New to the G2x - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey everyone,
I just picked up a G2x the other day and I'm really liking it. I'm coming from the Galaxy S 4g. I am really impressed with and encouraged by the progress and development. I'm having a great time playing around with the various rom. Anyway I just wanted to say hello and give a shout out to the devs for their amazing work

Welcome and enjoy the g2x. Had this phone since launch and never had any problems.

I'm noticing a lot more new comers to the g2x its nice lol, wondering why though... besides the fact that they are super cheap.

Well I'm making the switch because it was the cheapest off contract dual core phone and it was stock Android
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

I was thinking the same thing because of the price, regardless it is still good that more people are making the switch. And I like all the positive threads for now instead of the multiple bad threads

I've had my G2X since they first came out last April. I really like it. At first I got the random reboots probably once every two days, but the OTA update largely fixed that. Now I might get a random reboot or screen freeze once every couple of weeks if I haven't rebooted myself. Other than that the phone is perfect.
I also have an original Asus Transformer that uses the same Tegra 2 chip (but with 1 GB RAM instead of 512 MB). I just updated that to ICS and it runs as fast or faster than it did with Honeycomb. I'm sure in a few months people are going to be saying you need a quad core phone running at 1.5-2.0 GHz with 2 GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, but in reality you don't. It's not like my G1 which barely had enough power and space for Android 1.0 let alone any updates - any dual core phone out there will have enough hardware to run ICS, Jelly Bean, and whatever comes after that just as well as they ran FroYo or GB when they were original.

Welcome!
Enjoy the phone! We do have some great devs!

Nice to meet someone from the beginning, and also I completely agree with ur statement. As for the op, did u find out which rom is the most stable for you? Please try hellfire which is based off cm7, i believe 2.0 is the latest version right now.

I just picked up my GX2 today and so far I am very happy. I am switching from sprint to tmo. I sold my NS4G for $200 and bought a new GX2 for $200 all on craigslist. With my NS4G I was running Peter Alfono' 4.0.3 bugless beast rom. It was flawless. Tomorrow I will be bring my sim card and activatingmy phone. After that it's onto rooting and an ics rom. Who can suggest the best ics rom?

Lol, a free with contract dual core phone that can beat a Galaxy S2 if you have the right ROM/kernel combo....
More users you say? Absurd.

NO, please god no, if you are looking to find out the real performance of this phone use a GB Rom.
ICS Roms aren't finished for this phone yet, expect them to be finished soon though.

I am so new I called my phone a GX2, duuuuu.....anyways, gonna try Eaglesblood 2.3.7 tomorrow for my first rom. No since going with an ics rom if it's not as good as what I had with my ns4g. Reading about EB2.3.7 it sounds really good.

EB was the first rom I have ever flashed in my life, it is an amazing rom and donicq is an amazing developer. Hellfire is an amazing alternative to eagles blood with many add ons as well. Welcome to the g2x community and I hope your phone doesn't have any problems

Haha I brokered the exact same deal. Sold my NS4G (single core 1000mhz) for $200 and brought my G2x (dual core 1000mhz) for $200. = Win

EaglesBlood GB Rom was my 1st flash as well.
Yeah ICS was more developed ( by a few months )on the NS4G.

I've been using the EB 2.3.7 rom for a couple of days now and I really like it. I am going to try HellFire for a couple of days as well to see which one I like better. What I have seen so far they are both great. Even played around with EB ICS and I liked it a lot. Since I don't, necessarily, need video recording, and I can watch videos with software decoding ICS could potentially be daily use for me but we shall see. Either way I am having a lot of fun playing around!

Glad to see more new people here, especially with such a positive vibe. I've had this phone since a few weeks after it came out and have had a great experience with it. I joined xda a handful of months ago when I decided I wanted to root and ROM, and right around the time I joined there was a lot of negativity going around. There were a lot of people who joined xda after ICS came out with an attitude that LG, T-mobile or the devs owed them something. It was hard being a newcomer on the forum when so many newcomers were joining and being disrespectful to the devs and the old-timers and to the community in general.

