[Q] Captivate, should I get one? - Captivate General

Greetings,
I've never had an Android phone. I'm still using a Behold and a Storm II for work.
I bought a Nook Color, and I've been running Honeycomb for a few weeks.
I'm ready to bail on T-Mobile and go to ATT while I can still get a good deal on a phone for being a new customer, and the refurb Captivate is free.
I'll try the OEM 2.2 release, then probably root.
If you knew then what you know now, would you still get a Captivate?

I would, imho still the most customizable phone out there. I was mad because 4 days after my 30 day the phone was free for black friday.

I would buy it . If u don't wana wait if u wait till first week of April Samsung galaxy s2 is coming with all the frequency bands on it. So its 3g compatible basically with all carriers.

The deal with the refurb phone is that you run a chance at getting one that has a shutdown problem. There are still some refurbs floating around in their stock that hasn't been repaired by Samsung (despite what AT&T claims) that resolves a random shutdown problem. I know this because I got a refurb that had this problem and I had to send it to Samsung to have it repaired (I got my Cappy last December).
Other than the problem I had with it initially the phone rocks and I am glad I got it at the price of a two year contract renewal and no more.

DONT GET A REFURB. you want the full warranty just in case.
The main problems with Captivates is the crappy (useless on stock) GPS, warranty is good for getting a replacement if your phone has issues. The other problem is the random shutdown problem. it happened to an earlier batch and doubtful you would get one with that issue.
I LOVE mine, best screen i have seen and a great phone with a custom ROM which is not too difficult to install.

I beg to differ. We got better display (samoled), more roms, more kernels, and more developers. What about unlocking? We got that. HTC don't. Ton of themes. HTC is heavy and the battery case is hard to open. We got 16gb on board and HTC got 8gb. Maybe I just like my captivate.

I used to have a Cappy, so I know what I'm talking about. Glad I ditched it.
Display - yeah, SAMOLED is better, although it's pretty good on the Inspire as well.
Roms - I've only tried CM7 on the Inspire, but it's been far nicer than any of the custom roms I've tried on the Captivate. The Cappy ones are great, but CM7 just has so many more features. I know you guys are getting CM7, eventually, but looks like it'll take a while.
Unlocking - yes it is possible to unlock the Inspire, in fact the initial rooting program does it for you.
Weight - it's a little heavier than my old Cappy but it doesn't bother me too much.
Battery door - it was only hard to open the first few times, now it's easy.
Memory - yes Cappy has more to begin with, but it is possible to change out the SD card in the Inspire to a bigger one. Cappy has 16gb internal, Inspire has an 8gb SD card bundled.
Oh yeah the Inspire's GPS actually works pretty well, and HTC actually seems to care about putting updates out for their phones. That was my biggest gripe with the Captivate, is just that Samsung didn't seem to give a **** about their customers after sale. Of course custom roms and such from here were very helpful.

No. Wait for the Galaxy S2

If you weren't so close to other phones (and better phones) being launched, I would say get a Captivate. At this point though, wait for the new phones. Plus you never know with AT &T now buying T-Mobile, the deals should be a plenty.

First week of April? You sure?

Captivate is an awesome phone minus the GPS issue which a lot of the roms do seem to "almost" fix. Awesome battery life, great screen and TONS of roms.
If you can't wait, get it... But if I were you, I'd wait for the S2.

I say yes!!!

captivates a great phone inspire is a great phone, and the gs2 will be a great phone.
take your pick.

My Inspire destroys my Captivate. Even unlocking the phone is faster. The Inspire has Sense ROM's, MIUI and Cyanogenmod support, a true AOSP build in the works, and RoyalLiquid is being ported from the MyTouch 4G. The Captivate has just now gotten Cyanogenmod support. Pretty much everything else in the Captivate Dev section is the same ROM with a different theme (no offence to the Capybara devs).
The Captivate has one thing over the Inspire: a SAMOLED screen.
All of this being said, it's all fact beside the first sentence. YMMV. They're both awesome phones but better phones are around the corner.

