...
BUT still no wireless tethering! I try Barnacle, Open Garden, that Wifi Tether app...
always Verizon Hotspot error within 1 minute...
PLEASE, anyone on STOCK ROOTED 2.3.3 with Verizon service in USA....
what, just in GOD'S NAME, what do you DO to share your awesome unlimited 3G with a computer/tablet??
I love this forum and I appreciate in advance any help (detailed instructions please (there's so many options NAT/LAN/WAN/Channel/Phone model)) !!
Thank you
bump =(
im having internet problems at my university and being able to tether would really help
Unfortunatally the last time I checked, a stock Verison Xperia Play has no tethering capabilities except through the Verison Hotspot. To bypass that and to use barnacle (which I do) you have to at a minimum root the phone.
Hope this answers your question.

Okay, I AM rooted...Alej helped me unlock the bootloader and I rooted after...
I've tried to use barnacle dozens of times with no luck, it works for a minute and then verizon hotspot ERROR...
could you please help me with what exact settings to use to avoid getting caught by verizon? I get the error every. single. time. lol
Thanks so much in advance, I really appreciate it
I'm rooted on my xperia play and barnacle works perfectly for me

I have it working with mine. The only way to do it is to use the latest wireless tether for root users in adhoc mode. To do this, you will need to have your Xoom rooted so you can apply adhoc mode support to its wifi driver.
To summarize.
Install Adhoc support on Xoom
Download and install latest wireless tether for root users
set wireless tether to adhoc mode in settings
search for and connect to wifi hotspot on Xoom with no verizon errors!

I have an Evo4g i rooted with unrevoked a while ago back when i had 3.29. installed wifi tether for android and it worked great. so once 3.70 was released i wanted to chech it out... made the upgraded. super user was there titanium back up working fine along with adfree, dropcap.. and other root required apps. however android wifi tether was a no go.
I had no errors in the logs. on one version of wifi tether ithe pc saw the connection but could not connect. on another version it could connect but no internet access. messed around with access control. changed the channels. all that fun stuff to no avail. so i broke down and downloaded barnacle wifi tether from the market.
it works! however there are some devices that do not recognize the wifi signal, that did recognize the one from android wifi tether(when it worked).. from what i understand it should just work.. i've also been reading some things about custom roms and kernels that i may need.. but why should i need them on an evo that it worked on before ?
barnacle says it doesn't need a custom kernel to work and android does that seems to be the only difference, i can tell.. so since android wifi tether worked for every device i would rather have that than barnacle. help?
do i need an iptable enabled kernel ? what do i do?
Thanks for your time folks and please bare with a noob

tried that no go.. some say the one in the market doesn't work for them.. i tried all the versions on googles site > code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Able to wifi tether to apple devices, but no luck with laptops or android devices. " does support ad hoc network" What wifi tether programs are others using? Thanks
wifi tether works. i used it this past weekend for 2 days.
if youre already rooted, you can just use native tethering. just delete tethermanager from /system/app no need for barnacle of wifi tether for root.