I just got this phone as well.
I really like it (specially love the way the power key feels). I'm a bit disappointed that the latest "official" software update seems to be 2.3.3, not 2.3.7.
I'm also hating the APN bug since I'm on Simple Mobile and the phone keeps switching back and forth. Though there was an app recommendation on the forums that should hopefully fix the issue.
For $300 off-contract the LG G2X can't be beat.

[Q] Captivate, should I get one?

Greetings,
I've never had an Android phone. I'm still using a Behold and a Storm II for work.
I bought a Nook Color, and I've been running Honeycomb for a few weeks.
I'm ready to bail on T-Mobile and go to ATT while I can still get a good deal on a phone for being a new customer, and the refurb Captivate is free.
I'll try the OEM 2.2 release, then probably root.
If you knew then what you know now, would you still get a Captivate?
I would, imho still the most customizable phone out there. I was mad because 4 days after my 30 day the phone was free for black friday.
I would buy it . If u don't wana wait if u wait till first week of April Samsung galaxy s2 is coming with all the frequency bands on it. So its 3g compatible basically with all carriers.

The deal with the refurb phone is that you run a chance at getting one that has a shutdown problem. There are still some refurbs floating around in their stock that hasn't been repaired by Samsung (despite what AT&T claims) that resolves a random shutdown problem. I know this because I got a refurb that had this problem and I had to send it to Samsung to have it repaired (I got my Cappy last December).
Other than the problem I had with it initially the phone rocks and I am glad I got it at the price of a two year contract renewal and no more.
DONT GET A REFURB. you want the full warranty just in case.
The main problems with Captivates is the crappy (useless on stock) GPS, warranty is good for getting a replacement if your phone has issues. The other problem is the random shutdown problem. it happened to an earlier batch and doubtful you would get one with that issue.
I LOVE mine, best screen i have seen and a great phone with a custom ROM which is not too difficult to install.
I beg to differ. We got better display (samoled), more roms, more kernels, and more developers. What about unlocking? We got that. HTC don't. Ton of themes. HTC is heavy and the battery case is hard to open. We got 16gb on board and HTC got 8gb. Maybe I just like my captivate.

I used to have a Cappy, so I know what I'm talking about. Glad I ditched it.
Display - yeah, SAMOLED is better, although it's pretty good on the Inspire as well.
Roms - I've only tried CM7 on the Inspire, but it's been far nicer than any of the custom roms I've tried on the Captivate. The Cappy ones are great, but CM7 just has so many more features. I know you guys are getting CM7, eventually, but looks like it'll take a while.
Unlocking - yes it is possible to unlock the Inspire, in fact the initial rooting program does it for you.
Weight - it's a little heavier than my old Cappy but it doesn't bother me too much.
Battery door - it was only hard to open the first few times, now it's easy.
Memory - yes Cappy has more to begin with, but it is possible to change out the SD card in the Inspire to a bigger one. Cappy has 16gb internal, Inspire has an 8gb SD card bundled.
Oh yeah the Inspire's GPS actually works pretty well, and HTC actually seems to care about putting updates out for their phones. That was my biggest gripe with the Captivate, is just that Samsung didn't seem to give a **** about their customers after sale. Of course custom roms and such from here were very helpful.
No. Wait for the Galaxy S2

If you weren't so close to other phones (and better phones) being launched, I would say get a Captivate. At this point though, wait for the new phones. Plus you never know with AT &T now buying T-Mobile, the deals should be a plenty.