I gat a refurb 5 days later sent it back when I knew they will send

Moving On to HTC Inspire

Hey guys. I'm actually relatively new on the forums, though I've had my Captivate since December last year. I have been using ROMs from these forums since the third day I had my phone, I just never registered.
Anyway, I just feel I should make a post thanking everyone. Mostly MikeyMike01 and ChanceM, because the third ROM I ever flashed was Serendipity. And I've been using Serendipity since then. I have indeed flashed things in between, but the longest I've ever had a non-Serendipity ROM on my phone has been less than an hour. So it's safe to say that Serendipity is a physical part of my phone now... In fact, since I'm getting the HTC Inspire, my brother is getting my Captivate (his first Android phone), and the ROM that I pre-loaded for him is Serendipity 5.12. That's how much I trust/love this ROM.
Anyway, does anyone have any opinions on the HTC Inspire? I remember seeing one other person in these forums who switched to the same phone, saying that it seemed like a more sturdy phone.
I will thoroughly miss these Captivate forums though. Thanks are as follows:
MikeyMike01
ChanceM
existz (I use SuckerPunch-Voodoo)
Samsung (LOL I use the KP1 modem, dunno who to thank for this one)
Anyone else who has some sort of mod on my phone.
its way faster and way more enjoyable, I wouldnt go back for nothing u will definately like it.
I couldn't justify spending $500 on a software upgrade.
The SGS2 seems interesting though. Have to find a place to import it fit a reasonable price... The international version is completely AT&T compatible.

After weighing all the pros and cons of the Galaxy S series and the upcoming 2 (talking about the internation/original here), the Galaxy S 2 will most likely be my next device. Decent build, decent software, hardware is top notch, and that screen is something I can't drop now that I've stared at it for so long. Knowing that the international Galaxy S 2 works with AT&T's HSPA+ bands without modifications is also a deciding factor.
please help me out. I'm with rogers canada they are sending me iphone 4. There is no way ill use or open it cause of previous experience. So I'm gonna sell it for 500. Now if you had to buy any of this phone which you would get? Atrix, sgs2, dhd, or nexus s. DHD already available here and nexus s and atrix coming this month. Sgs2 heard somewhere at&t version will be available. So which you would get?

Agreed for the most part. AT&T held back the Froyo ROM without a doubt for stupid reasons, but we aren't sure if the i9000 is actually getting Gingerbread. Yeah, it was leaked, but so was Froyo way back when. I understand that Froyo wasn't released for our phone mostly because of AT&T, but you can't be so sure; it's still just a "leak".

Not true at all. Serendipity is the closest I've found to perfect, but it's still a ROM. From experience and from hearing other people speak about the Inspire, you don't really even need to put a ROM on the HTC Inspire 4G for it to be perfect. I'm definitely going to flash something (maybe something that'll remove Sense UI, I'm not sure if I'll like it), but most of the features in the ROMs are already found on the phone as stock.

I would not get the DHD. I have a friend who has it, and it's just overhyped. It's not as good as everyone makes it seem.
The Nexus S is pretty much like this phone in which you'll have the same amount of development. The hardware may be different in technical respects, but the same in user experience.
The SGS 2 isn't released yet, but when it is, it's going to be a great phone. If it was already released, I'd consider buying it, but I'm not going to wait for it to come out.
The Atrix is somewhat overkill, but if you're entering college or have a need for a netbook/small laptop with basic features (e-mail, Facebook, etc.), then the Atrix is for you. It's just expensive, even with a contract.
Also, please post questions in the Q&A forum; that's why it's there.
Try Cognition 4.1 on your captivate. You won't be disappointed.
The Inspire kicks ass.

Between CM7 and MIUI on the Inspire it blows anything and everything out of the water in the Captivate/i9000 forums. After seeing how Samsung utterly destroys their phones with Touchwiz, I'll never buy a Samsung phone again.
Go with the Inspire and you will not be disappointed.
So DHD is not that good but inspire 4G is recommended? it's a bit confusing. Isn't the inspire 4G just a DHD with another name? Is there something I am missing?
The inspire is a downgrade hardware wise. Should of held out for something more amazing that's coming out this year. If it doesn't have a dual core I'm not interested.