What does this mean? I downloaded wifi tether and then uninstalled it, but would like to be able to tether my tablet when we are on vacation. I am rooted.
android has the ability to tether out of the box.
carriers disable that and charge like $20 extra if you wanna be able to tether.
if you use titanium backup and freeze tethermanager.apk (or whatever it is called) you get the ability to wifi tether again without messing with any other third party apps.
look for it in /system/app and once you freeze it delete it or whatever you want to do with it, go to settings > wireless and network > mobile ap. if tether manager is gone you are able to use this native mode already on your phone to tether all you like. i would steer clear of apps like pdanet and tether for root, as usage of these apps appears to be sent back to att by tethermanager.
Is the built in tethering part of AT&Ts "bloatware"? I may have deleted it using Titanium Backup.
Is there a way to get it back?
Thanks in advance.
Thx it worked for me . I installed busy box as root user , then installed titaniumbackup . i went to backup restore tab. Froze tether manager then uninstalled tether manager and it works flawlessly now . Thx forums
Samsung infuse 4G
Yes!
It's these kinds threads that make me want to buy you guys a beer! As a new android user, I know very little, but when I ignore the haters/trolls/ignorant people, and smart asses, I find gems like this. To think I almost paid for it because of the salesman insisting that tethering through AT&T was the ONLY way. Thanks a bunch to all you guys who give back.
Thanks! Worked like charm. AT&T go kick rocks!
Mobile AP warning message
I am running Infused 1.5 on my phone. So from what I am reading in several tethering threads, I am able to use the native app for tethering. When I use MobileAP, the original warning message is still there "A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required...."
Sorry if this is a noob question, but is this message not supposed to be there anymore? or did I do something wrong?
yes you should not be getting that message. check to see if tethermanager is still in /system/app.

I was just about to post a similar question Im also on infused 1.5 and just tried the tethering, the message your talking about is the one at the top of the screen that doesn't go away that says "Tethering/Mobile hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please ect...." the one I was getting before I installed. The infused 1.5 I would click on the mobile AP box to turn on the tethering and a message saying I didn't have the service would pop up and turn off the tethering but that doesn't happen anymore I also just checked my plan features and tethering does not show up. I remember reading one of the features of the infused 1.5 was tethering but I didn't know how it worked until I read this thread. Thank you guys
But if I'm running Infused, why woukd that file still exist?
So you think I would be ok ignoring the message?

And about the message, if its the one that is on the top of the screen and not the one that pops up when u turn on the tethering I would ignore it.

Yes, also called wifi tethering or mobile access point. You can enable this in wireless settings if you pay extra for a tethering plan or remove tether manager.

Okay wait, so just freezing tethermanager wont work. I'd have to uninstall it to tether? I'm running stock rooted btw
i still dont know what freezing means, but it doesnt sound very guaranteed. tethermanager is malicious at best so i just completely delete it, theres no advantage to keeping it around.
Was just wondering if anyone knew what if any repercussions there would be using the Wifi Hotspot and USB tether app from SVTP (from the Android Market) on a non-rooted Verizon GN. The app works great and was quick to setup but I am interested to know if I will be automatically popped into a Mobile Hotspot plan (which I do not have now) if I use it.
That being said would it make more sense to root my phone to circumvent these potential charges?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Verizon has recently adopted new changes in how it monitors for tethering and when unauthorized tethering is detected it redirects you to a verizon web page on how to order a tethering package. I have heard PDA net still works, you might want to check out Koush's tether app, reported to be undetectable.
I say either way root your phone, then load a custom rom many of them have work arounds for wifi tethering
Yes I am a newby. Yes I have searched and didn't really find what I was after.
I unlocked my phone a bit back and did the leaked IMM26. Since then Sprint has updated it again to 4.0.4. I now have an Asus Transformer Prime with ICS and would like to use WiFi or BT tether on my NS4G. Is there a way to do it without going the route of loading up a custom ROM?
Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
Cheers