Captivate is an awesome phone minus the GPS issue which a lot of the roms do seem to "almost" fix. Awesome battery life, great screen and TONS of roms.

captivates a great phone inspire is a great phone, and the gs2 will be a great phone.
take your pick.
My Inspire destroys my Captivate. Even unlocking the phone is faster. The Inspire has Sense ROM's, MIUI and Cyanogenmod support, a true AOSP build in the works, and RoyalLiquid is being ported from the MyTouch 4G. The Captivate has just now gotten Cyanogenmod support. Pretty much everything else in the Captivate Dev section is the same ROM with a different theme (no offence to the Capybara devs).
The Captivate has one thing over the Inspire: a SAMOLED screen.
All of this being said, it's all fact beside the first sentence. YMMV. They're both awesome phones but better phones are around the corner.

samsung infuse info

ok heres the deal im thinking of buying this phone by tonight and i was wondering what you guys recommend me if to buy it or does this phone has as much problems as the Samsung galaxy s vibrant i know its not in the galaxy s family but it is still Samsung. so what do you guys think should i get it? sorry if it was asked before ill be honest i didn't do my research to see if this was already asked or mentioned in this forum like i said i wanna make the decision by tonight. thank you in advance.
i've had the phone for about a month now and i couldn't be happier. Like most people have said, its ultimately an upgraded captivate with an amazing screen. I haven't had any bugs with it. It seems that the GB roms send to suck up the battery a lot faster though which prompted me to downgrade back to a froyo ROM (infused 1.6).
First droid, wife has iphone 4. This is way better! Worse pixels and you can see it on text and other things. I love it and don't think id go back. Iphone 5 is coming soon, so the droid that has to.compete with that will be epic, dual processors and all that. As of today tho i love mine

I'm loving my Infuse even though there's only like three ROMs. xD
I'll be putting out a custom ROM and Kernel soon though!
I wasn't sure about the infuse at first, but after all the gb roms and now the Cam fix with kernel and modems I love it.

What should be my next phone?

Ok, well...I have actually had a pretty darn good expierience with my g2x...I just don't keep phones for very long. I have an upgrade available on t-mobile and am wanting to hear from you guys what you think I should get.
My wife just got the Sensation 4g, and she loves it....I don't think I like it that much....especially with a stock rom on it.
Was thinking about the SG II, but not too sure what is coming out in the near future. I know SG II will be getting ICS (as will the sensation)...
Let me know what you think.
Galaxy nexus is the obvious answer for a phone that will be coming out, soonish. Just look it up and watch youtube videos that'll pretty much some it up for you.

Just wait till the next big waves of phones come. Probably around Feb or so. Wait for the next generation S4 processors and Exynos.
None of the current phones which don't have ICS installed when you buy one. I also think you should wait until the next "crop" of phones which will have ICS and quad-core processors, more memory, better screens, etc. Also, check out the Android update history of the company, LG is horrible.
I agree with core. Wait till phones have ICS installed and new quad core processors. ICS is the software that will really make dual or quad cores shine due to its capability of multi-threading. Till then just make due. As far as i have seen android usually has a habit of making decent software upgrades every other official release its seems. Like we had donut then éclair but wasn't till froyo came out android was actually looking good. IMHO

I'd say wait for next Gen of phones also. You ask me there's nothing very impressive about this huge galaxy nexus they try to pass off as a phone. If it didn't come out with ics and the nexus name no one would even care. And since a multitude of phones will be upgraded to ics its really not the big deal its hyped up to be.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Ditto on the bandwagon to wait for the next generation. After all the releases the g2x can hold its own. Don't really need a new phone until the following :
1. ICS ROM from CM9 team and manufacturer
2. Easy to root/ develop on
3. Multicore processing
I am very patient. Hell, I bought this g2x on impulse without knowing about xda forum. Never again I paid retail for my phone. Just works out waiting how xda develops a new phone. Better that way. I am very disappointed with amaze 4g and sgs2 from xda forum perspective.
I am a big fan of cm7 and prefer a phone that can run that over stock ROM.
Still, better of waiting. By then prices plunge and you can get great phone at a bargain.

Considering op is talking about an upgrade option being available with tmobile, I'm sure he is only looking at subsidized plans. The nexus is not subbed so it will cost him 700 up front. So if your talking about saving subsidized phone you might see much of an upgrade when switching to any of the high end phones being offered right now. You will get extra ram a better screen and better battery but performance will be about on par with your g2x. I would say wait. I don't believe there will be any quad core phones in the next six months but the longer you wait the better the chance your phone might get an official update to jellybean and its possible a quad might appear. It might be buggy cause it's first gen but it's something I guess

Supposedly quad core could be out as early as April, might be worth the wait.
I hope there's another G2X'ish phone that is powerful as hell but loses value quick so I can pick it up late in the year for cheap. Watched this G2X of mine lose half its value in 8 months and don't want that to happen again

Yeah but where is it going to be released to is the question. Samsung phones are usually released 6 months in advanced internationally. Most updated roms are released internationally before it hits these shores. I doubt we will get the first quad core.