They are basically the same phone. So that suggestion doesn't make much sense...
Inspire is a downgrade in hardware but upgrade in software. Add to that the rooting is quite a pain compared to the captivate...

How so? It has a lower pixel density and a Super LCD, which are both a downgrade, but I don't watch videos on my phone. Otherwise, how is it a downgrade? It has 700 somewhat MB of RAM, gets amazing Quad and Linpack scores compared to the Captivate (I don't base opinions on benchmarks, though), and Sense UI, though I might not use Sense...
the insipire isnt much of an upgrade. did u already get it? i personally would still take my captivate over it
I honestly can't see any of the current phones destroy the captivate in functionality and flexibility except for the nexus S. Pure google + decent specs.
The inspire blows cap away in speed, everyone in inspire forums will tell u that and almost all of them are previous captivate owners and switched to it, even blows the atrix away, call it a downgrade or whatever put whatever spin u like on it and its still the top phone to beat. and it works out of the box the radio even works great, i get no random shut downs my battery consumption is better then cappy, I dont get lag at all, it will load any program faster and run it better then the cappy did, watch a video on youtube about it, http://www.smartphoneenvy.com/featured/face-off-htc-inspire-4g-vs-samsung-captivate/ and yes no doubt there will be more better phones out this year same as 6 months from then there will be even more, with my 6 month early upgrade it cost me 300 to get it which I certainly can live with, in 6 months i will get another of the better phones out of the time.
I gave my Cap to my aunt. I have Serendipity 5.12 on it and MIUI on my Inspire. I have around 75 apps on the Inspire and it booted quicker, unlocked quicker, and the notification bar pulled down with no lag at all.
I was running CM7 on it and it was even faster than that.
The screen difference isn't that big of a deal, either, and I've stared at the SAMOLED screen since last August.

[Q] Should I get the Infuse, or wait?

Hey, I know that there at already lots of threads that have been created with various people asking whether the infuse is worth getting. But in my situation my decision is a one-time deal then I'm locked in for 18 months again (until im eligible for another upgrade).
So I want to ask whether I should get the Infuse when my upgrade comes in June or should I wait for when the GS2 hopefully hits AT&T in Q3? The GS2 is obviously better than any phone out there currently however I am currently stuck with a Nokia F160 (FML) so I'm anxious to get my hands on a new phone.
What do you guys think I should do?
The question is can u wait? Honestly this phone can be better once the roms drop... the captivate was a great phone that became a much better phone once it had custom roms. If u can get infuse now and some how save say 700 in 3 mths it would be a wise choice. Remember once roms drop the phone will be much better and if u was able to deal with that Nokia for as long as u did I think u can deal with the Infuse for longer.
Just my 2ยข

You will be thrilled with the quality of the screen. It's really mind blowing how great this thing looks. I am having some weird restart issues, but only when I have my SD card installed, so I'm guessing there is some weirdness that they should be able to fix fairly easily. It runs very, very fast and the battery is great. If nothing else, sell your Infuse in 3-4 months for ~400 here, and pay the extra 150-200 to buy the branded SGS2 from att.

I agree. The Infuse has all that I want in a phone, minus some restarting/freezing hiccups that I am certain will be cured with the many roms that are forthcoming.
I may buy the SGS2 in a few months, but actually, at that point in time, I might get an unlocked Hercules - that phone has the bigger screen of the Infuse with the hardware of the SGS2 if not slightly better. Other phones will be coming out in that time too, like the HTC Holiday which seems pretty bad ass. So my two cents is to get the Infuse now, and re-evaluate/sell in a few months when similar dual core versions are made available.
Hope that helps.

SGS2 dualcore battery drain way faster, I read forums sgs2 is a joke on mobile phone. Having a dual core phone make it IMMOBILE phone, they even say yes it is darn fast especially when browsing that's the only plus they see now compare to the infuse, but I was rofl when they mention fast but useless having to look for an outlet every time is a pain in a behind on a mobile phone, that's why I decided to bought the infuse, one even mention buying a sgs2 is similar to buying a lambo that can run 200mph but can only do 65-90mph on the freeway, and sucks more gas and way more expensive than a civic whicj can also do 90mph with less gas, I saw their point, do you?