I have tried wifi teather. The tether function itself works beautifully in ICS. The Prime gets its IP address fine but there is no data connection. If I open the web browser on the Prime it states there is no connection. So either I am doing something wrong or its still locked out by Sprint in ICS. Help or clarification is appreciated either way.
I have also tried the "1-Click WiFi Tether No Root" app from the market and it does not work either. The problem statement is if I tether with the native ICS or with this app or others in the market then I lose data connection on the NS4G and obviously dont get it on the tethered device (Asus PRIME in this case).
After a considerable amount of reading I decided to just root the phone and install ClockworkMod and vhgomez36 ICS 4.0.4 ROM. Why? What I discovered is that even rooted there appears to not be an app or way to Tether when using a stock Sprint ROM. They disable it and check your account settings at launch to see if you have "Wifi Hotspot" enabled. If you do not then they disable data on the phone.
Works great now on vhgomez ROM with stock ICS tether app.
Case closed.
So I rooted my LG Lucid 2 from this guide: http://androidforums.com/lucid-2-al...ition-5-7-13-full-technical-notes-inside.html
The one thing I noticed is that afterwards, tethering by any method (wifi tether, usb tether, bluetooth tether) is now impossible. After doing some research i think that the rooting method removed the system app "hotspotprovision.apk"
I know the root for this phone had to dissable some root checker tool that lg built into the phone, but do you think that removing the hotspot app is necessary? or can i get it back without having my phone tell verizon that i'm messing with my phone (the link tells all about the weird root checking tool LG tried to hide)?
Any help would be awesome! I just need some way to tether due to it being my main source of internet when i am at school.
all apps like pda net, foxfi, wifi tether, and all the other apps just start with errors, and when i try to start up the built in usb tether option i just get an error saying "Sorry! Unfortunately Provision has stopped"
Even with a factory reset and/or re flashing the firmware is still doesnt work.
Has ANYONE else with this phone tried to use any tether apps? If so have they worked or failed? I don't even know if this is happening to just me, or if everyone who owns this phone is without the tether ability
It would just help me a lot to know if somebody else has the same problem or even doesn't. I'm trying to decide if I need to return the phone or if i just need to wait for a software update of some sort..
Thanks guys for the help.

I recommend EasyTether. It works with non-rooted phones, and the LG LUCID that has been rooted. I particularly like the fact that I can use it with both Windows and Linux.
Ok thanks ill give it a shot! Ill let everyone know if it works in a sec
So for some reason no matter what i do, wireless tethering wont work unless i bought the tether service for verizon... i got the usb tether side of foxfi to work but so far wireless tethering is out of the question.
I cant believe no one has posted about this problem except me! Is it literally only me that has this problem? Ive been posting about this all over the internet since the phones release and so far no one has tried to use a tether app to confirm that this is not just a defect with my particular phone!
Im having the same problems
No functional WiFi tethering
But other people have had successes
I going to try usb wired tethering next
Ok cool, thanks for the response. I was able to get usb tethering to work on pda net, but that requires installing another client on my computer as well, and connecting isnt always seamless. I mostly want a wifi hotspot to power all my other wifi only devices once i go off to school at the end of august.
So has anyone figured out how to get the wireless tether working after root? Just curios.
Not that is know of... Head over to android central. They are working on a ROM there which cooooould lead to a tether option in the future
Mine wont work either.

I'm glad I read this thread, because i was about to root my Lucid 2, but I probably would've ran into this problem too. I think some people who have this phone with Verizon Wireless were given a different type of software for tethering. I'm guessing me and you have one of those ones where It only works solo. No mods allowed, but the app below has been said to work regardless. I guess it's worth a shot.
Verizon uses an authentic piece of software for their tethering protocol. I don't know why it seems so mysterious, but it doesn't seem to work exactly like most hotspot protocols. You might have to confess, and get them to help you out. If i were you, and If the original tethering app doesn't work, then try to install the stock firmware back, and use a different root method next time.
-update-
Try 'Tetherfy(WiFi Tether w/o Root) on play store. I don't think i'll be able to make an 'apk' file out of Verizon's 'Mobile Hotspot' app. I believe they have it locked into phone.
The guy's method in the post above might work too. I don't see why not.
hey there
I have noticed your post for a long time and tried various kinds of methods to use wireless tether but failed.
someone told me this device can be flashed to as980 firmware,so i tried and then my android native hotspot function works!
there is my way .
1.download as870 .kdz firmware from somewhere.here is downlaod link(add dots by yourself plz) pan baidu com/s/1ETkrO

2.enable "download mode"on your phone
3.use KDZ_FW_UPD to flash
system will be automaticly restart and you will found that your apps and settings are remained.