OP, there is nothing out on T-mobile that's worth using an upgrade on right now. Your best bet is to just wait for the either the Galaxy Nexus to launch on TMobile or wait for the quad core phones (I would not recommend buying a tegra 3 powered phone either). But no need to waste an upgrade right now.

I agree with mysterioustko, don't waste lots of money losing money on your G2X and buying something now because you're disatisfied with what you have. Wait until ICS is available for the G2X and evaluate the phone's desirability again. If you're still disatisfied, wait until the new crop of phones are selling with ICS and research the manufacturer's update history and never buy an NVIDIA (Tegra) chipped phone, get one which has chips that have totally open sourced technical information for drivers, etc., such as the Texas Instrument chips in the new Google Nexus phone. When the new crop of phones are first sold, wait a few months until the hype abates and real user and developer experiences/evaluations are available and read them thoroughly. As well, research what independent developers are supporting with alternative kernels and ROMs.
I upgraded to the gs2 from the g2x and couldn't be happier.
Very fast and snappy.... faster stock than my cm7 overclocked g2x was...it has a 1.5 processor stock...g2x was max overclocked at 1.5
Huge screen that is very easy to type on
It has already seen an update just a month after being out...we just got an update to 2.3.6 with free wifi calling that doesn't count against your minutes
Its the first phone to be activated to use dual core gps !!!! Best gps on ANY phone out. uses GPS *AND* GLONASS satellites to equal 51 satellites instead of 27

once again the tmobile gs2 is the FIRST AND ONLY phone right now to have this feature activated. Its only possible for snapdragon s3 processor phones

Newer phones almost always have updated/upgraded features/capabilities but beware of phone fever which is what the first buyers of the G2X suffered from because that was the first dual-core phone on the market and we all know what happened to it.

So fed up with the G2X

I could not be more fed up with the T-Mo G2x. I just listed it on Craigslist. I have had more problems with this phone that any other Android phone I've owned. I can not find a ROM that makes this phone run smoothly. I do not blame the devs in any way. They are just working with the crap that LG provided them. Anywho...to my question. I was wondering from those of you on T-Mobile what you thought the best replacement would be. I'm not eligible for an upgrade for another year so that is out of the question. I need a contract free phone and it needs to run on T-Mo's 3G or HSPA+ network. Thanks for your advice guys. I appreciate it. BTW...my budget is $350. My initial thoughts were either going back to a Nexus S, or going with an HTC Sensation.

Well... you're missing out.
With pretty much any optimized CM ROM (Eaglesblood, Hellfire Phoenix) and a good kernel, well THE good kernel (trinity) your phone will fly. Could easily compete with the T-Mo Galaxy S2.
But, yeah, the next best thing to a G2x is a Galaxy S2, I think HTC phones are ugly, but if you like them I think T-mo has a few good ones.

Why do people think a single core phone can compete with a dual core phone? It just doesn't make sense to me.
Even with crap software a dual core phone beats a single core phone in sheer processing power, and then with custom ROMs it beats them in everything. Not to mention the G2x has Tegra 2.
I'm happy with my G2x's hardware, and the dev's here are amazing.
Can't blame you for being fed up with it. While I've never really had problems with it I know plenty have.
To me, you shouldn't have to constantly try to find a perfect combo of ROM and kernel to make a phone good. It should already be 100% working out of the box, and the G2x was far away from that.
Hopefully you can get something better! If you can try to trade it for a Nexus S. Nexus S has no problems and actually has a higher re-sale value than the G2x.
Anyways, good luck.
Try the ICS kang roms? I hate this phone too, although custom roms do seem to fix a lot of the issues I had with the g2x.
If you're looking for a different phone I would recommend the amaze/galaxy s2 or wait a few months for some of the new phones that were announced at MWC.