[Q] How long will the Infuse 4G hold up?

How long do you guys think the Infuse 4G will last in the Market of ever improving phones? Will it last the next few years, say until an upgrade is eligible? Or will it simply fall apart compared to upcoming phones in the next few years? Personally, I love my Infuse, and I think it'll last at least a year to three in terms of specs and software. Please, discuss.
Ok, this is one thing you need to learn when it comes to new phones / laptops/ technology in general. In a year, IT WILL BE OUTDATED. I got the Samsung Captivate and could not imagine a better phone ---besides it's constant GPS issues and until the charging port broke on it...but that was partly my fault. I got this phone and it is great as well--even better than the Captivate. At the time, I did not think that was possible.
The thing you want to do is buy a quality product for the time. The Infuse is one of those things. If you take good care of it, it will last you. I fell off of my bike a few weeks back going downhill. I was pretty banged up. My Infuse, even though it was in a case, got pretty banged up--- cosmetically around those silver edges. It is fully functioning otherwise. It is a solid product. It will last you a long time if you don't abuse it.
For example -- -I still have the Samsung Blackjack 2 as my backup phone and I use it when my "newer and better" phones give me problems. I've had it for forever. It is still a good phone despite being years old. You have a decent phone now--- we all do, as far as the Infuse is concerned. I haven't heard too many complaints, but only time can tell if that will change. Treat it well and it will remain good to you.
The sg2 looks identical to the infuse(slightly smaller on at&t) , except with a better resolution and much better cpu, so I think the infuse will be obsolete when the sg2 hits the states. Nevertheless, I love my infuse and I think it's one of the best phones out right now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I'm just asking if you guys think it'll last the above-average Android user the next few years. I know it's already outdated. It was probably outdated before it even came out.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
depends on the user. there isnt much the phone can't do but it depends on samsung releasing updates and on the community to put out quality mods. to be honest with a good rom a droid could still be a viable phone. my friend has a nexus1 and loves it. i actually kinda envy it, i love the screen and media capabilities on samsung phones but as a phone the nexus is perfect and there is no reason it should need to be anything more.
i have a phone lust though. i will likely get the sgsiii or whatever comes after the sgsii long before my contract is up.
The Infuse right now is still the absolute best phone on AT&T.
And will stay that way till the SGS 2 comes out....

Sgs2 and infuse have the same resolution. 480x800 wvga.
I was looking at the specs of Galaxy II and the one thing I won't switch my infuse for is battery. It has 1600mA while Infuse has 1750mA. So when it comes to dual CPU, it should drain battery down pretty bad. I mean why will you ever even use that power on the phone unless you compute rocket science data using it. 4G also has a big mouth for drinking the juice out of your phone.
I'm not trying to say it is horible, it just would be a major concern if I'm a heavy data user.

The phone is already outdated when you bought it, but that is the rule with all tech lol. Will it last 5 years. If you take care of it sure but will it still be getting upgrades. Most likely not sense we are seeing higher and higher system requirements to run the newer updates.
It is confirmed the nexus S will get the ics update, hardware wise there's no reason the infused couldn't handle the update also. It's up to att and Sammy.

I am not saying it couldnt handle it, just saying that after the first OS update I would not look for any others. IF it gets 1 more after that then it will be lucky. As for the Nexus S, I had great hopes for it but then I found the Nexus S was by samsung and thought ok ill wait for the next and not the new prime may be a samsung as well so looks like ill wait till the next nexus is an HTC. But if it is a samsung or HTC as long as the phone is bought through ATT dont expect to get the same number of updates as the Euro versions of the same phone. They always will get more updates then its US counter parts. As always been the case and always will be.
This is why the nexus line is a safe bet typically, as it is 'googles' phone, the updates are fast and frequent. The S is a Sammy, but no need to wait on them making the updates play nice with tw .

Thinking of switching over from Evo to Infuse

The wife signed up with AT&T and got herself a nice little WP7 phone today. I was thinking about adding a line and buying the Samsung Infuse for $100 from them and rolling with it.
Thing is... I've had my HTC Evo for over a year and I run MIUI. I have for a long time now. I want the faster phone, bigger screen... cheaper bill than my Sprint!
Ideas? Thoughts? Anyone done this switch? Evo to Infuse?
It looks like a bad ass phone.. I do love my Evo though... The Evo is pretty bad ass in itself IMO.

I rarely switch. I usually just add...lol
However, the Evo is a nice phone and is similar to the Inspire, which I have. But the Infuse is a much nicer phone with the SAMOLED+, larger screen, better audio chip and stronger CPU. The only thing it needs right now is Gingerbread. It's still on FroYo. But rumor have the GB update coming out by the end of this month.
The Infuse is much lighter and the battery life is much better than my Inspire. It's also elegantly styled. It has 16GB internal storage. I love mine and am glad to have it.
It's still on Froyo? Wow. I didn't think any device like this was still using Froyo.
That just stopped me dead in my tracks.
im on 2.3.5 myself ... CM7 FTW

It's Samsung, expect this.
Anyways, we've got GB ROM's already, and 3 leaks, so it's bound to be released any day now (also, the GB leak is a build from like a week ago, so it's VERY recent).
Don't worry about the "It doesn't have GB" things, we do have it, just not released by AT&T.

You gotta rememver its still a relitively new phone. Official GB is on its way and should be here soon. Honestly the infuse is what i picked to hold me over til the nexus prime or the new samsung, i forget the name, note? W/e. Seriously this is an awesome phone and you wont be disappointed.

Hell, if they have CM for it then I think I can live with it. I'd miss MIUI though..
I will keep on pondering. Her phone should be here tomorrow and then I can sign up online with AT&T and add a line and all that over the computer. Then maybe I'll add myself a nice line with an Infuse.
I just posted by Evo on Craigslist. Doubt I'll get what I want for it.. http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/mob/2614360614.html

Well it's a relatively new phone, but Gingerbread was already old news when it came out, so what's really sad is that AT&T released it without Gingerbread to begin with. Then again, it's probably better that they didn't take the half-assed approach that Rogers did. :/
That said, depending on what features you depend on and how good AT&T's HSPA+ network is in your area, you can run one of the Rogers-based GB ROMs without any significant problems. And of course, as has already been said, official AT&T GB shouldn't be very far off.
Honestly though, I'd wait if I were you. While the Infuse certainly is better in a few areas, the EVO's a perfectly good phone. And not to knock our devs at all--they do a great job--but CM7 isn't really ready for primetime over here. If you want to run MIUI on an Infuse, expect a fair amount of inconvenience compared to what you probably have come to expect on your EVO. If you want to switch to AT&T, the Galaxy S II will be out in a week and a half, or if you extend your timeline to a few months, you can see what LTE phones get released.
Its tough man...both great phones...i would stick with the evo...it has more roms and stuff no reason to jump to the infuse when in 6 months it will be way out dated...
Galaxy note perhaps? Unless its too big for you -
S7 Infuse 1.6 Ghz
if you are in a city with frys electronics you can get the infuse for $20, or add it online! maybe that makes it easier to switch
A few good phones coming out soon, I'd wait.

I switched from my Evo to the infuse. I miss my Evo a lot (mostly development) but the infuse is all around better.

Thanks
I think I'll wait a couple of months. Let's see what else AT&T comes out with soon. Since the wife will have AT&T for a long time I think I'll just hold off and strike at the perfect time.
Thanks everyone for the advice. XDA is truly a great place to be a member of.
We actually do have MIUI, although it's the 8.19 one it's great!
The only big problem is the SD card can't be accessed from MIUI, but we have 16GB internal storage which is great! If you happen to get one, just PM me and I'll send you a link.
Will do.

You sir, are AWESOME!
Thanks for the heads up, this is the best deal I've seen for the Infuse (even better than the $50 TargetMobile deal awhile ago).
Been waiting for the iPhone 5 to show its face but I just might go ahead and get the Infuse at this price.
Wonder if Fry's can waive the upgrade fee?...