If you want to see the max potential of this phone I would suggest not using the ICS ROMs yet as they are not finished; try Hellfire Phoenix or Eagles blood, your phone will fly.
Sent from the second fastest G2x in the universe... for now *you're doing it wrong*
You can definately get the sensation on craigs list for under $350 if you are comfortable dealing on there, you may even get lucky and find an amaze for that price.

Are we getting it for sure on T mobile USA. Plus should I really trust their homemade apple pie(in-house developed quad core processor)???
I have used several international Huawei before and they all have been sub-par. they really are a budget phone maker and I don't want to be their Guinea pig for the high end market.
I would love to get my hands on A nokia pureview 808 if we can get CM on it and it doesn't take away from the camera.

I don't feel that I am missing out in any way shape or form. After having a Nexus S in the past and having used my mom's nexus s since the 4.0.3 update, I can tell you that it blows my G2X out of the water. Single core or not, I will take a bugless interface over what I have been dealing with on the G2X. I am unable to keep it on for more than an hour at a time, at which point I get the sleep of death. This is my 3rd G2X and they have all had the same issues. I have tried every custom rom and every kernel and every combination in between. I am experienced with flashing roms and kernels and can not for the life of me make this phone worth anything. I'm done with it. So yeah...I am considering going back to the Nexus S.
One more thing. Thank you so much to all of the devs for the G2X. Thanks for all of the work that all of you have put in trying to make this phone everything it should be. You are very much appreciated.

You are lucky my friend. I haven't owned one yet that doesn't suffer from the sleep of death. It truly makes me sad as the G2X really is one hell of an handset. I just can't take the frustration associated with it. I just need a phone that works for the next 11 months. Then I can get the first round of 6 core processor phones early next year....I can be hopeful right????

You must've just gotten bad hardware, but I wouldn't try again to see if you got good hardware on this phone, I guess I was lucky as my G2x is smooth as butter and bugless.
Also if you still have your G2x, try raising the minimum frequency using SetCPU as many said that fixed their problem, but if you don't then don't worry about it.
Have fun with your Nexus S, because even though it's hardware can't compare, you'll still have complete google support and be among the first to get 4.1.x.

I actually switched from a Nexus S to the G2X. I never had an issue with it in any way. I just couldn't resist some dual core goodness with the G2X came out. I regret ever switching at this point. Someone just offered me $240 for the G2X which goes pretty much for what they are selling on Ebay and on Amazon. I think I'm gonna do it. Anyone have any suggestions of other places to sell it for more?

That's why I always keep my previous phone for a couple months after upgrading.
Take that deal, because of the G2x's bad rep most people sell them for around 50-100$, but you've got a sucker on your hands, so sell it quickly before he smartens up.
Although, I've seen some people say their G2x was bad and then when someone else bought it the other person was able to have a stable clock speed of 1.66 with undervolting which is extremely intense, so you may be the sucker .
But yeah, if you don't like it, sell it to that guy.
EDIT: also the SODs can be caused by your battery, you may have gotten a faulty battery from LG (like many others.)

OH! Yeah, right now a single core ICS phone would blow a dual core GB phone out of the water, seeing as ICS has the HW acceleration :/.
ICS builds are a lot less than perfect right now for this phone.

I had the same problems with mine up until about a week ago. I read an article that stated it wasn't the phones problem but a battery problem due to LG batteries having a bad batch and overall suck. I ordered a anker battery off of eBay and guess what? I have not had one single issue again for a week straight. Same rom and kernel as before. So to anyone having issues and are using the stock battery replace it with a non OEM brand.

The Samsung Infuse is no longer for sale.

I brought up the thread for ICS which was a happy thing, but this is a sad topic. According to the att website, it is no longer available. It was on sale for a year, and it was one of ATT's biggest selling phone for a long time. It is now retired What are your thoughts on this? Btw heres the link to prove: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/cellphones.html
the infuse was out of production within about 3 months of release. any infuses sold after that were either overstock or refurb. this is no new news. no surprise. it's a nice phone with nice cameras and a big readable screen but it was the last single core flagship phone and was released after dualcores were common. it's out of date and less powerful than many second rate phones on the market today in processing power.
i dont think a better phone is necessary, but the hardware profile combined with the samsung firmware keeps rom ports from ever being viable without sacrifices. as much as i have loved the phone it's about to be time for something new.
I completely agree with Dani, when i purchased my infuse i knew it was second string with the galaxy s 2 already out. I was on a tight budget and it was the best option and im not surprised it is no longer for sale especially with the s3 coming very soon!
This is saddening but understandable news. I bought my Infuse back in November 2011, non-contract for $485 after taxes at my local AT&T store, the sales rep actually brought me out a Galaxy S II at first and asked me if I wanted that instead.
I paused for a moment and told him I did my research on both phones and told him I preferred the Infuse's specs. Was satisfied with the RAM, the single core, and impressed that it had better battery life; not to mention it was a good $100 cheaper. I was coming from the Motorola Backflip and just couldn't take the constant slow downs and limited internal storage any longer, and a bigger screen was what I needed.
Fast forward a few months, and here we are coming up on the stateside release of the Galaxy S III and ya know what, I'm still Infuse strong. Samsung did a better job on this phone than they realized. I'm not likely to get an S III because I'm still satisfied with this phone, even with my upgrade available in August. Don't get me wrong, the S III is an impressive phone in its own right, but now that we have ICS, I see no reason to jump ship, mine is sailing smoothly

+1 on the not jumping ship part.
I dumped an Atrix for the Infuse and couldn't be happier. Faster boot, bigger screen and it performs better, running non rooted one-click 2.3.6.
I would be satisfied with one more "patch" update to fix the few bugs left in GB ... although I made my infuse a 100 times better last week by switching to straightalk lol

Sticking with Infuse but waiting on GOOG
With GOOG's announcement of a line of GNex devices this year I'm waiting on their offerings before giving up my Infuse to the kids.
The GSIII is impressive and so is the OneX. But the Infuse is a good phone for the money
I'd recommend the Ebay markets to get good deals if you're asked for a good non-contract smartphone.
Ohh on an off topic note. I tried to copy a home vid to my Mom-InLaw's new iP 4s and I couldn't. Even with iTunes and imported the video, I couldn't just copy it to the phone.
Android rocks, pure and simple.
Yeah... I am actually thinking about moving on to the S3. I love ICS. I have 2 infuses actually in the house. One is my gf's and one is mine. She doesn't need bluetooth, so I loaded hers up with Legend 2 with Apex and its AWESOME...
Now I look at mine on GB, I am like.... man.... I really like ICS in terms of speed and features. Its got some nice stuff....
So yeah, Infuse ICS w/o bluetooth really makes me sad...... So probably SGS3 coming my way.

Try using Holo Launcher, it is a near perfect copy of the stock ICS launcher. Makes me wonder why I need ICS when GB already runs smooth as butter.

Where's the race?
I use Go, and their last update introduced the ics animations for the app drawer. If all you are looking for is the feel and look, there are plenty of options via gingerbread. None really being the "winner" as with most things...its about personal preference.

Stop... Please stop.
There's absolutely NO REASON to buy an Infuse when the SGS2 i777 has been going on sale for $9.99 new directly AT&T.
If you qualify for a subsidized upgrade and don't mind being stuck in another two year contract do yourself a favor and get a SGS3, SGS2, or SGS2 Skyrocket.
This phone is dead to Samsung. There will be no further updates. While the devs here are doing great work, the most stable ROMs are derived from official releases or leaks from Samsung.
My Infuse was a great phone but it's been relegated to being a backup phone/MP3 player.

I wasn't advocating that anyone purchase this phone. This thread was titled "Infuse No Longer Available".....I was stating that yes they are still available.
I got my Infuse earlier this year, just wanting to get rid of my iPhone. Android is better on any and every occasion. Now I just wish that I had got the GS2 or saved up for the note...