I am coming over from Verizon. I an interested in the Infuse, Galaxy, or Skyrocket, what's good, what's easy to customize?

I would recommend NOT the Infuse. Just my 2 cents.

I'd really recommend getting the Galaxy SII (not Skyrocket).
Just. Plain. Old. Sexy. Classy. SII.
The Skyrocket has a larger screen (4.5"), but from what I hear, it seems to have a few more issues than the SII original. Regardless, I still hear it's a great phone, but I think as far as getting future updates and Samsung support, original Galaxy SII is the safest bet.
If you really want a huge phone, look at the Galaxy Note.
And... Stay away from the Infuse. It's considered really old and outdated now. Yes, it's still a perfectly usable phone and it performs everyday tasks wonderfully. But when you can get the SII now for $100 or less, I just don't see why you'd want to lock into 2 years with a phone that is already a year old.
Plus, if you're a gamer, you definitely want to go with SII and not the Infuse. The RAM difference makes some games not be "compatible" with the Infuse.
To be honest, stay away from Samsung phones. I have two, a captivate and a infuse. I'm over Samsung because of the way they shelve their phones after a couple of months and all the problems in their software. I bought an Atrix 2 and its the best phone i have ever had. At first i wasnt sure about it because its a moto phone. Now that i have had it awhile i recommend this phone to anyone. Best battery life, 4 gb of space for apps and i got an over the air update on the second day of me having the phone. Its on the list for a ics update too. I have not had one single problem with this phone. Just my opinion but i would not get a samsung.

I also wouldn't recommend the Infuse. I love mine, but it seems to be considered "dead" in AT&T's eyes.

^^^ 100% agreed, but as well I do love mine too. I'm just glad we still at least have a team of Dev's that are active on ROM Updates.

I guess I'm a Samsung fan boy. I have always had a Samsung, even before smart phones. I had a Captivate which I gave to my wife when I went with an Infuse. Really love the big screen and I would get a Note if I had the money.....Really doesn't matter if AT&t never pushes out any updates, because I am running CM7.
I recommend the Galaxy S II (i777). I like the Infuse and Skyrocket, but the i777 is perfect. I'd also recommend the Skyrocket over the Infuse, purely because of the RAM difference. The Infuse can't be my daily device, because I need more RAM. So, in my opinion . . .
Galaxy S II (i777) > Skyrocket > Infuse
Samsung may have its issues with software, but theres no denying that their products are well made. Almost everything in my house is made by Samsung. They never die.
That aside, what is your budget and requirements? If you have the money and like the size, get a Note. I've heard nothing but good things about it and developers here are already playing with it. There doesn't seem to be any love for the Skyrocket though. If you're strapped for cash, I'd definately look into the Infuse. The price fluctuates from $50 to free sometimes, so you might get a great deal on one. It's one of the best phones I've ever had. All of the software issues have already been resolved by the devs here. While it may be a little dated by 2012 standards, it handles almost everything I throw at it and you just can't brick it. That's something those ****ty HTCs and Motorolas can't claim.

Well put, saving me the efforts of typing in the same.
Thank you all. Based on all you have said, and my research I think I am going to go with the Sony xperia ion. Any hints as to when it's coming out? I have seen q2, I have seen the end of March.

Samsung is where its at and if you plan on rooting and flashing Roms sammies are 99% unbrickable. As long as you read.....and you WON'T find a more helpful community than the good folks on the skyrocket side!

Not bad
The infuse is a nice phone from what I have experienced. Doesn't look like it will get CM9 though so I would avoid it.
The screen is absolutely beautiful despite it's pitiful resolution. The colors are stunning and viewable from all angles making pictures better looking than what you took a picture of! Also sometimes I forget I am reading off of my phone when using google books and think it's my kindle.
RAM is pitiful (512?! Really Samsung??) but the phone operates smoothly despite.
Battery life is better than anything HTC has to offer.
I am personally looking for an Atrix 4g and it's laptop dock. Pretty sweet combo.
I got the skyrocket. Nice phone.
